Guitar Player Best New Talent 1981!
In 1979, Black Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne was forming a new band. During an interview with Raw Power Magazine editors Robert Olshever, Murray Schwartz and Scott Stephens (future singer of Liquid Blue), Ozzy mentioned he was looking for a new guitar player. Randy's name was suggested during the interview and the next day Robert asked friend and future Slaughter bassist Dana Strum to try to reach Randy to see if he was interested. Rhoads got the call for the audition just before his final show with Quiet Riot. He walked in with his Les Paul guitar and a practice amp and started warming up. Osbourne immediately gave him the job. Rhoads recalled later, "I just tuned up and did some riffs, and he said, 'You've got the gig'; I had the weirdest feeling, because I thought, 'You didn't even hear me yet'". Osbourne was drunk and passed out during the audition, but described Rhoads' playing as "God entering my life". Rhoads subsequently recommended his friend Greg Leon, who also taught guitar at Musonia for Rhoads' mother, to replace him in Quiet Riot, and then departed for the UK to write and record with Osbourne in November 1979.
The band, then known as The Blizzard of Ozz headed into the studio to record the band's debut album, titled Blizzard of Ozz. Rhoads' guitar playing had changed due to the level of freedom allowed by Ozzy and Bob Daisley and he was encouraged to play what he wanted. His work with Quiet Riot has been criticized as being "dull" and did not rely on classical scales or arrangements. Propelled by Rhoads' neo-classical guitar work, the album proved an instant hit with rock fans, particularly in the USA. They released two singles from the album: "Mr Crowley" and the hit "Crazy Train". The British tour of 1980-81 for Blizzard of Ozz was with Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake.

He "didn't stop there". Death barely stopped his power, as in 2017 he's still the best electric guitar player the planet has ever seen. Yes, there have been fastest, more skilled, whatever. But none has the whole package like Randy, that special magic that's still to be topped.

Timid like a freight train. He was a nice dude by all accounts. He'd also take your head off in a second in a guitar battle. Absolutely ferocious player with Ozzy. He and EVH - two Cali dudes were anything but laidback in their respective approach to guitar. Both very aggressive. Us early 80s kids were spoiled.

Blizzard and Diary were two of my first rock/metal loves of my life at 10-11 years old. They were dark, mysterious and 'evil', which was amazing to a kid like me back then. Those two recordings still stand tall 40 years later. Randy's playing is an inspiration to me still today even though Im a drummer first and guitarist second. I remember exactly when I heard on the radio he died and never will forget it. RIP and thank you, Randy.

I remember how epic that music was when it came out on the radio. It was like a second coming of Hendrix. So many guitarists can play those parts, just as fast, etc. But none of them seem to move Earth with their playing like Randy could. He could make feedback pound you sonically like thunder! It’s fun to play his licks, but nobody will ever breathe the same life into them.

don't forget Steve Gaines. very similar to Randy's story. just got in Skynyrd, made the album "Street survivors" and I think a live one too, then the plane crash in 77 I was a crazy fan of Randy. just heard that guitar and it grabbed me and I said I got to learn that. I did not know what he looked like for a long time but when I seen pictures of him playing I thought "this guy looks exactly like he sounds" beautiful!!!!!! Steve Gaines was a more blues southern rock guy. I thought he made great contributions to Skynyrd. Fit in good with them and sang good too. made some classic songs. so many great guitar players

Only the good die young. Randy was more than just a catalyst, he was that one man who brought Ozzy back from a terrible slump and possibly saved Ozzy from a slow death alone too. I think Ozzy looks at Randy like an angel back then and still right now. Rhoads and 22 year old Buddy Holly, the 2 biggest tragedies in rock history, IMHO. Both super nice and wicked talented guys cut down in plane crashes.
