An often overlooked benefit of Frost Walker is that it allows you to walk on magma blocks without taking damage, making it quite useful for Nether exploration

I think Iskall should take on that challenge, finish Season 9 without any mending enchantments on his gear, but, he would also have to keep tally on how many tools and armour pieces he broke. With a long term server like Hermitcraft where the grinding and building are done to an extreme scale would make this experiment really interesting.

I'd say he should try it next season. Only because we're probably only a month or two out from this one ending so it wouldn't really be a huge challenge (especially since all the shops have already been developed and he probably has diamonds to spend for blocks and stuff)

As a SUPER casual player who doesn’t like grinding for survivability and prefers being able to hop right into getting materials/building, mending is the best thing ever. I get it’s not for everyone but for me I’d like to not have to keep getting new gear constantly and instead just quickly heal it and then move on to the things I care about.

I think protection should be swapped out for "Melee Protection" to match up with "Projectile Protection". Then you'd have to weigh the benefits and swap out armor for different combat situations

Creepers ruin everything (under the current stats you need one proc and two blast proc to survive a ninja creeper if wearing an elytra).

Except it's less effective than the more specialized protections. So the real solution is to ADD melee protection, not replace generic protection. @@Salt_Mage

Alright um... a few thing wrong: 1.Impaling only does extra damage to guardians, squid, and fish 2. Lure changes how fast you catch, not how much fish you get 3. You can get nametags, saddles, enchanted bows and fishing rods and books, and shells from fishing treasure 4. Luck of the sea almost triples the chance of treasure. Will update as I watch more of the video.

Something interesting about piercing that makes it better is that it allows your shots to go through shields. Like axes break a shield for a while, but piercing crossbows negate the shield entirely making it really good in pvp situations with shields

it's a game designer thing. sometimes making a game more fun involves making the player weaker. i had a design lead tell me once that if you make a fun and interesting way to get something, then make a boring and grindy way to get the same thing but easier, players will always take the boring grindy route and say the game is boring.

@@jsw973 Yeah it's considered Undead, not Aquatic, so Smite works on it but not Impaling. I don't know why it can't be both... though...

The way the Protection enchantments work is that having 3 Pieces with Prot 4 and one specialized will give you the max possible protection from that damage type and decent protection from other damage types. Having full prot 4 will give you good protection from all damage types, but not the max amount in any of them.

True. It's a balancing the numbers at that point. Do you prefer 80% of one type of damage reduction and only reduce all other damage types by 48%, or do you prefer an all-rounder build that gives -64% damage to everything. If you consistently always die to one type of damage only, then yeah it could be worth it. But for many people, the all-rounder build is probably better.

I think mending is super needed for me because I prefer going up in progress and not having to revert back to nothing. I do understand that it can get op a little too quickly, but it still feels like progression.

I agree. Gear has sentimental value, we name it, and it becomes part of our story. Personally though, I think they should be repairable via an anvil, not self-maintained... in the context of survival. That being said, if you want more of a blend between survival and creativity, then the whole anvil maintenance concept becomes more tiresome.

4:30 Something important that was missed about piercing is that it is very good in PVP as it can pierce through shields. Not sure if that would have changed the rating, but it's something to take note of nonetheless.

Luck of the Sea only reduces fish from 85% of catches to 84.5%. Most of the treasure catch increase comes from junk catch reduction.

@@bikalpsatyal6699 Yeah, I see that now in the wiki in the Lure history section: Lure and Luck added in 1.7.2, and Lure stopped affecting loot in 1.9. I had a feeling that was a possibility.

I love Flame and Fire Aspect so I'm sad to see them get ranked so low, they're really good in combination with knockback too, just seeing a flaming creeper fly off into the distance never gets old

If you're fighting mobs or other players a lot, I think not having Mending would be a terrible thing and make playing the game less fun if you always have to worry about how much Durability you have and end up having to make a dozen sets of backup armor in case the armor you're using breaks. I'm not saying that worrying about the durability would be bad, but on top of everything else like resource management and traversal, as well as the items you want to work to get, it's just another thing that I don't think needs to be added to worry about.

Honestly reminds me of my time spent before 1.14 when i didnt know mending was even a actual enchantment lol, spent most my time mining for replacement tools and armor rather than building and having fun. Life with mending has been a game changer for me where i can now plan megastructures or just basic homes instead of grinding to get a new pickaxe lol

Repairs exist at the anvil though??? It's really not that hard. You forget about it because mending basically replaces ever even thinking about it. But 4 levels and 1 diamond and your tool gets 33% durability. It's cheap.

@@SquintyGears Every time you add enchantments or repair it gets more expensive, causing you to have to grind more and more levels each time. I don't think it's as time saving as Mending is.

Alright, before watching: Do we think they know Thorns causing massive durability damage was removed in 1.16.2 ? Cap's gotten it wrong before . . . AND AT 40:37 IN, THEY'RE STILL WRONG EDIT: On the specific protections, because apparently there is confusion: they give 8% damage reduction vs their speciality per level, ordinary protection gives 4%, and feather falling gives 12%. However, the reduction caps at 80%. Full Prot 4 gives 64% reduction to all sources, which means running three prot 4s and one specialized protection gives the full 80% against a specific type AND 48% against everything else. Three Prot 4s and an elytra is 48%. As such, so long as you wear a helmet, boots, and leggings with prot 4, the fourth level of feather falling is unnecessary (as it would bring you from 84% to 96%, both over the 80% cap). This is most important (to me) with Blast Protection, as end crystals basically deal only half damage. Instead of taking 36% (100-64) of the explosion damage (lethal from 4 blocks away if aimed well), you're only taking 20% (lethal from two blocks away). Other pvp stuff: Piercing goes through shields. Impaling only works against like, fish and guardians, it's not an all-purpose damage enchant.

It used to damage the armor by more than it was meant to (triple instead of double or something like that), and that was what was fixed in 1.16. Thorns still makes you lose durability faster than no thorns.

How you putting Flame lower than Fire Aspect? There's no downside to Flame, and it makes your bow do more damage due to the damage over time.

I’m confused by that as well. And the only major downside of fire aspect is it makes endermen a nuisance to kill, but arrows can’t hit endermen anyways so flame is doubly better. And same thing with punch and knockback. Why is knockback higher? The downside is it pushes enemies further from you, make mobs (especially skeletons) harder to kill. The bow is already ranged anyways so it hardly matters

A silk touch pickaxe is probably my most used item in the game. I always take a silk touch pickaxe to go mining and whenever I done I'll use my fortune pickaxe to mine all the ores whenever im safe and at my base. It also allows you to store a whole lost more ores because you aren't getting multiple of them because of fortune.

Pedantic, I know, but, post-1.17, fortune is better for conserving space as long as you are willing to carry a crafting table (or wood for a crafting table) as all ores can be made into compressed blocks now, including iron and gold. Even with fortune 3, any ore you mine (except lapis) will yield less than 9 drops on average, meaning that one ore block will, on average, become less than one compressed block. For example, according to the wiki, redstone drops 6 dust on average with fortune 3, meaning that 9 blocks of redstone ore yields on average 6 solid blocks of redstone. (For mining ore, silk touch is really only useful for nether gold ore, but it has plenty of other utility, such as getting lots of stone, or picking up ender chests, so it would still make sense to prefer it. I tend to bring two picks with me while mining, one with each enchantment.)

I kind of miss the days when youtubers saved their high level enchants for their videos because you used all 30- 40 or even higher levels on a random blind enchant. Getting fortune 3 or silk touch felt amazing! You won the lottery. And even though we all knew it was random, everyone had their own superstitions about which symbols were good luck. I hate mending on silk touch pick axes. I always end up having to carry it in my left hand while fishing or smelting ores, as it never creates xp by using it. 😝

In my opinion Piercing is a way for crossbows to have a sort of infinity, since you can pick up the arrows that have passed through mobs (if its not to many mobs that is) on top of that you can also put mending on it Making it pretty reliable (yes picking up the arrows after youre done shooting is anoying but more often than not youre going there anyway for the mob drops)

I really have to say, I like knockback 1 over 2. 2 sends them flying and out of reach vs the knockback 1 pushes someone back enough to where they cannot retaliate but let’s you keep combining if you want to. In both pvp and pve

Blast Protection is actually useful since most explosions are an instant kill at point blank range, however you only need 1 armour piece with it and the other 3 should be Protection. Since explosions are overpowered I’m giving it C tier for the countermeasure it provides, with good balancing via removing some normal protection to achieve greater blast protection

Lure just decreases wait time by up to 15 seconds per catch, which combined with Luck is pretty decent for fishing for treasure and XP. You get plenty books, bows, and rods, which you can even disenchant for more levels. Also, the return of the tier list is awesome 😎😎😎

If I’m not mistaken: Lure increases fishing speed and lowers treasure loot chance and Luck of the Sea increases loot treasure. Essentially with both Lure and Luck of the Sea, you get faster fishing with normal odds of treasure loot. Also, I’d say mending ruins vanilla Minecraft because you only ever make 1 gear set. You only mine 24 diamonds (for armor), you only mine 36 nether debris. The caves (and cliffs) update becomes useless very quickly because you lose all reason to go that deep into the mines outside of ancient cities and strongholds because you have that virtually unbreakable armor set. The addition to villager professions, grindstones, and 3 XP level enchants all work in tandem to degrades the intended mining experience. Seeing my armor at red brought me back into the mines and got my picking swinging from side to side.

Impaling is a solid F-teir. It's trident only and adds damage to a ton of aquatic mobs like turtles that you'd never want to fight. The only aquatic mob I would actually want to do more damage to is the drown, but they're undead so it doesn't affect them. At least Bane adds damage to mobs you actually would want to fight... Impailing gives you _nothing!_

Lure used to counteract LotS but was changed to only affect how quickly something is caught. Having both enchants is actually good now.

In No Man's Sky there was an update that nerved upgrades a lot. Before that I was immortal and after that I actually had to watch out for the sentinels. On first glance it's a really nice thing but having difficulty made the game way more fun. I feel the same way about enchanting. Fire and projectile Protection are useless because Protection on Netherite makes you immune to them anyway and blast protection isn't that much better either. Feather falling is the only one of the defence enchantments that just deletes something annoying.

Still pretty easy to be nearly invincible in nms though. I was actually thinking about nms too while watching this video, because I think it suffers from some of the same issues as Minecraft does. Mainly that it has many interesting features, but the implementation oftentimes is very superficial.

No man's sky and mc are different games. No mans sky is designed to have an aspect of PvE with the sentinels, and there should be some challenge, but mc is a game where you build stuff. I don't want to be in the middle of building a farm or something and just randomly die to a creeper at night.

I'm pretty invincible in No Man's Sky as well now but for a time I did have to watch my health more. In minecraft I also get annoyed if I can't build in peace but what I meant was more when you are in combat it doesn't feel nice. The question of when you should be is something else and I agree that there should be a way to have a mob proof base without light spam.

Basic Protection Adds +1 on each type of protection (Hits, fire, blast and Projectiles) only Basic protects from Hits (Golems, Endermans, Spiders, Zombies, tools, etc) Fire/Blast/Projectile adds +2 for their respective types all 4 armor with basic protection = +4 overall One of each type + one basic = +3 overall One dedicated Piece + three Basic = +5 for a specific Damage and + 3 overall Protection stack, and they dont influence Feather Falling

I'd go a little higher for fire aspect just because of the instantly cooked meat from animals. I don't like it for anything else though. Also. I like Fire Prot. I usually put it on just boots, protection everything else, and you can just swim in lava, as long as you have food.

The protection enchants are actually really interesting how they work behind the scenes. For instance Protection reduces more damage on leather armor than on diamond! Every level of prot gives 1 EPF (Enchantment Protection Factor), while the specific protections give 2 EPF specific to that damage type. EPF caps at 20 which equates to 80% damage reduction. So if you have Prot 4 on all 4 armor pieces you have 16 EPF of all types. But if you had Prot 4 on 3 pieces and say Fire Prot on your helmet, you have EPF 12 to all damage types, except fire which you have EPF 20. So there is an argument for mixing a single protection types to maximize damage reduction for a specific type of damage you're more likely to need. Feather Falling gives 3 EPF per level, so as long as you have Prot 4 on two pieces + Feather 4 you cap the EPF for fall damage. Also protection enchants are applied after the armors damage reduction (which is also capped at 80%), which is why all of the enchantments are actually more effective when wearing weaker armor! Fire Prot reduces the duration you are on fire by 15% per lvl. Blast Prot reduces knockback by 15% per lvl and the explosion resistance also applies to damage from beds/respawn anchors/firework rockets.

Raysworks has made an afk fish farm with skulk sensors. Also, with piercing, it allows you to infinitely use tipped arrows, so infinite potion effects, very useful

I feel a simple fix to balance this would be to give the enchantability factor of materials a limit to how many enchants, or give a hidden value to all enchants, and in turn give items a point limit. So say Aqua affinity uses 10 points and protection uses 8, diamond armor would have say 20 points max and gold would be 25 or something. So with this in mind you could give gold armor a purpose by making it good for having all utility enchants.

I remember seeing a video a while ago that talked about the different Protection enchantments and the optimal set. The answer was to either go full Protection IV or put Blast Protection IV on your boots (not sure if it has a greater effect there, but I know for sure that explosion damage targets your feet for some reason, which is why you take less damage if you place a block between yourself and the explosion) and the rest Protection IV. Blast Protection is actually super underrated at F tier - Projectile Protection deserves it though

I know you guys are both entirely Java edition players, but in Bedrock, tridents are a key component of all mob grinders and impaling adds damage to all mobs in water. So impaling ends up being up very important for most mob farms for increasing efficiency and output.

Protection IV gives 16% universal damage reduction while fire, projectile and blast resistance give 32% damage of their type reduction per armor piece. The limit in damage reduction of any type is 80% and they stack additively So 4 pieces protection IV gives 64% all damage reduction, but you could go for 3/1 with another type for 48% all and 80% on that type.

Crossbows can use damaging fireworks and can two shot with the highest damaging firework. There is a video done by Henwy a youtuber and he two shot a person in full enchanted netherite armour.

I disagree with Iskall that enchantments should be more mutually exclusive. The only effect it would have is that you'd clutter the inventory further with more armor pieces. Edit: I think playing without mending can be fun, but with the upcoming villager changes disposable tools need a constant supply of diamonds. Which I guess would be fine on HC but a pain for solo play or smaller servers.

For the sword, I would have Necrosis for normal living mobs (villagers, animals etc), Smite for undead, Bane for arthropods And then some new enchantment (maybe call it ironblade or something, named after the iron golem) for illagers and whiches. And then maybe have sharpness as a blanket low damage increase. Also you could add new enchantments to better balance the other enchantments, like withering touch, which would essentially give the wither effect for the same duration as fire aspect, be mutually exclusive with it but have undead mobs be immune to its effects.

The thing that's useful about [specialized] protection is that it has I believe double the damage reduction per enchant level for the type, a way higher cap, and each piece gets 1 extra max level. But as they pointed out, protection is still better because it works on everything. It's such missed potential because each specialized protection has a really useful niche. Yes, even fire protection can save you from lava.

In defense of afk farms, people who play solo and are end game need a way to aquire a vast amount of resources if they want to realistically build megabases in their world. I can understand afk farms being broken in multiplayer since there's always someone online. I strongly feel that this is something that should be taken into consideration when talking about afk farms.

it would be really cool if you could make armors for different things using enchantments like: different materials give different levels of slowness, so leather armor with protection would protect you without slowing you down (it would be add purpose to leather and chainmail armor

1 thing i wanna say bout piercing it's actually pretty good for pvp, like for 1, it does go through shield which in itself is Very good but also on top of that if u using like a tipped arrow u basically not loosing the arrow as much as long as u kept collecting it back up

projectile prot is the best of the prot enchants (other than the main one) you come across arrows more than explosions or fire damage, and projectile protection makes it so there is a chance that arrows just bounce off you (either that or it was server lag lmao) I sometimes rock full prot except for 1 projectile prot

Honestly, I do like how say channeling works, because like Iskal said, so many enchantments are overpowered. I absolutely love how you can only use it when there is a storm. It makes it so it isn’t overpowered, which I like.

Actually all the specific protections have an 8% mitigation percentage per level while protection has a 4% mitigation per level. This formula also applies to the specific dmg multipliers which have a 2.25 dmg multiplier while sharpness has a 1.5 dmg multiplier.

Yes but protection has an order of operation interaction that make it stack on top of other reduction effects. It does feather falling calculations then protection. So you get extra value. And it's true for all of them as far as I'm aware. The dmg dealing enchants obviously don't have these issues.

honestly i can think of a few weird edge cases youd want to use blast prot or projectile prot (dealing with specific mobs, tnt mining, etc) but fire prot? if im going into a situation where im expecting fire and lava, ill chug a few potions about it and keep my regular protection on.

So , i sometimes play a "Challenge World" (for me) in singleplayer where i collect a solid amount of blocks/items that i usually ignore. However i ban villager trading and end city loot (other then elytra), aswell as any anvil repairing, other then phantom membrane on elytra. So all Mending books i have are either lucky fishing or desert temple, dungeon,... so in average i play ~3 months in these worlds. In Average i get like 2 Mending Books. I noticed, the armor holds long w/ just unbreaking, the Pickaxe is the item u allways run out of and need to make new. Sword is painfull to remake because u need a ton of stuff (sharp, unbreak, looting, sweep,...). So imo w/o mending is fine in any long time world, but allow urself like 2 books on pickaxes and elytra each

i feel this could have been more like a grid, usability along one side and necessity/opness along the top. there were quite a few enchantments that they said were really good, but knocked it down due to how it was always taken. could also do idea vs implementation

Impaling is easily E teir because the only hostile mobs it works on is the 2 types of guardians. It does not even work on drowned because they are undead mobs, not underwater mobs.

Blast protection is a must have on the chest plate or pants. Only for hardcore mode tho xD Creeper deaths is the most common way to die, even full diamond protection 4

Respiration with protection eliminates a need for both water breathing and doors when raiding monument. You just have to bring bit more food and avoid tanking big bursts of damage (this is where trident actually helps)

As for the long-term world without Mending discussion: I believe I would still have fun. However, I do really enjoy End Busting. For me, if I started to run low on gear, it would be a reason for me to go End Raiding and gather up all the gear you loot from chests. In fact, for the better part of a year- When I die and lose my stuff, I grab my backup equipment, an anvil, and head to the End. I don't leave until I have a mostly max setup.

I love 1.7.10, for so many things, except for the mending. I love having it, and would hate if it was removed. Also, mending does not prevent breaking any tool. I remember my friend losing his pickaxe after forgetting to look at durability.

Fire protection is extremely good. Get fire prot 4 on all pieces of g3ar and jump in lava. You can literally swim in it. In my hardcore i have made nether specific gear because of this

Before mending existed (i.e. before 1.9), I actively disliked playing survival for a long time, because I knew that I would have to get new, nonrenewable equipment every now and then. Several diamond tools were available to be purchased from villagers, but I believe that things like shovels and hoes could not be. It's been a while, so I don't remember the full details of weaponsmiths, toolsmiths and armoursmiths. In any case, to me it was painful that a nonrenewable resource only had a finite lifetime. The addition of mending actually made me enjoy playing vanilla minecraft for long periods of time again. Frankly I don't care if it's balanced or not (I think it's fine) - for the way I like to play games, mending (or something similar) was a necessary addition.

On the whole Vault Gear not having durability, I'd say go for it for Season 4. It will make modifiers like unbreaking not a thing to worry about.

In 1.19 Lure no longer affects loot, it only affects time by reducing 5seconds between catches

Also, fire protection reduces the fire damage you take more than regular protection, and also you stop burning sooner. You will survive falling into lava longer with full fire protection vs full protection.

When it comes to Flame, one thing they didn't touch on is it cooks food for you without needing a furnace, so it works amazingly if you're doing a lot of exploration

fishing is cool. I get a lot of EXP with the extra enchanted bows and rods. On top of that, the fishing give us a lot of saddles and other treasures. With Silk Touch, it is the only way to get grass, crimson and wart netherrack without having to kill Endermen.

My thoughts on knockback, the only mob I get concerned about after the early game is creepers and knockback makes them much easier to deal with. (Shields don't stop creepers from blowing up part of your base.)

So, how protection enchantments work is just like armour points. Protection has a 1x multiplier, Feather falling has a 3x, and everything else has a 2x. When you take damage of that type, the protection-type enchantments that apply add up their values (e.g. a protection 4 helmet adds 4, a feather falling 4 pair of boots adds 12). Then, each of these numbers reduces the damage taken by 4% per point, up to 80%. This is multiplied with the armour points. So with protection 4 everything netherite armour, you get a 0.2x multiplier and a 0.36x multiplier for the damage, resulting in a total of 0.072x the original damage Note that it's actually less in practice because the armour points (but not protection level) lose effectiveness as the base damage of a single hit increases.

I'd say a world played without mending COULD be fun but only with small-scale projects in mind, otherwise it would quickly become annoying. I think it would be fun for the player to implement different strategies to have multiple occasions to get the resources needed for repairs, in ordere to prevent it being just a boring and repetitive chore. It basically comes down to the player's style of minecrafting (I'm thinking for example about how zedaph or joehills play vs someone like scar or impulse) but it can be interesting if executed well! Then again, for the latest survival world I've created I gave myself the rule to ONLY get mending with villagers and no other enchantment xD (and get the others straight form the enchanter). Maybe I'll try it in another world!

Lemme just say this. Fire Aspect WITH Knockback allows you to not get hit by the onfire mob and you'll have a lil bit more time to strategize on how to kill the mob without getting hit and it's STILL taking damage while it's knocked away.

i'd say swift sneak is more of a legs thing, because think about it: it's allowing you to move faster. you don't move your FEET to walk around, your feet just support your body to stand up. you move your LEGS to walk around

I fish all the time. I get enchanted books, enchanted fishing rods and enchanted bows as well as fish, rotten flesh and other things even without enchantments on the fishing rod. LURE helps to catch more fish for food and trading faster than without it and when you add in LUCK OF THE SEA you get everything faster, including treasure. I have tried LUCK OF THE SEA by itself but the time loss is substantial while the lack of specificity (fish / junk vs fish / treasure) is not really a detriment to me. :)

Yeah I think crossbows is a great item but bows are just better in most cases, But I’d like to emphasize that crossbows are surprisingly pretty versatile and well designed. When I first saw crossbows I thought it was gonna get overshadowed by bows(cause I thought it would just be a boring even more weaker bow ripoff) but it surprisingly has a lot of uses and it fits well with the combat of Java edition.

I agree with Iskall about a lot of things, but sometimes a thing can just be a straight up upgrade (like efficiency). Not everything needs to be a choice or have a tradeoff. Getting better gear is a part of minecraft. First in upgrading the material, and then with enchantments. Nobody stays at a wooden pickaxe, one of the first advancements you get is "Getting An Upgrade". I see enchantments as an extension of that. Not that I dislike choices, the infinity/mending thing is great. Worse armour actually being useful like gold for the nether is great too.

Regarding Iskall's poll @ 58:46, I don't think that playing without mending *for a longer period* (such as a Hermitcraft season) is more fun. While I don't know what it's like to play Minecraft as a job, I imagine that removing mending just adds an extra chore that will most likely not make it into a video anyway. As for personal play, I feel like mending is kind of in the same spot as elytra: not having it early-game is fine and there are alternatives (horses/minecarts vs elytra and repairing/new gear vs mending). But late game is not about the basic survival things anymore. It's about bigger projects: building nice-looking structures, engineering things with redstone, building farms, making minigames etc. Not having mending will only hold you back at that stage.

Fun fact, you can get around the too expensive limit by crafting a new pickaxe and merging it with your old one in an anvil. It's also a way to add new enchants to your pickaxe without books.
