This video just gets me excited for when I get my leopard gecko! I'm going to start them off in a 10 gallon while I let my bioactive 40 gallon establish for a few weeks or so! I know 40 is a bit big for a baby but I'm going to fill it and make it comfortable with slate, driftwood, cork, and hides! The tricky but fun part has been gathering and researching all of the supplies; but I feel like it will be worth it!

Sounds like a good plan! It'll give you time to figure out what plants do well in an arid tank too. Sometimes when you first build a tank all the plants look great, and then they're like 'nope im out of here' lol

For the primary heat source I’d switch to a halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat, they’re more natural and beneficial than DHPs. The levels of infrared A and B they produce more closely mimic the sun (DHPs produce barely any IRA, the most beneficial wavelength). I also strongly recommend upgrading to a 40 gallon (36x18x18”) :)

if you can the best way to find really good insects other than ones you can purchase, try starting a compost pile that is loosely covered. I found that the soldier fly in its maggot form is an amazing food for all my reptiles that eat insects. These maggots can be as large as an inch and they are dark charcoal in color. they can be as fat as a wax worm. also, i found that I can find them everywhere in my back yard as long as the grown is slightly moist and is covered by leaves . they are easy to find in the compost. You do need to dig around in it. they are not like other fly maggots. I have noticed that they stay in the maggot form for a very long time. this may be due to the cool and colder weather. To me they are more like a caterpillar with no legs and a not so cute face. My lizards LOVE THEM! Nothing I have ever fed them has gotten them so excited. But for my Leopard Gecko he does love them but his all time favorite food is the June Bug larva those are more difficult to come by but well worth it . for those I just lift up heavy objects that are in my backyard and usually I will find those right on the surface of the dirt. Other ways to find them is digging in the ground that has moist dirt. a good way to insure that you will have those conditions is to cover the ground with something. a board .. some plastic... a flat rock ... a large pot... anything that helps the ground stay moist. they can be hard to find and take some work, but i have never seen my gecko more happy when i bring those to him. but back to the fly maggots... you can find them also if you just dig a bit just an inch or two in the dirt that doesn't get a lot of sunshine . They are easy to keep as well, I like to gather them up in the hundreds and keep them in a container that i have filled with the soil that I produced in my compost pile area. I rinse them off with warm water a few times before I feed them to my lizards to remove the dirt as well as it makes them very active. Out of all the insects that one can buy those maggots are my Vailed Chameleons favorite food ever! He gets so excited about them that he almost gets inside the bowl while eating them. All other foods he looks at for a LONG TIME then stretches out his tongue a long distance away. but for those he practically fly's across his habitat grabs the side of the bowl and chows down one after another until there is nothing left. I put some earth worms in there yesterday with them just to see if he would ever like to eat them . he ate everything but those worms. even tho the worms were active. in my iguanas habitat i put my giant meal worms that became beetles and a few roaches that came from a far off land, I cant remember what kind they are, but you can buy them at the pet store . Those roaches have been living in there for two years. one of them I crushed, not purposefully. but a week later I found him and he was as good as new. the meal worms beetles have made lots of babies.. all these guys are living off of what ever my iguana doesn't eat. and a few times I saw her eat some meal worms! So if I can not find food in my back yard I just go to her place and find what I need. also my L. Gecko habitat has a dirt floor . the bottom layer is clay mixed with regular dirt then soil /dirt... then some dry leaves and some small shells spread out here and there. I also put some greens in there from time to time and fill those shells with water. sometimes I allow bird seeds to grow up. Besides his water dish and his hot rock and his cave he also has a habitat that is self sustaining life.. this life is feeder crickets. I have noticed a year ago that what he didnt eat started reproducing! so, his habitat feeds him! at first I had some issues with his shedding. he sure had a very difficult time getting rid of his shed around his fingers and toes.. No matter how long I soaked his little feet I couldnt get it off. He lost fingers and toes... but , they all came back ! and after that happened he didnt have those problems anymore. he is such a sweet little fella... they all are I have crested gecko too. just two, male and female. the best thing I ever did for my geckos is making their home more like outside. Those sea shells i put in there are for the insects. they hold water in them so when they get thirsty I dont have to worry about them drowning in a water dish and oddly enough their habitats are always clean. it is like the soil and the insects keep everything nice and tidy. before i chose to use soil their habitats were always covered in poop. now when you look in it smells clean and looks clean. I guess the insects keep it that way and the soil and the growing lights and the other lamps all play a part. really the only thing I need to do is refresh the water. Even the left over greens and fruit that my iguana doesnt eat gets cleaned up by the insects and replenishes the soil I have found that using soil has been the best idea I have ever had when it comes to my lizards. its been a game changer for sure. I tried all the products from the stores and when using them they just didnt make since. nothing ever seemed right. there was always something I didnt like with each one. and the work that had to go into keeping everything clean was annoying. SOIL IS THE WAY TO GO ... TRY IT try making their homes more like outside.

Although I've narrowed down that the DHP is the best source of heating for leopard geckos, it seems extremely daunting as someone who's never owned a reptile. I've been thinking if using the habistat heat mat would be okay to use for the first few months of the geckos life while I continue learning from experience instead of from research. But my hesitation to use the DHP makes me wonder if I'm even ready for a leopard gecko. I do plan on getting a baby/juvenile, I've handled all sorts of small reptiles and every other aspect of owning this reptile with good husbandry seems very clear to me, except using the DHP alongside UVB (in which I will be using) :)) any advice would be appreciated

The breeder who gave her to me said that their 4 year old caught her foot in the lid when she was putting it on. At the time we didn't know if it was a he or she so we just started calling her Stumpy. Now that I am sure of her gender I'd like a little more feminine name for her other than Stumpy. The other one I got from a different breeder on the same day is like a sand color so we called her Sandy. She ended up being female as well. The male I just got a few weeks ago I named Iggy. So what suggestions can I get for my footless females name?

You don’t need a heat mat, just use a heat lamp (on during the day, off at night). A PAR30 or PAR38 halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat (ideal) is the best option. A tube UVB bulb would be beneficial. Keep your dog out of the room when the gecko is out. When the gecko is in the tank, your dog should be fine in the room, as long as he doesn’t bother the gecko.

When I got my leopard gecko, I originally wanted a day gecko. A giant day gecko specifically. My parents didn't let me get one for 2 reasons: 1. I accidentally made it seem that day geckos were impossible to care for 2. They feared that I might accidentally kill it. They later found out that day geckos weren't impossible to care for, and my mom's main issue for not getting one was because I forgot to mention that day geckos eat produce.

I've been having difficulty with my thermometer and thermometer gun :( I have a dimmer thermostat for my DHP but my thermometer probe and thermo gun read diff temps and I'm very worried and struggling to maintain my temps for my juvenile gecko :( please help with any suggestions, should I buy a new thermometer? Should I go off the thermometer gun? My probe always reads at about 82-83F but when I use my thermo gun (aiming it at the same spots where probe is) it reads a bit higher like 87-88F
@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 2 жыл бұрын
Trust the temp gun, they’re the most accurate for surface temps. Probes generally measure ambient temps. The basking spot should be 90-95. If you’re not getting the temps you need perhaps you need a higher wattage bulb, or to elevate the basking spot so it’s closer. I recommend switching to a halogen flood bulb, they’re actually more natural and beneficial than DHPs! The levels of infrared A and B they produce more closely mimic the sun (DHPs produce barely any IRA, the most beneficial wavelength).

Avoid chain petstores like PetSmart and petco. Check morph market, just research the breeder before buying. Avoid large scale breeders and look into smaller hobbyist breeders. You can also look for geckos being rehomed.

All lights must be off at night so as not to disrupt their day/night cycle. Leopard geckos generally don’t need heat at night, as long as it doesn’t get below 60F they’ll be fine. Plus the basking spot will likely stay warm for awhile after lights out, especially if it’s slate or something similar.

Hey I have a new gecko who came from a very bad living space, as in they left him in sand and only fed him once a month. What would you say as advice?
@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 2 жыл бұрын
Feed him a variety of live, dusted, gutloaded insects. Don’t feed too many fatty feeders, stick to mainly healthy feeders. If he’s underweight maybe feed him a bit more/more often until he’s at a healthy weight. Regarding the sand: make sure he isn’t impacted (although he isn’t necessarily). Eating and pooping are good signs that he isn’t. Quarantine on paper towel for the first six weeks to monitor his health. After, a suitable loose substrate such as a soil/playsand mix is ideal. It would also be a good idea to get him checked out at an exotic vet just in case.

When you get a baby leopard gecko and you start it off in a plastic container, is it okay if you move it to a 40 gallon? I mean, im going to feel it with lots of hides and things so it might seem a little smaller than 40 gallons. Thats what i have my adult leo in right now but will it be too big for a juvinile?
@nightinggale6470

Absolutely! As long as there’s plenty of clutter and plant coverage, and not too much open space, babies can thrive in a 40 gallon.

Her care sounds pretty good. As long as she’s healthy I wouldn’t worry. Just keep feeding her a healthy diet and make sure you don’t overfeed her. All geckos are different, some grow more slowly than others. I recommend offering more variety in her diet, though. Live roaches, silkworms, and black soldier fly larvae can be fed regularly. Super worms and hornworms can be fed occasionally. The more variety in their diet, the better. Mealworms and waxworms shouldn’t be fed too often (especially not waxworms). A 40 gallon would also be ideal.

It'd be awesome to use gene therapy to give gecko's the genes that allow a cockatoo to talk (or even the fox-p2 gene from humans), and after many generations of selective breeding, they might even develop a Brittish accent.

Their a desert dwelling species food isn’t always easy to come by in the wild so they store nutrient rich fat in their tails to avoid starving to death. So ideally you want their tail to be nice and fat. But that also doesn’t mean you should go several days without feeding them it just means the animal is more forgiving if you forget to feed them one day.

@@leopardgeckotalk We do have a generator in our barn, but we A) spend a ton on fuel for it to keep it running, and B) we also have a ton of other outside animals who have heat lamps and fans hooked up to it if the power goes out. Guess I need to buy another smaller one 😅 Usually it's not out for too terribly long thankfully cause the power company is always on standby (for our little neighborhood, atleast) it's just a fear I have in the winter time. Hand warmers have helped before (with a crested gecko) but I can't afford to spend all that money right now 😅
