It’s been over a year since BoJack Horseman ended and I was mulling over different ways to celebrate the show. I did that live stream which was a ton of fun, but we mostly talked about the finale and legacy of the show. I don’t think I’m quite ready for a full blown retrospective, and I’ve already reviewed every season. But I was inspired by the mad lad himself LS Mark who made this absolutely deranged 6 hour video ranking every episode of The Simpsons, and decided this would be a perfect way to be able to briefly talk about every damn episode of BoJack Horseman one more time.

He wasn't redeemed, tho. Him not dying wasn't about redemption, it was about consequences. If he died, sure he would have faced "the ultimate consequence" in death, but he wouldn't have to DEAL with it. The entire show, Bojack constantly gets away with HORRENDOUS acts with little more than his guilt. Him going to prison and living to hear all his friends tell him they still don't forgive him is why he survived. It was so therapeutic to hear the characters tell Bojack that they're happy he's alive yet don't want to be friends with him anymore, wishing him the best from a distance. All his destructive behavior had consequences, but the whole show it was the other characters who had to deal with those consequences. Sarah Lynn's overdose, Penny and Gina's PTSD, yet all Bojack got was Guilt, and his close support system would only real slap him on the wrist. Seeing the support system say "We want you to be better, but we can't keep being there for you" was a very real and human moment.

Ever heard of the theory that Bojack did die and how "Nice While It Lasted" was essentially Bojack's view from halfway down and closure as he imagines how everyone's life would happily go on without him while he regrets not giving his friends a proper goodbye? All this being connected by the heartbeat monitor at the credits of "The View From Halfway Down" and the heart beat monitor at the very start of "Nice While It Lasted" stopped at the rooftop scene, which meant he finally died at the end of the episode.
@mhb7509
@mhb7509 3 жыл бұрын
@@amityisprecious1334 yeah maybe... but then again saying it's "his view from halfway down" would be kinda contradictory because that moment for secreteriat is anything but peaceful and resolute it's on the contrary about making a point that even the ones who think they're ready aren't and I think it would be wierd to make a whole episode where the dead express their regrets and how unpredictable and unfair death is to then give bojack, who's always had his karma, a closure episode. But on the other hand i guess since the view from halfway down (the episode) is just bojack's imagination the right thought process to remember is that of bojack in two episodes instead of secreteriat's in the poem. And then he still wouldn't have gone entirely at peace because of the conversation with diane where she says how bad the phonecall affected her and if he actually died that's even worse. But the message is still really different in the 2 scenarios. I wonder what they meant... Anyways I spent too much time in english lit

I really do enjoy it, it just feels the most antithetical to what the show would eventually become; everything felt like a distraction from the real meat (the flashbacks to BoJack's childhood) whereas the show would later gain a reputation for bringing you face to face with the things you'd rather distract yourself from, or at least that BoJack would rather distract himself from.

I remember when Todd's "I think I might be nothing" line aired. I was just getting into the show, and a few asexual groups I was in on Facebook were latching onto the line, hoping and praying it would lead to canon ace rep. As someone who had gone through this kind of thing before, I wasn't going to get my hopes up. If Todd was ace, great, and if he wasn't, that was fine too, the show was already one of my favourites. And then they actually said the word. And they introduced other asexuals. And showed the colours of the flag on the meet up sign. It occurred to me when watching all of this that I'd never actually heard the words "I'm asexual" on a TV show before. It made me so unexpectedly happy, and still does even after however many rewatches. The bojack horseman team did more to give us asexual representation than any other show I've seen so far, and I will never not love the show for that.

I remember when I first watched escape from LA, I was 16 so just a year shy of Penny's age and while we are not that similar, I understood why she'd find comfort in a relationship with BoJack. I understood it was terrible, but I resonated with how she wanted to be treated like an adult and BoJack spoke to her like an equal. I didn't ship them, I just understood it. Then when I rewatched it as a 22 year old, I could clearly see how BoJack was not acting his own age and how creepy it was for him to go to prom with a bunch of teenagers. He didn't speak to Penny like an equal because he respected her that much, his own emotional maturity is just stunted. These things that didn't seem strange to me at first became obvious when I was a bit older. It proved that Penny really didn't understand what she was getting into with BoJack, because at her age, I didn't understand it fully. That difference in perspective really hit me when I thought about it.

It's interesting how most of the trauma in Bojacks family can be traced back to Crackerjack's death in one way or another. And how it doesn't get remarked on. Not least because he was one of millions, and how much other trauma must be out there because of the war even generations later.
@Goomyx1492
@Goomyx1492 3 жыл бұрын
It really shows how much of a snowball effect trauma can have. From Crackerjack to Honey Sugarman to Beatrice to Bojack and then to Hollyhock (and others). It's tough because people causing trauma for others are also often just victims of trauma themselves. It's kind of all of their fault and none of their fault at the same time. It just shows why mental health support is so incredibly important, and unfortunately under-emphasized in the world.

I think Bojack himself does not realize the connection directly, but they do allude to it constantly with how Crackerjack and his death was such a huge influence on Beatrice and how that trauma in her family affected her raising of Bojack, continuing the line of trauma. It is brought more prominently to the front in The View From Halfway Down when Crackerjack is one of the dinner guests at the table in Bojack's dream. Crackerjack talks about the sacrifice of war and Bojack calls attention to its pointlessness, overall. I believe they are making a commentary about how one young man in millions lost his life (seemingly insignificant), but all the roots of this family trauma can be tied back to this one tragedy.

I first began watching BoJack a couple of months after being dumped by a guy who I had been head over heels for. He had broken up with me via Facebook messenger at 2 a.m. a week after I had been diagnosed with clinical anxiety, and I was still harbouring feelings for him. I binged the first two series over a few days and the red flag line hit me like a semi truck. It made me realise that I had to move on because I'd been looking at the guy through rose-coloured glasses-even he himself had admitted that he was a terrible boyfriend.

I read Cuddlywhiskers's line about giving everything up in a completely different way. When he says that you must give everything up to be happy, the view cuts back and shows his gorgeous property where he can be at peace. It's an interesting commentary on what giving up everything actually means when Cuddlywhiskers is still rich and lives in such a wonderful place.

My favorite thing about Bojack has, and always will be, the fact that it reels you in with comedic and zany situations and, just completely out of nowhere, the jokes slow down and take a backseat and it morphs into a full-blown drama, but by the time you realize that, it's already too late. You're hooked, and you can't stop watching. Not because it's funny and entertaining, but because you care about these silly people with animal heads, and want to see them succeed. Even the ones who are obviously not good people.

Something I’m learning from watching the series a second time is how princess Carolyn and Diane are completely codependent on bojack’s chaos. They both have their own arcs learning how to get over him, have boundaries, and just make their own lives better. It reads so genuine. It makes me wonder what the creators’ relationship to addiction is.
@bluesira
@bluesira 2 жыл бұрын
It is an excellent portrayal of the toxic relationship between codependents and narcissists. The previous needs to feel needed and like they are wanted and part of something bigger, while the latter craves attention and someone to fawn over their troubles. So the Bojacks of the world attract the Princess Carolyns and Dianes of the world, while those two subconsciously seek out the Bojacks of the world. It's a vicious cycle.

STRONG disagree on The Kidney Stays in the Picture. The episode plays off Todd's insecurities and delves so far into his childhood in such an amazing way. For most of the early series Todd didn't have confidence. He avoided talking about himself and when he did he was defensive or self deprecating. In season 5 Todd starts finally appreciating his own life direction, aimless as it may be. Jorge opens up all of those old insecurities again, and shows us how Todd lost all of his motivation in his childhood. Showing Todd struggle with his past relations was honestly a beautiful way of finishing his arc.

@@fecomate2542 Actually I usually hate comic relief characters, because they’re so flat, so I love when they give them depth. I don’t know if you know Breaking Bad, but they made a whole spin-off show (Better Call Saul), just to give the comic relief character depth and it is FANTASTIC. Even better than the original show in my opinion, so I love when they make flat comical characters round.

I love the symbolism behind the flashbacks revealing the origins of Bojack’s drinking because each time, it shows someone else pressuring him into drinking at an earlier and earlier age, suggesting it was his career, or his friendships, or his father, but ultimately the first time he drank was entirely his choice. Kind of hammers home how at the end of the day, while the rest of the world around him sucked, he made the choice

Whoah. That is not the point at all. They are not blaming bojack for choosing to drink to be closer to his parents as a small child. His parents are absolutely responsible for how he turned out. He is absolutely responsible for his actions as a young adult and older adult. We are not responsible for our trauma but we are responsible for what we do about it. We don't judge people for simply choosing to drink, we judge them for how they end up hurting themselves and other ppl in the process of being addicted. We should not judge people for seeking solace in the wrong place, it is something everyone is vulnerable to.

the chicken episode is a truly good commentary about factory farming and the moral dilemma of eating animals, the power of advertisiments over facts, food industry in general, and so many other subjects. its a shame everyone seems to mock a great episode just because they dont want to acknowledge taking part in hurting animals. it tells something about ”ThE sOciEtY” that an animal rights themed episode is the only episode people actively hate, in a series like bojack where there are so much hard to swallow pills and difficult, painful themes in every season. people are ready and willing to talk about almost any other subject as long as its not animal rights.

@matrasman

The extreme cognitive dissonance people seem to have with where food comes from, absolute insanity. So many people I know will eat (factory farmed) meat three times a day but as soon as they are confronted with how their deli meat came to be they get furious all of a sudden, and not at the meat industry, but at activists and vegetarians. They will say how they can't watch all that cruelty, how it is stomach-turning, that you are a bad person for making them feel that way, and then right away they turn off all sense of guilt and morality and keep stuffing their face with meat. Absolute clownery lol. Even if you're not a vegetarian or an activist but just make a statement about factory farming being terrible in every aspect and maybe not eat meat 3 times a day people will get super mad at you because apparently their identity hinges on consumption of animals. So yeah I really appreciate the chicken episode precisely because it makes everyone so uncomfortable. :D

Great ranking, but personally, I think Angela should’ve been much higher. That episode tends to get overshadowed by the episode that comes after, and it saddens me, because for me the episode is almost as haunting as The View from Halfway Down and has some truly cutting moments. The line “Do it for Sarah Lynn, doesn’t she deserve more than to be remembered as the girl you killed?” sends chills down my spine every time. Their whole casual conversation about erasing Bojack from Horsin’ around forever in Angela’s dimly lit mansion is the perfect atmosphere, and the ending scene of Bojack breaking into his old house and officially hitting rock bottom is absolutely chilling and one of my favorite scenes in the whole show.

I feel like there's some nuance to Bojack Hates The Troops and how it relates to Crackerjack. In The View From Halfway Down we can see that Bojack wants to think of Crackerjack as an unaccomplished, incompetent soldier out of bitterness from having grown up hearing Beatrice idolize her brother and constantly comparing them, and these writers definitely are the type to sneak in a reference about that early on. I don't know, it just how for so long she had tried and tried to support him and gave him the benefit of the doubt so many times in hope for Bojacks change, and when she finally sees him in a positive light, it's also the time where she discovers how he'd stooped even lower with learning the reality of the Sarah Lynn situation. I find it incredibly interesting how you can relate to "Good Damage" because of your similarities of your experience as a writer to Dianes struggles in that episode. Because I also related very hard to that episode, but I am not creative in the slightest; my relation to the episode stems from the heartbreakingly real depiction of depression and the process of getting through drepession; from the little things like not realizing an entire day has gone by to the big things like coping with the meds, the change in personality, the fear of what being dependent on meds for the rest of your life. I'm not even saying that your interpretation of the episode is wrong: Quite the contrary. I think it just speaks volumes about the brilliance of the writers that so many people, from different positions, can look upon that episode and relate to it.
