00:00 Best and Worst Men’s RTW Shoe Brands Introduction
Indeed, your shoes are something most people notice upon making their first impression and are often the last thing that’s seen when you walk away. There’s no denying that a great pair of shoes will elevate even an average-looking rest of the outfit. So if your shoes are the foundation of a top-notch ensemble, maybe our rankings will help you in your footwear choices!
00:55 The Rules
a. We’re only considering the ready-to-wear shoes that these brands provide
b. We’re going to be ranking (in truth, grading) these brands across five categories, ranging from best to worst.
c. No one has sponsored this video or paid us to discuss their shoes in it.
d. The brands are listed basically at random, in no particular order.
e. And of course, these are ultimately our personal opinions and therefore subjective.
02:05 1. Alden
02:41 2. Allen Edmonds (Independence Collection)
04:07 3. Altan
04:54 4. Edward Green
06:02 5. John Lobb

21:26 25. Corthay

What did you think of our rankings? And, did we miss a brand of ready-to-wear shoes that you would have put on the list? Ultimately, whichever brand of shoes you choose to go with, if you invest in fit and quality, not only will your feet thank you, but you’ll also literally be putting your best (and most stylish) foot forward.

A note for our viewers: a previous version of this video erroneously stated that Florentine bespoke shoemaker Roberto Ugolini was deceased, but he is very much alive. In fact, it was another Florentine bespoke shoemaker, Stefano Bemer, who passed away in 2012. We wish Mr. Ugolini continued success!

Santoni's Fatte a Mano line is actually worth buying. The others are fairly average, but it seems overly harsh to stick them below fashion brands like Tods, Ferragamo (minus the Tramezzas) Jeffrey West, and Gucci.

This was a very nice selection of brands. It’s interesting to see different perspectives on some of these, and even within your team, how some liked a brand maybe more than others. There are some brands I wish you would’ve included like Bontoni or Antonio Meccariello or Norman Vilalta for example. I know it’s impossible to include all of them though because the video would be extremely long. Another interesting one I have experience with is Justin Fitzpatricks shoes. His catalogue to shop from is huge and he offers some pretty unique options with some custom mto stuff as well. Shoepassion has some nice ones and so does Carmina. I have been indulging in Carmina’s custom program which basically allows you to choose a lots of options, like a mto program that’s pretty in depth.

Thank you for another great video. I feel you would have included Norman Vilalta and Antonio Meccariello lines if you had extensive wear experience with them. Both coming to RTW with strong experience in Bespoke shoemaking. It would also be informative if one day you could make a video of maybe 15 best dress boots above $500. I have seen many of your videos and learned so much.

Good topic and video. Would you consider doing another video with shoe brands under $500? Some brands I suggest ranking include Allen Edmonds (not their Independence Collection), Loake, TLB Mallorca, Carmina, Sons of Henrey, Thomas Bird, Beckett Simonon, Meermin, Jack Erwin, Ace Marks, Thursday Boot Company, Velasca, Anthony Veer, CNES, J. Fitzpatrick, and Taft, to name a few.

Ouch, my favorite pair in my collection is a pair of Santoni's I got new under $300 (new $700) and I have to disagree, the quality is phenomenal. Hand painted with the most beautiful layered rich colors, super comfy, and it mixed brand being more fashionable but super traditional in terms of shoe making. Regardless of what you think of the styles, it deserves a higher spot. Still, a great video as always! Makes me really want to try out Vass. Maybe I'll convert you to the Belgian loafer gang haha! Cheers

Agreed. My favourites are Santoni Goodyear-welted wholecuts. Phenomenal quality/finish, beautiful last, fantastic arch support. (Admittedly MSRP on these was way above $500). I’ve never found a pair of Allen Edmonds that I’d want to wear, based on homely looks and coarse finishes. I think Alden’s use of sub-quality innards is appalling at their price point.
@DemetriosLevi

@@scottbarker3885 exactly. I've personally never been attracted to Allen Edmonds; very standard looking with not much flair and yeah, the finishing isn't all that. I agree with Vass being on the top of this list, they're shoes are almost always under $500, and they have wonderful lasts and craftsmanship. There is also an option to get b grade shoes with minor defects and those can be had for around $350. In my opinion, Vass undoubtedly provides the best shoe for the money, and It's the shoe I would recommend to anyone below the bespoke shoe price range. Some brands that have been gaining attention have been TLB Mallorca as well as Yeosall, I haven't tried them out personally so I'd like to see your review before I drop the cash. Again I would love to say thank you to everyone at the Gentleman's Gazette for these wonderful videos, while I'm a bit more fashion-forward in regards to classical style ( I wear pinstripe or black jackets instead of a regular navy blazer). I really do appreciate everything you guys do and have taught me. Here's a quick tip for those who are more fashion-forward however, learn the rules and acquire the basic garments of classical menswear, and then and only then should you branch outside the traditional. From time to time try a black blazer instead of navy, or get a pinstripe jacket and put that on with grey pants. Do it right and I promise you won't look like an idiot. I think a video that many of us want to see is the best shoe regardless of the price video (including, rtr, mtm and bespoke). It's nice to have a holy grail to save up for.

@fgfghjkggdfdghjfgfjh I have a pair of Osts in blue suede. The suede gets a bit dirty due to where I live(AZ) and because of my wider feet, the upper kinda squishes against the sole, so some of the dye has rubbed onto the upper. The fudging has also imprinted into the uppers. A bit odd but it might just be due to my feet. Otherwise fairly comfortable and mold to your feet rather quickly. Plus the closed channel is an appreciated detail at such a low price point.

Completely agree on Vass shoes - they are just incredible for the price. Surprised on Santoni, though - all my local stores offer them (Fatte A Mano line) at around $500 - $800, and they come in some very attractive lasts - as well as nice materials. During sales season they're obviously much cheaper.

I enjoyed this video very much. Thank You. I have a pair of Cleverly shoes made to copy a British style WW2 service shoe in looks and out of Scotch Grain. I got these circa 2005. I remember the cost was $315 and they were from the cheaper line. They had a middle line for the $570ish range and bespoke started at $2000 or so. One of the most comfortable shoes I ever wore. I wore out the leather soles and heals and put a vibram medium lug sole in them and wore those out as well and resoled them in Vibrams again. Still going strong and I keep them polished and they are still casual presentable as a walker or with jeand or khakis. I know you dont like Vibrams but I always thought a military shoe was the exception to the rule.

I would love to see a comparison of dress shoes in the $300 to $500 range, I would also like to hear the maximum shoe size these Manufacturers offer. Finally I would very much like to hear about shoe makers that make larger size shoes, I wear a 14 2E but may be a 15 depending. Allen Edmonds seems to be my only choice below $500, are there any others?

I'm glad you included the Gucci loafer. I know, it's a fashion brand, but the 1953 loafer is an exception. It's blake stitched so will never win over die hard shoe nerds, but then again, if they were Goodyear welted they wouldn't have the same sleek look. After all, the styling of a shoe is very important for most.

Nice video. For those in the NYC area, Santoni shoes are sold at a Santoni outlet in Harriman NY at up to 50% off retail. They are really solidly made. I suspect they, along with the cockroaches, will survive a nuclear war. The three pairs I have purchased there (ranging from $500 to $600) have matched or exceeded my expectations. They are very stiff leather but remarkably comfortable given how rigid they are. I used to buy mostly A. Testoni. They were pricy but perfect for my foot shape. On sale at the Rome store on the day after Epiphany, they were more reasonably priced. Unfortunately, they have cheapened their materials and construction and gone for a mass market. I found one pair of "new old stock" A. Testoni in Hong Kong 4 years ago but those days are over. Your list in this video gives me some other new options to try. Thanks.

I'd be interested in hearing your opinions about military surplus parade/dress boots, i personally quite like them since they have a nice mix of stylish military flare with old fashioned gentleman's and are easily found pretty cheap in surplus and second hand stores.

Yeah I'd love to see some lower end goodyear welted shoes like loakes and barker get some attention, at these price points it is more likely to see fashion brands blurring the lines if quality in the $300 area

@fgfghjkggdfdghjfgfjh soles are soles, personally I would happily buy an ideal shoe with zero quality soles for £200 less than the same shoe with nice soles. Though I can see how in a vast collection, where they wouldn't get worn through very quickly, the wrong soles and the cost of resoling could impact a decision to purchase. Like tires on a car whilst not being a dealbreaker for one's dream car, is definitely an annoying extra expense.
