Elantris was a good intro to a trilogy that hasn't happened. I feel like the next 2 if they get written have potential to be amazing. And I enjoyed Elantris on it's own. Compared to other fantasy I can see how its just kind of meh, but again I think the sequels could do a lot to elevate it.

I do love all mistborn books, but I would say that my favorite is "well of ascencion", for the journey the characters take to find out what's really happening just blew my mind. Nice video, you and other fantasy books youtubers actually made me buy a kindle to start reading stormlight archive! (there is no printed version where I live in and importing them to my country is actually more expensive then buying a kindle)

Here's my ranking as of now: 01. Oathbringer (not finished, subject to change). I love this book. A lot of what I see surrounding it is general dislike of Shallan and her sleuthing plot, but honestly, I love it and I love how her psychosis is completely messing with her sense of identity. Also, the Dalinar flashbacks...dear god, that scene in The Rift was heartbreaking. 02. Well of Ascension. This book gets a lot of crap for being slow. I don't even remotely care. The character building (especially between Vin and Tensoon) and the deconstruction of Elend's idealism was absolutely brilliant. That last battle sequence is challenged only by the ending of Way of Kings imo. 03. Way of Kings. This book is absolutely friggin brilliant. Kaladin is one of the best characters I've ever read. The ending battle when Dalinar gets betrayed was amazing. The chemistry in Bridge Four is amazing. Ugh it's all so good. 04. Words of Radiance. And just when you thought the flashbacks couldn't get any more tragic than Kaladin's in comes Shallan to fucking ruin your day. I loved everything about this book. It's so damn good. 05. The Hero of Ages. I really disliked most of this book because it meandered so much in the first half, but once we got to that ending, all of that was erased completely. Those last few scenes were soooooo beautiful, and the resolution to all of the characters' plots were brilliant. As for the rest of them, I've already written an essay on the top 5 so here's the remaining ranking: 06. Warbreaker 07. Edgedancer 08. The Final Empire 09. Shadows of Self 10. Alloy of Law 11. Bands of Mourning 12. Elantris Haven't read White Sand of any of the short stories yet aside from Edgedancer, so I can't place them, and I'm about 200 pages from the end of Oathbringer so its ranking might change.

I respect the essays 😆 I loved Oathbringer, but the last chunk didn’t pay off for me like the previous two. I thought Dalinar’s backstory was amazing and the beginning with Kaladin going home was so emotional, but the ending of the book wasn’t...idk, it wasn’t as good imo as the previous two. Also, I enjoyed the split personality elements of the story (is “enjoyed” a morbid way to put it?). I felt their time in the cognitive realm last way too long without a whole lot happening, though, which-to me-made it feel like they just needed to be out of the picture since they’re all so strong. Also, the other thing that annoyed me I can’t say cuz it’s a spoiler 😮

@@ebnovels I agree that the ending was rather anti-climatic and the three characters triangle is disappointing at best if that is actually the end result. However I think that while Oathbringer definitely has it's highs and lows, the highs are so good that they bring it up to being my second favorite of the Cosmere books (after the Way of Kings). I really enjoyed how there were several battle scenes during the book, so we weren't forced to wait for one at the conclusion, there were "release" points per-say. My heart broke at the middle battle scene as well, I actually shed real tears while listening to the audiobooks!

Warbreaker is so weird for me. I loved it for 95% of the book. But then the climax was just a lot of things being explained to us (with a couple of really freaking cool moments of course) and then it just ended. There was no denouement. The antagonist explained their plan and then lost. And then it ended. I was just shocked. Especially for a book that was written to be a standalone. The lack of resolution was so frustrating. That said, I did really love everything about Denth, and Vivenna's growth as a character was fantastic and resulted in her being my favorite.

Still have the Mistborn era 1 & 2 in my TBR list of the 2 remaining Stormlight Archive books. The Way of Kings is by far by number 1 all time favorite book I’ve read. The character depth and emotions that Kaladin goes through feels as if Sanderson was writing about myself and tragedy and difficulties I faced in life. The relatability of the characters makes it one of the best I’ve ever read! My all time favorite author by far!

Hey, thanks for this list. I only recently got into Sanderson but am loving what I've been reading so far. I decided to read Mistborn era 1 first and am going to move on to Stormlight after. I'm currently about 3/4 of the way through Well of Ascension and can say, without a doubt, I enjoyed The Final Empire more. That being said I'm still seriously enjoying Well of Ascension. I can't wait to dive into Hero of Ages though, as you're not the first person I've heard say it's the best book in the trilogy. I was surprised to see you put Stormlight under Hero of Ages though. Pretty much all the reviews I've read, as well as watched, have called Stormlight Sanderson's best work. However, Hero of Ages is the climax and ending to a story where as the first three books of Stormlight are just the beginning. Kinda hard to compare the beginning of one story to the end of another. I'm sure when we finally get the ending to Stormlight it's going to be something very special.

Thoroughly enjoyed this video as I also have conflicting feelings towards ranking Sanderson's books from my least favorite to favorite. Nonetheless, The Hero of Ages and the first era Mistborn trilogy are, for sure, my favorite books of all time haha. Yes, same! I also think what Sanderson was able to do in three books was incredible. I’ve still never found a trilogy that does as much as what those three books do. In a genre filled with really long series that can sometimes drag, it makes it stand out :)

I feel the same way about Elantris. I read it the same way you did, Stormlight first. It’s like you could see his building blocks of how he constructs and executes a story which he makes more fluid in his later works! And yeah, Oathbringer (despite me loving it) was my least favourite Stormlight book. It was very politics oriented, like moving characters around a chess board. So I’m hoping the next instalment will have a tonne more action!

I feel like Oathbringer opened up the world to a point that I NEED to read more. I agree that the ending wasn’t quite an ending, but I’m okay with it because at book 3, you’re expected to be in for the long haul at this point. We are in the midst of an all time great series.

My ranking so far is: #1 Final Empire #2 Hero of Ages #3 Well of Ascension #4 Elantris. I'm really enjoying Warbreaker so far, and I think it may well fit in at #2 once I've finished it.

Elantris was the first book he sold to a publisher. I think that's part of the reason why it's not as polished. I liked it -- I thought the story was very creative, but I agree with you that it's not the same level as his later books. I actually haven't read many of these books. My 2 favs of his are both short stories: Perfect State (science fiction), and The Emporer's Soul (fantasy). Good vid!

I read the Cosmere books in the order Mistborn (1st era), Warbreaker, Elantris, Stormlight Archive, but I think the ranking wouldn't differ if I'd read them in another order. 1. The Final Empire (I loved the way how the ending has been already made quite clear in the prologue. Plus, I adore the characters and the way the magic system was introduced.) 2. The Hero of Ages (best ending of a trilogy ever, nothing else to say. The pacing is a little weaker than in the 1st book imo) 3. Elantris (I'm perfectly able to ignore the weaker writing in this book, because I love Raoden and Sarene so much. Raoden's storyline resembles Kaladin's a lot but he isn't in constant self-pity which makes it slightly better for me) 4. Warbreaker (really enjoyed the story although it isn't the most surprising one. But Vivenna definitely is the best!) 4. Words of Radiance (Yes, number 4 again. I have big issues how the character arcs in the Stormlight Archive series mesh with each other and the overall threat the world of Roshar has to face. I think in this one Sanderson manages all storylines the best and there is a constant flow in the narration, most likely because the protagonists start interacting with each other and develope their dynamic, which kinda stagnates in Oathbringer) 6. The Way of Kings (the first half is slower than it could've been. Plus, we don't get to see enough of Adolin's character and the way he is likely to influence the upcoming plot.) 7. The Well of Ascension (the pacing was a little off sometimes and I didn't like the subplot with a certain other mistborn we get introduced to. It felt like a lot of wasted potential to me.) 8.Oathbringer (the relationships in this one are so weird... Also, the whole Shadesmar thing dragged on and on with no real purpose. And that thing with Adolin that was mentioned one time in the last chapters and was resolved in like one second, while Kaladin still constantly blames himself for his brother's death, although it actually has been resolved in his Spider-Man-2-esque struggle in Words of Radiance, so yeah, the balancing between the characters was a bit off. That also showed when Moash had like 4 chapters, then none for about 350 pages until we were to feel something during that action-packed midpoint of the book, which I didn't because he was emotionally just too far away for me.) I excluded Edgedancer because it's a nice addition but not comparable to the full-length novels. I also still have to read the 2nd Mistborn era. Sanderson definitely is one of my favorite authors, but I think even he struggles with writing overly long books. Apart from that, I'm highly intrigued by the whole Cosmere. It just makes so much sense and I love nothing more than learning the rules of a magic system and a fantasy world to anticipate (and also be suprised by) the outcome.

So. When I first got into Sanderson it was because he was the author announced to take over WoT (my number one favorite series). I went out and bought Elantris to see if I was going to be able to enjoy his writing style, and honestly, I was HOOKED. Sure, looking back I can see that Elantris is not as polished as his later stuff (SA OMG) but it is such a great book on its own!

The well of accention Reasoning. I love elantris the premise, the magic system, the story and characters, i was never board when reading it. SA is just a masterpiece, there's nothing to say here, only that the 3rd one was a little bit below the level of the first 2. Warbreaker is obviously an amazing book, but I liked elantris a lot more, and of course it doesn't compare with the SA. MISTBORN I liked the first book a lot, but the second book is a little boring at times, especially some of the lesser fight scenes are just redundant its all "she pushed on the coin and so on". This is my own opinion I understand most of you feel differently.

So the first thing you mentioned that I really disagreed with was Oathbringer, particularly when you mentioned that Sanderson's signature climactic checkov's armory going off was underwhelming compared to the others. Because for me this was the one that had me jumping up and down screaming 'oh shit oh shit... but it can't get worse... IT GOT WORSE OH SHIT' for the entire setup to the climax. And that made the characters turning things around, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat through transcendent character development, probably the most satisfying finale I ever read. And the way the character's growth and development tied into the climax without it being at all forced was incredibly clever. I was also surprised to see the Mistborn Second Era books so low, for me they're on par with Warbreaker. Though Warbreaker does indeed edge them out. Wayne is indeed a bit much at times, for everyone. But I think part of the reason I like them so much is that the stakes are lower and the world is smaller. They're, like, the same scale as Indiana Jones rather than catastrophic threats to the entire Cosmere. It's a nice change of pace. I liked the first Mirstborn book best, in a lot of ways for similar reasons. It is 'only' about a group of magical thieves scheming to overthrow an invincible god king. I like the sequels, and the epic story that unfolds is fascinating, but it's not quite the same. It's like how episodic shows can be a change of pace from miniseries. All that said, I do agree that Secret History is solidly the worst. There are interesting tidbits in it, lorewise, but the story itself? Nah.

I think I'd rank Oathbringer the same as on your list simply because I didn't care much for the relationship between a certain three characters. At first the abrupt conclusion of their relationships at the end really made me wonder what was going on, but I guess looking back I can understand that between some of them there wasn't anything more than fascination and kinship with eachother. I would rate Oathbringer above WoR due to the fact that Sanderson went into the backstory of my favourite character which really made me like him even more considering everything that he went through, and said character finally had his massive breakout moment near the end of the book which made me grin like an idiot, whoop out in joy and earn a few weird looks from the other people on the train 😄

Yes, the story is divided into 2 arcs of 5 books each with a gap of 15 years between the events of book 5 and book 6. Each of the Stormlight novels takes around 2 to 3 years because they are so damn huge. So you might have to wait for around 5-6 years for the first arc to end and then another 12 years approximately for the second arc to end.
