A very balanced and crystal clear analysis of Patriotism and Jingoism, which all of us Indians need to know if we really want to be true humanitarians which actually is the true essence of Hinduism. Thanks

BJP claims that Congress appeases the minorities- I have one question- Doesn't the BJP appease the majority? Isn't that appeasement too? Polarized appeasement would be a better word.

Superbly explained the state of affairs in India-very disturbing and alarming. This bjp rule is most destructive to our Nation, they must be exposed sweepingly as done by Mr Guha.

Well noted by Rahul Shivshankar: Author and historian Ram Guha is foraging for research material in the putrid trough of offensive imperial British generalizations on Indians, in this case, Gujaratis. Guha, no stranger to controversy, tweeted thus: “Gujarat, though economically advanced, is culturally a backward province… Bengal, in contrast, is economically backward but culturally advanced.” These sentiments, he says, were expressed by a Raj-era Briton, Philip Spratt, in a 1939 book he authored, ironically, on one of the greatest Gujaratis, Mahatma Gandhi. Though Ram Guha has failed to elaborate on the motives behind tweeting the quote, it is dismaying that he found it, as he blithely concedes, so utterly ‘’arresting’’. Before we examine the inadequacies of the quote itself, it’s worth a quick reflection on what might have prompted Phillip Spratt to make such a comment. Till the early 1930s, Spratt was an avowed communist. In 1929 he was jailed by the British in the Meerut Conspiracy case for sedition. Being an early founder of the Communist movement in India, Spratt may have been contemptuous of Gujaratis’ adroitness at the capitalist enterprise. The pursuit of lucre for many communist-socialists was an immoral activity, ranking low on the totem pole of civilized conduct and thereby worthy of his contempt. Ironically, Spratt went on to disavow communism entirely during his time in jail. The paradox is compounded when one considers that Spratt described Gujarat as a ‘’culturally backward province’’ even though, as the author of Gandhi’s early life, he would have been well acquainted with the great freedom fighter’s integral humanism and pacifism - attributes that typify a culturally evolved people. Whatever Spratt’s motives, is it possible that Ram Guha has cherry-picked this quote without context to subliminally tie Gujarat’s purported ‘’cultural backwardness’’ to Prime Minister Narendra Modi? Incidentally, ‘‘cultural backwardness’’ was a term used by Soviet ethnographers to describe certain conquered “primitive sub-nationalities” that had to be “re-educated and civilised”. Is Guha then trying to suggest that the Gujarati in Modi places him at odds with “acceptable” modern mores? If so, does Guha think Mr Modi’s alleged cultural primitivism, or to put it bluntly - his supposed lack of sophistication, has a bearing on his decision making or suitability for office? By hiding behind the purported sentiments of Phillip Spratt to condemn all Gujaratis, Guha displays a troubling and deep-seated elitist contempt for a section of his fellow Indians, which chimes with colonialists, like Macaulay, Risely and Churchill. These patricians were given to haughtily drawing lazy and racist caricatures of Indians they were supposedly civilising. Sample this odious comment from Macaulay to justify the enslavement of Bengal. “Whatever the Bengalee does, he does languidly… singularly pernicious in the war of chicane, he seldom… enlists as a soldier. We doubt whether there be a hundred genuine Bengalees in the whole army of the East India Company. There never, perhaps, existed a people so thoroughly fitted by nature and by habit to a foreign yoke.’’ Of course, this observation of Bengalis is just as ridiculous as Spratt’s views on Gujaratis and Churchill’s “coolie” slur on all Indians. At the time Spratt was holding forth on Gujarat it had already been the birthplace of socialist reformer Dayananda Saraswati; Sardar Patel, the architect of a pluralistic India; peace activist Morarji Desai; Homi Jehangir Bhabha, the creator of the renowned cultural hybridity theory; Homi Vyarawalla, the poster girl of female emancipation; and Jhaverchand Meghani, christened “national poet” by the Mahatma himself. There are some who believe that Guha is trying to assail the idea of a united India by picking at some imaginary faultline to pit Bengal against Gujarat. If this is true then Guha would do well to focus on a bit of history that is emblematic of the Bengal-Gujarat connect. Sri Aurobindo, one of India’s greatest philosophers, was from Bengal, but his most famous student KM Munshi was from Gujarat. Sri Aurobindo’s foremost biographer, Ambulai Purani, was also from Gujarat. Chunibhai Patel, the founder of Aurobindo Ashram, was from Anand in Gujarat. And, of course, Sri Aurobindo’s most ardent disciple was the Gujarati poet Sundaram. In the final analysis, even if Guha’s end motive was to mock Modi’s “Gujarati Asmita” card, then the embittered historian has only succeeded in galvanising public opinion in the Prime Minister’s favour. Even his ideological opponent and Gandhi family advisor, Ahmed Patel, has fittingly snubbed Guha with this: “From Kutch to Vapi and from Shyamlaji to Dwarka, Gujarat’s culture is built on striking diversity but united through indomitable entrepreneurial spirit. Every culture has its unique greatness, backwardness is our failure to understand this fact.”

I agreed on lot of points with Guha but I think he gave a very very shallow explanation about why fundamentalism is rising. He avoided and even distorted facts to suit his own perceptions. First, Hindu fundamentalism is rising NOT because of Muslim fundamentalism but because certain ideology within Hinduism. RSS existed LONG before Islamic terrorism. Second , Mahatma gandhi NEVER tried to abolish caste system and in fact he strongly supported caste system. He merely tried to abolish 'untouchablity' ..people often confuse the two. ALL he meant was I can touch a bhangi but the person STILL will remain a bhangi. Gandhi even wrote a book saying HOW a low caste shudra should do his cleaning jobs perfectly. He was a fundamentalist Hindu. Third , IT IS BECAUSE OF THIS LIE that our politicians of British era were secular we are suffering . Because Indian Hindu politicians were never secular. Congress was dominated by upper caste and still is. Gandhi ALWAYS tried to play safe by appeasing everyone but he remained a casteist. It is because of this we are unable to abolish fundamentalist Hinduism. Fourth. how come a party that is in power in two SMALL states can be responsible for whole India ? It makes no sense !! CPM today is weak..Where whole India people vote for two casteist Brahmin Baniya controlled party like Congress and BJP , why the blame should be on left ? Its laughable !! The real reason is WE Indian Hindus LOVE to vote for a fundamentalist party. WE remained fundamentalist and today with money and power we are showing our true colour.

I grew up at a time when there was no particular person to whom i would have voted for. The congress did not have a Gandhi until Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi came in much later. It is hard to relate to these 2 as they are much the privileged people of India and if u want to truly be an Indian, u definitely need to go through the terrible hardships that each of us go through every single day of our lives. None of these people in any party have seen this. Trusting the fate of the nation in one person’s hand in my opinion is simply suicidal. And i think we have already been set on that path. We will still re-emerge from this extended suicidal episode as Indians. Thats the feature of our indian region.

Since I see a lot of comments about different states as to their nature, I have observed that Gujaratis as the most nationalistic in their outlook and proud of their religion and the nation. Interestingly, they least like Gandhi and think he sold out hindus.

Was M K Gandhi Patriotic From a FB post. Any idea why MKG wanted our soldiers to fight for the British? Was there a quid pro quo? Is he not a hypocrite? This day - the 27th of April in 1918, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi agreed to attend a War Conference in Delhi requested by Chelmsford, the then British Viceroy of India. Gandhi was a mass leader and Chelmsford was pretty sure that only Gandhi could urge Indians to participate in the World War I on behalf of British. MK Gandhi delivered a speech after attending the War Conference, urging Indians to help the British as soldiers in the war. Gandhi moved from place to place asking Indians and offering himself to participate in the war too. That Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi preached Ahimsa is a myth. He only misused it to his advantage, forcing it to only Hindus when the fight against British gained momentum. Where was his Ahimsa during World War I? Do you know MK Gandhi even wrote a letter to British Viceroy Chelmsford after he attended the War Conference and agreed to help British recruit Indians for them (preacher of Ahimsa sending his own countrymen to death zones on behalf of British). To quote Gandhi's exact words from his letter, extracted from the book 'The Patient Assassin' by Anita Anand: “I have an idea that, if I became your RECRUITING AGENT-IN-CHIEF, I might RAIN MEN on you.” Well the British did not invite Bal Gangadhar Tilak, also a mass leader then, as they believed on his patriotism and his refusal. Many freedom fighters were taken by surprise at Gandhi’s U-turn. How could he support the British and how could he agree to the British of sending Indians to death fields, the war zones? They also questioned how a votary of Ahimsa could agree to ‘Hinsa’. But Gandhi’s mass leadership bore fruits! His request was accepted! Had he then requested them to fight against the British, History would have been different! Over a million Indians agreed to be recruited to fight on behalf of British in World War I following Gandhi's request. Over one million Indians who joined British were sent overseas to participate in War. In this war, at least 74,187 Indian soldiers died and over 67,000 were wounded. All thanks to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi! I pity myself to have read a whole book on MK Gandhi and on his Ahimsa in school and the myth on how he and his Ahimsa got us freedom. It is high time that truth be told and our history textbooks rewritten! - Manoshi Sinha.

The special features of Indian Nationalism who Ram Guha quoted doesn't seem to be special. Israel let go what wrong German did with them. Middle east let go their colonial powers. Even pak let go Britishers. Africans let go France. Only to found enemies with which jingoism and war market can be built. All these countries instead of asking justice from what it has been done with. Instead started hatred against their neighbours. Except the NATO members. The uniqueness was only because sanghis were not promoted after they killed Gandhi. But Now, they have gain control turning institutions and it's core supporters to racist/facist mindset.
