Random Jam #34 [wonky pop w/ Digitakt, Octatrack MKII, Microcosm & ZOIA]

This one is pretty straightforward : the Digitakt plays the drums, the weird conga sound at 2:28, the flute and some FX. It also provides MIDI clock for the whole setup. The guitar goes into the ZOIA which acts as an A/B switch. The two path go to the Aeros Loop Studio but one of the output goes directly into my audio interface while the other output goes through the Microcosm first. The Microcosm adds that crazy glitchy strumming at 2:05 (I love this sound so muchhh). I also dial the reverb in at the very end to create some kind of climax. The Octatrack isn’t doing anything too crazy this week, it provides the bass and synth sound as well as the foley sounds I play in the intro.
Every element was recorded separately then mixed inside Logic Pro X where I also added some reverb/delay. I mastered the result with Izotope Ozone 9 and Waves Kramer Master Tape. I also did some edits.
I feel like this one is a lot like my other stuff and it makes me want to try some new things so stay tuned for some experimentation!

Love these videos. Are you running all this to a mixer and out to the effects via sends, or are you going directly into the effects?

Hey, I'm not sure what effects you're talking about specifically but either way I don't use a mixer at all, some of the machines go directly through pedals like the Microcosm and then everything is recorded onto separate tracks in my DAW. In the DAW is use FX sends for reverb and delay. :)

Where do you get your Samples from? Or what Samplepack(s) do you have? Btw i finally figured everything out regarding my setup with the whole Ditto-and-DAW-jam thing (dont know if you remember, but you helped me out with some issues a few months ago haha)

Hey I think I remember! Glad you sorted this out. :) I get most of my samples for free on internet, but I recently took a Splice subscription which is really sweet too! Otherwise I like freesound.org, and the foley sound in that specific jam come from the "DLUG" sample pack from True Cuckoo (he's an amazing synth KZfaqr). Hope that helps!

Hey dude, loving the videos as always. I'm super curious how you're recording everything onto separate multitracks when you use a scarlet 2i2. I've got one and feel like a seriously need an upgrade unless you have any workarounds you'd be willing to share? cheers!

Hey thanks, I actually used a combination of several audio interfaces : two Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (you can see them in the bottom left corner) + the Elektron Digitakt (it's a sampler but it can be used as an audio interface too), they have 2 inputs each so together they give me 6 inputs to work with. Definitely a bit convoluted but I don't have the money for a bigger interface and this works pretty well. 🙂 (I also need an upgrade though, the preamps on the Scarletts are not super good.)

is there any way to have this equipment all emulated on pc? i look for vst and just get plugins that interface with the equipment. are there vst plugins that can do the same as stand alone programs? like i know how to use the equipment he has but i dont own it, i want to know how i can do it on pc with the screen display essentially the same as having physical equipment infront of me?

Hey, with Ableton, a MIDI keyboard and an audio interface you can do pretty much the same thing, you can use Kontakt or pretty much any VSTs for the synth and the drums, there are many options.

Hey, I don't mixdown, I have two Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 + two inputs on the Digitakt, I record everything separately and mix in the DAW. :)

Hey, the bass is actually coming from the Octatrack, the ZOIA only does some routing and MIDI processing in this one, nothing really glamorous. :)
