depression cherry was the greatest album of the decade in my opinion, when i think of 2010- 2020 its hard to think of another artist who made a better album.

Devotion is definitely my favorite by them. It is so raw sounding and one of the most perfect albums I've ever heard.

Depression Cherry was my intro to Beach House. Space Song and PPP had me hypnotized. I still have yet to hear Bloom, Beach House and Devotion. I'm sure I'll love them all.

Devotion is amazing. It builds on their debut and adds a lot more. Heart of chambers is a standout track and I think you underrated the album. All in all BH is amazing!

For me, there's more variety going on in TYLS that all the others. I mean, if you focus on the instrumentation and movements in each of the songs, there's just so much interest there. Agree, takes multiple listens. Also agree, "One Thing" and "Somewhere Tonight" are contemporary versions of good deep oldies that were probably never played much, much less now. I found them refreshing and nostalgic at the same time. "Elegy To the Void" is probably on my top 5 BH songs.

Loved this video! Here’s my ranking: 1. Bloom Definitly their best imo, songwriting is just so solid. Not much to say other than I love this album. It feels like the musical equivalent to moonlight 2. Once Twice Melody Love all the experimentation on here, this one picks up where seven left off and has sone of their most angelic music to date. Was skeptical of it being released in chapters but it worked out in the end and I was just blown away by this one, especially by the first four songs 3. Teen Dream This is my personal favorite, this is their best album from their more rock leaning early days and Definitly deserves the pedestal that the indie world has given it. While bloom is like the musical equivalent of moonlight, this one is sunlight. Though not everything is sunshine and rainbows on here, beneath the beautiful pop Melodys there’s a lingering bitter sweetness to this album that I can’t get enough of. Just super solid essential listening album 4. 7 This one is just so fantastic, it’s super mystical and mysterious and feels like a dark ocean I just can keep diving deeper and deeper into and never reach the bottom, yet I never wanna stop immersing myself in it’s waters 5. Thank Your Lucky Stars Though Devotion was my introduction, this is the album that made me fall in love with them. Love the old fashioned style that pops more on here and the callbacks to their older sound. Imo this deserves all the attention depression Cherry got and if it wasn’t a surprise album it would have been held much higher than depression Cherry because to me this one has more solid songwriting. This is like something you’d find in an attic, and it has the warmth of a distant memory in the midst of a cold winter night. 6. Beach House. What a great entrance they made, love the lofi production and the songwriting on this one is so strong. As you pointed out very tropical and almost old timey at times and to me at some parts I picked up on sone almost carnivally sounding instrumentals, making me think of a boardwalk carousel. It really feels like the treasure depicted on the cover 7. Depression Cherry. This ones definitly a grower, when I first heard it I really disliked it but it really grew on me and I LOVE IT. It starts out very spacey but later on takes almost a Christmasy wintery feel to the music, especially on PPP. Super great album but I always find myself feeling like it’s missing something, like it didn’t reach its full potential and I do personally find it a tad bit overrated. 8. Devotion. It caused me physical pain to rank this one last because I love this album, it’s so sweet and it’s such a cozy album and if I had a boyfriend this would be a great album to cuddle to. I rank it last because a lot of it feels like less well executed versions of what they did on their debut and the cleaner production ultimately harms the album in sone places but I’d be lying if I said this isnt one of my most spun beach house albums.

Bloom > Depression Cherry

A+ ---- Bloom Built upon the new power they released in Teen Dream while also surrounding the songs with even more stunning, sublime soundscapes. Standout Tracks: On the Sea (Victoria Legrand's piano and Joe Cueto's viola sound like a miniature orchestra conducting a waltz for the end of the world) and "Irene" (Alex Scally's guitar at its most intense!) A ----- Depression Cherry & Thank Your Lucky Stars "Levitation" is Beach House's best opening track as it just keeps lifting the listener higher. "Days of Candy" is a colorful psychedelic closing track (the choir creates deeply spiritual vibes). "Space Song" is hypnotic. "Wildflower" is pastoral. The rest of the album is weaker than Bloom. Although the first side of TLYS is weaker material and would initially lower it to B, on the second side of the album "The Traveller" and "Elegy to the Void" express an epic spaciousness, "Rough Song" contains mysterious textures, and "Somewhere Tonight" is a cinematic, romantic, timeless closing track that could have been recorded during the 1950s/1960s. B --- Teen Dream & 7 It probably initially seems blasphemous to rank Teen Dream at B because it remains one of their most popular, but apart from the heartbreaking lost love "Walk in the Park", I do not find myself replaying this album as much. The lyrics/vocals from Victoria are quite emotional, but the instrumentation is not as compelling and strong for me as it would be on future albums. "Dark Spring" and "Last Ride" are an energetic opener/closer, the cathedral chants and French poetry in "L'Inconnue" are unique, and "Lose Your Smile" is beautifully breezy. However, 7's darker, edgier risk taking can sometimes be more distracting than intriguing to me ("Lemon Glow", "Drunk in LA", "Black Car", etc.) C -- Devotion & Beach House There are a few memorable moments on the band's debut and follow-up ("Saltwater", "Apple Orchard", "Gila") but the fact that most of the songs are not as distinguishable from one another and the production is so muted, sleepy, spare (the duo were just beginning to develop as a band) is why I rank these the lowest.

Teen Dream in the chronological sense was such a watershed moment. They went from this quirky dim-lit sound to this bedazzling hi-fi sound. It was breathtaking at the time. If you felt that you’d heard their potential in those early records, you were well and truly rewarded because after Teen Dream, they just exploded in popularity and for good reason.

One of my favorite things about Beach House fan is how varied fan's rankings of the albums are. Me personally? A+ tier: Bloom, Depression Cherry A tier: Teen Dream, 7 B tier: Thank Your Lucky Stars C tier: Devotion D tier: Beach House Though it physically hurts to put any Beach House album below a B for me.

Thank Your Lucky Stars definitely takes some getting used to. Teen Dream is probably my favorite. Seven and Bloom are amazing as well as Depression Cherry. Those four albums are so hard for me to rank. Depression Cherry took me a few listens to really enjoy but it was easier on the ears than Thank Your Lucky Stars. You should do a ranking of Warpaint! They don't have many albums, though. Just three albums and an EP. But they're really amazing. Their live performances are so good, too.

From the moment I heard "Zebra" in around 2013, I was hugely attracted to their sound. All these years later, and they're definitely a top 10 band of all time for me. Thanks for your thoughts! Could not disagree more about 7, which was a good effort and an exercise in experimentation, but also a regrettable departure from their usual sound and style. Lemon Glow stands out to me as a low point not just for the album, but for their career. I'm glad it has a following of it's own, but it's an obnoxious song, which is not a word I want to use in relation to Beach House. I urge you to revisit TYLS and 7, and you maybe you'll find they sit better in quite different rankings.

Beach House is such a consistent band, that even their weaker albums are still really good in my opinion. I still haven't listened to Teen Dream, Devotion, or Thank Your Lucky Stars, but my ranking from what I've listened to so far would be 1. 7 This was the album that got me into Beach House in the first place, so I might be a little biased towards it, but I love the variety of different sounds and vibes on it. 2. Bloom It's just beautiful song after beautiful song. Myth is probably my favorite Beach House song 3. Beach House I recently got the CD for this one. It's a lot more lofi and laidback than their later stuff, but I think it certain dreamy, innocent sweetness to it that I really like. It feels like a daydream to me. 4. Depression Cherry This album has some songs that I really love like Space Song and Levitation, but some of the songs feel kind of forgettable to me. 5. Once Twice Melody I think there's a lot of nice songs on here, but with it being well over an hour long, I feel like it gets kind of monotonous after a while. And not much on it really grabs me emotionally like a lot of their previous music has.

The clarity and magnitude of the vocals on Teen Dream separate it from the rest of the pack- they haven't been that daring before or since, save for a few moments on Bloom.

Depression cherry is a masterpiece however my best friend died last year when i was heavily listening to it so it's a bit difficult to listen to now. bluebird is the best song they have ever written in my opinion

Why did you leave out B-Sides and Rarities?

I had never met someone who liked Beach House and also Deftones haha yes, I LOVE music with a lot of atmosphere! Personally. I REALLY LOVE BLOOM. It helped me a lot through the hell 2020 was. The first times I listened it I thought Lazuli was out of place and didn't love it but the more I listened to it, the more it seemed a beautiful song, now I love it too like the entire album! And sorry to anyone if I misspelled something, English isn't my native language (but it's a work in progress!)
