I Rank All 13 Studio Albums by The Beatles! The Beatles Unlocked: Beatles 101!
Hey guys!
Tonight, I rank all 13 studio albums by The Beatles!
From1963-1970, The Beatles were the world’s biggest Rock Band! No other Rock band in history, not even the mighty Led Zeppelin can lay claim to the musical mileage that The Beatles covered in their almost mythical musical journey!
In only 7 years, this band would shock the world, reaching new musical heights with each and every album, and #1 singles that just refused to stay at #2 or lower on the charts!
Which album is The Beatles weakest, thus ranking at the unlucky #13 spot? Which Beatle album do I rank as #1? Which albums made my top 3? What albums did John Lennon dominate as songwriter? And on which albums did Paul McCartney emerge as The Beatles De facto Leader?
These and many, many more questions are fielded in tonight’s Beatles Unlocked video!
If you enjoy tonight’s video, please consider giving us a thumbs-up, as that helps a ton with the KZfaq algorhythm, and help with channel growth!
If you haven’t subscribed to the channel yet, just hit that subscribe to ‘The Tribe’ button, the tap the Top-Bdell Icon, so that you’ll be notified of all future video!
Feel free to share my videos! Your sharing has helped so much getting the word out!

Yeah! I think Rubber Soul just might be my favorite Beatles record. They also hit home runs with several songs that were not even on albums--Rain, I'm Down, and Paperback Writer! Two of these were B-sides; for most bands, Rain and I'm Down would be their best material.

@@galoon I agree with you on your comment. The Beatles had the reputation here in the UK to have a 'B' side equally as good as the 'A' side under the musical direction from George Martin who is often referred to as the 5th Beatle. I remember Ringo Starr was asked in an interview about one of his favourite songs of the Beatles and he replied it was 'Rain'

Rubber Soul has always been my favorite. For some reason ‘I’m looking through you’ grabbed me and it just gets better from there. You are the first musician I have ever heard that gave it at least equal ground to revolver so thank you for that. I’m not a musician and therefore can only really on my ear and my heart. I know this album is very special to me.

For my money, Hard Days Night is the greatest: There's not one duff moment, all Lennon-McCartney originals and such dynamic performances. It never gets stale! Incidentally, I love Revolution 9! - I love the use of the last two unison orchestral notes from Sibelius Symphony 7, used 13 times ( I counted! ) - it's a magnificent nightmare which leads into the comfort blanket of Goodbye. I love Rev9!
@stevenleejobe
@stevenleejobe 10 ай бұрын
Exactly, exactly! *Hard days night* was their peak moment in terms of pure Fab Four. At that point, it was still primarily Lennon's band--his vision, his drive. If you're really gonna be serious about thinking in terms of albums--what they meant and how they functioned in the culture--Hard Day's Night was it.

100% agree Michael… whenever I try to explain the relevance of the Beatles to non-Beatles fans I keep trying to point out what you stated here. We’ve had phenomenons before, like Sinatra, and Elvis, and the teen idols but as Time moved on they were left behind stuck in their genre. For 10 years, the Beatles moved the needle. They evolved right before our eyes. It was pure Magic. wherever the Beatles were on the timeline. That’s where music was on the timeline. The Beatles are the gift that keeps on giving… They are living proof that there is a God or a higher power.

So fascinating to think that it was John's band, that Paul was introduced to & then Paul introducing George to John (Rock In Peace, gentlemen)... I especially love the songs on which you can clearly hear John & Paul both, & of course George. Speaking of George, his song "Something" was the song that Francis Albert Sinatra called the greatest love song ever written! Not bad, George! Not bad! 👍

Great video, man. Really enjoying the channel. The white album is the one lauded album by the Beatles that I’ve never really been able to connect with. I just find it too disjointed. However, I’ve recently found myself listening to Beatles for sale a lot recently, one of the albums I largely ignored for years. It gets a lot of stick, but I love their cover of Mr Moonlight - largely due to John’s raw vocal delivery. Maybe with time, the white album will just click. There’s a great live recording of The analogues covering the white album in its entirety on KZfaq. It’s brilliantly done and they incorporate all the studio effects . It’s uncanny to watch.

“Critters!,” “Algodemons” - Michael Noland signatures, everybody. Ha! Love it. Magnificent list. I especially appreciate Pepper not predictably hogging the number 1 spot. Rubber Soul is a great pick to top the list. It’s at that perfect mid-point sweet spot between the early energy and innocence of Beatlemania and the world-weary drugginess of the later years. As for top 2 desert island Beatle discs, that is always a tough and nebulous choice to make. Oh man. Right now, I’d say my all-time favorite Abbey Road and, to best represent an earlier period, A Hard Day’s Night (though I’d be real tempted to go with the White Album to cheat the system a bit - and also because I love it). Great work, as always!

Hi Michael...I'm new to your channel but I'm really enjoying the content. I'm not done watching this ranking video but I paused it to write my thoughts on albums that were recorded in less then 30 hours. And one that wasn't mentioned was Black Sabbath's debut album - Black Sabbath. It was recorded in 12 hours...live off the floor at Regent Sound (I believe) on 8 track...with 1 or 2 overdubs of lead guitar or percussion. Then the mix took another 12 hours. So a complete album in 24 hours. Great channel. ...now back to this video.

The problem I have with “ranking albums” by the Beatles is that if you put enough of their singles together you get probably the best double album of their career. In addition to that some of the Beatles singles of a few of their individual albums overshadow the album(Sgt Pepper vs Strawberry/Penny Lane). So I cry Au Contraire Mon Frare!

Michael, that's a good & very interesting ranking!! I would rank some similar & some very differently. "Beatles For Sale" always gets ranked lowly, & i can see why because half of the covers are quite poor. BUT the originals are SO good (both lyrically & musically), that i think it really lifts this album. Its a big step forward IMO. Who else ever came up with a catchy pop song in the style of "I Don't Want To Spoil The Party"? Top 3 for me: 1. Abbey Road 2. Sgt. Pepper 3. Rubber Soul Tiger.

When it was released, Rubber Soul was earthshaking and changed rock music forever. The same happened when Revolver was released, and then Sgt. Pepper's, and then Abbey Road. Those guys were on another plane of existence, and no one, I don't; care how many albums they sold, ever did that and did it four times. PS: Maybe Dylan going electric on one side of "Bringing it All Back Home" in 1965 was in that category, but the Byrds invented folk-rock in June of 1965 with Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man". Both of them were special, too.

A really good video and I agree with you on most of your album choices. My favourite however has been Abbey Road especially side 2 with the wonderful compilation of songs at the end. I have all the UK album releases and was a teenager when the Beatles became famous and I purchased all the singles and EP's they released 'Twist and Shout' followed by the double EP 'Magical Mystery Tour' which was the soundtrack which was made as a television release. The film was nowhere as good as 'Hard Days Night' or 'Help' that were released for the movies. Although 'Magical Mystery Tour' flopped as a film the music was great. I have since added some of the American releases of 'Hard Days Night' on United Artists and the 'Help' album on Capitol Records also a couple of double albums which are Japanese re- releases 'Rock and Roll Music' on Capitol Records and also the Beatles Ballads Capitol release. I quite like the re-released Beatles Abbey Road album and Yellow Submarine and the White album and more recently Revolver which Giles Martin has remixed. All fantastic albums to listen too with the technology of today. Thanks for your wonderful review.

Another great video. Really enjoying these. Yellow Submarine is definitely ranked number 13. I think the original plan had been to release the 4 new songs plus Across the Universe as an EP. I tend not to class this as a proper album. I think the Beatles progressed from album to album, especially in the first half of their career and so My ranking would be: 13. Yellow Submarine 12. Please Please Me (great album but what followed was even better). 11. With the Beatles 10. Beatles for Sale (ranked below the next album mainly for the 6 cover versions) 9. A Hard Days Night 8. Let It Be (should have included Don’t Let Me Down and cut out Dig It and Maggie Mae). 7. Help 6. Rubber Soul 5. Revolver 4. Abbey Road 3. The Beatles (White Album) 1/2. Another double album, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band / Magical Mystery Tour. Ok not an actual double album release but if it had been then surely it would be the greatest album in rock music history. Imagine songs like Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane, I Am the Walrus, All You Need is Love, Magical Mystery Tour all woven into a Sgt Pepper double album release for Xmas 1967. Especially if none of the tracks had been previously released as singles. Wow.

1. Rubber soul 2. Revolver 3. The white album 4. Abbey road 5. Let it be 6. Sgt Pepper 7. Magical mystery tour 8. Yellow submarine A bit iffy to include the last two albums since they are sort of compilation albums. The earlier stuff I will not rank since I don't have all of it and haven't listened enough to it. Though I like the beatles a lot and listen quite a lot to them these days I have understood that I don't qualify as a hard core fan. I have a bit of a problem with the granny songs which appear on many albums, like "when I'm 64'," maxwell's silver hammer", "Yellow submarine", "Obladi oblada" etc. It would have been great if they had swapped some of Paul's granny stuff for some of the awesome single material, like "Paperback writer'," Day tripper", "Rain" etc.

I was one of those teenagers who typically bought a Beatles album as soon as it was released. I think if I was picking two discs to take to that island, they would be Abbey Road and Sgt Pepper's. Thanks for your sharing your thoughts and wealth of information.

I agree with the list. Rubber Soul and Revolver #2 has always been my favorite LPs. The covers are my favorite as well. In fact, my first bands name? "Rebel Souls". Using Rubber Soul, and We were "Rebels" in our souls only... HA

Same as Zep you have to break down by early middle and Kate middle because end is jumbled because of internal problems Abby road and let it be are on the verge of the end , so for me it’s With the Beatles , then revolver then sergeant pepper . White album . As top four with honorable mention to rubber soul . Then a toss up between hard days night and Abby road with the nod to hard days night because of the energy level and good times . Number 1 is revolver in my book . So that’s as fair as I can be . Thanks for another great video .this time I gave u my list before I watched yours so not to be biased . Rock on

Good list. My list changes from time to time, but my current top 5 in descending order would be Rubber Soul, White Album, Sgt Pepper, Revolver, Abbey Road. Abbey Road just sounds so good and I feel like it set the tone for the next decade of classic rock. Let It Be also gets consideration for the great songwriting and influence it had on the 70s.

Being Born in 1962, The boys were the back drop to my life. from AM radio to FM radio from Mono to Stereo from a album of songs to a concept albums from ballroom dancing music to full blown take a trip into another universe and from childhood to pre teenage puberty. I can see your ratings and because of difference in taste I would rate the top 6 in this order. 6 being Magical Mystery Tour 5 White Album 4 Revolver 3 Rubber Soul 2 SGT Peppers 1 Abbey Road. To reach this order I think to an ear never hearing a recording by The Beatles and wishing to give that listener the true trip Abbey Road has no weak tracks. Side one Come Together, Something Silly songs like Maxwell a sample of the essences of rock n roll as only the Beatles could produce. Side two the best single side of a record ever. From the reassurance of Here comes the Sun to the Tribute ending the Queen and England a Masterpiece of epic Mixing and Story telling. Seeing Paul at Fenway 2 weeks ago playing side 2 of Abbey Road affirms his belief in this being the best of the band. God Bless and may I forever be thankful that I was born in the best time to grow up with the greatest band ever bar none. My love of the Who and John Entwistle Pete Townshend Moon and Daltry can only take a back seat to John Paul George and Ringo. Again a personal thanks to God for giving us The Beatles. RIP John and George, If you never got to hear or see the Goastt of the Saber Tooth Tiger John is not gone but lives on through Sean and if only for a single album with a few track release not on Midnight Sun a trip I am glad to have taken. Love your output and input to my brain from your channel. God Bless

One of the nice things about comments on social media is you get to share your opinion which may be quite different to others. I was born about the same time I Want To Hold Your Hand was released in the USA and I grew up in a house with Beatle music in it. I tripped out (listened to stared at) the Revolver album (cover) for hours as a kid and it's still probably my number 1, but retrospectively I really like Beatles For Sale. Yes it contains a few covers, but that is a like an homage to their origins as a band before they became world famous, and is indicative of those nitty gritty small venue shows in Hamburg and the UK. To me it's just pure honest rock and roll (songs like Kansas City). Then original songs like "I'll Follow the Sun" are just brilliant. So personally, my favorite Beatles songs are not likely to be on the "Greatest Hits" album with songs that get played over and over (Hey Jude, Let It Be) I've heard those enough for one lifetime, but I prefer the stuff that got a bit less airplay but still capture the Beatle magic.

Great list. I jotted down my order before watching to see how we compared. Agreed with your list except I placed Abbey Road at #3. Always thought Revolver and Rubber Soul were their best. Sometimes I think Revolver is better and then switch back to Rubber Soul as my #1. An embarrassment of riches! Thanks for a great video!

Sgt Pepper is the greatest album of all time. If you were there when it came out, no album had or has since had the same impact. I understand taking each album apart now , but I will never forget the intial response to Peppers.

Gonna have to disagree slightly with your analysis of Revolver. It's clear that Paul steps up to take a more commanding role in the band, especially with his song writing, but John is still the head master here. His contributions are not as eclectic but they are more sonic boom. More explosive and hypnotic. And they definitely rock harder. Also completely agree with your take on Let It Be. It's high on my ranking. Great video. Cheers from the Beatleverse.
