I love seeing randomly old commanders making an appearance! We've had such an overload of new products and commanders. It's nice seeing older ones getting a chance.

Nostalgic deck indeed. I remember facing Rakdos a decade or so ago. Fun game!

Started really playing magic in Return to Ravnica, Rakdos Lord of Riots is one of my favorite cards ever. He's just outclassed now, would really love a classic commander game type, let all these oldies shine.

This is really interesting because I was playing against a Rakdos deck the other day and the deck still felt just as good as it was forever ago. The deck was threatening and hung with all the other decks at the table.

Seems like the commander has been eclipsed by Rowan scion of war, as a rakdos commander that chats mana on your spells.

Situations like these where you need a combination different things that you can put redundantly in the deck are just the right place for cheap card selection. I reckon the deck wants to cut a bit of it's top end for a package of 2cmc red looting/black reanimation, and also a couple of global haste enablers 🤔

For your final turn, with that much mana and redraws (wheel + scroll rack), doing it pre-combat would probably have saved you at least 1 planeswalker ultimate. Sneak attack + sheoldred with swampwalk (beacuse of Urborg) goes a long way.

Rakdos LOR IS inconsistent for sure. But, I think there's also some decklist issues and plays that happened. Some rambling from my limited experience... - You were already struggling from the beginning, keeping an opening hand without a pinger to get Rakdos out. Deck should run 10-15 cheap and reliable ways to do damage and get Rakdos out, and you don't leave home without one in your opening hand. - Then...expedition map should absolutely get Urborg so you can manafix. - Night's whisper is 'fine' for Rakdos LOR. Gives some cheap consistency in early hands. Probably better would be a creature that helps draw, as it could benefit from the LOR discount. Disciple of Bolas? - Razaketh is wincon, create a sacrifice loop to get whatever you need to win. In the eldrazi route any of the eldrazi that get shuffled back into the deck are infinite loops. Razaketh, search eldrazi, sac, repeat for infinite draw or removal. - Quicksilver amulet probably isn't good enough for the deck. Too slow. - Magus of the wheel probably also too slow for the deck. Should have been a wheel of fortune or something like sandstone oracle, or knollspine dragon. - Deck definitely needs flame rift. Free eldrazi for 2 mana. Torment of hailfire also solid. Dump all your mana into that for massive damage and discard, then drop your eldrazi for free. - Mana geyser and thran dynamo seem fine, though I think I'd have gone for some reanimation instead. - Necropotence swap for moonlight bargain is interesting. I think the main deal is you need to recover your hand after emptying for a big turn. Other ways of doing that include Knollspine dragon and sandstone oracle. Otherwise I agree...necropotence is not as good here as you might expect. Especially with Villis who'd also be demanding life. I've gone around this using Gary, tutored up by razaketh, and then sacced again for whatever. - Vicious conquistador is an odd card to enable rakdos. Not evasive enough for my liking. Better to have an upkeep pinger, tap to damage all opponents, or something cheap that has menace, shadow, or flying. Would have also probably NOT played him...keep in hand for when there's a boardwipe so you can have enabler ready to go and get LOR out again. This is what indeed happened to you. - Cabal coffers...another questionable include in this deck. Works out fine here, but a total dud in the first 4 turns when you desperately need to get BBRR. - Rakdos LOR needs all the footwear, deflecting swat, some reanimation helps. He will still not stick around long, so when you do, it has to be explosive. Haste can also help, provided you have enough ways to do damage pre combat. - One way to alleviate the need for 'blend' that you talk about, is going multi-purpose. For instance, dauthi voidwalker can enable AND control. Professional face-breaker can enable early game, and later still ramp or draw. There's also a host of X costed creatures that do fine early game and get real explosive later. Shivan devastator for example. I do not run the Eldrazi version, and then it is also helpful to keep colourless costs to 7 or less. One enabler plus Rakdos swing = any creature in your deck. - One way to not wait that whole turn cycle....haste. Especially on creatures such as herald of slaanesh, urabrask the hidden, along with the boots. Then, every creature needs to have a good ETB or something immediate. - Another way to struggle less, is to lean harder into the combos. Ancestral statue can kill the table out of nowhere with nettle drone or a terror of the peaks for example. Heartless hidetsugu (or any other half life effect) with archfiend of despair or bloodletter. I've had most success with Razaketh searching up a wormcoil engine. I believe razaketh tutoring up one of the eldrazi that shuffle into your deck are just instant-wins. Numerous other possible lines there. - Alternatively, leaning more into control. I've been having some success dropping Myojin of Night's Reach for 3 black. If it lands, you're likely going to win. Same with sire of insanity. Perhaps you're right and Eldrazi are not the way to go anymore. I know I stopped doing that. - Or, again, need to lean into the eldrazi harder. Run flame rift and torment of hailfire, they'll essentially make the eldrazi free with LOR on the field. In this deck you don't 'ramp' in the traditional way. You 'ramp' to get coloured mana...and then you deal direct damage for non-coloured mana. Having colourless ramp just feels bad most of the time, because that's what LOR already provides in the command zone. I make an exception in my deck for sol ring and mana vault, mostly to be able to throw out stuff faster when Rakdos is not on the field, or to pay commander tax. But..those are questionable includes. I think a build with a bunch of card draw and medium or small creatures would be OK… you can hit early with small hasty creatures like Ragavan and robber of the rich, then use card draw spells to draw and play more medium creatures? Stuff like shriekmaw can be the removal?

Yeah, I think Rakdos LoR has fallen into the "fun" trap where you freecast Eldrazi off of a nice Price of Progress or something. While that's cool AF to do and all (I had a similar deck once that did this), it's kind of christmas land to think you're always going to have both Rakdos, a damage dealer, and a hand full of eldrazi to combo off on. I do think that the truly optimal way to play it is just a passive mana discount for some mid-range creatures rather than all 8-12 drops. Still not great, which is why I took it apart, but it's a lot more manageable than the clockwork assembly of a Rakdos Eldrazi build.

Draw 2s are important to help smooth out early game draws. Get to your lands a bit faster. While higher mv burst gets stuck in hand sometimes. Rakdos still fine. Just need to build the deck better.

Just ended up taking apart my list, too many staple reanimator targets and Eldrazi that could go in a different deck. I feel like the most powerful list would be close to Andestral Statue tribal where you just try to combo kill as fast as possible, not certain though

A great way to see the evolution of legendary creature design over the last ten years is to compare Rakdos to Rowan, Scion of War. Their abilities aren't 1 for 1 comparable, but dawn does Rowan make him look like a grandpa.

I would run just the two shuffle titans then put in more reanimation and damage dealers for rakdos like creeping blood sucker and maybe some life gain effects. Like you said I think it’s just the list you’re running

I love rakdos he was the first deck i built. I play him with eldrazi and artifact creatures and i have a pet combo with razaketh, warstorm surge, and enough power in the deck to blast everyone to death😂

"Is Rakdos still good in EDH?" 22 minutes video Well, or he is or he is not 😂😂😂 Back in the day I made my Rakdos deck with a bunch of pingers and deathtouch enablers. The ideia is, you use the pingers more as mana dorks with Rakdos, and in the late game you give them deathtouch so they become removal. Also be sure to include a lot of big monsters with trample, because they become nasty with deathtouch! Unfortunately I had to pass the deck along to pay for some debts. My friend and new owner added a bunch of infect to the deck. It is counterintuitive as Rakdos needs people losing life, but he enjoys it.

Yeah, the way commander is evolving its become much more fast pace than what it was 10 years ago. Cards like the Rakdos you played, while still good. Just isn't quite as good as what's avaliable these days.
