Christopher Nolan is one of my favorite directors of all time. With a very diverse and celebrated filmography and the release of his newest film, Tenet, it's now time to rank all of Christopher Nolan's movies.

Your feelings on The Dark Knight mirror mine on Halloween. Halloween is one of my favorite horror movies of all time, but I can't stand how its fans constantly devalue other slashers in their praise for it when there are some that I honestly like a little more than Halloween. So while I personally consider The Dark Knight a strong contender for the greatest comic book film of all time, I can definitely understand how its most ardent advocates can sour you somewhat towards it.

Always appreciate your POV, especially when it differs from my own because it makes me re-evaluate why I feel as I do. So glad to see Insomnia get the love! So underrated and underappreciated. I'm ALMOST there with you regarding Dark Knight vs Batman Begins, but while I love both so damn much (and agree about "brawler Batman"), Dark Knight as a whole just barely edges it out for me personally. Because of my ADHD I'm all over the place when it comes to sticking to channels, switching away, only to come back later to binge...so, I'm on my Cody Leach binge now, baby! While I disagree with the ranking - like you said in the beginning - that's part of being a movie fan and I love the honesty you bring to each and every review Cody! We can disagree about where films rank or the enjoyment factor all day long but respectful conversations is what being a film fan is about. I 100% agree with you there. With that being said, I rank films differently than most - I do objective rankings and then I do enjoyment rankings. I am a super diehard Nolan fan. Love every movie that he's created so my order isn't a reflection of the quality of the films - it's just where I would rank it. With that being said, These are my lists: Objective: 1) Inception - Like you said - this film is a beautiful blend of story, characters, concepts, action, ambiguity. 2) Dunkirk - While the story isn't at the forefront, I think this film is an absolute technical masterpiece as far as camera, sound, etc. 3) The Prestige - Great story with great twist. 4) TDK - Awesome action, great performances, love the ambition with great performances. I agree with Cody that it's become overrated and there are some conveniences in the storyline but I think it's still a fantastic film. 5) Memento - Fascinating story progression with great performances. 6) Interstellar - Emotional concept, love the performances and the theme of love. 7) Insomnia - Although it's not a story he wrote, I think the cinematography and directing here is masterful. 8) Batman Begins - great character arc for Bruce Wayne along with great performances despite action scenes being not that great the story is fantastic. 9) Tenet - While the film is confusing as shit I think the technical achievements here are absolutely brilliant. And I honestly would call this film very underrated too in a sense that people shit on this movie repeatedly and talk about it like it's a bad movie or it's the worst film ever made. No. Everyone has different tastes - you can say that the film is plot heavy versus character driven, you can talk not liking the the sound mixing - that's a subjective thing and that's fine. But you cannot deny that the technical side of TENET is groundbreaking. 10) TDKR - Great action scenes, fantastic ambition, and despite there being a lotta holes in the story - I agree - I still think it's a great film. 11) Following - I think the story is fascinating but because of the budget constraints it's just not as good on a technical level as the rest of these films. Not this films fault - just the predicament of what he had to work with. Enjoyment: 1) Tenet - I love the action sequences and just gush at it every time I watch it and how unique they are with the time inversion stuff. 2) Inception - same as Tenet where the action sequences just enamor me 3) TDK - Love watching Heath Ledger, god rest his soul. 4) Batman Begins - Love the character arc of Batman here. 5) The Prestige - The performances between Bale and Jackman 6) Interstellar - The galactic sequences are just mesmerizing. 7) TDKR - Love watching the action sequences. 8) Insomnia - Love the performances and cinematography but since it's a slower burn movie that's why it's number 8 for me from an enjoyment perspective. 9) Memento - I agree with Cody that it's not the most rewatchable film. It's a fantastic film but not necessarily rewatchable. 10) Dunkirk - While I think, objectively, this is a masterpiece as far as the filmmaking technicals and what not I'm also not really a war movie guy, hence it's down here in enjoyment. But with that being said, I still love this film. 11) Following - again a fascinating story but because of the budgetary constraints it's not really a movie I go back to watch again and again despite me liking the film.

I love the fact that I disagree with you so much lol, you have your explainations and I totally understand them. Heres mine ranking tho 11. Insomnia - I still think it is great, the central conflict is done pretty well, but to the point where it carries the film and it's the main emotional affection. The genre it explores was pretty over done to me in the late 90s and when you subtract Al Pacino's character, it's just alright. Although I love how it approves the technical sides of Nolan, it's beauitfully shot and has a great score. 10. Batman Begins - Always was my least favourite of the trilogy, but it did so much right. The sheer world building of Gotham and the casting, it's so perfect. I love Bruce Wayne's kind of becoming a hero and I think it peaks in the second act as it is some of the best Batman action thats been there, but here comes my main problem, I think it doesnt balance the tones of that with some other sub plots, mainly surrounding the villains. Scarecrow's gas thing leans too much into the fantastical when we have this grounded established world, and the whole League of Shadows thing never really mashed well with the Batman arc that well, so I just feel all 3 acts are different tonally. Especially the thrid act, it goes kinda too silly 9. The Prestige - I swear Im not doing it because these are at your top 😹 it's just my ranking. The Prestige kinda grew off me, I think it's a great story, with a great subliminal theme of filmmaing mirroring the magical illusions, but it feels like it's ambition at the end doesnt quite match the film. The themes of detirmination pay off great, it's the one about the audience wanting to be fooled that really dont go the best for me. It's like, whole plot lines of the film go to being unnecessary, like the whole sci fi aspect, aka the Tesla machine, it's just introduced to show how big of a loser Hugh Jackman's character is? 💀 I really dont know about the theme of lying to the people going along with the self respect in the sacrafice. Still a really great film and showed the diversity of Nolan 8. Tenet - Great film to watch at the cinema after whole few months. The cinematographty, action and music are all incredible. The story I think faults a little, as it's done better by previous Nolan film. This is the only case where the critism 'it's too confusing for the sake of it' of him fits, as the plot is simple, it's just being hidden for I guess more confusion idk. Also a weak 😹protaganist😹Great take at the James Bond vibes tho, especially Kenneth Brannagh's villain 7. Following - I was suprised at how much I loved this. I think it's an amazing early scenario that feels like him, the few characters story mystery was a great exploration of the idea of the psychology of people and how we are living over lies. Dont have that much problems with the technical sides because he wanted to do a noir esque film, and he did 6. Interstellar - I feel this is his most under appriciated. It's definately his most depressing, although all of his films are serious, this feels drowned, cold, miserable. The character relations are great and the theme goes along well. The technicalities are again incredible. The plotline about the earth being re-colonized and the whole Mat Damon thing was really under udelised for me, and the robot assistaint added an unnecessary goofiness to this other wise serious movie. Overall, his most eligant and relatable film, with great performances and pay off 5. The Dark Knight Rises - Never got the hate for this one. Always had it over Batman Begins and thought it's an absolutely excellent conclusion. The Bruce Wayne character arc in this one is my favourite, he accepts the duty for the greater good. Bane is an absolute scene stealer, amazing antagonist. But yea, some things in the screenplay happen just because. Oh dont forget the action scenes, best of the trilogy 4. Memento - His first masterpiece. Theres not more to be told about the mechanism of his story telling in this one, totally game changing. Great idealogy showcase of self perception. If I had to point out problems, the side characters feel a bit too mean spirited, and the music feels a bit too generic 3. Dunkirk - Truly epic. I've seen many people say it takes the specticle over character, but that was what he wanted with this one. He wanted to present the collective experience, that in my opinion, is done also through the given characters, who execute the heroism all of us have inside. No need for comment on the technical aspects, brilliance. Not a single shot that isnt gorgeous. Performances are all spot on. Although the main boy thats basically getting us through the story is kinda uninteresting, would have rather Harry Styles's character to be the introduction 2. Inception - Possibly the most complex film I've ever seen. Theres so much on the story, theres the idea of exploring dreams, the philosophical subjectivism, the guilt that our subconsciousness carries, the love letter to cinema, the idea that dreams are cinema😭all executed perfectly with the perfect cast 1. The Dark Knight - Yea sorry but I cant imagine not adoring this one. It's not only that it's a comic book movie and that it has crime drama elements, it has subliminal themes that it deals with perfectly. The reason I have it over Inception, is that Inception is an openly philosophical film, while TDK is a genre blockbuster that has the same amount of complexity. It represents duality, the fragility of morality, the fact that our lives are built on lies - possibly Nolans most used theme, and even philosophical nihilism, embodied by Heath Ledger's excellent transformation. It also serves as a post 9/11 political thriller, and raises questions for the trust we have in our governments, ALL THIS while it gives us a great conflict between 3 sides of a troubled city with great action scenes and dialogue. Sorry if it's too long or not enough lol, love you Cody😃

I totally get where you're coming from with your one/two ranking, but The Prestige is one of my absolute favorite movies. For me, the performances and the depth of the emotion in the story carries more rewatch value than Inception does. The Prestige is one of those movies that I put on just to have in the background and don't look away for two hours.

I think if nothing else, tonally, Memento is wonderful and for that reason goes very high on my list. And as for the storyline being told chronologically not being interesting, I don't know if you've seen that version, but it actually makes for an interesting watch, as you're more so seeing the story through the other characters' eyes

Very interesting ranking, i really like how brutally honest, unbias and genuine your opinions were. I find it interesting how not everyone agrees with which nolan movie is the best/worst and can create discussions among people and nolan's fans among his films. I do respectfully disagree with memento and the dark knight in their placements, but i do agree with you, up to a point, on how alot of fans overglory the dark knight as the greatest superhero movie of all time. The Dark knight is my favorite live action superhero movie and Christopher nolan's best film, and while i don't think the movie is overrated as you say it is, i can see how it can irritate you and other people constantly hearing the fanboys say the dark knight is better than every other comic book movie or just movie in existence when there are other superhero movies that are near the same level as the dark knight and there's other movies are better than the dark knight. That said though, i still love the dark knight and i respectfully disagree with your ranking and I've never had the experience of being irritated by its fans holding it on a near unreachable status. I also disagree with Memento being not very rewatchable, i watched it 7 times this month and i still find the movie captivating and a chilling experience to watch, i go back and forth between whether Memento or The Dark Knight is his best movie! I'm gonna watch Inception in the near future as that's also an extremely well made movie and the only other movie i would consider nolan's masterpiece, the rest are great to good, but not masterpieces.

Interstellar (Love all the sci fi elements in the movie, acting, and visuals) 4. Memento (Hard to explain... but I agree about the rewatch factor being low) 3. Insomnia (Actually forgot this was a Christopher Nolan film but the movie really stuck with me just after only 1 viewing years ago) 2. The Dark Knight 1. Inception (This goes for both 1 and 2: I could watch these movies over and over again. Everything about these movies are great!)

Surprised me right off the bat with Dunkirk coming in so low; I don’t love it myself - it plays more like Battlefield: The Movie with everything in miniature - but would still rank it a little higher. (Will say more later, when you do your actual review - same goes for Interstellar.) I incidentally share your love for Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, though not for The Patriot. Haven’t had a chance to see Tenet yet, though I hope to do so soon; its reviews haven’t been quite as good as Nolan is used to getting, but then Interstellar also didn’t get too many great notices either so I’m still hopeful. Your top two weren’t a surprise, nor was the order in which you put them; I wasn’t really sure about the rest, though I would probably have expected The Dark Knight to fare just a bit better, and Insomnia to do less well. My own ranking would probably be as follows (I’m very confident in my top two and bottom two choices, while the rest are all pretty close to each other): 1. Interstellar (2014): Nolan’s fans often claim that he manages to combine successfully the cerebral with the emotional and the exciting, and this film is one of those times that I agree; it reminds me a little of Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival, and both of these films placed on my top ten movies of the last decade 2. Memento (2000): the chronological jumbling is more than just a gimmick here, and the questions it raises are genuinely interesting (I even got a pretty good paper out of them back in the day!) 3. Inception (2010): superb action sequences more than make up for the excessive exposition in the first hour 4. The Prestige (2006): the plot twists don’t really make sense in hindsight, which says a lot about the strengths of the rest of the film that it remains so enjoyable 5. The Dark Knight Trilogy (2005-2012): yes, I’m combining them all here as they share similar strengths and faults 6. Dunkirk (2017): recreates the tension & sense of helplessness of the men waiting to be taken off the beaches, but I wanted more from it 7. Following (1998): a little rough, as you’d expect, but still enjoyed it and you can see the beginnings of Nolan’s work 8. Insomnia (2002): a bit strained and unconvincing (I just didn’t buy the actions of Pacino’s character), but some good stuff there too (haven’t seen the Norwegian original; maybe it’s a bit better); I might give it another try, given how highly you placed it here Glad to see you mention Death to Smoochy here too: it’s uneven as Hell, but the cookie-in-the-bag scene with Williams and Norton makes the movie worth a watch all by itself. At least we're a bit closer in this list than in the Tarantino ranking (though that's not saying much in itself!); looking forward to seeing what you have to say about the two remaining Nolan films . . .
