For me, Slafkovsky is above Lafrenière. 50 points at 19 while Lafrenière did it for the first time at 22 in a much better team than Slaf. Slaf just learned how to play with his body and his style here in NA. Just wait till he's 24-25... For me, he's higher than Laf because I think he can bring more to the game than just flashy skills, even though for a guy his size, he has a lot of skills.

@brileywing8136 Ай бұрын
I actually think I agree with you but part of being on a better team means early in his career laf REALLY had to fight for minutes in the lineup so it’s not all that much of an advantage but you do have a point about slaf doing more while still younger
@Emotionless0000
@Emotionless0000 Ай бұрын
@@brileywing8136 Yeah I also thought about that, but that also means he's playing with pretty good players. Montreal has 1 line right now, especially since Dach missed the entire season and Newhook missed almost 30 games. Slaf also started the season on the 3rd line if I remember correctly. He started playing with Suzuki and Caufield in like november/december and that's when he started to level up his game! By the way, Celebrini look like a really good player. I watched the games at the dev camp.

Ekblad is in interesting case. In his first two seasons, the dude looked like he was going to be the real deal. Wins the Calder as an 18 year old defenseman and builds on his talent his sophomore season. Then takes three concussions the next year. One during the World Cup and then two during the regular season, the second, being worse because he was rushed back after taking the first (Tom Rowe will always be in our hall of infamy for that). As such, his play for the next couple of seasons is solid, but not at the level we expected. Then in 2021 he looks like he took the next step. He’s contending for the Norris, he is a force for us offensively and defensively… And he suffered a freakish and brutal leg injury and we lose him for the season. Not to worry, because he hits his stride the following year and continues to look like a contender for the Norris… Only to suffer a broken ankle after colliding with a teammate. After that, he never really returns to that level of play. He suffers another bad foot injury during our cup run in 23 and at this point, the injuries have added up and he’s not the same player anymore. Fortunately, he’s adjusted his game to be more of a stalwart defensively but at times it looks like he’s laboring out there. I honestly don’t think he’ll play too much longer. He’ll retire in his early 30s which is sad because he was looking like he was going to be a fantastic player for us early on. But these things are part of the game. The luck of avoiding debilitating injuries plays a big role in these guys success as much as anything else. Fortunately Forsling has stepped up big for us and has blossomed into a bonafide 1dman for us.
@stefan0607
@stefan0607 Ай бұрын
Sums it up pretty perfectly really. His skating wasn't ever his strongest asset to begin with, but all the injuries over the years have taken their toll and it's made him a little bit of a liability when he pinches. He could of and likely would of been a lot higher up this list without those setbacks. As you said, he's done his best to modify his game to suit his current abilities, but like you I think he'll retire earlier than he otherwise would of had to without the injuries. It was great to see him lift the cup and I think he was really deserving of it, despite his drop off the past couple seasons. Now it'll be interesting to see what he does to finish off his career. I hope he realises his current worth and is happy with the money he has made and takes a team friendly contract. I'd love to see him retire a Panther but equally I can see him wanting too much and leaving at the end of his term next year. Going somewhere else who are willing to pay for that veteran cup winning experience.

Lol. You are trying to make it sound like he was an elite talent who was ruined by injuries. That is definitely not the case. Sure, injuries have had an effect on his career, but at no point he looked like a true elite Dman. He was always good. But not elite.
@stefan0607
@stefan0607 Ай бұрын
@@MillaQ9999 There were a couple of seasons where he pretty much was playing at "elite" level. I'm not saying he would of necessarily held on to that consistently year in year out, but he was on course to be a strong contender for the Norris in a couple of those seasons before injuries. That, and less of a drop off since his last couple leg injuries and I'd say it easily would of moved him above Slafkovsky, Laf and Hischier on this list.

He won't be a Makinnon, McDavid, or Bedard but I see him as a Toews with a little less defense and more offense. Hischier is just not that.

That may be so but I think Shane is going to be just fine. Going fourth overall will be a good one. Montreal got a super competitive winger which is what they needed. And Shane Wright was dominant in his call-up at the end of the last season with 9 points in 10 games. Both kids are going to be just fine.
@lauig
@lauig Ай бұрын
@@wolfdreams1545 The whole group of forwards the Kraken has been cooking up is nothing to be frown upon. They took with Wright the time Montreal would have liked to take with Slaf, MTL being a much worse team at the time did allow for him to taste the NHL sooner than Shane, which also accelerated his development. I still think Slaf is the better player overall (not by that much tho) and maybe more suited for serious playoff contention down the line, but Seattle will definitely become one of, if not The, most entertaining team to watch very soon with this group of kids having a ton of skills to their name.

Very interesting exercise, yet another top one from you Johnny ! Loved it. I would have done the switch between Lafreniere & Slaf, simply cause in spite of Lafrenière most likely racking up more points and having been truly special in those weeks you mentioned or in the playoffs, after that initial tutelage from Suzuki, Slaf has picked up that torch to become on his own a freakin motor in turning this still very rough team into a soon-to-be contender which is the very hardest thing to do in the NHL at such a young age. Lafrenière to me still looks more of the type to finish elevating a team that's already getting good, or truly Elite in that very Rangers case. (I'd say the same thing i mentioned of Slaf for Sasha Barkov vs ... well pretty much anyone not named Connor McDavid actually ahah). Loved also that you then highlighted Hischier for a similar thing as well, he makes everyone around him better, even guys who aren't used to playing on his line.

Kind of weird to hear Power's comparison to Ekholm and Ekblad as "non-game changers" when both players were key defensive pieces on Stanley cup final teams. Specifically Ekholm has been game changing for the Oilers since he got there. Sure, they are not $8M+ two-way talents but it's sort of apparent that winning teams need this type of defenseman on their roster while Vancouver, and Dallas couldn't get it done with stars like Hughes and Heiskanen against Edmonton this year. It was often Ekblad that shut down the Oilers at the most critical moments, just holding the puck to the boards running the clock down.

@mNag
@mNag Ай бұрын
"He's tracking to be about as good as RNH." They are nowhere near the same player. Nuge is strong utility player with about very good 2nd line, average 1st line offensive upside. Where as Bedard is tracking as a franchise forward who drives offense. He might not ever get to the same level as McDavid, maybe not even MacKinnon. But he's gonna be the best 1st overall since Matthews for sure. If you track guys who are more undersized forwards like Point, Marchand, Gaudreau, Zucarello, Hughes or Marchessault, they almost always all peak after they get into their 20s. So give him time. I think guys like that benefit more from packing on muscle mass and learning the ropes of the NHL than the 6'-6'3" guys do. The only guy I can remember in recent history who blew the roof off the NHL in his rookie season as an undersized player was P. Kane. And Patrick Kane had the advantage of falling onto a team that already had Toews, Sharp, Keith and Seabrook. Bedard's supporting cast is ass.

Not even close. Makar won the Avs that cup. He got the Conn Smythe after all. Makar would win a cup on the Oilers. MacKinnon? Nope. MacKinnon would not even be 100 point player on the Oilers. In fact, I think MacKinnon would have been ruined on the Oilers as MacKinnon struggled until his 5th season on the Avs. The Oilers would have turned him into Yakupov.

Ranking McKinnon lower than McDavid is absolute madness. The guy doesn't carry himself nearly as well in the playoffs, and trying to chop people's heads off, making it look like an accident, has really made McDavid look like a fool not worthy of the crown. To counter your argument, I'd say the Oilers would have that cup today if they had McKinnon instead.

@@brendan2533 Intangibles in hockey are the things that dont show up on stat sheets, or can be measured. These are attributes like, but not limited to: heart, grit, toughness, leadership, fire, drive, willingness to engage physically etc. This is not to say that McDavid doesnt have these things, its just Mack has them in spades and has more of them. On a 10 point scale of intangibles with a 1 being Marner and 10 being Tkachuk. McDavid would be a 5 and Mack would be a 7 or 8. Essentially, Mack is closer to a Tkachuk type player than McDavid is. Those sorts of intangibles. If you would like to know more, a quick google search of hockey intangibles will allow you to understand it more.
