They did mange to make Tentacruel presence not overwhelming in Hoenn water though. By having an unholy amount of Pelipper.

I think part of the point with Kalos having so many old Pokemon is that this is the first time you experience them in 3D so conveniently. The wow factor certainly affected it back in the day.

I find it funny that the DP dex is so bad that D and E tiers don't end up getting any use.

Kanto is the original and I get it but I swear to god some people need to get it through their thick heads that Original doesnt always mean the best

The worst part about DP Flint and Volkners teams are that they *aren't* intentional. I will say this to the day I die, Flint and Volkner's teams are cool and I like how it's not just the same type to get stomped by an OHKO super effective move but rather Pokemon that fit around and idea reminicent of the type (Electric=energy so energetic Ambipom). It just seems like an interesting idea that didn't reach it's potential cause it doesn't feel like Gamefreak did this on purpose.

I really enjoyed how Black and White only had players use gen5 pokemon until the post game. Big fan of only using that region's pokemon for the main story, wish they did that more often.

Speaking of dexes, anyone find it weird how slugma and skarmory feel like hoenn pokemon due to how common they are in hoenn rather than johto?

I more or less agree with this list. Only thing I would change is I would put the BW2 dex in S tier. It's insane that even 7 hours into the playthrough, you're still seeing new Pokémon. The variety is amazing and you can get a Riolu barely half an hour into the game. Love that.

My only gripe with the Platinum Dex is how they treated Dragon-Types. They realized having only 1 Dragon-type family was a problem and only added Altaria, the weakest dragon-type in the game. Flygon, I can understand because Sinnoh has no equivalent of a desert area like Route 111, but couldn't they have thrown Horsea or Dratini into a water route and/or the Game Corner as Johto or Hoenn did?

B2/W2 is by far my favorite dex in all of the games. Talk about decisions, I’ve never had such a difficult time deciding who I want to run with than when I received my copy of B2 for my birthday last year and played for the first time

Who doesn't like tropius? It's a flying banana-producing sauropod. I never imagined myself saying that with a straight face. But tropius made me do it.

You can get aerodactylite pretty early too you just have to talk to the scientist again after you get an old amber from the cave you first beat team flare in.

While yes the NPCs don't seem to make much use of the Platinum Dex mons because it's closer to DP, the Platinum mons ARE in the regional Dex of BDSP and are available in the main story through the new Underground.

I knew DP would rank low but didn’t expect it to be bottom tier. Man, Fire and Electric types got screwed in this gen. I’m very happy that Kalos ranked high, though. I love the wide range of options, minimal new Pokémon aside.

Despite Sword and Shield not having a National Dex, which I never really cared about to begin with, I felt like the Regional Pokémon was the most fun to complete, especially because of the Wild Area and the unique evolution methods of some Pokémon

The Johto-dex is honestly hard to rank, because the concept of a "regional-dex" hadn't really been invented yet. It was just the national-dex in a different order. If Johto we're to have a proper regional-dex of its own, by the same standards as every other game, it would have to exclude all of the post game mons only available in Kanto... and by that standard it problem loses a rank or two.

Diamond/Pearl Dex was so pathetic Lucian and his Bronzong were so damn unkillable with only Infernape and Rapidash to deal fire stab damage

The available pokemon in gen 8 feel really good. And the region was almost great. It's set up for greatness. They should let the player take on the first 3 gyms in any order, then 4-7 in any order as long as you beat the ghost/fighting gym before the fairy gym. That level of nonlinearity would have been very reminiscent of the Kanto region.

Fun fact: bdsp will use the platinum dex but the only way to get the platinum exusive pokémon before the post game is the grand underground

Zubat got a bit of crud in this video (rightfully so mind you) but I don't know, something about getting annoyed at these things whenever I walked a few steps a cave always brought me a strange sense of joy and it just felt like that was missing in the base Galar dex. Plus I would never want a game without my favourite Johto mon Crobat in it.

8:35 Tropius was added because it was one of only 2 non-legendary/non-starter evolutionary lines that weren’t available in Diamond and Pearl in someone way shape or form. The other line was Tangela.

Johto should absolutely be in F tier. It's very large but SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many of the new pokémon aren't worth using in any way. Almost every Johto pokémon is either bad, poorly designed, an evolution of a Kanto pokémon, or not even available until the post-game. I make best teams (yeah, like Mystic Umbreon) and I've never had a harder time than when I was trying to make them for Johto. Edit: I forgot to mention, even when we consider the Kanto pokémon, some of the ones that were easily accessible in Kanto can't evolve until the post-game. For some reason, you can't get a Fire, Water, or Thunder Stone in Johto so if you want to use a pokémon like Arcanine or Poliwrath, you're just out of luck. Your only option was to agree to send money to your mom and hope she happens to buy the right stone with your money. Also, I'm sorry to say this as you're one of my favorite PokéTubers, but to praise Johto for having pokémon that aren't available until the post-game and then nail that against Sinnoh is pretty hypocritical. If we count DP evolutions that aren't accessable during the main story against them, we should do the same with the pokémon that aren't available until after beating Johto's league.

One plus for the BW dex is the ability to search for Pokémon based on route. When completing the Pokédex many people needed to go online to find certain Pokémon that they’re missing and most will do it one at a time to find the route. There’s a good chance they’ll do one, get it, do another, and for they’re third find they’ll have to go back to the route they were previously at. BW changed that by telling you when you had caught all of the available pokemon on the route.

My complaints with the Kanto remakes is that they should have made it so the dex was expanded to have any new evolutions that existed at that time like ORAS did. Expanding the dex would have fixed at least a couple of the issues with type imbalance

You ever notice how in the diamond and pearl pokedex, while only having two fire type families, has ever water ground type family minus the mudkip line. Those being wooper line, barbouch line and shellos line. You'd think they could have removed at least one of those.

My favorite regional dex is probably Hoenn's, since it is mostly Gen 3 mons with some old Pokemon returning. While I do get your problems with it, there are some unique returning mons in the dex like Donphan, Starmie, Muk, Xatu, Dodrio, etc. I actually prefer smaller pokedexes (around 210-230 mons) with a good selection of returning mons that fit the region since they're easier to complete (though I've never completed a regional dex before because of trade evos and version exclusives) .

Johto pokedex should be much lower. Most of the pokemon introduced in that region are so bad that gym leaders barely use them.

Rotom Dex is useful for having boost effect in Ultra Sun and moon , yes the interactions is fun sometimes, but it keeps asking questions and you can't turn that setting off which makes it annoying most of the time. I would rank it in A.

15:50 I LOVE when people act like they didn't know a dex cut would be coming. I mean we can't expect EVERY game to have literally 1000+ pokemon. Counting all alternate forms, 1276+. Counting shinies 2,552+ different pokemon. Plus gender differences. That would take up WAY too much file space

While not actually being in the BDSP Sinnoh Dex itself, most Platinum Pokemon are available as soon as you reach Eterna City via the Grand Underground. Pickup was also apparently tweaked to give evolution items at level 11 now.

Am I the only one who'd swap the B/W and B2/W2 dexes? I have to admit, I much preferred Unova being all new pokemon in the regional dex. In fact, I'd probably put the B/W dex in S, it's definitely my favorite.

You forgot to mention that there are only 2 fully evolve ice types in the Diamond and Pearl pokedex and there is a gym leader that uses ice types so why does everyone forget about the ice issue and only complain about electric and fire?

One of the biggest issues in my eyes is how they handled Gen 4 Evolutions in HG/SS. Like I can use Yanmega as soon as Yanma learns Ancient Power, while Mamoswine requires Blackthorn's Move Reminder. But I can't use Togekiss, Honchcrow, Weavile or Gliscor as their Evolution Stones/Held Items require the Battle Frontier. And then there's not even an Electric Field or Rock for Magnezone, Leafeon and Glaceon, not even in Kanto. This is why Silver's Team stays so bad. In Gen 4, only his Starter is actually fully evolved before the League.

I feel like you didn't really justify the B/W dex only being in B-tier. Like you said it features more new pokémon than any other Dex to date, and on top of that nearly all of them are viable team members. It's also very balanced, with no type being left out, giving the player tons of good options to choose from. Personally I'd definitely place it in S-tier alongside Alola.

A 100% agree on the Let’s Go opinions, I really wish they had included the post Gen 1 evolutions or pre-evolutions of the Gen 1 Pokémon. I guess they wanted to save on the work of adding in however many more Pokémon and create following animations for them but they added Megas which they could’ve left out tbh (though I guess they don’t have follow animations). Or maybe they didn’t want to have to rebalance the games to reflect the newly included Pokémon but again, Megas are in the game that completely break the game and the catching mechanic plus candies make your team easily overpowered anyway. I guess I get it, they’re under such a strict deadline now that we can’t really expect them to not churn out mediocre games anymore. Still, just having more options would completely justify a retread of Kanto and would’ve given the games a little more identity.

Personally, I don't care for the huge regional dexes. I think the Johto and B2W2 dexes are the optimal size, 250-300. Something about 400+ Pokémon seems like overkill. It's one thing to have the National Dex and being able to use any Pokémon, but it's quite another to have most of them available in the wild. Makes finding a specific Pokémon utter hell.

I know you said BDSP use the DP Dex, and that is true, but I think it’s worth noting that you can access some Platinum Dex mons via the underground during the main story according to data mines. Overall, I’d say my favorite regional dex is BW2’s. A perfect blend of old and new. Ultra and SwSh’s dexes tie for a close second for the same reasons you gave.

I still think the new Galar Pokemon are kinda weird, particularly with coloring, some felt too neon looking, where ironically someone like Skowvet which is pretty plain I actually like. Also, I feel the distribution of the Pokemon in Galar felt forced in the Wild Area that it needed more routes to make them fit better IMO although as you said it shouldn't affect this ranking. Galar has a pretty great Regional Dex although I think Kalos is a bit better. My dream Regional Pokedex though is having 600 with a 150x4 style like Kalos, but I actually made a poll in Reddit, and apparently many just want a 300-400 Pokemon Regional Dex, I would've thought many would just like to go nuts in a Regional Dex hehe.

It's funny how you mention Hoenn only having 2 new ice lines, because it also only has 3 new fire lines, with one of them being a starter than 2/3 of people won't pick.

The BDSP dex is different than the originals according to leaks and the Grand Underground, so that's a plus at least.

4:14 the thing these pokemon all have in common is that their evolutions can't be easily gated like pokemon that require specific items. They all evolve after learning a specific move. If you remove those moves, you remove the evolution methods entirely unless you put in some post-game move tutor just for them.

The theme of temporary form change 9f the battles and the duality of pokemon is quite present in Galax with it being a mechanic with two similar features (dynamax and gmax) and this theme can also be seen in the pokedex with it having many Galar pokemon that have more than one form and with a lot of other pokemon from previous gens with more than one form or split evolutions.

Even though the Alola dex is top tier on mons, I'll have to give it a B, for Rotom never shutting the f**k up. 😂

I’d also bring up two things. The first being just how small the fire type options are in Gen 3, with only the Torchic line, Numel line, slugma line and torkoal as options. Granted 3/4 of those aren’t half bad, but damn the variety is very small and is over before it begins. Same with Unova and it’s water types, of which there’s only Basculin and Oshawotts line before surf. It does open up more afterwards but by that point Water types don’t have as many good match ups

7:48 one issue even you overlooked: despite being the coldest region with an ice type gym leader, the DP dex only added ONE fully evolved ice type, Abomasnow. Everything else is locked behind Platinum/Postgame.

You know what? I don’t even care that SwSH does not include EVERY pokemon. In real life, you don’t see every plant and animal species in one continent. Ie: you’re not going to find a wild giraffe or elephant in South America.

I think the original Gen1 does a superb job in making every playtrough different.

Since Gen 5, I've been paying close attention to every Regional Dex, as the first year of a new generation would only allow Regional Dex Pokemon in VGC. That's why I didn't really mind the Dex Cut in SwSh. Even if every Pokemon was transferrable to those games, I would still be concerned about what would make it into the Galar Dex for VGC 2020 (which as we all know was unfortunately cut short due to COVID)

This video single handedly explains why the Platinum Dex (and game as a whole) are superior to the D/P dex (and those games in general.). Which also explains people's issues with BD/SP and it's dex. Also, (and personally) the best Pokedex means nothing if you hate all of the Pokemon in it. So... yeah. RIP Unova for me.

PokéDexes with buttons and a touchscreen are the best.

Base of the actual designs, the Unova Dex is so nostalgic, the Kalos Dex looks really cool, and Rotom Dex has its charm.

My first ever Pokemon game was Pokemon shield and I bought it last year. I've known about Pokemon ever since I was little, but never got into it because I thought Pokemon was overrated. While I still think it's overrated, ever since I've bought Pokemon shield, I've been more into Pokemon than I used to be and I even bought Pokemon moon today and can't wait to play it.

Actually, the art of the Pokédex in Diamond and Pearl has a gray D-pad on black while the Platinum Dex has a black D-pad on gray.

You can actually use Mega Aerodactyl before you beat the game. You get the Mega Stone from the scientists after saving the fossil guy in Glittering Cave, and you have a very low chance of getting an Old Amber when you smash rocks there.

One of the reasons why Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon are my favorite pokemon games of all time is because I would argue they are one of the harder pokemon games yet where other pokemon games are harder due to the limitations they give to the player, in Ultra Sun and Moon, they give you the EXP share, they give you infinite TMs, they give you lots of stuff to help you, yet they are still harder than most pokemon games. And the Pokedex of USUM perfectly reflects that. They give you tons of options as pokemons, and let you do what you want. I love the options of USUM.

What's your favorite pokedex design? For me its between the sinnoh and kanto dex. The rest seem too much like other devices or to bulky to be fast and easy to use while running around.

The Sinnoh dex is honestly my favorite due to how is actually looks like an actual game console, such as the DS itself. I even believe someone took that idea and made an actual DS with the shell being made from a Sinnoh Pokedex toy

Honestly, my one gripe with this video is a personal opinion. While the encounter rates are excessive, I love having Zubat, since Crobat is an amazing pokemon you can get pretty early with a bit of friendship grinding. This gets way easier in later gens, too.

I'm confused. You praised BW for having a dex full of new pokemon. The bug types from that generation onwards were going to get better and stronger. Not a single type was left out for diversity, the dex itself was well balanced. And yet, cause some pokemon seemed to be similar to gen 1 pokemon (like rogenrolla and timburr per your example) it goes into B tier? That doesn't make sense. You gave it so many positives, and that one negative you say places it in B. Edit: And it goes below Platinum's dex? When all it did was fix a minor issue with pokemon distribution? It doesn't make any sense at all.

my pokedex TOP 3: 1- Johto 2- Unova 3- Kalos

I sometimes forget that the Platinum dex is only 210 species because of how absurdly better it was than the DP dex. Anyways. Probably gonna remove some tiers. S tier - B2W2, USUM, Kalos for their variety, size and great selection. Imo, not having too many new pokémon isn't a bad thing, keeps the bloat at bay (as in created, I'd want as many of the new pokés in the regional dex as possible obviously) A tier - Plat because it fixed so much from the DP dex with a rather small size of 210. HGSS Johto dex in here aswell since it fixed quite a bit of the old Johto dex simply by including new evos. SM dex - good base dex upgraded by USUM's, but had no complaints. B tier - BW. Locking out all old pokémon is such a stupid decision, especially if they just felt like putting a bunch of bootleg pokémon in their place. I love some of those bootlegs, but jesus. Since otherwise, the variety is nice (even though at this point 150something is small), I'll keep it here. It's definitely way better than the other ones, but if it didn't do that one stupid design decision, I'd have it up with the A ranks. C tier - the original 3 dexes. Unbalanced, chock full of weak pokés, just really overshadowed by Platinum and beyond. Imo, the regional dexes since plat were fantastic, those before really get blown out of the water here. They really show their age. bottom tier - DP dex. Just omegalol.

I've never been a big fan of Nuzlockes. And I'm even *less* of a fan of one's *first* playthrough of a Pokémon game being a Nuzlocke. Like, what's wrong with just, you know, playing it normally? Why? I would've otherwise loved to follow it, but since it's s Nuzlocke, I'll have to sit it out due to personal preferences. I'm disappointed.
