Rear control arms are the likely source of popping and clicking noise commonly reported by some RAM owners. Here's a few easy things to check for this problem.

I thought everybody in LA owned a Catahoula! :-) What I love about your videos (and MotorCity Mechanic too) is that you provide hard-to-find info like torque values. It's also considerate when videos provide socket/wrench sizes. I thank you for that. God bless!

Marion I heard a squeaking noise on our 2018. Checked the control arm bolts all good. Discovered the rear brake lines were the culprits. They rub in the metal bracket as designed but made a high pitched sound. A little silicon spray AMD all is good.

They are called flag nuts. The arm holds against the structure allowing you to torque it without the use of a backup wrench. They are mostly used for areas where access to the nut for torque is not available. You will see they use them all over the front suspension for obvious reasons.
@MarionBlair
@MarionBlair 6 жыл бұрын
Excellent, thank you! That's what I ended up using it for. Made it so easy just dealing with one wrench when you are by yourself laying on your back and trying to put that kind of torque on a bolt. Thanks for confirming this.

@curtisbull1583 6 жыл бұрын
Since the side with the shock is harder to get to why not take the bolt clear out and turn it around so the nut is on the side that's difficult to get to, by the shock?

That bolt with the arm on it is there for a reason. its used so you don't need to put a wrench on both sides. The arm allows it to stop against the frame so you can get a good tighten on them.

That flange is supposed to keep that bolt from coming loose but it works best if you tighten it down to where that flange is sitting right up against the metal that it would have to reverse towards and it’s always a good idea to put some locktite just in case

The tab is there to help prevent the bolt from backing out. If not positioned correctly it doesn’t do a thing and will back out. The tab has to be against the frame in the direction that doesn’t let it back out but it’ll still back out because it’s a pos design!! I’ve replaced my entire front end and rear end and brakes and still have that infernal clunk when I first back up and brake or when I first take off and brake. Drives me crazy!!! 🤯🤯🤬🤬

Really like the videos Marion! I just had a few questions. First I just wanted to say I’m a happy new owner of a 2018 Laramie 6.7l Cummins Megacab! I love this truck. However I bought it and only had 27 miles on it and all was great! Owned it since last Wednesday. Over the past few days I’ve noticed a noise too sounds like coming from the rear. It’s a clunking sound, happens especially in slower moving traffic when I push the gas pedal then let off then have to push pedal again it almost feels like the rear end is buckling. It also does it at higher speeds sometimes too. Trans shifting feels solid drive shaft and u joints seem ok. Was wondering how you heard yours and your experience. Sounds like some of the rear end suspension components might be loose from the factory. It’s a new truck, I know yours happened further down the road though. Am I nuts here is this maybe part of the break in phase of the truck? Ive had other trucks in the past but never this issue other than up at speed climbing hills some unjoints had failed. What do you thing. Shifting in and out of park and into reverse are very smooth too. Love your truck by the way and like everyone else thanks for your info and great videos. My name is Joseph Dettmer, I’m in northern va.
@MarionBlair
@MarionBlair 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joseph, I wouldn't think anything is loose although it's possible. I would lean more towards the transmission is stilling learning the shift points and driving conditions etc., You can read about this in your manual. Also, the weight of these truck are 2 to 3 times that of a car so it's going to be jerky at quickly reversing from no acceleration to power on. I catch myself doing that from time to time in heavy traffic. It's also a learning curve for the driver also. I try to be as smooth on the peddle as possible. If it's unsatisfactory after a while, take it to the dealer and they can flash the PCM which may help shifting. You may need an update. The transmission stays in a fairly high gear all the way down to nearly an idle so when you change from peddle off to peddle on quickly it could be in 3rd gear and when power is apply quickly after coasting, it has to downshift and that can also cause some jerky response. Give it a couple of weeks and if you still feel it's excessive take it to the dealer and let them check it. I suspect it's normal as I've heard this is very common complaint. Thanks again for the kind words, good luck with the new truck it's a beauty. I was looking at them the other day.

Thanks for the response Marion! After seeing your response and seeing what the dealer has said. The truck is so new I have not even had a chance to go through the manual, very good idea actually. I’ll just let itbreak itself in and we’ll see how it goes. So far I’m loving this s truck and my wife and kids also. Looking forward to more videos! Thanks again.

Marion, how's the ride? Much better than traditional leafs? When buying another truck would you absolutely go with the 4 link? Did the rear end have a defect from the factory to have to be replaced at 6k? Was this a recall or something?

I have a 2018 Ram 2500 with 3000 miles and just developed a squeak on the rear passenger when the suspension flexes. From what I could find on Google I'm thinking it might be the parking cable going through the rear control arm. Any advice or thoughts on this?

@MarionBlair
@MarionBlair 6 жыл бұрын
There's a procedure in which the transmission relearns the way it shifts. It'll do it automatically if driven for a while but the dealer should know. Try this: LEARN A SMOOTH MANUAL 2-1 PULLDOWN SHIFT AS WELL AS A NEUTRAL TO REVERSE SHIFT NOTE: The transmission oil temperature must be above 110°F (43°C). Use the following steps to have the TCM learn the LR volume. 1.With the vehicle speed around 40-48 km/h (25-30 MPH) in Manual 2nd, perform manual pulldowns to Low or 1st gear at closed throttle. 2.Repeat Step #1 until the LR CVI becomes stable and the manual 2-1 becomes smooth

My 2000 dodge ram 2500 is making a popping sound when turning either way at any speed in the front end. Did you take the bushing out to look at it was there a sleeve inside that the bolt goes through??? Damn good video if I do say so myself, Thank you. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated Thanks again.
@MarionBlair
@MarionBlair 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's a bushing (sleeve) with rubber on the outside. It needs to be torqued while the truck has weight on the wheels, not on a frame lift with the wheels hanging free as it will damage the rubber.
