Today we get behind the wheel a slept on chassis for rallycrossing. It's AWD drivetrain, 6 speed manual transmission, and low price make it a great contender for a budget rally build. There is nothing drastic in modifications, but just enough to enhance the driving experience on a loose surface.

Good honest review but have to disagree with some of the comments on it being cheap. It is solidly built, overbuilt perhaps. For over a decade ago these had disc brakes, EBD, a selectable awd (for a budget car I cant think of selectable awd except perhaps Mitsu RVR / outlander sport). It has utility written all over, there is a foldable trunk shelf, hooks to hang grocery bags, roof rails, heated mirrors. It is a mountain goat in snow, often puts bigger 4wd vehicles to shame due to its light weight / agility and of course excellent awd system. In my humble opinion back in 2006/07 Suzuki invented the subcompact crossover which everyone is going crazy over now but they sucked in marketing, sucked is actually an understatement. I have had mine for 10 yrs now and talk about solid reliability and low cost of maintenance. Have all terrains on mine and it is a fun car. PS - do u know it has more headroom than a 4runner ? and perhaps the biggest windshield and windows :)

Hey Sanjay, Looking back on this video I do feel as if I was a little harsh about the cheapness. It wasn't that bad, just was no luxury car but that wasn't the intention of this car. Overall it felt solid like you said. You must have a more extensive perspective since you've owned one for 10 years, so appreciate the input here :)

Favorite car I've ever owned, so much that I've had two of them, both 5 speed manual, immediately got another after the first was totalled. You should know that there are different trim levels, my first was a Sport with a spoiler, cruise and radio controls on the adjustable steering wheel with a built in touch screen navigation system feat USB, SD card and aux. My current one is a Touring and instead of the touch screen console it has a flip up Garmin on the dash, 6 disc CD changer, no spoiler but same features on the wheel plus heated seats. Excellent for camping, all terrain and all weather. Plus a 2wd/automatic AWD/locked 4WD switch at this price point and more HP then other similar size budget hatchbacks and of course the WRC heritage in it's DNA. It's a real shame that Suzuki left the US market a number of years ago. Love it, and glad you had fun! One more thing, a simple and probably first thing you should do if you are a first time buyer is swap the basic stock street tires with more capable all terrain truck tires and for a nice to have is also swap out the shifter knob with an aftermarket one - the stock one is kinda crap, lol.

Steering wheel actually does have a height adjustment lever although it's kind of hidden away if you didn't already know it was there it's very easy to miss. The model in the video is a base version thus very basic but there are other versions which have any more options and features such as steering wheel mounted stereo buttons and cruise control, built in nav unit, additional audio connect options, auto-compass mirror, heated seats, heated mirrors, fog lamps, rear hatch spoiler and whale tail, ESP, and some other niceities. The reason Suzuki sold a very basic model like the one in the video was because at the time Suzuki was marketing the SX4 as "the most affordable AWD car in the U.S." thus Suzuki needed to produce a fair amount of these basic versions (versus the higher trim versions of the same car) to go along with that marketing angle. The thing to keep in mind is that both the interior and exterior of the SX4 (even the 2013 model) were nearly identical to the new for 2006 first models that rolled off the assembly lines (2007 for the U.S.) thus by the time 2013 rolled around the design was already feeling outdated. ln retrospect the reason why Suzuki did not do a major update of the design was because it had already been decided back in 2011 that the SX4 was to be discontinued altogether and replaced with new from the ground up model that would become the Suzuki S-Cross, but by that point Suzuki had already seen the writing on the wall (as far as its U.S. sales were concerned) and did not seek out U.S. emissions or crash data on the S-Cross for the U.S. market, thus why they kept the production of the dated SX4 design going all the way through 2013, by which point Europe was already seeing the S-Cross hitting their roads. The S-Cross specifically did address the cargo room and overall vehicle length limitation that was lacking in the SX4. So sad that the U.S never got to see the S-Cross or the newest "similar in spirit" successor of the SX4 the "New Vitara" (not to be confused with the Grand Vitara) both of which have been doing well in other parts of the world. As far as the 2006 through 2013 SX4 though, what you will find is that most people who purchased these cars and currently still own them (or people who are only now just discovering them) rarely purchase these as an intended family car, but rather either as an inexpensive, easy to maintain, zippy compact for use around town for which they do not want to use their SUV and love how easy the SX4 is to park in crowded urban areas, or precisely for the type of thing you are doing in this video and that is as a capable softroader that 90% of the time will only be carrying themselves and their outdoor gear, or an occasional co-pilot, leaving the entire rear of the car (with rear seats folded down) as more than enough cargo room for a weekend getaway to the mountains. Once you actually drive an AWD car as small as the SX4 on soft roads and you realize the fun that can had with a little, tossable unit like this that isn't quite the same in bigger, heavier AWD drive vehicle such as a Forrester, CRV, Rav4 etc, that is when the case for the SX4 really sinks in and you actually get it. On a side note, l've actually seen that particular car from this video on several occasions being that l live in the PNW as well. Where ever that car is parked it never fails to get a lot of people interested in it. Last time l saw it was when it still had the lift kit with some fat, chunky all terrain tires. There has been an update to that specific lift kit that to help address the strut sheering issue which some have had better luck with. The one "annoying" thing that most SX4 owners would agree with is the size of the gas tank which at 11.1 gallons means more frequent than desirable stops at the gas station. Did you say SX4 rally? ----- > kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fr6iY7mlsc-ml4E.html

@JA-rn5qv
@JA-rn5qv 2 жыл бұрын
@@danherrick5785 It's now much easier to get parts for Suzuki vehicles that it was when Suzuki was still selling cars here because after Suzuki discontinued the car sales in the U.S. they decided to support online parts suppliers for which there are many of them to choose from. Before, back when Suzuki was selling cars in the U.S. the primary way to get replacement parts was to go in to a local dealership and buy the parts there and/or have them order the part for you. Many of the dealers did not stock a lot of extra parts so many times it meant you had to wait for the part to arrive at the dealership after they ordered the part of you. In addition to this it also meant that in most cases you were stuck having to pay full retail price for those parts. To make that experience even less pleasant, most Suzuki parts counters at the dealerships were not just Suzuki dealers but also dealers for several other car brands which means that typically when you would go to the parts counter to order some parts you would end up waiting in line behind other people trying to order parts for a whole host of other car brands that the particular dealership also sold, and most of the time you were talking about at least a half an hour wait before you actually got to the counter to speak with the parts person. I really dreaded that whole method of getting OEM parts. Once Suzuki switched to primarily online ordering, the online suppliers were/are generally much better at having popular parts in stock. The thing to be aware of though nearly all repair shops are completely ignorant of what I just mentioned about parts still being available and I've had many tell me that they can't get parts, after which I give them a list of Suzuki parts suppliers and they do a double take because they had no idea LOL. For a body shop that swore up and down that certain body panels that I needed replaced were not available, I had to order the part myself which I got in a few days then take it to the body shop so they could do the work and the shop owner was in disbelief that I was able to order the body part he said was not available. You just gotta know the sources. Here are some so you can see for yourself. 1) www.suzukicarparts.com/ 2) suzukisubaruparts.worldoemparts.com/v-suzuki 3) www.xportautoparts.com/v-2008-suzuki-sx4--base--2-0l-l4-gas 4) www.suzukidepot.com/ 5) www.foggsauto.com/parts/ Those are just a few for OEM parts but in addition to those you can also get suitable aftermarket parts for Suzuki vehicles such as the SX4 from places like the following: 1) www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/suzuki,2008,sx4,2.0l+l4,1441792 2) www.carparts.com/vehicle/2008/Suzuki/SX4/Base/4_Cyl_2-dot-0L . There is also Ebay and Amazon for miscellaneous Suzuki parts, some are going to be aftermarket parts but there are actually even OEM Suzuki parts regularly listed on Ebay by local distributors of Suzuki parts and also by international Suzuki parts dealers. I've personally purchased OEM Suzuki parts off Ebay of which some of them came from Suzuki dealers in Russia, some from Suzuki dealers in Hungary and Lithuania, and in each case, even with shipping it actually ended up being cheaper than that same part from a U.S. supplier so it would be a mistake to assume that getting an OEM Suzuki part from overseas is more expensive due to shipping because that's not always the case. In the case of Ebay you can also find many good used Suzuki parts on there that are being listed by salvage yards and many of them offer guarantees on the used parts. Lastly what I would mention when it comes to purchasing parts is that it is really helpful and makes things easier if you have the actual part # of the item that you need because Suzuki uses many of the same parts across their entire line-up but most websites fail to take that in to consideration. For example the Suzuki Grand Vitara uses many of the same parts as the SX4, even had the same J20A engine, but yet if you look for that particular part for the SX4 a supplier might say "out of stock" or "discontinued" but then if you instead search using the exact part # you will see it's actually in-stock and still available but listed as a Grand Vitara part even though it's the exact same part that is used on the SX4. Many of the smaller parts on Suzuki's were also used by General Motors on Chevrolet vehicles and because of that are also interchangeable but again, not even parts counter people seem to be aware of this but I have found parts that for other people, for example the evaporative canister unit which supposedly no longer existed and was not available anywhere... but using the part number I found out it was the exact same unit used in the Chevrolet Tracker. Called my local automotive supply shop 4 blocks away (the same one that told me that canister is not available and no one has it) and they actually had one in stock but listed for the Chevy Tracker, not the Suzuki model. So I took the person I was helping locate parts to the automotive supply store, we picked up the part, I installed it, worked exactly like it should and was an exact match as well but again, if you were to just rely on what auto parts counter people tell you or even auto-repair shops, or misinformed owners of the brand you might come away as misinformed as they are.

The SX4 didn't need more cargo space. We have a 2008. We've done road trips in it. Even with a toddler in a carseat and my MIL along, we had space. We each take a carry-on roller suitcase and a backpack. If you want to take more stuff along, install a rooftop box/bag and/or a hitchrack. I recommend just not taking the kitchen sink along. We have a Subie Crosstrek now too. It gets better MPG...40+ if you set the cruise near the speed limit. People make a big deal out of little CUVs like this now, but Suzuki's SX4 was already pretty good over a decade ago...tilt column, Navi, BT, EBD, TCS, ABS, roofrails, 4WD/AWD, fogs, and sporty handling were all available for well under $20K USD with the SX4.

In my opinion you should keep it in AWD. Yes, you'll burn a bit more gas. It takes off using all 4 wheels and then once you're up to speed it only uses the front wheels. However, in situations where you have to make an emergency maneuver you'll be thankful it's turned on. The only way I can describe it is that it feels like the car takes over. I drive a lot of miles and I've been in many situations where if I was driving a FWD vehicle, I'm pretty sure I would have either run off the road or wound up in a collision. It's an impressive little car. Especially for the money.

@@danherrick5785 In most cases both. However, in really, really soft soil/mud, probably only the Suzuki. I've taken mine into muddy construction sites where the contractor told me he was shocked I drove my SX4. He told me in addition to owning his 4x4 Ford Pickup he had a Subaru Outback. Apparently he's gotten it stuck in places similar to where I was driving. From what I read the Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system is primarily designed to provide greater handling and traction for on road driving. The Suzuki i-AWD is designed to provide an all around experience. Being most Suzuki autos are sold in countries with less than desirable road systems, their main customer base needs a very flexible driving experience. Whereas the Subaru customer base is looking for an optimal highway driving experience with great weather handling. The VW 4Motion and the Audi Quatro is tuned simarly to the Subaru for the same reason. At the end of the day, the Subaru on highway experience is probably better than the Suzuki. However, you just can't beat the versatility of the Suzuki. Especially for how little money used Suzuki vehicles cost.

As far as maintenance I think what you are referring to is the warranty which was 7 year, 100,000 mile for the drivetrain so for 2013 models that was in effect all the way through 2021. Most repairs are fairly easy on the vehicle although it helps if you have skinny hands for some tasks like belt/chain, water pump, etc. Aside from warranty work, any qualified automotive repair shop can service the Suzuki's.

Rather get a Rav4 AWD or CRV AWD, cars that will still be easy to get parts for.

You name the part and it is available somewhere online. Not hard to find parts at all. CRV's are so boring and everyone has one.

The seats don't just fold down they fold back up into the front seats (like a van) creating the biggest space ever if you don't need a back seat hahah
