35lbs ruck (175lbs male). 29.9 miles. 1950ft elevation. First it was knee caps, then it was blisters, shin pain followed the pain in the feet. Last 2 miles were unbearable with shoulder pain added when I took off the ruck in my driveway. 10/10 would recommend for a fun family activity

Get used to walking for 12 hours? Ever had season passes to Disney world? lmao
@kendov288
@kendov288 3 жыл бұрын
It is a flat ground in Disney World, you are mostly walking in-between rides or breaks. People consume a bunch of low quality or junk food. Most people are not carrying a 40-50 lbs. backpack with them when they go. They mostly stand in the ridiculously long lines for mediocre entertainment. Adults are often consuming alcohol so you can kiss the caloric deficit a big FAT goodbye. Air conditioning, are you in the Air Force or something? So your analogy might be a little off. (I get that you were making a joke, I just want people to get accurate assessment of the conditions.)

A good approach to rests is to ruck 55 minutes and rest for 5 minutes (it's extra handy if you start your ruck march exactly on the hour, that way you'll always start your next segment on the hour--keeps it simple.) You should also plan a longer break of 20-30 minutes at the halfway point time-wise; that can be your lunch break. With just those little 5-minute breaks you'll be able to go and go; if you try to go non-stop, well, you'll need to call a cab....
@carlh.8797
@carlh.8797 Жыл бұрын
Nice approach! Also, keep the ruck on in those 5-min short rests, because it takes more energy to put it down and then get it back on, just lean back and have some water.

I know this is for a year ago, but I hope you’re still training! If you still can’t walk a 15 minute mile, I’d shoot for something of around that time. Seeing as you got to roughly 24 miles in 12 hours, walking double the speed will obviously greatly improve your mileage(to now 48 miles in 12 hours!)

So I saw this video about two months ago and just yesterday, I completed the challenge. In 12 hours, I went 50 miles flat. My pace was 13.38 per mile. Blisters were awful, but mentally I felt great. My goal is to become a green beret and in two weeks I leave for West Point for basic training.

Gave this a preliminary try for 1/3 the time. 17.5 miles in 4:25 on gravel with OCPs. Weight 220 so ruck was 46 before water. Regretfully didn't pack food. 3 liters of water lasted but needed more. Garmont T8, great boot but distance trashed my feet. I hate to say my knees were locking up mile 16. I hit a wall at around 2800 calories burned about the same time. Might try again for farther, but this is a monster of a task.

I ruck all the time, not as long as I used to (I'm 61 years old) but I'll still get in a good amount of time and distance in and the younger guys who've never worn a military uniform can't even keep in step with me that I try to help them with endurance tips and no Rucksack at all, but I do understand that the guys today weren't pushed even in school towards being physically fit and I had a foundation for that from very early. That's why I invite friends and co-workers to just come along and enjoy the "walk" but I almost have to come back to get in the effort I need to keep in step with the timeframe I set for myself to finish. Thanks, I will let my friends see this video to let them know that I'm not crazy and it is something that other people do.

...and if your walking on a road used by cars walk AGAINST the traffic. That is, in America at least, the left side of the road. I drive a dump truck in suburban eastern Massachusetts towns. Small roads, limited sight distance, heavy contrast and deep shadows with the rising and setting sun and day after day I see people (very often the same people) walking/running with their backs to the oncoming traffic (me, the 80,000 pound ten wheel dump truck) with their earbuds on rendering them deaf to my approach. These are affluent areas/neighborhoods I drive through and it amazes me how stupid these PHD's and children of PHD's can be. Life really is a special operation in that your success or failure to accomplish the mission (your daily walk for example) is very much a function of your ability to be present, awake and aware. Do you really trust that complete stranger barreling down on you at 45 MPH, who you don't even know is there, with your life? ...now add a cell phone to the equation...

Don't know if you did it yet but if you haven't, make sure you're hydrated. Hydration doesn't start when you feel thirsty, by then it's too late. Bring granola snacks, gum, and water too. The granola and water is meant to keep your body going. The gum is for taking your mind off of the ruck. If you don't have anything to distract you from the pain in your feet and shoulders, you have a much higher chance of failing. Good luck!

Exactly, and is far easier on your bones and knees, especially if you are overweight or obese. You are going to burn a lot of calories just by walking and caloric deficit-ing yourself. Ideally you would walk in your aerobic zone for heart rate, I've trained some morbidly obese people who cannot. When you are in a good weight range I would recommend jogging. Then you move on to running.

LORD Smok3y I was in the Grunts in the Corps. If anyone rucked slower than 3 miles and hour you were considered below average. I’d assume the rangers are a little more strict than we were. Keep at it man and pump those miles up. 12 miles around 3 hours (could be a little more) is a good pace.

You'll need to step it up a bit more, my guy. At Battalion, there were times when we did 20 milers for multiple days. When rucking, you have to train not only for terrain & distance but you also have to train for how sadistic the cadre will be that trains you. To put that into perspective, I had an ol' Sgt Major that would do 12 mile rucks BAREFOOT, easily. Think about that for a minute. The bar will be raised once you get to Battalion. It's not only a physical game but just as much mental. For example, if going through SF selection, you might do a 15 miler at night, then they'll load you up in a duce and a 1/2 and you'll think that you're done and you take a breather. Once the truck stops and everyone dismounts, you'll find that you're right back to where you started the first 15 miler. Now, you'll have to do it all over again, possibly with more weight added... Mentally screwing with you to see if you'll break. Again, you have to be prepared (mentally & physically) for how sadistic the training cadre will be. When rucking, the trick is to put your mind in a place your body can't touch it. Don't just train for time or distance - both of which will be SMASHED, once you get to Battalion or you go for selection later on in your Spec ops careers. Lastly, PROTECT your feet. If your feet are f*cked, every mile will feel like 5. Good luck to all trying out to be “Bat Boys” or selection. RLTW.

Growing up hunting, rucking 12hrs was a normal thing. Especially when the game is few and far between. You might spot them a few miles away. Walk over there, now they are a few more miles away lol. Then when you down it, now you have miles and miles to drag it out. Or put a quarter on you back if you have enough people. Now days im into rockhounding, I pretty much do it the same way. But now I have a backpack and a 5gal bucket full of rocks to hump around. Still probably doesn't compare to Ranger shtuff tho. SpecOps are like super heroes to me.

I pass the physical requirements for the Rangers but I am striving to get PAST the recommended. I can't ruck for 12 hours because I'm 15 but I have always brought myself to keep going. Instead I walk with long strides in an effective, fast, surprisingly comfortable and natural way with my backpack that weighs 20 pounds + my bag of workout clothes or sometimes my big metal water bottle I bring to and from school(I weight 130, I also walk) Would this suite me for now (finished the track season and PT is not on a regular basis in my NJROTC because the school year is almost out. I also do a lot of other running in our athletic team.) Is there anything you would recommend for me? (live in apartments in a suburban community)

For me hiking with out weight is not big deal i can like that for the whole day i am not even sore the next time joints take a lot of beating especially when you go downhills and i dont good cardiovascular endurance not lungs but rucking is a whole different story try it sometimes but my backpack is not for this seems you need a specific backpack for rucking it really hurt my front shoulders seems the area that touches your skin needs to be soft and have sponges with winter clothes is fine but with just a t-shirt oh boy it hurts. Also its breaks you from your back is forwards and puts pressure to other parts of you body basically breaks and changes your body mechanics on how you used to walk. You need to to have strength and endurance inyour abs and spinal erecturs. Rucking is tought but i dont know if its health.

What makes this a “Ranger Workout Challenge”? Are you going to ruck a lot at Ranger School, RASP, or Batt? Of course, but you ruck just as much at SFAS, Q course, BUDS, and any other Spec Ops group. I figured these challenges would be tailored to the course or group that you put in the title.
@LifeisaSpecialOperation
@LifeisaSpecialOperation 6 жыл бұрын
Hybrid Cobra, Basically, the idea is to make a unique workout and then name it after a Spec Ops unit. The PJ workout is on the track....when I was at SCUBA school every single PJ was faster than me. So out of respect, I named the track workout after them. The SEAL workout is my favorite pool workout. And yes, Rangers do walk a lot. I think my rucks were heavier and longer in the Q course but my ruck felt heavier and I certainly was more miserable in Ranger school.

Can you substitute the rucksack for a adjustable weighted vest or will it make a difference in how you workout?
@brennanlatham9188
@brennanlatham9188 6 жыл бұрын
Mario Arreola it makes a difference. Walking around with your plates carriers on, even if it adds up to the weight of the ruck, it's easy as hell to do. The weight is all centralized directly over your hips and distributed evenly between the front and the back. It's balanced. The ruck is unbalanced. If you're not careful, you easily fall after trying to get up from a short halt with the ruck because of the imbalance. So it makes a big difference

I know that's why I mentioned march. As with any kind of sports there's not much difference between training and actual (qualification) performance. Training to pass is the point after all. However, this is truely ordinary level according to Nato regulations. Going in full gear (3x above) 5+ miles out; build a camp (or even a trench); doing combat exercises; and coming back for dinner was ordinary (supply runs are costly). The romans for example did the same in full gear (45-54 kg=120 lbs) but for 32 miles a day.

@@khrizkyle4707 I think you just hold a bias against the Army. From a person who has family in all branches they all agreed that they couldn't had made it into RASP or Ranger School. Also Delta is mainly Army now since the USMC have opened more SF type units within the branch. Btw it's extremely civilian of you to compare a Bootcamp to a Special Operations school with you being to neither. Also this is a prep workout and not the school, so I would go watch the actual RASP videos and Ranger School before comparing it to a bootcamp.
