That is so very true do to the fact no one's hands will grip it the same as the same goes with scopes that I've tried to explain for years cause no one focuses the same through a scope. All factors plays a part in the mechanicals of the equipment

A point I would like to make: Tuning arrows to your bow is likely the most efficient way to do it, however, it is not the most cost-efficient. When I started down the heavy arrow rabbit hole, I could afford one build, so I built the heaviest arrow I could afford to build and shot it (670 grains, 20%foc). They didn't fly perfect at first, but I tuned my bow to them and now they fly better than any arrow I have ever shot and I have been thrilled with my results. My first time sighting them in after tuning, I robin hooded at 40 yards, and have gotten complete pass-throughs on all but one deer I shot with them. That one was buried directly in the center of the spine. I could see how, theoretically, building an arrow to your bow may grant you some slight performance increase, but I can't imagine that it would be a tremendous difference. Perhaps a certain test lab could gather and analyze some scientific data on the performance differences (if any) between tuning an arrow to your bow and tuning your bow to an arrow? ;)

If you come from a traditional bow hunting background, tuning an arrow makes the most sense. I never really have a cut this arrow to x length because I use a single piece hybrid longbow that can't be changed so I have to change the arrow. Currently I have a Gt traditional 400 spine 28" .204 diameter shaft with 225 grain point and 75 grains stainless steel insert with a collar and a lighted nock on the back end 671 grains total weight 22.8 % foc, going 155 to 159 fps and I'm confident it will blow through a deer or an elk with no problem. Now I just have to do my part.

I buried a cutthroat single bevel so deep in the ground after passing through an 8pt's shoulder at 33 yds that all my rage shooting friends had nightmares for the rest of deer season. I'm a believer!

I wish I'd have had this guy around 10 years ago (or anyone with this mindset) when I tried Trad. I never could get an arrow to tune properly. No one around understood arrow tuning and I didn't have the smarts to read enough about it, so I gave up as fast as I started. Fast forward 10 years, I find this smartass, loudmouth, semi-irritating Fairy guy on the Tube and I hear test kits... WTF is a test kit? Everyone knows to just pick an arrow and tune your bow to it. Then I started listening between all the laughing, wise cracks and name calling and Ding Ding Ding, the lightbulb goes off. He confirmed something I realized years ago when I switched back to aluminum arrows, heavy penetrates better and mechanicals suck when they hit bone. Now the FOC thing is planted firmly in my head and I'll be making a switch for the '23 season. Not only am I going to change my compound arrows, but I just finally got the Trad equipment dialed in. It's nice to finally realize I don't have to be a bowyer to make a truly wicked arrow that should kill nearly every time. Hell, with some of the knowledge I've gained, I might even try taking a deer with my 35# longbow.

The bow does the same thing every time it’s released. All arrows aren’t the same. So each one should be tuned. You don’t do the same thing every time you shoot. Great stuff, Ashby did it all for us, love the vids and the logic,my 6 to700g setups fly wonderfully between 240 and 220 fps....with perfect bullet holes at 21'. Simple law of physics…energy cannot be created or destroyed…but it can be transferred. FOC is simply utilizing, to the greatest degree possible, the energy transferred into the arrow and it’s momentum, for the most optimal result.

Sir, your going to be mad at me because I not only liked, but also subscribed. I also used your system to fling a heavy foc arrow with a ser razor through a bucks front leg bone plate thingy at twenty yards with my near twenty year old Switchback. Keep preaching it till they get it. It’s weird, I never had penetration issues using xx75’s and thunderheads back in the day. So much ke I lost them to trees and roots after full pass throughs. This penetration mess started with carbon and flappers. I would love to see a penetration test between my chuck adams super slam with xx75’s and a thunderhead, vs, a new speed bow with fast twizlers, and any broadhead on the market. That chuck adams at 80# had some serious ke. Maybe not an endo on an elephant, but would do some serious van damage.

So it made sense to me to post it here since the topic relates to tanks. I listed the masses and speeds of the projectiles you were asking about. Three common projectiles for the Abrams tank in descending order of armor penetrating ability: 1) The stream of molten metal from the M380 HEAT round: ~1kg, 5100 m/s (Mach 15.1) Capable of penetrating advanced ablative tank armor 2) M829A3 Armor-Piercing Fin-Stabilized Discarding Sabot (APFSDS): 4.88kg, 1575 m/s (Mach 4.6) Capable of penetrating heavy tank armor 3) M908 Obstacle Reduction (HE-OR): 11.4kg, 1400 m/s (Mach 4.1) Capable of penetrating concrete and light tank armor [exact numbers may vary somewhat depending on the source] The thing with penetrating metal armor is that, unlike Rockwell Hardness, the toughness rating of the metal is not a fixed parameter, but it varies depending on the speed at which it is impacted. At higher speeds, the metal is more brittle and less ductile. Especially important is the speed of the projectile relative to the speed of sound in the material. The speed of sound in steel is about Mach 15, so the impact force a projectile above that speed cannot spread out sideways through the armor, leading to highly brittle effects. With impacts in bone, the main effect is the bone flexing inward rather than the impact force spreading out sideways. So, you don't get the same quite the same benefit from a faster arrow the way you get better armor piercing results with a faster projectile. The mechanism by which a blunt projectile defeats metal tank armor is just not the same physical mechanism by which a sharp arrow cuts through animal hide and bone. Heavy arrows are good for cutting through hide and bone, fast projectiles are good for breaking through metal tank armor.

Tell those guys guys shooting light arrows to talk to some of us trad shooters……there is no tuning the bow……only the arrow! I shoot a 65# Super Kodiak…660gr arrow with 300gr TuffHeads up front. It’s a killing machine

Sometimes you just have no other choice but to shim your cam to the left or right. I've had a few bows like that now. The biggest give away is if your arrow flight on a bare shaft doesn't really change no matter what you do.. more than likely you need a twist or a shim/ top hat somewhere.. if you turn your nocks and move your rest back and forth.. still nothing really changes.. find a shop. Once it's spitting the arrow pretty much straight. Then you can fine tune with different points and nock tuning. If your strings stretched or your timing is out a heavier arrow won't fix that. Not in my 25 yrs of archery. I personally for white tail love 450 to 500 grain heads but that's me. Would rather see more guys shooting 600+ than 400-.. Great video Troy. Ordered the fairy kit last week and hoping to get a fresh set of apollos tuned in for this season so I can ditch the FMJs (local shop swore up and down they are the best deer killing arrow) and while they got me 4 deer last year not a single arrow survived the hunt. Troy, thanks for all your help and guidance. I am done shooting the light stuff that worked great shooting foam targets, only to have the same set up total fail on live animals. Now my focus is on ethical hunting arrow first and hitting foam is a distance second, but still fun.

I have only been hunting for a few years now. Still trying to get my first bow kill, but thanks to you I have optimal setup for when it happens. You are never going to convince everyone. So, don't let them get to you.

I cannot stress enough about the importance of owning a bow press. Save your money and buy one because you will use it regularly. A bow with proper cam timing, cam lean, and having your arrow rest set to proper center shot is most important imo. You are making very good points when it comes to tuning your arrows. Keep up the good work informing people. They might not take your advise, but at least it engages there minds.

I've been folling Troy since 2020. I reached out to him about building arrows for deer hunting. After his incite, guidance and knowledge. I tuned in my bow based off of his recommendations. I shoot a 700 grain arrow, single bevel broadhead (grizzly stick) and in 2021, I shot a buck at 41 yards. I thought I missed, I heard the thunk, but he stood there. Put his head down to eat again as I loaded up another arrow. Before I could draw back again, the buck took off unstable, ran 20-25yards from my impact shot before crashing. I doubled lunged and the deer had no clue. Thing that blew my mind was the arrow was burried about half way in the ground. (Pass through). Broke ribs too. Any hunter could agree that an ethical kill like that is their ultimate goal. Excited to tell Troy and the story, he responded " That ways easier" 🤣😎. Trust what he's teaching you, absorb it, practice it, most of all learn from it.

This makes so much sense and is a huge relief! I shoot what I can afford and that is a hand me down 1970s jennings bow, so now I just need to find what it likes to shoot! Pretty squared up I believe(shoots cheapo aluminum pretty well) I really like the idea of these single bevels from watching you and the hunting public and I'm sold after watching warb split the humerus head off that big Boi! So I started off shooting archery a couple years ago with a crossbow I got a torn rotator cup and bicep tendonitis. It wasn't until recently I found out that I could shoot your traditional compound bow with no problem. I chose a bow that I liked and an arrow that works amazing with said bow. Now at the same time I like to shoot so I have a reloading press and I reload my own ammo I believe highly in finding what works with your equipment then trying to find equipment that works with the projectile. It's not only easier to do but it's also more cost-effective. Not trying to put the cart before the horse you know so everybody that tries to find the equipment that works with the projectile are just crazy. It doesn't work like that and you have to find what works with the equipment not what works with the projectile. The first deer I successfully harvest was 40 yards crossbow I knew I could make the shot took the shot. Shortly after this amazing massive buck walked up 60 yards my scope on my crossbow did not go that far but thankfully to the range that I went to I've actually practiced at 60 yards so I knew where the holdover was and I took the shot. So with that I harvested two deer that day one being my first deer one being my first buck I've had people scrutinize me for that not only for the length of the shot but for the size of the buck. I don't hold anything against anybody that has their own opinions but when you're trying to put the cart before the horse this coming from a fairly new archery Hunter you kind of got your priorities mixed up. Now for note that was an 11-point buck that barely fit in the bed of my truck. My friend who allowed me to hunt his property what's surprised and shortly after revoked permission, because the buck he got that year and the buck I harvested made his look like a doe. I don't hold it against him and I was more than appreciative for him introducing me to hunting in general. I have since taken multiple people out for their first hunt. One of my friends was successful on his birthday with his first buck I actually didn't get anything for about a month and had more pleasure seeing him succeed and harvest the animal then if I would have myself.

Over 60, Matthews no cam, 53lbs, 250 spine black eagle, 400 grain up front, total weight 690 grains. Yeah, the deer i shoot will be coming home with me.😁 Thank you Troy for all your help!!!!

FOC works for crossbows too. I shortened a crossbow bolt by 1 inch which greatly increases the spine on an arrow that is only 20 inches to begin with. It is then possible to shoot heavier points. I experimented with point weights from 150 up to 250 grains to increase my FOC and make heavier traditional broadheads fly straighter with greater accuracy and penetration. My FOC ranged from 13 to 19 percent. I was not looking for the heaviest arrow setup. I was looking for the arrow system that would FLY THE BEST. I achieved this by shooting arrows in pairs. One with a field point, and one with the same weight broadhead. The arrow pairs that hit the closes together, are the ones that are balanced for the best flight for your crossbow. Everything about each pair has to be the same. Same spine, same fletching, same length, same lighted nock, same weight point. For my particular set up, a 200 grain point, at 16 percent FOC won the competition. Total arrow weight is now 540 grains. There ya go...

I’ve been down this path and spent several hundred dollars on test arrows. I ended up with about a 535-536 grain arrow with 23.8% foc single bevel broadhead. The arrow hits hard and penetrates. I clipped a twig and shot an 8 point through the neck just over the spine. I looked for probably 8 hours finding a spot of blood here and there. He lived I had him on camera 75yards from where I shot him 2 weeks later. I shot a doe with my crossbow same distance with a expandable twizzler stick perfect ❤ shot and she went maybe 50 yards spraying blood out both sides. I will continue shooting the arrows I came up with for my bow because I know it’s the smart and absolute best path to fallow but shot placement is critical in making a good clean kill. I want to thank the Ranch 🧚‍♂️ for all the research he has put into arrows along with all the people that have helped him understand what makes an arrow penetrate the best

Had an old bow that worked just fine with this method once I got it square and down the middle. Bought wife a brand new PSE Drive NXT. First thing I did was square it and get down the middle. Was a nightmare. Down the middle looked like string would derail at full draw. down the middle at full draw look like string would derail at brace. Did some internet research and learned about limb orientation. Called PSE asked how the limbs should be oriented on the bow. They asked for deflection numbers, so pressed bow while they were on the phone. 194,193, 189 and 186. PSE said the bow would be very difficult to tune with the spread in deflection numbers. Not only that, this left hand bow had the limbs oriented for right hand. PSE explained orientation took my address sent (free) 193, 192, 191 and 189. They even labeled them for left hand orientation. Reassembled, bow now works great. She started out with 100 gr insert 125 gr point, now up to 200 gr point. We have only been involved with archery for about 1 1/2 years. My first trip to local pro shop convinced me that I needed to buy my own equipment. The pro shop 4 hours away is awesome, but too far. only been twice to purchase bows. They know I do my own work and have no problem with it. They just want happy customers.

I've recently had a fairly popular bow shop, pretty much roll there eyes when they saw my arrow setup. Kept insisting it was my arrow causing issues. Shot his arrow...same thing. Now we are twisting yoke strings, checking timing etc. Point of the story is, the guy wasn't a believer in higher f.oc and was more or less trying to not fix my bow.

For those who remember back in the mid 1990's i had a bow called the Jennings unistar and i had aluminum arrows and shot a bear razor ( fixed blade with a flat tip.with a bleeder ) i still have the arrow and tip....i shot a bear between the eyes at about 15 yrds which dropped in his tracks . the arrow broke trying to remove it. A lot of the guys who had been hunting bears with a bow couldn't believe a bear could be killed like that..they were amazed and a 12 pt buck at 20 quartering to in the front shoulder. It dropped his 2 front shoulders and plowed 15 yrds and was done...the butcher cut into the shoulder and hit my broadhead ....the shoulder fell apart into 2 pieces...( it broke his band saw hitting the broadhead ).... I wouldn't want to try those shots with a mechanical...an untuned bow and untuned arrow will loose energy over a tuned bow and arrow...i like light fast arrows for 3D and field target...i like a bit of weight for hunting...keep preaching it brother..

Hey Troy I’m looking to go with a heavier spine but not sure with my set up I’m shooting a Hoyt carbon element g3 26” draw and 60lbs any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Your point of view makes a lot of sense to me. I first heard about high FOC and Ashby over on Clay Hayes' channel. He's a traditional/self bow shooter, so no center shot. Gotta make sure the arrow bends right and then stabilizes. I am applying the RF method (bareshaft, nock tune bareshaft) to my new Bear Whitetail Legend and found 2 setups that work. Not looking for crazy penetration because my primary target is turkey and pinning them down or making flight hard is desirable. Anywho, came across something interesting with dynamic spine. I found a 30", 400 spine with 125 tip and 21 gn standard insert 11-12 FOC and a 30", 300 spine with 150 tip and 50 gn brass insert 17-18 FOC that bareshafted great through paper at 10 meters. Both setups put fletched bullet holes through paper at 20 meters. Still work to be done but going great. For grins I went to 3 Rivers dynamic spine calculator that I use for my trade setups and decided to enter the compound arrow info to see what it calculated for them (used the closet arrow in the list that matched brand and total arrow weight). 400 spine setup was at like 73.1. I expected the 300 spine setup to have a similar dynamic spine calculated, but it was at 81.7. Putting a 175 on the 300 spine gave a dynamic spine of 75.3, much closer to the 400 spine dart, but I couldn't get that thing to fly for shirt. I expected the 175, 300 spine to fly similar to the 400 spine dart, but that was wrong. So I am not quite sure what this means (if anything), but it feels like something is there. I wish there was a better dynamic spine calculator for compound arrows. I would love for you to explore the dynamic spines of your arrow setups that tune well to a particular bow. Like how does the dynamic spine of a well tuned 550 gn arrow compare to a well tuned 650 gn compare to a tuned 750 etc....to a tuned 1000 gn arrow. I would think they should all be similar, but my limited results seem to counter that. The reason I think this is interesting and useful is that if you find one arrow setup that works but maybe want to change it up somehow (heavier head etc), it would be useful to be able to use the calculated dynamic spine as a guide for a place to start. Save some time. Maybe get some of your smart friends to help you do the calculations for your arrows and then tell us so can all get a little smarter. *Edit: yes I know this is basically how spine charts work, but they usually only have 100 and 125 gns listed. I think a universal calculator would make building different arrow setups easier.

Sorry Troy I have been gone from your great work for a while, my son and I last year did everything you said to do and it worked , we both shoot 200 grain single bevel w/ 100 grain inserts , thanks so much it was fun going thru every step to make it work up to and including sharpening. My problem is I had shoulder surgery so I had to purchase a crossbow. I would like to know if you have any advice for me about Fear Of Change. & Adult Arrows-bolts. So i have a question, i have been watching THP and have seen you in a couple of video's with them talking about arrows and tuning and why a heavy arrow is better than light arrow. You turned a light bulb on in my head and would like your opinion on something if i could since you seem to have what was once called common sense (not so common anymore) you mentioned having a lighter draw weight is less important than arrow weight. You have talked about a young lady who has a heavy arrow and a light draw weight and still passing threw a buffalo if i remember correctly. I stopped bow hunting a few years back due to injury on my shoulders and low back and have since started crossbow hunting (which i HATE) after watching you talk about a heavy arrow and a light draw i got to thinking... could i bow hunt again....hmmm? Here is my question do you think if a person could pull back a #55 draw weight with a heavy arrow that it would be effective enough to kill a whitetail? And if so could you recommend a arrow setup for me? I would really like to bow hunt again but i just cannot risk drawing a bow back with #70ish draw weight. But i feel like if i could lighten the weight i could still use a bow. Any input would be much appreciated. Thank You and God Bless

My new bow tuning consists of center shot/yoke tuning to get bullet holes though paper, then its all arrow tuning after that so yeah, agreed.

Not to mention how quiet your bow is when you shoot a 600 grain arrow, I’ve had people in the Archery shop say wow your bow is quiet but it’s just because I’m shooting a heavy arrow And my arrow is requiring all the energy to send it down range, they’re loud Boing sound their bow makes is wasted energy Because their twister stick would not handle the power

One factor people don’t like is a broad head that has lift. What if we could design one intentionally that would make arrow fly flatter and longer distances

Elkshape struck a nerve with the ranch fairy.... there is alot more to tuning a setup than changing point weights and twisting nocks on arrows.... you can't base the whole ashby principles on science...Then turn around and throw the science / math out when it comes to tuning bows.... its a system that has to work together....

Guys seem to forget that 30 years ago we shot 200 fps with 600 grain arrows at 50 or 60 yards. Now they think it's only good to 20. What a joke. I shoot 605 grains at 200 fps out to 50 yards and have no issues. You just have to know the range, or even better have an ezv sight. No bow is fast enough to stop a deer from jumping the string. Not even a crossbow.

Well not everyone bending the cams and limbs of their bow are doing it because they are shooting a swizzle stick. I had to do all that to my bow shooting 609 grains, 250 grains up front. I torque my bow or something. Haven’t figured it out yet. On another note, I heard you mention Dorge from fire nock on a video but just mentioned a graph he has. I would like you to explain why he is completely opposite with his view. I talked with him over the phone and he is so against FOC and heavy arrows and he is a scientist. I couldn’t argue my point with that education but I’m still shooting heavy anyway. Just added his carbon insert to the front of my arrow. So could you make a video explaining or maybe contrasting his setup and heavy arrows?

I shoot trad. I pick my broadhead and overall arrow weight then tune my arrow to the bow. Tuning the arrow is about the only option I have to achieve the best arrow flight. Unlike compounds I can't adjust my rest or my cams. I can't adjust the bow weight up or down. My sight doesn't exist so there isn't any adjusting it either. All I can do is build my shafts and adjust the arrow nocks and shaft length until I achieve good bareshaft flight (testing every shaft). Then I finish up fletching the arrows.

I’m a little confused. At first you said pick the arrow that your bow will shoot, then you said pick “this” lethally tested arrow and tune your bow to shoot it. Which one is it?

When you state that "multiple combinations may work with a bow and the archer's shooting form", your statement was borne out by Aaron's success with both a 150 and 200 grain broadhead. His bow shot both well, but the heavier point flew even better. Some people are obsessed with speed and won't come around until "Outcome B" occurs. Thank you for your fine content.

Hi Troy I’m 6’4” with a 30 inch draw length do you have any recommendations on a long bow or recurve? I’m thinking I need 70”

I have been wanting to get into archery and bow hunting for some time, after watching this video and all of your other videos in regards to bow and arrow turning I am conflicted on if I should build my own arrows off the bat or should I have an archery shop set me up with the arrow weight I am looking for along with my first bow?

My local bow shop (very nice wonderful people) tried to convince me that adult arrows were a ridiculous trend. “I’ve hunted all over the world and everything I’ve killed has been with a 100 grain broadhead. Why change something that works?” Based on his stories of shooting whitetail at 90 yards, I’m assuming he’s an amazing archer. However, I am not. I’d rather shoot an adult arrow to hedge my bet against my “buck fever.” The deer that I’ve shot prior with 100 grain Montecs, never went more than 75 yards and dropped. I think that has just been dumb luck. Lucky shots. I did not have opportunity to shoot a whitetail or elk last year to see the results. I hope to get them this year and necropsy.

Great video, keep up good work I’m gonna get some 260 spine arrows see if I cannot get a little better flight out of my bow , 300 spine 300 grains up front , 29-1/4 inches in shaft length , think they are flexing still to much , you told me I was right on spine , meaning go stiffer

As a traditional shooter it makes perfect sense to me to tune the arrow to the bow why do you want to take a bow and make it out of square, Out Of Tune, out of sync, whatever you call it so that you can shoot your favorite Arrow. The bow is going to shoot its best when it's completely timed when the string is in perfect alignment with the arrow rest those things matter why do we want to make the arrow point to the left or right just so we could shoot an arrow that doesn't belong on that bow

Troy, what a out the objection ED was shooting older cable drive bows or trad. Vs modern day compounds shooting super fast? Biggest objection I hear is trajectory.

Hope…for the best, but, PREPARE FOR THE WORST! Best annology I can think for shooting “adult arrows” in a hunting situation. Animals move after you shoot sometimes…broadside shots aren’t always given….I prefer to have an arrow/projectile capable of handling the worst case scenario.

idk bud I still shoot flappers and flat kill stuff the days of shooting tiny cut two blades went out in the nineties what do you guys do when you hit an animal back with single or double bevel 1 inch cut because its nothing to pass thru deer but you never have to I prefer the giant holes and game that is sick instantly I seen my share of pass throughs in the liver and the deer way his tail and walk off maybe never to be seen again you guys keep doing you but most have been there and I don't plan on going backwards anytime soon lol

It’s funny you say no 2 shooters shoot the same… you and Jordan at Archery country both shot your bow when paper tuning… both of you had different results… so you do have a small sample size.

Seems to work I'm 60 ish lb draw 29 inch 250 element tornado weighing 618 Grains shooting a bullet hole still have some that don't behave yet

love your content man piss on the haters. facts hurt these soft under 30 woke folks. you have helped me with your own time and money sent me broadheads etc.. since following you I get pass throughs on all my deer so far. started with 650 grains went down to 550 cause it tuned just as good gave me speed as well 289 fps on my mathews v3x 29 at 29 inches 78 pounds. 550 is blowing through deer here in north Florida if it did not I would go back to 650. they cant tell me 650 is to much to shoot over 40 I killed one at 55 yards with 650 you just have to use the range finder. it was not my best shot but deer went 10 yards and died all because I had a plan b arrow thx to you...also thx to you I have my own bow shop do all my own work and my own arrows...God Bless brother...thx for your help
