About Randy’s presentation he states: “In 2017 I proposed a simplified method for commercial queen breeders to select for varroa-resistant stock, and then undertook a demonstration project to see if it would work. After six years of strong selection, we appear to be making substantial progress!
The basis of genetic improvement programs in any organism is selective breeding, where individuals are chosen that are expected to have offspring with desirable properties. This is directed evolution: fitness is defined by the breeder rather than by the individual’s ability to survive and reproduce in nature.
Randy Oliver has kept bees for most of his life, and views beekeeping through the eyes of a biologist, researcher, and nature lover. He makes his living as a commercial beekeeper, and maintains the website www.ScientificBeekeeping.com
Randy is a popular writer in the bee journals and an invited speaker worldwide, sharing his knowledge of bee biology, colony health issues, and practical beekeeping management.

I remember when he had just started that program of breeding resistant bees. Glad to see one of the premier treatment researchers has finally realized the futility of it all. I have not had as good of results as he has. But I will continue to work in that direction with my 20 hives and overwintering nucs!

I've been a hobby beekeeper in Melbourne Australia for about 15 years, about 4 years ago I lost them all due to a particularly bad year of wax moth and small hive beetle so I figured I would have a break for a while. About 2 years ago I found a swarm and brought it home, they are the nicest bees I've ever had & they grew to five colonies. 6 months ago I noticed one hive displaying the same symptoms that you showed where the bees uncap the larvae, I believe it's called bald brood & I was going to requeen in order to breed it out, but it sounds like it might be a good thing to keep. Although varoa has been found in New South Wales it's not in Victoria yet, so they must have other reason for their behaviour.

Fantastic video Randy. Thanks for all the teaching to us beginning to advanced to commercial beekeepers out there. At our homes, outyards, or ranches in the valley and hills we all appreciate it. To all the people you have had a chance to speak to here in the states and all over the world they are surely more knowledgeable about beekeeping now. Having honeybees and the working, tending to, and caring for them has made it easier for many of us through your teachings whether it be in auditoriums, online webinars, or here in our club in the Foothills of the Sierra Nevada in Northern California. Thanks a lot. GP 🐝👍😃🌱🪻🫒
