Painted lady butterflies (Vanessa cardui) are probably the best pet butterflies, and some of the best pet insects for many people. They are easy to raise, and can be released as adults in many areas with no negative impact to the environment. This is probably the best beginner butterfly!

I saw a group of these on our balcony wall about ten years ago. Not a common sight for us, even with a buddleia growing a couple of feet away. Since then, whilst searching for gift ideas, I found the species available for hatch and release here. I reckon this batch might've been raised by a local family or the nearby school.

I've always wanted to do this. I want to raise butterflies which are native but not present in my area so if I start seeing them I'll know I caused it lol
