The Konyak tribe is one of the largest of the 16 tribes of Nagaland. This tribe is known for its head hunters, due to their history of brutal headhunting. The practice of severing heads was common practice till the 1970s. They are also known for the many body tattoos that symbolised their courage and their many victories, the more the tattoos, the more accomplished the man was.
The Konyak society is still governed by its customary laws. In this episode, we talk about their culture, the dying art of tattooing, their livelihood, and the customary laws.

First of all very thank you sir, for giving us valuable information about our tribal traditional and culture. I used to watched all episode and all are very appreciable. It's my humble request to you sir, that to also visit our tribe i.e, Wancho tribe and its very similar to those of Konyak tribe of Nagaland. We are also known by Headhunter ( heard from forefather) .Longding district Arunachal pradesh.

True.. And my dear Brother Phupang Wangpan, history says that Konyak and Wancho and same people. Konyak and Wancho tribe holds the same history such as in cultural and traditional practise. Most of Konyak villages speak the same dialects of Wancho tribe. We are artificially divided by the geographical division else today we would have been under the same umbrella. The Konyaks in Mon district considers/termed Wancho people as the Konyak and so also the Wancho regards Konyak as their people it's vice-versa. If you ever happen to visit Tizit area one of the sub-divisional Town of Mon District then you'll be astonish to see people speaking the same dialects and sharing same cultures. This is just a tip of an iceberg about the similarity between Konyaks and Wancho, there are many more which you and I need to know about our rich cultures. In fact, one more thing which I want to mentioned is that the origin of my village traced back to Wancho Naga territory. Stay Local but think globally. May you always uphold your cultural identity.

Brother, what is there in a tribe's name? Today, you call yourself a Wancho and I, a Konyak because the officials registered us so; i.e, differently. We are the same. We should not get too emotionally attached to these terms like 'Konyak' and 'Wancho'. As far as I know, the word 'khanak' in Wancho also means a person, right? The word 'Konyak' was derived from that word by the British. BTW, our culture is so old and our language so rich that it exhibits variations from region to region, but they are essentially the same. I was watching a Wanncho video the other day and I understood everything said in the video... Same language but slightly different accent and pronunciation.

Nagaland supports a flamboyant tribal culture which leaves anybody visiting the place amazed and dazzled. Nagaland might be small when measured geographically but culturally it has many flavours endowed. The traditions, fairs, festivals, art and craft of the various tribes are full of vibrant colours and energy. The zest with which people live here is inspirational. One must make the Nagaland people as their host and cherish the culture at par along with the stellar geography of the place. Long live India's diversity.... Love to all Konyak people from Bihar♥️

-The Konyaks are the original Nagas. In Arunachal Pradesh, their people are known by different names. They were collectively known as "Naga/Noka" by the Ahoms before the British (Ferangis) arrived. It was the British who assigned them these identities like Konyaks, Wanchos, Noctes, Ollos etc. and converted their identity "Naga" into a generic term to accommodate many other tribals (with distinct language and history) in the nearby region into the fold. As a result, this large original Naga ethnic group was divided up and their ancestral land cut into pieces. - Now, you might be wondering, "what about the other tribes of Nagaland, like: Ao, Sema, Lotha, Angami etc." Are they not Nagas? Well, like I said, strictly speaking, they are not. The term "Naga" was assigned to them by the "Ferangis"-- just like the way Christopher Columbus wrongly named the native Americans as red Indians, thinking his ship had landed in India.

Perfect to every sense. The term na-ga' meant a huge hole in d ear plus a loin loin cloth around d loins with d usual head hunting. Wat i mean to say is dat d 1st interaction happend with d above mentioned tribes nd afterwards it became synonimous wid most head hunting tribes under patkai mountain range. In a sense, even d heàd hunters of tribal Malaysia,Indonesia,Myanmar,Laos etc..etc.. are nagas. So d synonym( naga )should be applied to every animist, indigenous tribe dat practised head hunting, wore a loin cloth with huge ear lobes. However in our country,INDIA, certain anti-social elements manipulate it to their advantage to seek a higher hand in d negotiatios wid d govt. of INDIA. at d expense of their so called bŕethren. Lastly, being a naga myself ,i beg all my brethren to shun all d negativities nd work towards a united goal of self achievement towards a better future 4 our country ie, INDIA. The persons thinking otherwise should plan a mass exodus with their kith nd kin to d country they feel their grievances would be well adressed..

@@catchmeifyoucan3867 lol which tribe do u think we're the progenitors of the term naga? The fame and fear and bravery of the naga tribe before Britishers were related to the tribes mentioned above only. Ask the ahoms or read their buranjis you will get to know details. If your ancestors were so brave how come Britishers could subdue you but could not to our ancestors? The only reason your people an tribes are advanced than us are because you were educated by Britishers as their chamchas. We had guns and we resisted and killed Britishers they couldn't ever control us. How could they when we were always at war at those days. The ahoms respected us and feared and made friendship with us. Even phizo so called nnc leader came running in our hills when naga hills(manipur hills) was burning by Indian annexation. Our people helped and gave support that's how nscn was formed and armed groups for resistance. But what did we get in return only killings and taxation. Nagaland got all the spoonfeedin that too neglecting our brothers from Eastern parts of nagaland. That is the reason why many disassociate with the term naga because of nscns. Many young ones may not know but that won't change the fact that my and our ancestors were known as the brave Noga/noka maanu by our neighbours in the plains far earlier than Britishers. And lastly stop stealing our history and make them yours. Make your own makhel manipur history or after Britishers occupied you.

I agree that 'adiwasi' in Hindi means tribals, but over a long period of its colloquial association with tribals from the Chottanagpur region, brought by the British to work on tea plantations in Assam, the term has now become synonymous with them. Therefore, in my opinion, to avoid confusion, it would have been better if an alternative word JANJATI was used instead of adiwasi.

Please provide English subtitles. I couldn't follow some things said in the video, especially the part where the villegers spoke.. You just provided Hindi subtitles, and I'm really bad at reading Hindi. And besides not everyone speaks Hindi, so despite your immense efforts, it still remains out of reach of a lot of Indians.. particularly for those of us living in the south!

I wish the konyanks and the wanchos should have been put together in one state as same tribe. They have same tradition and custom, speaking same language but separated by the indian govt in diff states. I feel so bad that we are recognised as two different tribes of diff state. 😓
