Looked into during lockdown with the possibility to getting a job with them, as I live in Speyside. The warning bells started to ring when the majority of them struggled with the pronouncing of many of the distilleries Craig el latch chee and 14 different versions of Daliuaine. They were asking if I could buy casks for them for under £2000 each.

I bought 3 Octave sherry casks - did it all myself with no broker or middle man. That way I knew what was involved every step of the way. All from Glenglassaugh. They all taste fantastic - one Oloroso , one PX and one Amontillado. All under 6 years old and all 56 % -58% , ncf and nc. Final cost averaged £57/ bottle.

Thanks Ralfie. Just recently escaped being scammed by a very clever outfit with a London address that pretends to be related to a reputable bank and even uses a highly reputable escrow mediator. I’m a fairly intelligent person prone to paranoia rather than trust but they nearly got me! 👍

Then there is the story of investors Bill and Kate Miles: "Where's our whisky? Investors demand answers over missing casks worth thousands. Speyside Distillers says that investors' casks can't be found because 'our records are complex and incomplete'"

IIRC they got paid out after some larger media outlets started covering the story. The Miles got paid ~ £16k, and another family received ~ £33k (who were somehow missing an entire hogshead); considering Dr. Miles had been stonewalled repeatedly for several years prior, the sudden turnabout & payments seemed very much designed as a "make this negative story go away & stop any further inquiries" solution rather than any genuine contrition .

Great advice Ralfy! Unfortunately, many people don't understand the ins and outs of whisky maturation, the impact of different casks and quality of casks, the impact of warehousing, moving casks around, and temperature fluctuations, the impact of leakage and angels share, as well as costs associated with bottling and taxes. Buying a cask or even a share in a cask isn't something I am likely to do. Cheers!

Far from making the job of the Cask Investment Scammers more difficult, the Government is in the process of removing the one legal hurdle they currently have to face in order to own casks in a bonded warehouse in Scotland!!

Yeah these companies try and sell you refill grain hogs heads 🤮 gotta be careful what you buy. Some I've seen at auction are bottling remnants. People also forget that you have duty and bottling costs which is the same money again on the price of the casks.

Top tips as ever Ralfy. Who hasn't looked at owning a cask? Then you dig into it via an internet search engine and find out the full cost over a prolonged period of time. To each their own.

Just tried a peated whisky for the first time. Bowmore 12. Not sure how i feel about it. I get it. It tastes like a mouthful of bonfire

Peat can definitely take a bit of getting used to, so I'd definitely recommend sampling a variety of peated drams - unfortunately Bowmore 12 is quite 'meh' nowadays; a watered-down supermarket shelf filler that's a shadow of it's former self. If it's the peat itself you're unsure of, try dialling it down a notch & go with a lightly-moderately peated option like Talisker 10, Benromach 10, Ardnamurchan AD, Kilkerran 12, or Compass Box Peat Monster (a blended option). If you're okay with the heavy peat & think the whisky itself at issue, try going with a few quality stalwarts like Ardbeg 10, Laphroaig 10 or Quarter Cask, Port Charlotte 10 Heavily Peated or Ledaig 10. (I can't speak as to international pricing, but every bottle I've listed is available for £50 or less here in the UK).

2:14 great advice. I chose years ago to stay well away from cask ownership thznk goodness. Get rich quick schemes are to be avoided at all costs.

All I know is that I bought a cask for £1000 in 1994 with a mate as a bit of fun and sold it for £76000 in 2020. There are plenty of bona fide cask investment companies , just do your own research.

If you can’t taste a cask, why on earth would you invest? If it tastes great, you can bottle it anytime you want or sell it anytime you want then I would feel much better.

While some scams are definitely easier to fall for than others, I’ve been there believe me. I think you would have to be foolish to spend that amount of money and do zero research and just take the seller’s word for everything. That’s not just lazy that’s downright stupid. But yes, they DO need informing properly 100%

When i was young, i had plenty of opportunity to buy a cask, but never the money. Now i have the money, i think it's too much of a hassle. Thank you Brexit....
