I Review a 2021 RAM 3500 High Output Cummins Turbo Diesel engine and explain the mechanical differences between the standard output and the high output Cummins engine. The 6.7 HO Cummins is posting 420 hp and an industry leading 1075 lb-ft or torque giving you the most powerful pickup truck engine to date.
Check out my good friends at Back Roads Garage!
Insta - / backroads.garage
I hope everyone had a great weekend! my good friend Ryan at back roads garage let me gets my hands on his beautiful 2021 RAM 3500 with the High Output 6.7 Cummins. I figured it would be a cool video just talking about why and how the HO Cummins is more powerful then the standard output.
So the fourth gen RAM HD trucks had a variety of power outputs coming from the 6.7 Cummins. most notably was the manual transmission option leaving you with ONLY 660 lb-ft of torque vs a truck with the Aisin transmission could reach up to 930 lb-ft of torque. so even in the last generation of ram truck there were variations in power outputs.
in 2019 Cummins beefed up the 6.7 platform to be able to handle over 1000 lb-ft of torque. they strengthen the block, made the mean bearing caps stronger, main bearing cap bolts are thicker. the crankshaft is stronger, connecting rods are stronger. piston wrist pins are thicker and stronger. so this engine got some pretty major upgrades.
2 things that I don't like about the upgrades in 2019 are hydraulic lifters. I think those are weaker and more prone to failure then solid lifters. and the introduction of the cp4 fuel pump. now in 2021 Cummins and RAM removed the cp4 fuel pump because of failures and I'm just shocked why they went with that in the first place.
So all of those upgrades are shared across both the Standard Output and the High Output.
the major differences between the two engines are compression ratios. so the high out engine has a lower compression ratio at 16.2 :1 then the SO at 19:1. This allows the HO to utilize the turbo much better and be able to handle more boost giving this engine more power. sounds counter intuitive but its true.
the pistons on the HO are most likely different to give it a different compression ratio. I would also imagine there is some sort of fueling difference weather the injectors are tuned differently or the fuel pump is I'm not sure.
lastly and probably most importantly is the ECM tune. this is where all the major happens for these engines. A more advanced tune for the HO engines most likely gives it the biggest difference when compared the the SO engine.
Anyways I hope you liked the video!

I use to work at the plant where the engines are made and the pistons are different as well as the heads. Many components are different between the standard and high output. Cranks camshafts as well as others. We always had to swap parts when we did different standards or high output. I also worked on the machining side for the block. The high output puts would have 1 freeze plug left out on the side and standards would have them all in place once they reached ready for assembly. CGI issues are that they have lots of porosity that’s hard to catch compared to original cast irons.

Considering the power levels of the mechanical 5.9L engines. And how pleased people were with the power. If a demonstration of the 4cyl B motor. With the VGT turbo and an 8-speed ZF medium duty transmission. Running the 3.42 for 33" tires, 3.73 for 35's. A 4.4L would be plenty of power! And most important with $7 or more a Gallon fuel prices. Extremely economical and practical!. We have a 2018 Ram 2500 4wd 3.42 ratio with the 6.7L standard output. That truck is a beast! We also have a 2016 Ram 1500 4wd 3.92 ratio with the 3L. But both trucks pull the same trailers rather nicely. The 3L gets 17mpg @ 55mph, whole the 6.7L gets 13mpg @ 55mph. Pulling the exact same trailer. Because of the ZF 8-speed, the 3L is the one to drive in snow and ice conditions. The 6.7L has just way to much power and throttle sensitivity with the taller axle ratio and only 6 speeds. If we could buy a Ram 3500 with the 4cyl Cummins B series, ZF 8-speed, 3.42 axle ratio. Highway fuel economy would be 36mpg at 62mph/100kph. And would still be a beast!

If you make your living with this new truck... get ready for a huge drop in profits since the fuel economy is horrible!! The best combination for HotShot would be a Commercial Chassis where you can get the standard output and the Aisin transmission but retain the better compression ratio. THEN just add the Banks Monster Ram and heater delete to gain more power & efficiency. Thanks for the video, I thought I would learn more but there is a lot of misinformation in your video. After having six different RAM 2500 trucks for my Marine Transport business since 2015 & logging almost 1,000,000 miles since... I bought a 2021 RAM MegaCab Limited HO Dually 4.10 truck and learned the hard way how poor the MPGs were with the HO compared to the SO of my previous 2500s. The funny thing about towing boats is that the MAX weight ratings are calculated by towing an actual WEIGHT on a Flatbed trailer for testing, tuning and safety control by the Manufacturer. What they do not do is actually haul something like a large boat weighing 15,000# which falls far under the realm of the 30K+ max weight but what it does do is have very irregular airflow versus say a weight on a flatbed gooseneck. This lack of insight in tuning plays a role where the engine can demand more DEF to compensate for say, huge Headwinds when towing West across Wyoming towards Washington, than the tuning was ever programmed for... so then you get "DEF System See Dealer" messages and a limp mode to render your truck useless. Of course, the "Plug N Play" Techs are just as useless since they are not allowed to test your truck hauling a load, and when operating said truck at normal loads, never hits the window of operation so they could see what is actually happening... you get a reset and "Nothing Is Wrong Here" from the dealer and a bill for the service since it is not covered by warranty. SO... to shed some light on the real mechanical differences between the two trucks, SO & HO. It's the Pistons and tuning... nothing more. The Camshaft, Block, rods and crank are all the same. You might be surprised to know the turbo is the exact same part too... everything is done by tuning. What is truly different is the rear axle... so do not order the BANKS Diff cover for a 2021 Ram HO from anywhere other than SUMMIT Racing, as the earlier part numbers showed the wrong axle. The reason Summit has it right is because that is where I ordered it from, and they have now had a PowWow with BANKS to get the right part numbers in their system. Can an HO truck be made to achieve the fuel economy of the SO trucks...? YES!!! It Can, but be ready to break out the wallet for some serious cash. Just note, by this time... you are now going to spend an additional $3500-5500 on TOP of what it cost you to upgrade to the HO from an SO... JUST TO GET THE AISIN Transmission. For less money, you could do an ATS Allison Swap and still get 20+mpg!!! The BANKS MonsterRam is worth 2-3mpg across the board when installed with the heater grid delete. Add in the Ram Air box Banks calls a "Super Scoop" and the hard pipes to see 19-21mpg unladen and 10.5-12mpg while towing anything over 12K#. I have documented this and yes, saved some fuel along the way. Just doing the #JennyCraigMod is not enough. I have much of these changes shared on my channel as well as the subtle differences like how the EGR is affixed to the exhaust manifold on the newer HO trucks. Keep up the great videos!!

I believe the transfer case is also larger in the HO models. I thought Firepunk discovered the injectors in the HO were different than the SO. I could be wrong there. @TheGettyAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Appreciate the comment! So maybe it was the way I described it but yes the block, crank and rods are the same for the HO and the SO. I was just pointing out that in 2019 for the fifth gen those items were upgraded from the last "generation" of Cummins. But I see how that could be misunderstood. I just thought it would be cool to mention the upgrades from the 4th gen Cummins. I think later in the video I point out the only real differences between the SO and HO are the pistons and the ECM tuning. I speculated there was maybe some fueling differences but I wasn't 100% sure. just a gut feeling. It's funny you mentioned the diff being different because I thought my power wagon with the 4.10 gears had a nice sized diff. and then I saw that diff and I was wow that's ALOT bigger.

Had I done so, I would have stuck with the 2500 or if going the 3500 route, kept the 68RFE as it has been a reliable transmission in my experience but it is at least upgradable with tuning unlike the Aisin. That's the real issue with these trucks is the Aisin is a shit-show for shifting as it wants no matter what you need at that time. The Dealer tells me they sent a sample of my DEF for testing and now it is out of Specs. I honestly just don't have that much experience with deleting emissions. But It would be a good topic to cover. I might try and do some research and see what I come up with. the sad truth is these diesel engines would run so much better with a delete.
@DavidWilks
@DavidWilks 2 жыл бұрын
I deleted my 2021 Ram 3500 because the factory tuning does not take into any consideration the induced drag by boats and other larger towed vehicles. YES, 5th-Wheel Campers are large but they are simply more aerodynamic than a boat with a t-top acting like a parachute. Many tuners are specific DELETE DEVICES and as such by the DOT/EPA Regulations are illegal to have on your truck. The EZlink system is a "Fleet Tracking Device" first that has been utilized by some very smart people to "backdoor" the ECU for tuning capabilities. This way if you are stopped and it is on your truck, the issue then only becomes one of missing components. Now, you can run this device with everything installed... but why? I will say, deleting alone did not make up for the lack of MPGs due to the lower compression, but it did save money from not buying DEF every day while hauling.
