So glad to see you doing anCnoc review and even happier that you mentioned the Cask Strength 16 year old 125th anniversary limited edition. From 2016 to 2021 I was going into several local liquor stores each week, looking for unicorns, and where I live in Canada they keep the higher priced or less available items in a locked display case. About 4 years ago I was on my weekly drop in and noticed 2 bottles of anCnoc in the display case, and one of them was the cask strength 16 YO 125th edition.....so I bought it. I just went through your videos and noticed you did a review of it 2 years ago in ralfy review 832. I still havent opened this one yet, but will wait until I have a few fellow malt mates over to open it and have a taste. Serendipity at work here! Cheers!

@jtf2dan I had the same experience as you, finding this in Ontario a few years back. I picked up both the Peated 125th and the 16 CS 125 Anniversary. The peated was to die for, and the 16 is a cracker. You're going to thoroughly enjoy it!! It's a beautiful, dirty, worm tub whisky 😊 Marian 🇨🇦

I understand Ralfy scales down the grading system, but I felt this Ancnoc 18 deserves 85-87 points even higher! Along with Ledaig 18 and Deanston 18, these are 3 of my beloved 18 years whiskies!!

I don't know about the rating per se but the Deanston 18 is up there with the best whisky, age no bar, that I've tasted thus far

Truth be told, I've been seeing Ralfy's reviews for many years, but I've never understood his scoring system and let me explain. The scale is from 1 to 100 and only whiskeys that meet a minimum are included, that is, Ralfy is not going to "humiliate" any whiskey, it is phenomenal up there. But, what I don't understand is: what whiskey deserves a 100? or a 95? If 80 is "the minimum", the vast majority of whiskeys that it evaluates are closer to being mediocre than to being very good. The logical thing would be that many of the best ones were well over 90 and that one from time to time was a 100. Then there are things that are a bit more "picky" like lowering a whiskey's score for having color or filtering, it is common for him to say: "this x whiskey is 84, but because it has added color, or is chill- filtered, or for another reason, it It went down to 82... I would say: it's 84, but it could be an 88 or 90 if it wasn't chill-filtered, or it didn't have added color, or it had a higher ABV... I don't know, these are things I think.

Love AnCnoc 18. In the last couple of years this natural color Whisky has become quite a bit darker in color. Found myself with a bottle of light and dark so opened both and did many side by side tastings. I found I much preferred the light one as it has more of the bright spirit character I love about AnCnoc. For a dark one I would have the 24 but love the light 18 as it has a foot in both worlds, youth and maturity. Cheers Ralfy

I was at a tasting with distillery manager Gordon Bruce (lovely man), and he confirmed himself that the latest batches are sweeter and more overtly sherried, but he also added that they don't know why! He said they've been making it the same way as before, but it's turned out different recently. Maybe something to do with the make-up of the casks themselves.

Thanks Ralf, again, for your great review. I do recommend the annual vintage releases of AnCnoc, 2009 is the one that is currently available. Great casks that they've put together. Around 50€ here in Germany.

HI Ralfy. I spent some time at Knockdhu back in 2019 and it's one of my favorite paces. The distillery manager there is a friend and down to earth gent as are the brand offerings.

Nice review again Ralphy. I still havent tried the 18 yet but will in due time. Its definitely in the upper regions of my budget. Unfortunately the 24 is too expensive for me just now but you never know. I love the 12 and think its probably the best "entry" level whisky you'll get. Even with lower abv and filtering its still lovely. Certainly better than anything else its price level or a little higher (Glenlivet, Glenfiddich and such). In my opinion, of course 😉

How much could global warming be affecting whisky maturation? We know that only small changes in temperature averages have dramatic results, and almost every accurately measured heat record is recent, so could age statements now vs 1923 be quite different?

I'm off to Spain as usual soon, and I know you will probably gag, but I will be buying a few bottles of Black and Red Absinth. I do like it, and will occasionally mix it with a bit of something when I get home, I call it a bomb. It is awesome, but probably not on the drinks radar. (and sorry about mixing.)

Yes, it's called The Ralfy Factor. Say what you will, whiskies rated high by you tend to pick up traffic and, with it, price. Akin to The Chivas Regal Effect.

When Ralfy says to add water to a whisky slowly, he certainly doesn't do that in his videos. I think most whisky drinkers would recommend adding water a drop or a few drops at a time. Just something to consider. Drowning a whisky is a thing and your dram won't come back from it.

I find Mortlach and Benromach to be very un Speyside like, thank goodness. I prefer a little edgier malt like that of the Ben Nevis or Edradour. Too much of Speyside stuff is way too polished and lacks being interesting. I like some edges on my malts

Great review s usual Ralfy, in 2021 you gave this a 90/100, has the quality dipped 7 points or is your scoring becoming more stringent?

I thought the same… when I remember other reviews with a score of around 83 and what was mentioned there, it seems quite low for „highly recommended“ 18 year old… I mean Knockando 12 scored 84, also Clynelish 14 and Bowmore 15 were similar… However, always enjoyable to watch your reviews:) And Ancnoc 12yo is one of the best 40% whiskies out there. So I think I will need to get a bottle of the 18yo

@@Tobey1003 IMO Ancnoc 18 is far superior than the ones you mention. Scoring has come down I believe. I will say it has been 4 years or so since I purchased the Ancnoc 18.

The numerical scores have lost a bit of their relevance. Was always nice to buy a Ralfy 88+. I think he's not able to justify the price by BSing about tasting the age. I have a nearly full bottle and there's one more on the shelf locally. And the price did go up quite a bit. If he had scored it 87 I would splurge and buy it tomorrow. Instead of drinking along, I poured the 14 year 2001, added a dash of 54% Blass nas and a dash of peated Rascan. I love integrity malts.

Just what I was thinking! Coincidentally, I picked up two on Amazon last week, as they had 25% off. I'd searched for a review, found Ralfy's from 2021, and thought 90 sounded excellent. Given there was lots of talk of consistency in this review, please help me explain how this only scored 83.

Hey Ralf Can you please help me with something. The highland region is so spaced out and funnily enough, some of my favourite whiskys are from the region e.g. Balblair, Deanston. But I've always struggled to pin down the signsture of a highland whisky. Can you shine some light on this?

Ralfy's verbs. Peatty, full bodied, well rounded, notey, earthy. Not all verbs used in this review , but overall. Whenever I try whiskey, regardless if I sip, swirl, down a shot, the only taste I sense is burning.

Hiho, please do not buy this whisky.😊 Do not listen to our Ralfy. Help to keep it under the radar. Leave it on the shelves for me. Knockdhu is one of my favourite distillery nowadays apart from Pulteney and Ardnamurchan. Cheerio from a pat- and maltmate in Germany

The worst thing about AnCnoc whisky is that they massively mispronounce how to say the words An Cnoc in English, on their bottle they say "A Nok" which is completely wrong. It's pronounced "An Krok" at worst you could say "An Knok" but never "A Nok". This has always bothered me as a gaelic speaker about this whisky, which is a good dram but if you're going to use gaelic to promote your product, and worse, tell people how to say it, at least learn it properly.
