This explains so much. When I moved back to the US in 1987 I bought a bottle of Talisker to celebrate, and it was wonderful. About 10 years ago I gave up on it. I'm back, enjoying the distillers edition but it's been a long changing trip.

I recently inherited two bottles of 1950's White Horse Cellar made from the original recipe of 1746 (or so the label tells us) I sold one to a local Whiskey Merchant for £100. Its now on the website for £500. I couldn't sell the other bottle because it had some evaporation (about a third). So i decided to open it in the hope the contents were still drinkable. Low and behold it is magnificent! Truly unbelievable. Seventy years old and it has matured and mellowed in a very special way. Its so good i'm tempted to buy back the one i sold! hahahaha

This video is one of the reasons why I love watching your reviews. You're a treasure trove of knowledge and not only about whiskies. Your blunt honesty is so refreshing in this world "sponsored reviews". I have a bottle of the new Talisker 10 and I quite like it. There's a slight saltiness, honey texture and most importantly for me, the peatiness is not overwhelming. I find it quite well balanced. It's there but it's not in your face all the time.

I bought 2 bottles in 1995 before leaving England, at the time it was my favorite whisky. Fast forward to 2022 and i opened one of the bottles, it was just as I remembered, salty briny smokey a real taste of the Scottish Islands. I compared it with a modern bottling and yes it is a very different dram now, I will hold onto my other bottle for a wee while longer, at least until the urge gets to me and I pop the cork once more...

I think Talisker is an exceptional whisky that Diageo has tried to destroy by all means possible. The day Diageo hires a CEO who is fond of whiskey and has half a brain, they will release versions with integrity, even if it is in secret, without publicity, for those of us who have abandoned Diageo for other distilleries that care about the quality consumer, those of us who don't mix whiskey, those who don't destroy it in cocktails. I can only imagine the pain of those who work in those distilleries and see how their product is dyed, filtered, homogenized, for the taste of mass consumption.

Like Blue Label, it's all just "made safe for the mainstream market" with the edges knocked off. Once, at the Talisker Distillery's gift shop, a customer asked for an expression that the shop didn't have and didn't even know was in production, so that's how far people can be out of the loop. People like to believe that whisky is somehow handmade by the dram by little Keebler whisky elves using time-honored traditions and methods... without bothering to consider that Talisker makes some 2.6 million litres annually.

Hey, Ralfy! I've been tasting a bottle of Talisker 10 (produced in 2021) for 4 months now. Pretty competent malt, although I cannot help the feeling of it being highly engineered. While it doesn't lack character completely it is still very compact whisky. Some may say it is balanced but for me it is rather a little too measured to specification. For the price of roughly equivalent of 26.50 pounds by current exchange rates that I paid for my bottle in Bulgaria I don't regret a bit. However, the whisky fell quite short to impress me enough in order to secure a second purchase any time soon. If this (and maybe Clynelish 14) is the best core range malt Diageo can churn out I feel sorry for those who buy their other products. I don't have liver, time and money to waste on mediocrity at best. Cheers!
@AdlerDanEgoe
@AdlerDanEgoe Жыл бұрын
I'll add to that comment about engineered profile. Every dram of talisker 10 from my bottle tastes and opens up exactly the same way. Same as a few months ago, same as today. It was quite shocking experience to me, certainly the first time I noticed this phenomenon. In my limited experience, usually the malt changes as the fill level goes down in the bottle. You notice some different nuance with every other dram. Not here. Try two drams of talisker back to back and you're in for some heavy deja vu.

4:05 I've noticed a lot of distilled beverages doubling in price in the last few months. And not just Scotch (which prices here in the USA were bad enough to start), but the domestic brands as well. Mellow Corn, which you reviewed four years ago now, has jumped up in price in the last 5 months. In February I bought a 750ml bottle for a reasonable $7.99 locally. I went to buy a few more last week and it was going for $17.99 for the same bottle now! And don't even get me started on how Scotch and Irish Whiskey prices are going through the roof lately. And it's not just the single malt blends that are rising in price into the stratosphere. Even blended versions are climbing in price, but not as high yet. It's why I'm stocking up on those like Grant's, Black and White, and John Barr at the moment when I can afford them. I have a feeling we are about to see a repeat of the 90s cigar craze where there will be very little of quality on the shelves, and what little we will be able to purchase will be absolute garbage and horrendously priced. Won't stop those who will buy anything just to be seen as "hip". I predict we will have a rough decade, just like the cigar market did, until production catches up just as a new fad takes over. Buckle up, lads and lassies, it's going to be a rough ride for a while.

I do like Talisker but know it could be better which is why i don't pay full price for it. However, its great entry for people wanting to try peated or 'maritime' styles. The 10 is a bottle that should be in everyones collection. It has a little bit of everything in it. I agree that with some water and some time it really brings out a lot of sweetness to go along with some saltyness and ashy campfire.

I think Talisker 10 is still one of the best values there for entry level single malts. It's almost as readily available as Glenfiddich 12, about the same price and way tastier. I usually recommed it to my friends wishing to start trying single malts. I just wish Diageo hadn't made the 18yo so outageously expensive :(

Unfortunately Talisker 10 took a big jump up in price in Canada. I can’t call it a value malt anymore…wish it was, as I really enjoy it. Glenfiddich 12 is $80 and Talisker 10 is $123 in my market - just for reference.

I thought my market was pricey, and yet I can get a full liter of Talisker 10 for 65 euros, and I bought the new 18 for 133 euros at the beginning of the year (what a bargain in hindsight, a very good yet over-processed single malt). The talisker 10 I picked up in December also had a mist. Likewise clynelish 14 picked up in February. As they're both near 46% they don't need chillfiltering so maybe diagio are having a little quiet experiment without bothering to change the label. For what it's worth I think both bottling are very good and like you I do know what clynelish 14 and talisker 10 were like in the 90s. If anything newer talisker seems peatierthan it has been for a long time.

I had the 10 yr old years ago and loved it. I bought this 1ltr 45.8% at the airport recently leaving Glasgow. I kinda regret it now. For the same price I could’ve gotten Ardbeg 10 750ml. I’d just been to the Pot Still pub in Glasgow the day before and had tried a good few peaty Islay malts I’d been meaning to (the price of good whisky/whiskey in Ireland is insane) and had some nice stuff like Caol Ila 12 and the Ardbeg 5. Maybe the memory of those tainted the Talisker. It’s decent but short on the finish, scarcely peated and not very full bodied at all. I remembered Talisker as a rich, honeyed and quite peaty whisky.

I've had the same experience with Talisker as you. I bought my first bottle of Talisker 10 around 10 years ago and happend to stumble on your fist review. Been a regular since. I loved Talisker for a really interesting lanoline note it used to have. It went really well with the phenolic notes. Around 5 years ago that note went away and some batches were less than good. Stopped drinking Talisker altogether. Picked up the newly packaged 10 today to see if anything has changed and saw you reviewed it. It's ok now. Not a bad whisky at all, but it lacks a lot of what made Talisker great. That said, I still think it's a decent whisky. I would rate it a little higher, as I actually enjoyed it.

Talisker 10 was one of the first whiskies I tried. And it was a very good start, back then. Through the years I also picked up on the inconsistencies, shall we say, so I steered clear of it. And it bothered me. Only recently I bought this exact bottle again (yes, in a super market, not one of the local specialist shops) as part of rekindling my love of single malts (stage: recalibration. Or, better put, setting a mark between mediocre, "popular" drams and integrity bottlings. For instance, an unopened bottle of Arran 10 is also on my shelf. Just saying 😁). I knew it has added colour in it (after all, in Germany they put it on label). I suspected it was chill-filtered - I have to open the bottle, add a bit of water and then I will come back to tell you my findings. But I must say, it is such a relief seeing you giving it a decent malt mark! I can sample the bottle with hope, because it seems there may be some in it again...

Adding water is a such a nice bit of witchcraft- I was skeptical about it - but talisker, deanston, clynlish (spelling?) benefit so much from it

I have a soft spot in my heart for Talisker. Ralfy is right: the casks could be better and no need for colorant or other measures. Still, I think this is an excellent beginner whisky/enjoyable. I especially like the grapefruit zest note.

Last bottle of 10yo I had pre covid was utter rank. It went from one of my favourite whiskies years ago to bottom of the pile. Maybe time to give it another try.

This was the bottle that turned me onto more complex whiskeys just a short 5-6 years ago. Unfortunately it is now 50% more expensive here in the Toronto area ($150) and it just doesnt have the luster for me that it used to

people have already mentioned the 45.8% = 80 proof. But as to how it ended up the bottling strength, I believe the distillery managers had some input in the Classics Malts bottlings when launched. Talsiker DM wanted to continue 80 proof bottling like pre-classic malts 8 year old Talisker. If only if I could remember where I learnt this from.....

I too don’t understand the “need” for decimal percentages. I’m sure there’s more pretension behind it than anything else (“look how exact and scientific we are!”). I also don’t understand why proof exists (at least still here in the US since it’s really just twice the ABV percentage in liquors). Maybe it’s of use to brewing or something but to have it on the bottle when it’s just the simplest of mathematical translations for a percentage is superfluous. Just stick with percentages, and no decimals. Disingenuous messaging has long overwhelmed the American whiskey industry, especially bourbon but will soon flood American Single Malt. I just consider it commercial propaganda, which is not relegated solely to major corporations. Many smaller distilleries are simply full of it.

This is a whisky that has a special place in my heart because is the first single malt that I drank back when I was 22 years old. That being said, I moved to New Mexico, USA and the price here is ridiculous for the Talisker 10 YO the range is $90 to $100 which is not worth it. I like Talkiker but not at that price, I only buy it if I go to Texas which I could find it between $60 to $65. It’s really sad that most Scotch has these new upped prices which is making me really think about my purchases.

45.8℅ abv is the exact percent at which the solids can form a mist. I think I 46℅ bottling are just rounding-up so that there's some margin . I do like this one. The best of the supermarket fodder.

Recent bottle I purchased was a big improvement over the previous 2019 bottle. This time around it was not harsh and had a much sweeter profile. Also have unopened 2012. Well technically it’s from 2002, bottled in 2012. Anyone know if that year was good for this distillery?

Hi Ralfy, I think that the chief reason for Talisker to bottle this whisky at 45.8% instead of the rounded 46% ABV is that they want to differentiate this product from the Ardbeg Ten, which is bottled at 46% ABV and is produced not far from them, albeit on a different isle. I could be wrong. What do you think?
@paradoox02459
@paradoox02459 Жыл бұрын
No, it's tradition. 45.8% ABV is 80 UK Proof. Many things including some of the Port Askaigs are also bottled at 45.8%.

Regarding Scotch mist, I used to do the same experiment with the old discontinued wonderful 57 degrees North and and can tell you that after only an hour, the glass would turn dirty and cloudy. could it be that they have stopped chill filtering the new Talisker 10? I really can't believe it.

I hope so but as Ralfy stated, I just think it was accidental. I don't care what propaganda comes out of corporate marketing departments, no customer "demanded" chill filtration.
