Join Rajiv as he travels to Sweden to visit the famed bedmaker, Hästens! Jan Ryde is the great-great grandson of the company's founder, who started the business in 1852 as a saddle maker. Rajiv read Jan's book, "When Business Is Love" and was inspired to meet a man who built a successful company based on the very core principle by which Rajiv lives his life; do what you love, everyday, even if it means living a life that doesn't make sense on paper. Today Jan gives Rajiv a tour of this incredible factory where the world's finest beds are made.

As a young child of seven, one major factor in the decision to keep me back a grade was my lack of skill with cursive writing. (The style you sign off with) That one well-meaning decision brought about instant low self esteem, and a failure mindset. Now, California (not my state) is teaching cursive writing once again, after most states discontinued it as being outdated and unnecessary. My own skill, in printing and writing, is now very fine and well established. I have yet to completely heal from that early childhood trauma. It was mind controlling and life changing. I am finally coming to recognize the true inner self that you speak about here; with the beginnings of a balanced and satisfying final chapter within reach for me. Your videos are always insightful and inspiring. Thanks.

Oh, it really does matter how much it costs, because all of this perfection is very, very expensive, and people who can afford this kind of bed make a lot of money. Having nothing to do with cost, but just appreciating the value of the work and knowing that every detail has been refined to have the best possible end, is really the important thing here. It’s a philosophy that can be used in every walk of life, has largely been lost in our throw away society, and has become less and less expected. We’ve settled for mediocre everything. When we see something like this, our sense of what work is, can change. Any work, from sweeping a path, to washing our car. It is just wonderful. It sets a high standard, and isn’t that nice.

I have mixed feelings about this lovely exploration of quality and finding one's bliss. I’m happy Mr. R was lucky enough to be born into the right family and now gets to create a form of art that happens to be a bed. However, as someone who used to volunteer for a housing charity, and often needed to find mattresses at the best (often lowest) price possible, I will always remember a nine year old boy who was very excited by his first real bed and (cheap) mattress. Previously he had spent his entire childhood sleeping on a series of old sofa cushions spread on the floor. I guess I would just like to see a more fair world in which if the uber-wealthy get to sleep on a $20,000-$300,000 masterpiece of a bed, that everyone else should at least be guaranteed a bed of decent quality. We just need the will to make it happen.

Beautifully done as always Rajiv. I used to work for a Swedish company and traveled often to Sweden. Fika was the B=E-S-T. Everyone should understand the warmth and reflection time of fika as it's a state of mind as well as a refined coffee break. By the way, the pajamas you wear that match the mattress cover is splendid. Keep up the great work. You're my favorite!

Thank you for this video. It comes at just the right time. I just moved my one and only child to the Boston area. We’ve never been rich, but no matter where we’ve lived, I’ve always made sure that my daughter’s bed was one where she felt comfortable. Setting up her new room, we put thought into the mattress, bed frame that we could afford, and sheets that were soft and beautiful. Waking up feeling loved and cared for even by yourself is fantastic.

There are so many messages here, open to interpretation and idealization. As one who has lived in the higher end whatever-it-takes-craft world for a bit, it is truly a piece of heaven!!! As I was working day and night to pay the bills, little did I realize that my craftsman friends were from inherited wealth (oh, well). The garments I wove still look fresh after 40+ years, and just as stylish. No regrets, but it did not turn out to be the long-term lifestyle I envisioned. I enjoyed this video, but for those who haven't been there -- there's a lot more that goes into making it in this labor-intensive sphere, especially if you're not 4th generation. Dovetailing this video, see also Rajiv's "Visiting a Custom Upholsterer" from about a year ago. Again, highest level of upholstering, closer to home for some of us. Respect to both!

Just a question: how is the horsehair sourced? In the US, kill buyers purchase horses and ship them to either Canada or Mexico for slaughter. Some of the horses might be old or sick but they don’t deserve to go to slaughter. There are efforts in congress to end this practice, as it was ended for dogs and cats. I hope this lovely company curates the source. Thank you for this tour.

I love my country but sadly so much of this attention to detail & quality work such as that which is seen in this video is sorely lacking here.{*Edit: 'lacking' the reason being we barely manufacture anything here anymore.} Wish I could afford a Hastens 😞. I agree. It’s the speed of life. The mass production. Everyone wanting to find the most inexpensive product often because they have no choice. The whole atmosphere of this factory seems to be about caring about the staff down to caring about the workmanship and the product. It’s not like that in every work place, some places are working the staff to death, it’s all about sales figures at any cost, it’s sad how things are sometimes. The philosophy of this man is so lovely.

A lot, agreed, but for something that lasts you a lifetime and directly contributes to your health it might be worth considering. Also, i can see a lot of not-so-rich people who spend $$$$ on so called "designer" items from clothes and shoes to cosmetics to electronic to ridiculously oversized cars which contribute 0 to your wellbeing and go out of fashion 6 mths later. They are very expensive mattresses, as you would expect...with the materials and handcraftmansip and time involved. I just googled Drake's mattress. It's 400K! Holy moly..

I enjoyed seeing these hand, crafted products, and with such precision and care. It was interesting to hear about the life philosophy that underlies it. I have a lot of difficulty, though, with some of the use of some of animal products that might have come as a result of animals being killed to make luxury products for rich people. I hope that these people have found a way that I couldn’t figure out myself that allows them to make that moral reconciliation.

Absolutely beautiful. It was great to see how these beds are made from start to finish, and just how much natural human abilities go into making them. So much skills are involved rather than having a machine pump them out every 2 minutes. If only Hastens would send me one of those quick sharpish, I wouldn't mind. They must be amazing to sleep or relax in. Great vid mate.
