Raleigh, NC is at a turning point, how will it respond? It’s no secret that Raleigh, NC has and is growing at a very rapid pace, with no indication of that slowing down. But with rapid growth, rapid change typically follows.
This rapid growth has fostered negative change for many cities who have experienced this before, with the perfect example of Austin, Texas.
Raleigh has an opportunity in that it still has time to be proactive in its’ preparation for the continued growth, but that window is running out quickly.
This video reviews four different categories that I believe are at a crossroads, and if Raleigh makes the wrong choice, it could have major consequences down the road that will be hard to recover from.
Check out the video and let us know what your thoughts are on Raleigh NC’s turning points.

Tree canopy. City guidelines allow them to remove old trees and replace them with young nursery trees which are sometimes monoculturally, cloned cultivars that lack genetic diversity of the former native stands. For example, red-cedar are commonly replaced by two clones called 'Burkii' and 'Brodie' and they lack the former diversity of wild populations as they originated outside NC. Same with oak species which are technically native but often from northern populations, patented clones which are grafted. Claiming they are planting native species is one of the biggest, genetic scams as these are not native genetics and never were.

Great insight here. I'm not holding my breath on change here but really wish something would. Re-plantings take so long to become mature as well, really wish they would limit the removals period.

The difference between Charlotte and the rest of the state is that Charlotte has always known what it wanted to be. City and business leaders moved heaven and earth to make it happen. Other than building belt loops that promotes sprawl, Raleigh continues to struggle with mass transit and dense population growth. Also with growth comes homelessness and downtown crime. Not much you can do about it, unless you ban them from the streets. When a city provides more services for the homeless, it attracts more to take advantage of those services. It's a vicious cycle.

Good point on the cycle - you're right some of this is just the result of growing.

Growth will continue unabated. However, attracting the next big industry or revenue producing idea is the real concern. It will determine what the future holds in store. Raleigh could be a Space, Biotech, Quantum Computing, or VC hub, etc. but that will depend on those already in power. The same traditional industries will have no impact vertically or globally. Wish Raleigh good luck, and Stay Positive.👍

Thank you! Good points on the type of industry that comes will make an impact, definitely agree there.

I think the crime downtown has to do with the free buses. Raleigh needs lighting in a lot of places especially on the interstate and highways.

That's an interesting take on the free buses, didn't think of that. Agree, we definitely need better lighting.

Austin is great, but unfortunately the problems that have arisen there are known and hopefully Raleigh can learn.

Raleigh has a big NIMBYISM PROBLEM, That put us in this mess, the average person doesn't understand supply and demand, how do explain to them for example that allowing more luxury housing to be built will actually lower rents over time and home prices if we can ever break even with demand, the more high rises downtown and north hills and all the high growth nodes density area's mean less Gentrification, but its a foreign concept and its easier to just blame the big bad developers smh.

Yea we definitely have a hard time accepting the growth in Raleigh, and even more so in the suburbs. Can't have the good things that come with the growth without doing what's necessary to properly prepare for and handle it. I do feel for those in the suburbs though who enjoyed the simple, more rural life for a while and never would have thought the growth would make it out that far.
