I always loved this song when my dads group played it. I heard it in The Exorcist and i thought "That's perfect. That's the song i want to set the tone of all my movies." Like American Girl having that moment of levity in Silence of the Lambs.

I had the wonderful pleasure of seeing the Almond Brothers band back in 1978 when I was 15 years old at the Fabulous Forum they played for more than three hours I remember Cher even came out and joined towards the end of the show!

My brother ran in the same circles as them. He was pretty good friends with Butch Trucks. My brother is 15 years older than I am and I’m 60 and he knew them back in 69. He knew them all including Duane.

Growing up in Georgia and seeing the Allman Bros for the first time in 1969, following their careers and playing many of their jam songs in my own little bands...I totally agree with you. My son, a fine guitarist, cut his teeth on the band, he teaches Music Production in HIgh School and makes it a point to introduce his students to the Brothers so we are doing our part!!

I'm with you brother. Growing up in the 60s and 70s I was listening to Zeppelin, Grand Funk Railroad and Black Sabbath. Once I heard ABB I was hooked for life. Elizabeth Reed, Les Brers In A Minor (I was playing bass at the time, Loved Barry Oakley), One way out, Trouble no more. Hell anything from their first few albums were garage band favorites. To be honest I never learned Ramblin Man or Midnight Rider . Don't really know why. Thanks for showing me the error of my ways.

I have seen them 30 plus times and love them in every iteration. They played and wrote well from the 60s thru the 2000s (40 plus years of being at the top of their game. Any metal musician worth a damn would love them as every good guitar player digs the Allmans

I‘m 23 and discovered the allman brothers this year. Gotta say they have become my favorite band, love them even more Zeppelin and Black Sabbath now. I’m just a sucker for the blues I suppose. I learned blue sky, one way out, come and go blues and bougainvillea from Dickey Betts solo album, and made a huge step forward in my improvisation. Especially the major scale solos are just sublime. Soon I’ll focus on slide, but need a new guitar for that 😁

Blue Sky is one the most beautiful songs and one of my favorites to play. Learning that solo taught me everything I know about major pentatonic and a lot about harmonized double leads. Your wife and son together just can’t be wrong! Allman Brothers were an incredible force and an absolutely amazing band.

Excellent Video. Mr. Betts was my favourite guitar player growing up. I was lucky enough to see the Allman Brothers several times when they came up here to Toronto. Jamming with my high school buddies and my brother tomorrow night, and I want to play One Way Out and You Don't Love Me and Whipping Post.... and Rambling man. Thanks Kelly.

Great lesson! Thanks for posting. I also appreciated the commentary at the beginning, especially the part about the ABB not getting their due from the “classic rock” community. I did have a slightly different perspective to offer though. It’s not really accurate to say that the ABB never really had a resurgence. The post 89 Allman Bros were one of the top selling live bands of the Pollstar era and had several well received albums. Their set lists had old classics for sure, but were also heavily populated by songs from the post 89 period. They are, or were, popular with a younger crowd, but it was more with the jamband crowd, not necessarily the classic rock crowd. Their successor bands like Tedeschi Trucks Band and Govt Mule have done a great job of keeping their legacy alive.

I was watching Sammy Davis, Jr. years ago on the Johnny Carson show and Johnny asked Sammy. What kind of music did he like and Sammy said he liked all kinds of music as long as it's good music. And that's been my Mantra ever since. Thanks for the video I just found your KZfaq channel and. Don't stop.

Awesome! Best quote I think I ever read was by Duane on Jaimoe. I’ll paraphrase of course but when asked how they found Jaimoe, Duane said… Man there was this cat down in Mississippi that played so weird… we didn’t know if he was any good or not! Love it.

Hey Kelly...you missed the mark on one point here (very rare indeed!). But the fact is, the ABB were extremely popular with the younger "jam band" crowd throughout the 90's and 2000's. With Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge and Warren Haynes in the band, they were a force...and very popular, selling out the Beacon Theater many nights in a row up until about 2014. 👍

Kelly, thanks for this wonderful lesson. I will say though, that the lead, with the exception of that tasty blues note is indeed in the G maj scale pattern, if you use the G form of the G maj scale which occupies about the same fret span of the Emin pentatonic.

Yes, I know that, but my point is that teenagers who DO find classic rock and the like, and gravitate towards it (my own daughter did this at 13), they are listening to band's like Zeppelin, Queen, Guns and roses, black Sabbath so on and so forth, but NOT the Allman Brothers.

I think both Duane and Dickey were session players before they formed the Band. Both were well-versed in Jazz and Blues. That's what (I think) makes their music sound so damned good. It's always got a really nice flow......

Duane was a session player, Dickey was not. Duane was more blues and R&B based with little exposure to jazz until the ABB formed. The jazz influence came from Jaimo and Dickey.
