Happy Halloween, everyone :) This year, I am dressing up as Margaret, the Log Lady from Twin Peaks, which is my all time favorite t.v. show. Could also be my favorite Halloween "mood". I would love to see a disturbing books video that specifically focuses on novellas and short stories (like 100-200 words or less), I love those super impactful punch you in the gut kinds of reads that are short but stay far longer than theyre welcome

Vivarium is one of those movies that sticks with you. Really good movie. Maybe the ending could have been better, but the middle was my kind of hell situation.

Halloween ends was very frustrating for me because it felt like one part of the studio wanted it to be a slow sinister corruption arc of someone (because of a simple accident) slowly turning into a monster to continue Michael's legacy, and another part of the studio wanted an epic final showdown between Michael and Laurie, and either of those ideas could have made for decent movies but by trying to achieve both at once in the same movie they wound up succeeding at neither.

Happy Halloween! 🎃 couldn’t agree with you more about Halloween. H40was cool, but toed the line a bit for me. Kills was just straight up disrespectful cuz I paid money to see it in theaters lmao. With Ends, I streamed it for free and it still wasn’t worth it lol. And Evil Dead Rise I remember being alright, but I’m bias as hell because of the company I was with when I had watched it. I had also never seen anything preceding that, so I went in cold. I do want to check out the Ash saga, and the 2013 remake. But I haven’t yet.

I loved the new Halloween installments but I agree about Evil Dead Rise... everyone seems to love it but the 2013 is far superior to me!

Tenebrae is one of my favorite Argento films, the opening scene with the music it’s amazing. 100% agree with the Evil Dead 2013, my favorite horror remake by far…. I absolutely love that movie.

Totally with you on both the new Evil Dead movies. Evil Dead (2013) = Perfection. Evil Dead: Rise = Absolute Let Down. I loved Vivarium (aside from the child screaming, which got annoying really quickly). I don't know what the director intended, but there's so much you can take away from it, so many different possible interpretations. My Mom's been begging me to watch The Pope's Exorcist with her, and I've been avoiding it like the plague. After listening to you, I'm considering giving in and watching it with her. I'm a newer viewer of yours. I think our opinions align a lot more with movies than books, but I like watching your book content anyway. I hated Tender is the Flesh, but I thought your take on it was quite interesting. Thanks for the movie commentary. Differing opinions are interesting. For some reason, In The Mouth Of Madness, directed by John Carpenter, starring Sam Niel, is my absolute favorite. Legit movie. Just seemed like they were having so much fun while making it. Must have been a lot of laughs on set.

Loved Vivarium, though at the same time I have no desire to watch it again. Phenomena is one of my favourite Argento films - I find all all of his stuff is goofy to varying degrees, so the silliness that bothers some regards this one doesn't give me pause. I wasn't fond of either the 2013 Evil Dead, or the newest iteration. It's not that they are bad per se, just that they are run of the mill, and by the numbers. What made the originals (or at least the first two) so good was the aggressively original filming techniques, and sound design, which when combined with scripts in which the action only gets more frenetic and crazed, resulted in a truly relentless experience. The new ones employ very obvious cinematography and sound design, with the new one in particular often reverting to frequent lulls in proceedings, instead of constantly ratcheting things up. I'm happy for folks that liked them, but they aren't for me. Good video, thanks!

Evil Dead Rise was fine, but it didn't need the motherhood subtext. Halloween III is a gem of a film.

I think the latest Halloween trilogy would have worked much better if they flipped the order of Ends and Kills. Have Michael recovering from the events of 2018 and a copycat taking his place, then have him return by the end and kick off a lot of the events from Kills. Wouldn’t have made them great, but it would have been more narratively satisfying.

Curious what you think of the Hell House LLC movies? I thought Carmichael Housefelt like a great return to form of the first one, less visual effects, more practical

Pope Mosely did not look pleased, lol. I found the Pope's Exorcist more funny than anything. I just kept picturing Russel Crowe on the moped lol. I have the same problem with the the Nightmare On Elm St remake...I don't think it added anything. I will have to watch some of these. Happy Halloween!!

Great list. I hated Halloween Kills and Ends. Kills was like every bad movie in the Halloween franchise poured into one movie, and Ends was a slasher movie that didn't want to be a slasher movie until a bs cop-out at the end. I liked Evil Dead Rise, but I feel like in this and even in the Remake, they focus on the gore of the original films and not on the surreal elements or the comedy that helped give those movies their identity. I love Tenebrae, it's my second favorite Argento movie after Deep Red. The ending shouldn't work but it somehow does, and the kills are outstanding. And When Evil Lurks is my favorite film this year, and I hate possession movies. I've never been a person who yells at the screen but this movie got me(I still prefer Terrified, which is more of a 'fun' horror movie).

You must watch Dagon, others I recommend are The Whisperer in Darkness, Dog Soldiers and the new Hellraiser movie.

In regards to your husband looking up Vivarium for its interpretation: "Don't ask questions you don't want the answers to."

As a middle class mum stuck in suburban hell I felt every minute of Vivarium. Really cool movie.

Big disagree on Evil Dead Rise. The only thing the remake had going for it was the level of bloodiness, otherwise I didn’t connect with any characters in that one. Evil Dead rise takes place in a new location other than a cabin, having a family be the center is a big switch up from a bunch of young adults being in danger, and the ending was incredibly satisfying. One of the better horror films this year.

Tenebrae is great. Dario Argento is like the king of making shitty movies that are just so beautiful. The cinematography, atmosphere, and score of his films really elevate them

I don't understand the skepticism, but the exquisite monsterpiece Phenomena is from 1985.

I totally get why you hate “Halloween Ends.” Personally, I enjoy it, and I think the filmmakers were trying to parallel the original Halloween three:season of the witch, in that it barely has to do with Michael Myers. I thought it was shot really well, and the opening scene is such a standout to me. Similar to Halloween 3: season of the witch, if Ends was not dubbed a “Halloween” movie, I think it would have a much better public perception/reaction. However, I totally respect your opinion, and I know that I am in the painfully lonely minority with this opinion lol. The only one that you watched that I didn’t care for was evil dead rise. I just thought it was so painfully boring and run of the mill. I almost fell asleep lol

Phenomena is a classic. The alltime great beauty Jennifer Connelly can just walk around and look at the camera for a couple hours with the Goblin score and I'd be totally fine with that. Season of the Witch is unequivocally the best Halloween movie.

How are you with extreme horror books vs extreme horror movie ie terrifier 1 & 2, martyrs, À l’intérieur (inside)? Personally I can stomach movies better cuz I have an overactive imagination and will imagine book scenes in the worst way, while with movies I’m simply shown the horror, and it’s usually far better than I would imagine (except for THAT scene in terrifier 2😂😂😂😂)

While I enjoyed Evil Dead Rise more than you did. I’ll agree that the 2013 film is a better film. It’s scarier, more inventively gruesome, and has better characters.

I liked Evil Dead Rise, the claustrophobia of it, and I liked the characters. What seemed strange to me is that there's ONE MOMENT of campy humor in it that calls back to the original Evil Dead, but only the one. It seemed out of place in a movie that otherwise avoided camp. Now, for a film with NO likable characters -- in fact, pretty much utterly UNLIKABLE characters -- see Hereditary. An underappreciated horror film that needs more love is Blood on Satan's Claw, an old British movie with a campy name but a truly creepy premise. As to filmmakers not saying what they intended...why shouldn't they? If you don't want to know, just don't read what they say. But it's not really reasonable to tell artists not to share their own interpretations of their work. Their interpretations don't invalidate anyone else's unless you attribute YOUR interpretation to the artist, rather than accepting it as your own experience of the work.

i’m a pretty casual horror fan, i didn’t even know evil dead rise was a sequel, i was hanging with some friends until one brought up wanting to see it so we pretty much dived right in. i’m sorry, i hated it 😭. it was just really gruesome and the little plot it had was low key boring, i actually sorta liked the characters (except the little girl, i’m sorry but i DESPISE the innocent naive little child trope in horror movies to try to make you feel bad for them) but we didn’t even watch the watch the whole thing, mostly because it was just boring and gross.

I loved Halloween Ends because they actually tried to do something different for once. If anything the Laurie/Michael stuff felt tacked on just to satisfy some kind of studio mandate. So aside from the tacked on ending, I loved it. Halloween Kills on the other hand, that gets a lot of groans.

Finally! Someone else who sees Evil Dead Rise for what it is! This could have been titled as anything, not much of a link to Evil Dead. Yes, and the characters were very unrelatable. It didn’t do anything interesting to me too 👍

Yes totally agree with the Halloween Kills/ends films, pure garbage. Also yes on EVIL DEAD, it feels nothing like the original film, it seems they're taking the idea and turning it into a generic people possessed film... no more weird looking monster now its people with contact lenses a film suggestion for you "DAY OF THE BEAST" (1995) by Alex de Iglesia... such a cool horror movie

You don't like the new Halloween movies because they arn't made for your age demograhic. They are designed to create nostalgia with those who remember going to see the original sequels in the theatre. They did that for me.
