What is the best cheap Mountain bike? MTBs ridden at Bike Parks are expensive. How would a cheap, inexpensive MTB, like the Raleigh Tokul 3 handle the trails at Highland Mountain Bike Park?

Thanks for putting a 'budget' bike through it's paces! Not all of us are able to spend $4K and up for a full suspension carbon frame bike so it's nice to see a review on something that is realistic for most.

These days a budget can carry you further and further. If you look at companies like Commencal you can get a pretty baller full suspension Meta v4.2AM bike for ~$2100. Still a lot to handle for many riders, but bikes like that used to be double the price and not nearly as nice.

so many people buy bikes well over $1000 and never come close to abusing them like Phil did in this video. mountain biking can definitely be an overpriced pretentious sport. glad Phil is proving otherwise.

To my surprise though, the fellow that bought it from me in Asheville, NC was interested in it due to the videos you made on this bike. I wish i still had it now that i actually ride but you absolutely sent that thing, and it held up! Maybe one day ill see you on the trails here in NC. You rip!

I'm glad that Raleigh has been hanging in there with some quality bikes these last several years. They almost vanished from the marketplace a while ago, and I wasn't sure if they were even making them any more. I had an old-school Raleigh Reliant ten-speed that I upgraded as best as I could, and rode that sucker all over for two decades. It was a plain-Jane old road bike but I made it into a triple with a 7-speed rear cog and it had a lot of versatility, even with randonneur bars and rear pans. Camping, commuting, off-road, Brooks leather saddle, and a Pletscher. Some guy once biked from the US to the southern tip of South America with a Pletscher rack, and it held up for the entire trip. I had a set of Specialized Tricross tires on my Raleigh for a long time, and got to take it on some rather nasty trails without any upset. The largish road frame was only a minor hindrance on the roughest parts of some trails, but I wasn't trying to beat the hell out of it. More like a casual tour of the trails. A good, solid, well-fitted frame is the main thing. From there, you can customize a bike to suit your needs.

Thank you sooo much. I found this vid very helpful. I am past ready to upgrade from my $250 Schwinn hybrid mountain bike that I purchased earlier this year. Its a nice looking bike but I would say that this is the perfect beginner bike because it makes you work hard if your goal is to get into shape. I am in great shape but when I want to cover distance, I normally get smoked by other riders who may be traveling the same route and I really appreciate the expert opinion before I commit to shelling out big bucks for a new bike!

I've been researching this bike as I'm a 6'1" 245lbs novice and can't afford a fully. I've read owners having some hub issues but that was cleared up by Novatec in the 17 models. Also, the concern with Raleigh leaving the mtb side of business worries me. I realize parts will always be available but still... Things like derailleur Hangers even tho I probably won't ever damage one is still questionable. Keep up the awesome videos and keep on shredding man

I got one of these used off a guy who's fiance made him downsize his MTB collection. $550! Loving it. I feel tons more comfortable on technical trails compared to my older hardtail, and the plus tires and comfy saddle make riding much more pleasurable, and so happy to have disc brakes now. All I had to do was get it tuned up, and have had a great time on this (~125-150 miles ride time so far, on mixed and technical trails). No bike parks like Phil, but have jumped it a few times on smaller jumps and it feels great. Overall feel like it was a great value, and I would have been happy with it even if I had bought new.

For the price and what you get these bikes are really solid and built well. Even tho mine are the upgraded versions of them when people ask what I recommend for mid level bikes I do bring these up! They are well built, no fancy bells and whistles but they sure do the job and you have clearly shown that!

Now that I saw this video I have alot more respect for you. I didnt mean to take you to task on the Huffy bike but we both know you didnt give it a fair shake man...I knew guys back in the day who were doing superman seat grabs and backflips on equipment like the Huffy. I know the bike industry you dont get recognized unless you're the late Mirra. I know you wanted to haze the bike and mock it and point fingers at it and stand with the crowd of people who have $4,000 pieces of equipment but at one time, not too long ago, a guy who could still kick your ass would have felt grateful to get a new piece of equipment like that and would have hit jumps just as big as you just did there. I might just be too middle class but affordable to me is like under $400. Like I said before I rode a Hard Tail Haro ($300-$325) for YEARS with no crazy shit like that happening. and honestly man, the last thing is, if you work at a fucking BIKE SHOP and let that happen to you you should be ashamed. I would feel like I would have to check all the equipment you touched because you could be a huge liability...I wouldnt have even posted the video because I would be afraid everyone would know it was the rider and not the equipment. Now with that said...that was a fucking sick flip though dude, fist bump for that shit, more balls than I had to try it. You really have to have "The Right" kind of lip to go for that kind of shit...like you wont see guys try to 360 a backflip style jump with a hard tail unless the jump is absolutely massive and has enough room to have a variety of lips on it. Idk, I just grew up to be grateful for anything you get and I know for a fact I would be riding everything the exact same in a year and I would be on the same trails as everyone else. LoL it was hard to get thick tubes back then! The biggest problem most of us had was blowing tubes out (I rode BMX before I realized at about 9-10 I rode in the woods alot and wanted a better piece of equipment for where I spent most of my time). Mongoose PRO Rogue in deep blue...one heavy mother fucker to go dirt jumping with...my legs were then and still are like tree trunks. I was like a king to be able to choose a bike to ride depending on where I was going, you have no idea. Def sub'ing and I think I might marathon your channel today for sure...Biking was a huge part of my life like breathing is, just watching videos now makes me wonder what im doing in my life without a bike right now. My last one got stolen by some fucking scumbag right off the side of my house. I gave my hard tail away to someone who wanted a bike for Christmas and their parents couldnt get them one. I wish I knew if they still have it somewhere, I wouldnt mind getting it back...It almost killed me, we have a bond like that, you know...that may have had some reason on why I gave it away...We were having a lovers quarrel over its derailer...not only that I did it in front of my then girlfriend on a jump I had hit thousands of times and like we do, I tried to go bigger than I usually did to show her how awesome I was, almost bottomed out the landing and the next thing I can remember is being drug up the hill out of the way of the jump by two of my friends and my gf watching to see if I was going to wake up...Dude, you HAVE to have a good spill story, at least answer this with something so I know I didnt just sit here and vomit this bullshit out for nothing, and that bullshit with people even mentioning the way you talk is stupid, I think you talk just fine.

The Tokul was on my long list of bikes I was considering for my first bike. Well test road one today after Trek told me it would take three months to receive my Roscoe 8. Long story short I bought a 2017 Tokul 3 today. They had a sale on left over 2017 models and they offered another 10% off, so $850 out the door. I feel I got a lot of bike for very little money so I'm extremely happy.

Good video and great to see a quality rider not poo-pooing a bike just because it's cheap or not a cool brand. GCN take note!

Bought my granddaughter a used Talus. Really a well put together bike with a good selection of components. I've swapped a few of them around for upgrades and she's been putting it through the paces. My aunt bought a Raleigh too on my recommendation. Shame they're pulling out of this market it seems, but hey, more love for Diamondback then.

To be totally honest Phil, you are WAY too good for that bike! What i mean is that because you are such a skilled rider, you give the bike a relatively easy time, despite sending it off what would be considered pretty serious trail features!! I've seen lots of people land harder from a 2 foot drop that you did off that 20 foot one ;-)

I was thinking of buying a 2017 Diamond Back Heist 2.0. I heard that Raleigh and DB are owned by Meyer now? Great video. Amazing trails.

Ripperrrrr! And for what it's worth, Raleigh probably heard through the grapevine you were trying it out in review and KNEW they'd need to raise the price! HAHA
