Today we've got a nice, simple ranking - who is the strongest Vice-Captain of the Soul Society Arc? To determine this, we'll be looking at the Vice-Captains as they appeared in that arc BUT with the knowledge of everything they were currently capable of at the time.

Renji fighting with half of his power from not knowing his zanpakuto's name and with a broken bankai after his fight with Byakuya is crazy.

I mean like yeah the segments are missing but the reatsu control the length too meaning it’s always through it (I think) so it’s always the same length (at full extension) unless he keeps the segments connected

Keep in mind even if he had his true bankai early on he would still be weaker then byakuya. Reason renji was so strong in TYBW was because of soul palace training.

Hihiou Zabimaru isn't 1/2 strenght of Zouou Zabimaru, it just doesn't have it's versatility and some of the techniques, also his "broken" bankai doesn't really make a difference to him, it's not like Ikkaku's.

It actually is at half power if not lower. In bleach knowing the name of an ability (especially when it comes to zanpakuto) greatly increases one’s power. And Ichibei explicitly stated Zabimaru only told Renji half of his name. And this makes sense because Hihio is the baboon’s name and Orochio is the snakes name. Back in the SS arc the snake was blatantly criticizing Renji showing he didn’t respect him enough yet to tell him his name.

@@BigJohn303No one expected Renji to beat Byakuya in SS regardless. Especially considering Renji had just learned bankai. Even Byakuya states this. Kubo already stated by the full bring arc Renji's gotten stronger and his bankai had changed. He was already cemented on captain level. Him getting training in the royal palace is a bonus. Just like it was for Ichigo, Rukia and Byakuya.

Chojiro deserved like a one shot chapter or something placed between either post soul society or post fullbring during those time skips so he and Ichigo could have a proper rematch and so both really knew what the other could really do.

Nah, I honestly think Chojiro peaked upon gaining a Bankai and never gained a captain class reishi grade, so Ichigo rolfstomping Shikai Chojiro, not even needing to draw his blade is pretty typical for a full captain class shinigami fighting a lieutenant class shinigami. Yamamoto gained strength with age while Chojiro peaked early. Even with a Bankai, Ichigo shouldn’t need a hollow mask to fight Chojiro (he might not even need a Bankai to face him down)

@@Nube_Negrah agreed, rock paper scissors of abilities aside, I suspect that Ikkaku’s bankai is roughly as powerful of Chojiro’s bankai. That neither of them had achieved the captain class reishi grade of 3, and are somewhere around 4… as evidenced by Chijiro’s funeral lacking the konso reisai, that they could immediately lay him to rest without waiting 12 years like they have to for captains with reishi grade 3 or better

@@sh4d0wfl4reThat was prime Yamamoto, and there is no way in the world a junior Captain like Komamura or Hitsugaya get to scar Yamamoto or hurt Yhwach like that. The nerve of some people. If anything, it is Kubo’s fault for giving a character feats so disimilar. His higher feats suggest senior captain level

@@javierbustillopuerta9209 Yamamoto himself said it both in the manga and anime, he was weaker in the past. The first time he beat Yhwach Yamamoto was much weaker than even the one-armed Yamamoto. He even said that he only learned the later directions of his Bankai in the millennia after the first quincy war (unclear if he had even achieved the second direction in the past). There is a reason why Yama had to rely on sneak attacks in the flashbacks to the first Quincy war... he wasn't overwhelmingly strong back then. There is no reason to presume that Chojiro lost his captain class strength over the centuries of peace, and the lack of a konso reisai means Chojiro lacked the reishi grade of a captain upon death(they have to wait 12 years before doing a konso reisai, not days). Chojiro's Bankai wounded a far weaker Yamamoto and was formative for Yamajii... but Chojiro was never captain class, only peak lieutenant class

Sasakibe is so underrated. It’s such a shame Kubo decided to show him at the final arc just a little but even that was amazing. He deserves first place so much and more people should love him

During his funeral Byakuya read what everything Sasakibe had achieved in life. But this is more to honor the loss and the work he did. For a 1000 years, the soul reapers didn’t have a real war to fight or competition. While his Bankai may look astonishing, the fact that a Sternritter could even stole it, should be telling

I want to have him in the first place BUT i need an explanation from Kubo as for why Ichigo oneshot the guy who had a Bankai and more importantly *stats* capable of piercing the 1000 years old Yhwach if i dont get it then i cant since Ichigo destroyed him too easily in Shikai form *and with his fist* to then proceed to fail to beat Privarion Espada 106 Dorodoni with that same Shikai (and Ichigo doesn't even have his Shinigami badge on him in Hueco Mundo) it just makes no sense to me

@Grayson-Winchester ah so byakuya isn't very strong. As well as Soi Fon, Toshiro, Sajin. The point is you're unfairly judging a character who's full potential was never put on display. And realistically, should be a top 5 lieutenant, at least.

@TerreneitorPlusUltra ichigos power fluctuates wildly throughout the story depending on his mental state. That's why he seems like fodder sometimes and like a god other times. During hueco mudo, he was in a really dark spot. Constantly terrified of his inner hollow gaining control.

@LoganWH8 I completely agree when all three characters are morepiwerful then Iba especially since they were all confirmed to have bankai in the series. Love being a former captain, Renji having a bankai since the beginning of the series (unlocked his true bankai in zero squad training) and Shuhei got his after the cfoyw novels the timeskip after the tybw arc

I'd like to see Orihime restore it for her. It would be a buff for Rangiku and a display of just how capable Orihime has become if she can restore a lost fragment of the Soul King. And since they have a good relationship there's no reason for either one not to give it a try.

Not even just that, even if she just trained or planned a little more often because when she plans and trains with Toshiro they came with a pretty good plan, if she did that and training a little more often I genuinely think she’d obtain bankai very easily, not only then would she have a nail boost but also a bankai too and it’s not like it’s weird for a lieutenant to have a bankai because about 3 others do (Renji, Shuuhei and as much as sasakibe is clowned on we do have to give him props for at least having a bankai just sucks we didn’t see him in action more with his proper power)

Hisagi truly showed his worth and then some in CFYOW. Be it stopping Zaraki from his bloodthirsty battle craze to getting down to Soul Society's forbidden history he pulled his weight. The latter was especially risky since anyone who looks into or discovers the sin gets assassinated with Yoruichi making that coldly clear and even she wanted to wipe his memories, her tone menacing and paranoid.

I don’t know how to feel about Yoruichi regarding this statement. She and Urahara can enjoy their freedom and peace and never have to ever bother themselves with soul society’s affairs if they don’t want to. She clearly was against the false judgement of Urahara and Tessai. As a high noble, couldn’t she just order central 46 to leave them be and properly explain the situation. Is Yoruichi someone who deserves the hatred of Tosen or Yhwach? To keep the very very questionable soul society as it is.

@@Grayson-Winchester It's a residual from her time leading Squad 2 and her training/indoctrination. Secrets are kept under death, the nobles have shown themselves to be exceptionally paranoid and control hungry. Luckily she admitted to Kira and Rose later that while keeping secrets is necessary for stability, those in power do not learn or change much to her own exasperation. There's darkness in her just so there's plenty of light with her.

Sasakibe might have been able to put up a bit of a fight against Ichigo, but note; he's the only one of the three lieutenants he strikes against their head; the other two get a blow to the torso

Kind of feel like Omaeda should be last place. The fact that Ichigo not only manages to completely shatter his shikai but also follow through and knock him unconscious all with one single punch shows that his reiatsu control or quality is lacking. The fact that Isane and Iba both become captains later suggests that they might deserve to be higher on the list, or at least higher than Omaeda who wasn't promoted. I suppose the only caveat is that Isane's proficiency as a healer might've been a large factor in her promotion in the 4th Division, the medical division.

I feel like people are too hard on Isane when it comes to topics like this. Sure, she got one-shotted by Ichigo on Sokyoku Hill, but so did Sasakibe, who was apparently Bankai level for 1,000 years by that point. That scene was purely a speed blitz that would’ve happened to almost any lieutenant at the time. My point is……..the fanbase needs to give her a break. Like you said, the biggest culprit here is our sheer lack of knowledge about her.

Isane is I think too lighthearted too. The 4th division is supposed to be the best medics after the battle. Though I doubt she will ever fulfill the footsteps of a legend like Unohana

I can't be critical of her since she never got her chance to shine in the spotlight. Personally if Isane knew Unohanna's true nature then I honestly believe she could be a powerhouse because Unohanna could've been training her in the way of the sword this entire time. Also we have no idea what he shikai or bankai does, I think it's going to have something to do with maybe a blizzard a mix of wind and ice where it can heal her and allies but slowly damage her opponents with each snowflake being acidic to them or the more the snow lands on her opponents the more she takes her opponents reiatsu from them. I think in the Hell arc everyone is going to be truly shocked what Isane is fully capable of. And I think she may be the one to face a hell guardian version of her former master Unohanna, where the theme will be the new gotei vs the old gotei, a passing of the torch

I think Rangiku's shikai is underrated, partially because Kubo doesn't use it properly. Imagine if she gets that dust on your nose>throat>lungs, tf you gonna do? She can kill you from inside out.

That's a great point and helps to differentiate it from Senbonzakura. You might get shredded by the petals, but you aren't inhaling them like a cloud of ash.

theres a pannel of iba towards the end of the TYBW where he's carrying Komamura in dog form as he is seen looking over the sea of Lille's Bird creatures, i like that pannel alot of him

Iba also comes from family of Vice captains, so id say that whould give him advantage over Isane, he is probably trained by his parents and obviusly looks up to his father so id say he is skilled , he even somehow deduced that Ikaku has a Bankai without ever seeing it, so he is a smart guy. In other hand Isane is only healing and being stoped by her captain from battling here and there, thats all she does, and she got knocked out by ichigo who did put less power into his punch than other vice captains because she is a girl

Sasakibe getting jobbed not ONCE, not TWICE, but THRICE by Kubo, and giving him such a fucking pathetic offscreen death was one of the worst choices in the series. Dude literally gets smoked by Ichigo during the Rukia rescue, being completely forgotten about during Fake Karakura Town, and then dying before he even had time to shine is so bad.

This is just me being an obnoxious pedant, but he only specifically jobbed twice. Barely appearing at all might be more shameful, but him guarding fake karakura town doesn't prop anyone else up and in-universe is an important job considering Aizen has plans on plans. Getting "dunked on" thrice by Kubo might be the better phrasing.

IMO him getting knocked out by Ichigo just show that theres retcon in the series,and thats okay,nothing is perfect but knowing that,i do wish they go back into the series and change old stuff to fit the retcon,maybe instead of fully knocked out like the other vice captain he blocked it but still push him

I mean, you can say that Isane was willing to confront Rudbronn in the Hueco Mundo arc. Granted she would've had Unohana backing her up, but it does speak somewhat to her confidence and comfort with facing strong enemies. She also went up against Ichigo knowning he had defeated Renji. Not saying she is top tier, but her composure seems fairly noteworthy. Her kido and healing skill aside.

It's still strange we never got to see who Nozarashi's shikai spirit is since Yachiru is clearly the bankai one. The voice we get to hear is somebody that's older which you'd think would be the opposite and the older version would be the bankai. I wish Kubo would draw her so we'd get to see what she looks like

About the only thing I can grant Iba is that Ayon didn’t completely disintegrate him with the Cero it launched at him. I don’t know if Isane could have survived that.

I think there is a mention in CFYOW about Hisagi surviving situations he shouldn't have when he was learning about his true shikai, hinting at the fact he had access to some part of its ability.

I agree as well, until the TYBW Arc I consider Hisagi to be only below Sasakibe in strength. Though the difference between him, Renji and Ikkaku is low

Shuhei's Bankai is useful in very specific scenarios, usually one-on-ones with extremely powerful opponents. Renji's doesn't have that limitation.

@@heavenlyking8386 Nah, that's too much, especially since while Renji has the jobber reputation, he was pitted against stronger and more opponents than Hisagi was. Not to mention, the 10x reiatsu multiplier doesn't lie, even with an incomplete/false Bankai.

Something worth noting about Renji is that during the Arrancar arc, most vicecaptains had fodder specifically created by Kubo just for the sake of giving them fights and W's. Renji, however, was doomed for being a main character, meaning He was going against the Espada themselves; But He was always far above the other lieutenants just by having bankai alone; same thing applies to Uryu who scales around Renji's level in that arc, and maaybe even Rukia and Chad.

Sasakibe as a character is so weirdly done in general 😅 Its difficult to feel bad for the death of a character that we've barely seen for 10 panels in the series

Turning Chojiro Sasakibe into badass given his record in Soul Society was definitely one of the weirdest of Kubo's decisions. It's not like Sasakibe had done nothing; he was beaten by Ichigo with one punch. That's the same Ichigo who without real Zangetsu's help would've lost to Byakuya. How could someone on Kyoraku's level be beaten that way?

Ichigo was captain level at that time, he could have taken any sub-captain. Renji and Sasakibe will always be first and second due to the fact that they have bankai.

I think Ichigo's power level is kinda funny to follow, because you're right it seems like in Soul Society Kubo was intending for him to be captain level (but also to be fair Kubo retconned Sasakibe making him captain level too anyway), but then after growing immensely and getting way stronger he still fights the arrancar on the same level as the captains (both before being able to beat Grimmjow, and also after) lmao

@@solacee4327 Ichigo is very low Captain level in SS, weaker than Hitsugaya and Soifon, maybe even Tousen, in the Arrancar arc he is mid Captain level, surpassing Byakuya. Technically Ikkaku is captain level.

Yachiru Her Shi-Kai was questioned by Kotetsu. Said such a thing can't exist, that it can't be a Shi-Kai. But assuming it's a Shi-Kai, it means she would also have a Ban-Kai. But we know that Yachiru is a manifestation of Zaraki's Ban-Kai so does that mean that she's literally as powerful as his Ban-Kai? Or maybe she's not "that" powerful in her manifestation form and can't relies Ban-Kai whiteout actually being Zarakis Zanpakutõ rather then in a manifested state. Point is, she's a mystery for the most part and if she could relies Ban-Kai... I'm sure she would be one of the most terrifying and powerful being in Bleach. Assuming Zarakis Ban-Kai is from the Demon relm, then she's also a Demon. Ichogo was confused too when he couldn't feel her spiritual pressure. And non of the shinigami troops from squad 11 either, they couldn't feel her spiritual pressure when zaraki told them to find her. They basically said that they never feel Yachiru's spiritual pressure. It's similar to how in the hell arc when the "New" hell hollows was introduced. Ichigo and Renji couldn't see or feel them coming. I think that indicates that Yachiru infact is from hell too in some unexplained way.

And as a reminder for Yachiru is that Ichigo did not notice her during the kenpachi fight until she's standing on him. That should put her in the upper levels at least.

Ikkaku is respected by the vice captains and captains, so he's at least around their level. And even he is afraid of Yachiru. It's unfortunate the only canon fight we've seen her in gets turned into a Kenpachi fight.

@@MrGksarathy Lilinette fought hand to hand with Ukitake, at near equal levels without getting slashed. Stark was injured by Shinsui and needed her help to fight against him. Seems like she was stronger than Stark. She just didn't utilize it for some reason. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Tbf to Sasakibe, I imagine he was likely caught way off guard by Ichigo's strength. Like, he would have heard about a powerful Ryoka running the Soul Society gauntlet, but hearing about something and actually experiencing it is two different things.

this is pure speculation but Isane can probably use tenteikura without an incantation. As the vice captain of the healing division she needs to be quite adapt at kaido and this should extent to other kido as well. Kubo probably just wanted to show the incantation. Matsumoto is lazy and doesn't train, I doubt that if she can use it without an incantation that Isane can't do the same

Agreed, honestly I'd bet if we got any feats for him, he would probably sit either around Hinamori on the low end, or Hisagi on the high end. But with no actual feats he can only belong near the bottom. Honestly even with no feats, given he and Ikkaku seem pretty relative, one could probably make an argument for him being above Omaeda, but to each their own on that argument.

I’ll be honest, Sasakibe’s higher end feats put him on a level similar to someone like Kyoraku. Scarring Prime Yamamoto and hurting Yhwach are very big deals. The fault lies in Kubo for not knowing what to do with the character. Now people can’t believe his strength, even disregarding newer feats.

I do think there’s an argument to be made for Isane and Iba to be scooted all the way up to 3rd and 4th place. Not based on anything we’ve seen, but if they’re captains at the end of the series, that means that in the Soul Society arc, they had to have been very close to achieving bankai. There are definitely some contextual clues there. You have Isane, who was training for however many centuries under who we came to know as an absolute powerhouse that is Kenpachi Unohana. And then there’s Iba, who was perfectly aware that Ikkaku had achieved bankai, which I think could speak to a level of mastery he has himself. Maybe not, since Byakuya clearly can’t detect that Renji and Ichigo had achieved bankai, but those two also kinda hadn’t actually done it, so that may be a factor. And think about it, wouldn’t it make sense for two vice-captains who would become captains within 10 years of us meeting them to be stronger than jokes like Omaida and 1-dimensional fighters like Nemu and Nanao? Also, as far as Sasakibe appearing as weak as he did… at what point do we believe we were not under the effects of Kyoka Suigetsu?

SS Hisagi seems to be on par with SS Renji in terms of swordplay. Also Hisagi seems to have the better Shikai. I can't imagine Renji dominating Findor with Zabimaru the way Hisagi did with Kazeshini. If it wasn't for Renji's Bankai, I would put Hisagi on 2nd place. So: Beginning of Soul Society Arc: Hisagi > Renji Ending of Soul Society Arc: Renji > Hisagi

There is a chaotic luck component for sure, but SS Ichigo is stronger that all those vice captains together at that moment. Remember that time made Sasakibe soft too the same way as Yama-ji

Pure BS bruh. They squared up against him directly. Sasakibe had already drawn and unleashed his shikai. Omaeda got caught mid release but Saskibe saw the whole thing go down and he was ready. IIRC he even got a swing or 2 out. He wasnt snuck, he was just trash.

I was a teenager at the time and therefore not the most media understanding savvy, but I always took Chojiro's swift defeat by Ichigo as a massive hype thing for Ichigo's power rather than any nerf on him. Surely the vice-captain of the 1st division would be massively strong and his lack of fights was them holding him in reserve like Yamamoto's bankai. I was sorta right.

Ichigo blitzing Sasakibe is proof that that even experienced Soul Reapers suffered greatly due to their arrogance as an organization. The SS is really cool, but besides Kenny and Kurotsuchi they always underestimate humans. If the Fullbringers were more powerful they probably would have killed half the squad before they even thought to get serious. I think that Omaeda probably jumped in power a bunch between the FKT arc and TYBW arc just on an increase in resolve. Omaeda's weakness definitely feels like his lack of resolve. We see Ichigo go from getting wrecked to beating Renji in the SS arc on gathering his resolve for an example of what I mean.

Honestly, Sasakibe being the strongest vice captain should've been a no brainer even before the reveal in the thousand year blood war. He's the vice captain of his strongest soul reaper in the Gotei 13 and is clearly older than all other vice captains as age does often play a part in a soul reaper's strength. His vice captain cloak is different from the others and much more similar to that of an actual captain. Yes, he didn't perform well against Ichigo, however, there's a lot to consider especially since all vice captains who attacked Ichigo very most likely weren't taking him as seriously as they should've which allowed him to knock them out. Also, during the fake karakura town arc, Sasakibe was present. He was the one holding up the barrier around the fake town hiding it from the real world and most likely preventing the Espada's powerful attacks from going beyond the Town's boundaries. That also would probably explain why Starrk's cero metralleta didn't obliterate the surrounding towns outside karakura. He's the one who showed the visoreds into the town when they couldn't find it.

I agree with your placements, the only objection would be with Isane and Iba. I'd swap them because of knowing nothing of Iba, not even his Zanpakuto's name. At least we know Isane's Zanpakuto release and name for what it's worth.

Honestly I see no reason why Renji is stronger than Hisagi, Kira or even Nemu, other than plot. I would put Matsumoto behind Neminas well and switch Isane with Iba, I might be wrong, but Iba didn't do much, Isane at least showed some techniques

Achieving bankai alone requires spiritual energy that dwarfs the power of most lieutenants. And releasing said bankai comes with a 5-10x multiplier in spiritual energy. The top 3 of this video are the top three because they had bankai as lieutenants.

Hisagi's ability to pull himself back together I'm sure is actually Kazeshini much like how Ichigo's Hollow powers worked when he was in great danger or at deaths door it automatically activates unknowingly by Ichigo at times seemingly at odds with him much like how Hisagi didn't have a good relationship with Kazeshini to start with but if Hisagi doesn't exist neither does Kazeshini. So I'm 99% sure that ability is Kazeshini acting out of self preservation for himself and Hisagi. As he does like Hisagi just wanting to be used properly

I wonder if Yachiru is truly stronger than Ikkaku or not. Bankai and all. I always liked how the mere fact that regular seated officers were lieutenant level showed just how much better at fighting the 11th division really is. With what we know about Chojiro's zanpaktuo and history, it would have been cool to see him fight either Starkk or Harribel. Against Harribel his lightning would be an interesting counter to her water and provide that battle with some much needed fluff, but Starkk would be more fitting as Chijiro would be another ancient soul reaper like Ukitake and Kyoraku with let's say "reasons" to forgo using his bankai in the fight.

I predicted Renji and Chojiro would be the top two respectively, but tbf that WAS pretty obvious lol. And while it is pretty goofy that Chojiro was taken out so easily by Ichigo in the Soul Society arc, it DOES have some grounds for believability. At that point, any info they had on Ichigo showed him to be powerful, yes, but not at the same level as the captains (Though he did beat Kenpachi prior to this, but I'm not sure how common knowledge that was). Point being, when he appeared they sent three Vice Captains to deal with him, implying the group as a whole weren't exactly taking him too seriously, so Chojiro likely thought he was fighting the equivalant of a fairly strong Vice Captain, like Renji, only to get taken by surprise and sucker punched by an Ichigo that was FAR stronger and more skilled then he expected. Does make you wonder how that engagement would have gone if the three Vice Captains knew exactly what they were squaring up against

So no one is going to talk about how often Kubo truly reuses the same power? That one guy who’s sword turns into windmills (he fought Uryu) Rangiku and Hainako with sword turning into dust which she can control Byakuya with senbonzakura turning into pedals he can control Then we have powers like Zamari, Muramasa, Tsukushima, Sternritter L the love sternritter Z the zombie Maiyuri (kinda) and the scientist arrancar (along with Quincy stealing bankai) all with some sort of ability to control someone else/their power turning it against their opponent.

This guys are the true wasted potential of bleach. Out of the og lieutenants only like 4 of them ever did anything while the rest were always kept in off camera business and that honesty is a shame. That by itself isn't bad but sadly it ends up with cases like Isane and Iba who we barely ever knew about their combat abilities and suddenly they are Captains now.

I'd personally would have Izuru swap places with Hisagi. I think Wabisuke is just that much stronger of a shikai.But other than that, this list is pretty accurate in my opinion.

It's impossible to scale the Vice-Captains in SS arc aside from maybe Renji and Yachiru. They don't share a chain of enemies and their feats exist in a vacuum.
