I just ordered a 534 from goodwill!

Great machines as long as the plastic bevel gears hold out. Everything else is durable and lasting. If a gear does break, some suitable replacements are available that last longer than the original ones. 😎👍🏼

The original gears will all need replacement by now. If you get new ones installed properly, it will give you years of continuous service.

Watch my videos on truly heavy duty machines. I don’t recommend any new machines as being “heavy duty”. The only new machine that is heavy duty is a commercial sewing machine.

@@annasfabric3376 I recommend any FRONT LOAD, 15 CLASS, 158 SERIES KENMORE. THE ONLY TOP LOAD (drop in bobbin) MACHINES THAT I RECOMMEND ARE THE SINGER Slantamatic SERIES OR THE OLD BLACK 66 CLASS MACHINES. A SINGER 514 IS A WORKABLE MACHINE AFTER YOU REPLACE THE ORIGINAL DRIVE GEARS, BUT I DON’T RECOMMEND BUYING ONE.

@@annasfabric3376 oil the zig zag mechanism and work the needle bar left and right while the stitch width is set at its widest. It may take a little time to come around, but stick with it and you will prevail. 😎👍🏼

@@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 thank you so much! I used your videos to oil it and it works now! I only have one issue with tension when I do a 3 step zig zag. I keep trying diff tensions on bobbin and on upper thread and still the most left step of the 3 step zig zag is always too loose. If i tighten then the right side is too tight. I just can’t perfect it. Grrrr

@@annasfabric3376 that usually means that the bottom thread tension is too tight. Put the top on number 4, then balance the bottom to match by carefully loosening or tightening the tension screw in the bobbin case. It shouldn’t be easy to pull, but with just a slight resistance.

It’s usually a problem in the foot control. Most folks sew slowly so the low speed contacts on the foot control burn through and when you press on it, it skips straight to high speed. The stock Singer control can be rebuilt if you have a capable service person nearby. Or, you can replace the foot control by buying one online. Sewingpartsonline.com will have a generic replacement foot control. Inexpensive and easy to install. Two wires to attach.

If the stitch length is set on zero, they will only move up and down in place. There will be no fabric movement. Hence, stitch length zero.

If your machine is a 513 Singer Stylist, you probably have a broken feed gear. Remove the single screw that holds your bottom cover in place and check. The feed gears are in the center of the mechanism and they are easily inspected. If the gears are stripped, you can tell very easily. Those replacement gears are available and a skilled repair person can fix it for you. Good luck.

Take the screw out from under the free arm area and inspect your gears. Remove the single screw and remove the plastic bottom cover. There are four composite (not metal) gears there. The two on the right are the feed gears. They are probably stripped. Make sure your stitch length dial is set on its longest setting before you check. If it’s on zero, that could be the problem also, so check that first. With that model machine, I would be surprised if the gears aren’t stripped.

If your stitch length isn’t set to its longest stitch length setting, the machine will either sew in one place without moving, or sew in reverse. Lengthen your stitch. 😎

@@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 actually, that’s another issue, it doesn’t change stitch lengths either. It’s just weird that only in the red flexistich mode, it goes in reverse. It does however stitch a beautiful straight stitch🤦🏻‍♀️

@@rhondamercado7527 make sure that your dial is not in the buttonhole mode. Anything that affects your feed mechanism is suspect. Have you removed the bottom cover to see if your feed gears are broken? On that model, it can only be one of three conditions: 1) the feed gears are broken 2) the feed gears are about to break 3) the feed gears have been recently replaced. The feed gears will be in the center on the main shaft in the bottom of the machine. There are two of them. There’s a fat one and a skinny one. The skinny one is behind the fat one. Observe them turning as you turn the hand wheel. Look for missing teeth on either gear. Usually one of them will be stripped entirely of its grooves.

@@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 the gears actually look pretty good. But I did find out that there is a shaft washer that disintegrated and is no longer sitting in that small gap there on top. I can’t find the video I saw were the gentleman used a regular washer and cut it and replaced it. Unfortunately Lowes is not open today so I’ll have to wait till tomorrow to take the remaining piece that I found to see if they have something of that size. I did see the actual part called a shaft washer on sewing parts online but if Lowes has something comparable that won’t work I’d rather do it right away then have to wait for the shipment. I’m not sure if that has anything to do with my reverse problem but I’m sure that washer is there for some purpose. Thank you and I will be having something to tinker with the next few days.

@@rhondamercado7527 order the correct shaft washer. It just snaps in. Easy. Peasy. The shaft washer will eliminate the knock of the upper shaft when you’re zig zagging. It will have zero (0) nada, none, zilch effect on the feed system. If you can’t move your stitch length dial, the problem is right there and no place else.

It’s most likely a broken gear. Remove the upper cover panel and the lower cover panel and it will be obvious to you. Usually there are broken gear fragments that are easy to spot.

If you’re asking me why it’s not sewing, I would venture to guess that a gear has broken. You can remove the bottom cover and look for broken black bits of gears lying around. The four gears that are prone to breakage are on the bottom center (2) and on the bottom left (2). That’s assuming that your needle is installed properly with the flat side facing to the rear, and you’re using all purpose thread, and the machine is threaded correctly.
