The difference between the latter era Moore trailers and the Dalton ones is something else! And it's the 80s, of course there's epic, trailer voice over guy!

It's 2027. The teaser trailer for the new Bond film has been released. Calvin: "Good evening Mr. Bond fans, in this video I'll be watching and reviewing the brand new Bond teaser. This is the first time I've watched it, so I'm excited to experience it for the first time. I hear they've done something very interesting with this one that the fans have responded to pretty positively. Let's take a look!" * 1962 Bond theme plays * Calvin: 😑

@@calvindyson 24:16 -- Where the *#^%ing hell is THAT deleted scene ? Dalton looks mean and on his way to kill. It's between LAST night's ''I hope you don't snore, Q,'' and ''...Drug dealers of the world unite,'' which is the FOLLOWING night. We see nothing of Bond's DAY, where he sets out his plans. One really bad edit. Just seems like the same night !

If we use die another day as an example. The release between die another day and casino royal was was 3 or 4 years and Craig was announced as the next bond in I think 2005 then casino released a year later. And it’s been 3 years since no time to die. So I would say they’ll probably reveal the next bond possibly in 2024. Then the next movie will probably come out In maybe 2025

To fans who watch a lot of Bond films the 1962 Bond theme may be ‘the 1962 Dr No Bond theme’ but to the average person on the street it is THE Bond theme. It is the instantly recognisable Bond theme that the average cinema goer thinks of as the iconic theme which they also think is used in all the Bond films. In a trailer they only have a minute or two to hook the interest of the viewer so I think they used to lean heavily on the classic Bond theme as a quick, shorthand reference to remind the viewer of previous Bond films and give them an idea of what to expect from a new Bond film. It creates excitement and anticipation. I think this was especially important in Octopussy where they’re tying the film to the rest of the franchise and pointing out that this is the legit franchise which made all the previous Bond movies compared to Never Say Never Again which couldn’t use the Bond theme.

Interesting that they say Connery was playing “Ian Fleming’s James Bond” in the NSNA trailer, because the opening credits for NSNA only credit Fleming in the “based on an original screenplay by” credit - nowhere is he credited as creating the character. Indeed, I assumed Sean Connery was playing Kevin McClory’s James Bond in NSNA - after all, Kev did attest he created the filmic character James Bond.

By the time Timothy Dalton was cast as Bond, action cinema had gravitated towards the Stallone/Schwarzenegger/Willis/Gibson R-rated action era, so the trailers for the Dalton films definitely had to match the momentum for those kinds of films at the time, especially LTK

Yeah, sucks there was a lawsuit that caused the 6 year gap between Licence to Kill and GoldenEye. And therefore caused Dalton to resign as Bond. Otherwise he could've done another 2 films within those 6 years before Brosnan came on board with GoldenEye.

Agree but i'm thankful that his run was sweet, short but sweet. Would be sad if he did a third and it was bad, just look at Brosnan. His first two are great, third outing... i just find the movie (TWINE) boring and his forth and final... i actually prefer it over TWISE. Day Another Day is bad but atleast it's fun, it's bad but i can't help but have fun watching it. But Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies are great (especially Goldeneye)

As much as I love For Your Eyes Only (it was the first Bond film I saw), imagine how much more shocking it would have been if Topol was the villian? They tried to play up the mystery of the villain in an interview that they did while making the film, but I don't think it was really a surprise to anyone that it wasn't Topol ; he was probably considered too likeable to be a baddie, but it would have been fascinating if they had gone there.

People didnt give a monkey's about spoilers in the early 80s, you'd frequently see money shots from movies in the trailers, spoilers would be revealed in chat shows and I had the Marvel Marvel Comics adaptation of The Empire Strikes Back months before it was released in the cinemas imagine having THAT reveal being spoiled before the film came out it would cause an uproar today!

I suppose the original rendition of the Bond theme is the most iconic, that guitar riff and the blaring brass are instantly recognisable as the Bond sound, and the marketing department probably wanted to capitalise off of that. John Barry’s offerings around this time, more lush and orchestral with heavier use of strings, wouldn’t have worked quite as well I think. Don’t get me wrong, I love Barry’s 80s scores (along with everything else he wrote), but if you’ve only got 2 minutes to sell someone a Bond film, a violin won’t do - you’ve got to break out the electric guitar and play that surf riff. Also, the repetitious nature of using the same Bond theme rendition in each trailer wouldn’t be noticeable to a cinema audience watching these trailers every two years, so I suppose you can cut them some slack.
@calvindyson
@calvindyson 2 жыл бұрын
Very true, BenCol! I guess I’m just so used to hearing the theme on a regular basis but for cinema audiences in the 60s, 70s and 80s it’ll have been a real calling card for the announcement of a new film.

I feel like by this point too the series had made a major comeback and the movies were almost "nostalgic" by this point with their TV airings. They had to play the old theme for the good ol' times.

My favorite trailer from this decade is the teaser "License to Kill". The footage they shot just for easer is really cool. Love the electric stop watch Dalton has on and it then later turning into the title for the movie. Then my second favorite is the theatrical trailer for "A View To A Kill". Yes, the Duran Duran theme song does a lot of the heavy lifting, but its capped off with the questions it asks its audience, "Has James Bond finally met his match?" With AVTAK being the last of the Moore era, that really ramps up the excitement for its viewers. Love 1980's movie trailers, they certainly don't make them like they used to anymore.

you can certainly see the early 80's trailers still have that left over 70's feel and not just from Bond trailers but in all 70's trailers in general where they just show you random action bits with words over laying them and using a british narrator rather than American. By the time you get to the late 80's (and certainly in the 90's) they start slow and then build up to the exciting action moments by the end and they use (i don't know trailer mans name) an American narrator and they certainly have a alot more thought in their marketing for teasers and trying to be more up to date and with the times of other action movies. Tim Daltons delivery for his bond james bond and "better make that 2" is a better take i feel than what we got in the film. According to Oliver Harper you would get TLD and License to kill trailers on the warner home video cassettes a lot, especially with superman 4 and batman. Not sure if you already knew this man, but an unused Tim Dalton gun barrel part was used for the German trailers and it certainly has a Bob Simmonds feel to his jump :) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kMl0gduas5yXgoU.html. its a lot more clear here ofcourse kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9SkoZCkssrYdoE.html Does David Zaritsky have that black digital wrist watch timer thingy that Dalton has in the LTK teaser do you know??? I hope you get to do 007 VHS/ DVD/ BLU RAY trailers one day man :), especially the one we got on the 1996 goldeneye VHS. great as always :)

The american narrator you're thinking of is the legendary Don LaFontaine (RIP), whose name was synonymous with film trailer voices. And yeah, those are all great observations for the sea-change in trailer editing during the '80s. I think some of that comes from the general influence of MTV and music videos as they rose in popularity: Once you see that, the old style of trailers seems lethargic by comparison.

@@bigredjanie ahhh thanks for the name :). Good on MTV for doing that huh. but your right in terms of the editing yes. Bloody hell Dalton's trailers are good. They feel very modern, where's Moore's feel very "of their era", even still feeling very '70s in A View to a Kill. Hell, Dalton's trailers feel more timeless than Brosnan's, which are quite hard to separate from the '90s. Can't wait to see your thoughts on the '60s trailers!

23:00 Take me Calvin! I’d even dress up for the occasion! 🤣 But seriously, even though I stand atop my AVtaK pedestal to this day, those trailers were not fleshed out well. The Dalton ones jumped them a decade plus forward, but still felt totally the best of 80’s (major win). The 60’s bond theme did seem a bit outdated though, even by FYEO, and hearing it as late as the 90’s did give young me a little bit of the “what is this old music and what am I watching?” Vibe. And NSNA?… I need a shower. 😳 I didn’t know I got tickets to a sleazy 80’s Bond skinflick. I like the movie, but I may not have if I saw that trailer first…. Looking forward to the next trailer reviews!

13:15 I THINK the rationale behind using Roger’s early 70s gun barrel is because it was slightly timeless looking compared to the TSWLM era gun barrel which was dated since Roger’s flared trousers immediately dated it to the disco era - another subtle attempt at hiding his age since he was almost 60 around A View to a Kill’s release.

Those of us of a certain age loved the 70s & 80s trailers as you could buy them on Super 8 film and play them at home long before you could rent or buy VHS copies of the films. The fact that the trailers had plenty of spoilers was a good thing for us then as it was the only way to see and own Bond apart from cinema re-runs and event TV when ITV started to screen the Connery movies. Hard to believe for you youngsters but our generation used to record the movies to cassette tape or reel to reel so that we could listen to the recordings and picture the scenes in our minds. Oh what a godsend VHS was! Streaming, 4K, Blu-ray… it’s so easy to access and enjoy Bond these days.

From what I remember from back then is that most people would know about a movie coming out from a TV spot, not a trailer, and then if it looked good everyone would be talking about it, and when it came out everyone would go and see it. Most people would never see the trailer, and if they did, by the time the movie came out it would have been so long since they saw the trailer that if there were any kind of spoilers nobody would have remembered it.

The Timothy Dalton trailers were so good. I like that they used different voices in the trailers. The Dalton turn around in LTK is epic. Dalton is Dangerous.

I think Trailer voiceover man in For Your Eyes Only I think was Patrick Allen who was in The Sea Wolves and The Wild Geese with Roger. He was also the narrator for the UK Government nuclear emergency broadcasts “Protect and Survive” which he replicated on the Frankie Goes to Hollywood hit Two Tribes.

These trailers do seem to re-use the 1962 version of the James Bond theme quite a bit, but then again, this is the version everyone knows best. So maybe it's sort of a shorthand for "no matter how old the actor gets, or if we swap actors after a few years, it's still the same James Bond."

Great video! I love that Thee Living Daylight teaser tells the story of pre-credit action. Dalton is so good in those trailers, If his hair had been more ... timeless (and his second movie had attracted more Americans) I think we would have had a very different Bond history,

The AVTAK teaser deserves a little credit for the cool Maurice Binder special material at the very beginning. But agreed, The Living Daylights gave us the best of the full-length/theatrical trailers.

It didn't do well as it was released during a crowed summer in 89 [where Batman and Indiana Jones 3 dominated] and audiences were used to Roger Moore's lighter films, not this darker take. But it probably should have done better given drug warlords were among the villains in the novel 'Clear and Present Danger' which came out the same year and was the best selling novel of the 80's believe it or not so it should have been maximum topicality.

I distinctly remember a third trailer for “licence to Kill” in a MTV type cutting and pictures/ framing ***of the characters on the screen, with me in the cinema thinking “WTF is this?”.. I remember because LTK is a top three favourite of mine. *** I couldn’t make this up if I tried.🤨 Anyone else remember seeing this? I live in Australia so it could have been an “International “ trailer...

You mean this one... m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ps5mg8d7v9nYf2Q.html It also ends up resorting to the Month Norman theme that the other trailer did. There's also this T.V Spot... m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bt2pmbGbudi7XY0.html For all the arguments that some of the trailers felt old fashioned, this T.V ad feels like it's going too far the other way! It has a little bit of a "Batdance" vibe to it, which may have been intentional when you consider Tim Burton's Batman was breaking box office records at the time.

Calvin, you should do your own retro trailers for some of the newer Bond films. For instance, a QoS trailer where you just repeat “Quantum of Solace!” over and over again, in various ways.

Interestingly enough, there is another version of the ‘The Living Daylights’ trailer with the 60s music and Patrick Allen narrating: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ibViktx-xNapYGQ.html I think the one you saw was for America and the other was for the UK. I think I prefer the US version myself - Patrick Allen’s delivery sounds a bit too formal and old-fashioned, and the George Martin Bond theme works better (hopefully it’s not too sacrilegious to say I prefer the George Martin rendition to the classic Monty Norman/John Barry rendition!)
@DafyddBrooks

I agree i prefer the USA narration more. I think because I never grew up in the 60's or 70's, hearing a british narrator for a trailer just sounds unusual and I'm not really use to it

As I’m sure others here might’ve said, I love how they were able to get Peter Cullen; best known for providing the voice for Optimus Prime in Transformers, to do the U.S. trailer for A View to A Kill; especially when he says “Title song performed by Duran Duran”. Also, if I remember correctly, Roger Moore announced his departure from Bond after the release of A View to A Kill. So when it came to marketing and making these trailers, no one knew that it was going to be Moore’s last Bond. So they just stuck to the same trailer format they had done previously.

That music used in the Never Say Never Again trailer is soooooo 1983. As is the slow mo shots edited to it. I actually like it, it sounds quite Spandau Ballet. I think it's part of Michel Legrand and/or Herb Alpert's score.

Omg the bloody 1962 Bond theme all the time! I'm genuinely half jokingly/half seriously beginning to think it's something to do some 25 year clause by Monty Norman or something. As if it's written in black and white somewhere that they MUST include his version of the Bond theme for promotional material. It's fascinating watching you react to these trailers! I think seeing them all back to back just really hammers home the fact that EON productions has needed a desperate overhaul of their marketing department for over 50 years now...

I'd probably rank those trailers the same. I saw TLD teaser trailer back in December of '86 and loved it. Tim looked great and I always loved the LALD version of the Bond theme. The music in the NSNA trailer is pretty funny. I remember it from the TV spots as well. I have a soft spot for both OP and NSNA. I became hooked on Bond that year and got to see both films in the cinema. I have vivid memories of seeing those two films with my folks and our reactions. Great time to be a Bond fan I must say.

The Never Say Never Again trailer definitely was very weak, esp the music, but I still enjoyed the movie. I loved Babara Carrera as Fatima Blush. Her going down the stairs after getting the OK to kill Bond is one of my favorites. She exudes a sexuality there that few Bond females did. Klaus Marie Brandauer was the better Largo. Something interesting bout a lot of the 70s & 80s trailers with the gun barrel logo, they used blue instead of red for some reason.

Yes! NSNA(1983) trailer was very weak, but the film was quite good! Thanks to mr. Connery, of course! And some scenes very also great: "Bond and Q", "Bond vs. Fatima Blush", "Motorbike chase" and so on... Better Bond than Craig movies at least!

They are playing the Bond theme as this is synonymous with James Bond. You have to remember this was a time when a theme tune to a character or film automatically made you think of that brand, like the Jaws theme tune made you think of sharks, the Bond theme tune automatically made you think of Bond. I don't think anyone differentiated that it was 'Dr No'.
