As Ramadan approaches us, we thought, it would be good to narrate some of the great battles that commenced during Ramadan. One battle stood out and secured the Muslim control of Baytul Maqdis also known as Jerusalem. This is the Battle of Hattin which began in Ramadan on the day after Laylatul Qadr. In Gregorian times, it took place on July 4th 1187 CE.Before explaining how the battle commenced, we must understand the context or background to the battle. Around 1099 CE, the Crusaders retook Jerusalem in their “Holy War” to restore Christianity in the most important city in the Levant. The Muslims were humiliated in defeat and no matter how much the Muslims wanted to retake Jerusalem, they could not. The year 1099 CE, was a turning point for the Muslims. From superpowers, they had been reduced to merely rulers, especially after the assassinations of the Seljuq sultan Malik Shah and his vizier, Nizamul Mulk of Baghdad. The Fatimid Caliphate and Seljuq Sultanate were always at war with each other, severely causing disunity within the Muslim Ummah. In addition to all this chaos, the Ulama’ of that time were also very separated, as most would ignore the division of the Ummah whilst others took responsibility to reignite the spirit of war and unity, such as the Grand Judge of Damascus, Zaid Al Din Al Haraawi, who said to the Abbasid caliph, Al Mustazhir, “How dare you slumber in the shade of complacent safety, leading lives as frivolous garden flowers, while your brothers in Syria have no dwelling place save the saddles and the bellies of Vultures. Blood has been spilled! Shall the valorous Arabs resign themselves to insult, and the valiant Persians accept dishonour.” This was the severity of the situation. The Muslims needed unification and brotherhood, which was sought by many Muslim commanders such as Nuruddin Zengi and of course, the famous Salah Al Din Al Ayyubi, who is known to have been successful in this matter. The Muslims would have to defeat the three major Crusader states which were the county of Tripoli, the principality of Antioch and the Kingdom of Jerusalem. It was time for the termination of discord and fitnah, and the implementation of union and amity. They soon found Salah Al Din and his army, who without hesitation attacked the Crusaders. The Crusaders were already in a dire situation so were easily driven back against the two horns of Hattin by the Muslims. The Muslims destroyed the Christians but Salah Al Din spared the lives of the king of Jerusalem, King Guy but killed Reginald, who was the prince of Antioch due to his insolence and wickedness. Now, Salah Al Din had his eyes fixed upon the holy city of Jerusalem. But that’s a story for another time.
