I love my bottle of batch 1/23, 57.2%. Anyone tried that one and other batches in comparison?

Had a bottle of these a few years ago. Bought it again yesterday. One of my favorites. Edit : About your remarks on Lagavulin... A standard 12 y.o. Lagavulin goes for 1,5 times the money as this Kilchoman here in Belgium. Lagavulin used to be one of my favorites but it seems to be so overhyped nowadays and because of that...heavily overpriced. And if Lagavulin has indeed gone to an automated, industrial, way of producing....then I remember a wisdom you stated in an old review. One you did a long long time ago (you probably still had the beard, haha) : When the distiller keeps giving in to demand and profit, the quality will wane...

Whisky Companies should be a lot more generous with miniatures in general. When one buys an expensive bottle - it should definitely come with 1 or 2 minis. Also, the high price of minis should be refunded if one buys a full bottle off the back of it?

Oooh, thanks for this my Peaty Pal! This is available in my shops and a steal of a price ...super A good alternative to the over priced Lagavulin 16 which although good, is a bit dry and not any better to my palate than the improved base offering from Talisker 10 yo. Here we Skye's long standing Malt presenting a much improved ' Hoi Palloi version which is now much smoother and fuller bodied than it was before- a rare example of the standard offering being taken seriously as a start point for enthusiasts and a competitive stand point for the consumer. ( contra the sacriledge of Macallan c 2000 when their magical 10 lost all qaulity)

A very interesting comment on the nature of the spirit and the lighter chemistry going on by the time the Malt casks meet their mixer. I suspect they sling in some older casks and dont use caramel though, because it gets very dark as you know up at even 15 yo. and loses a good deal transparency by 18! - Fell upon this Whisky as a 4 ages miniature pack and found out my best friend lived 2 miles from the distillery in deepest AberSheepshire! - The younger whisky revealing the character of the spirit, yes, very well observed. This is why I prefered the (good old days) Macallan 10 to their 18, which goes fusty on the shelves of pubs and wasnt worth forking out for unless the bottle was relatively new and just oxidised a bit perhaps.

The only Auchentoshan I can get hold of is the triple wood NASty! I am loathed to buy whisky made from great casks with a cheaper carrier spirit maybe as young as a 3 yo. Convince me otherwise?

New Malt Mention: "Maltentious Malt Masters"
@keithmelvin-uk7vu3 күн бұрын
Interesting review Ralfy..... I had the same disappointment in a parallell way with both the first widespread Port Finish , Glen Morangie, and then more recently the Bourbon cask finished Auchentoshan ( which IIRC was a NASty I should have know better to avoid) ...The port wine was astingent and a little dry, colour was even a little off putting and it didnt do much for Glen Morangie of which I am not a fan anyway. Looks like Adelphi have gone for casks with good colour and maybe not payed too much attention to the blended result. This perhaps reflects the marketing men having taken over with " breath of" branding, thus taking appearance over content. I am not a big fan of this at all as it takes away from the skill, heritage and massive knowledge that distilleries own master blenders and distillers have which are maybe not as transferable to these independents as they go shopping, or maybe they just don't employ masters craftsfolk !!

Marketing is a needed evil. Any brand will want to listen for positive buzz and play off it, and if there is none they’ll want to try to start it. This used to be done simply by the bottle shape and the label. Then by ornate boxes, but now it’s all that and into the internet, TV, store promos, bar girls offering samples and so much more. Fair play, doesn’t bother me as long as the bottlings are still good and affordable.

I have the 55.2% version of the BotH which I bought on sale, having liked versions of the Breath of the Isles. What Ralfy says about the 52.7 goes for mine about letting it rest, though mine seems less tannic and less sour. I may have more tolerance for aggressively sherry casked whisky but certainly there is no way to even guess which distillery or even region it's from. Mind you if you look at the colour and like sherried whiskies, you might not care.

Since I drink bourbon, I regularly run into whisky that tastes heavily of barrel. Industrial corn is a rather neutral grain, and in well aged bourbons, most of the flavor comes from the barrels. Sometimes, I like to embrace the beast rather than tame it and allow an angry, aggressive whisky to knock me around a little. A bourbon with too much age, such as Knob Creek 18-year, has lots of barrel to chew on, and any bourbon from Garrison Brothers is loaded with that Texas funk, which I find appealing, but it isn't for everybody. With single malts, I don't like the character of the malt to be completely overwhelmed by the barrel, but an aggressive, beastly Sherry barrel can taste good anyway, and I think it could be useful in a booze-forward cocktail such as a Manhattan. I bet it would make a good Rusty Nail too.

Another thing to do with a belligerent sherried malt like this, for those who found the likes of Laphroaig or Ardbeg too intense, add a few drops of this to a dram of the peat monster. And since Drambuie was mentioned... Ralfy, I bought Drambuie 15 because I saw you review it, and because the price was good. It's far too sweet and herbaceous for me to enjoy on its own, but a drop or three in a dram of a peat monster also brings out a lot of interest. I have since grown to like any level of peat on its own merits, so it doesn't really bother me, but I do prefer the sherry influence in peated malts, and some subtle sweetness does it good.

Good advice as always Ralfy! I've had a few bottles now that when I first tried them, they weren't that good. Difficult to find flavours, closed in, a bit harsh and astringent. But after having a couple of drams and then leaving for a few months, when I've gone back to them, they have completely changed for the better. Others have actually transformed in the glass over about 20 -30 minutes. It definitely pays to take your time with whisky. Cheers!

Greetings Mr Ralfy and thank you for another informative video. Cigarettes have been in plain boxes hidden in the cabinet for a few years now here in Australia.And since July , vape is illegal now, and I believe the government realised they are not making any money from it unlike tobacco. I don't think they will hide alcohol like cigarettes , if they do, people gonna be mad. Back to whisky, I looked for this one and couldn't find it anywhere in Australia. With living costs sky-rocketing, these days I look for cheap good above average single malts. Loch Lomond is a good cheap one that I buy often and get 30% discount using UberOne ordering. 12 year old snd 18 are good and all bottled at 46%. A while back, I bought Redbreast Lustau, and last weekend, I tried it again after a few weeks. It was sensational.Have a great day.
