Great show. ZZ Top rules the roost here, but I dig Foghat a lot as well. And obviously, as a guitarist solo act, Pat Travers as well. One thing though... I ADORE the "studio side" of FANDANGO! Man, if only it had been a full studio album. It would be my #1 going away! Over the great Tres Hombres and Deguello. But while the songs "Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings," "Heard It On The X," "Tush" and "Mexican Blackbird" are all fantastic (most esp the first two there!), "BLUE JEAN BLUES" is as well! So much more than your typical blues trope song: Its completely badass in every way! Not the least of which within those killer, witty lyrics! The song's hypnotic feel nails it! And then Billy Gibbons soloing is absolutely exquisite!! Like Ace Frehley and Angus Young on their earlier work, Gibbons solos are tasty and delightful "songs within themselves." So, the reason im here saying this is because I "think' I heard Peter say, "...forget Blue Jean Blues." ???? Man, Pete, i dunno. You didn't even mention the other killer songs off this album, so maybe in your old age, you could've thought that BJB was part of the live half!?! The Olds strikes again, I hope? If not, then shame on you. Any great guitarist knows how brilliant and fantastic that song is! Its simply one of the greatest blues songs ever written. Especially by way of lyrics and the marvelous, brilliant guitar! Marc ⚡

Thank you so much guys! I see I need a few more ZZ Top’s! Great grouping, yes Travers does fit in nicely with Zz and Foghat. I completely agree with both of your critical appraisal of Foghat 1980 and forward - and Foghat was my FAVORITE band from 13-15 years old which ended with Boogie Motel whose tour was my first rock show; I couldn’t drive yet so older brother took us. It was a rite of passage lol!

I am stunned that Tejas was so high. Alongside El Loco, they are easily the weakest albums for me. Afterburner on the other hand is a cracking follow u to Eliminator and as far as it being Eliminator II, what else would you expect coming off the back of the massive success of the new style? Foghat of the 70's were a force and in more recent times they have come u with some great new stuff. The first thing that I ever heard from Pat Travers was Snortin' Whiskey live, which was a stone cold classic. However, from there, further ventures into his catalogue resulted in quite steep downturn, so after a couple, I spent my money elsewhere. His voice wasn't quite up to the job half the time and felt out of place with some of the music. Most of my top 10 would likely be ZZ-Top, with 3 from Foghat.

Afterburner is great, one of the best and most fun and successful albums of the 80s, and is better than most albums on this list including the weaker El Loco, it’s rated higher on rateyourmusic than half these albums for a reason. No world exists where it’s worse than these weak Foghat and Pat Travers albums. I already left a comment saying a similar thing if you want to check it out,. It’s just as good as Eliminator if not better, and i’ll never ever understand the hate then again it sold more than 99% of albums on this list, half of which ended up in discount bins for a reason so we are actually not in the minority

This is the first of these videos that I own all the albums. Those Foghat albums after Boogie Motel are strange because they're not great, but they're still somehow enjoyable to listen to. I think it's because Foghat always had a sense of fun in what they did. My top five would be: 5) Foghat - Night Shift 4) Pat Travers - Black Pearl 3) ZZ Top - Deguello 2 & 1 tie) Foghat's Fool for the City and ZZ Top's Tres Hombres

Not heard all that much Foghat or ZZ Top but for me nothing will top Pat Travers "Making Magic". Was Pat ever as big here in the UK as he was on the other side of the Atlantic? A very much under appreciated guitarist. The basic problem for any artist that has a lengthy career is that if they produce a lot of similar product they are accused of being boring and repetitive but if they try something a bit different they are accused of chasing trends and courting popularity. Can't win!

Popoff and Pardo are at it again with another of the blender episodes with a new batch of artists. My library does not include the depth and width needed to attempt the herculean task of ranking these 20 albums, but like Pete and then Martin, the top of the personal list would be ZZ Top with Tres Hombres taking the lead. Thanks has to be given to my oft-mentioned older brother for bringing that album into the house upon its release and once again told me - as only an older brother can - "You have GOT to hear this!" Thanks to Martin and Pete for continuing to make these episodes so entertaining and looking forward to the one scheduled for next week. There ya go!

Energised is my favourite Foghat album, despite the weird production on Dave Peverett's voice that makes it sound like he's singing through a megaphone. Makin' Magic might not be the best Pat Travers album but it is almost the first record I ever bought and I like it more than the rest for nostalgic reasons :) El Loco is one of those albums where on the record a lot of the songs are just 'meh' but when you see them played live they come to life 'Pearl Necklace' and 'Party on the Patio' were barnstormers in particular.

Yes, some El Loco love. I like the weird experimentations they did on this album. The mumbly nonsensical vocals on Ten Foot Pole, the utterly odd Heaven, Hell or Houston, the funkiness of Groove Little Hippie Pad, then the two popular nudge nudge, wink wink songs about sex, Tube Snake Boogie and Pearl Necklace.

I tend to agree, Foghat comes in at #3 of these three bands for me as well & a Savoy Brown grouping makes total sense (maybe with Black Cat Bones/Rod Price? There are also Molly Hatchet connections). The story of Roger Earl auditioning for the Jimi Hendrix Experience is interesting. And their Fool For The City to me is SO much better than any other album of theirs - almost like another band recorded it! I'm not as enamored of ZZ Top as many - I think they're a good band with a few really good albums (Tres Hombres, Deguello, Eliminator, El Loco) & a few OK albums (Tejas, Afterburner, Recycler)...To me Pat Travers kills it in this 'matchup' in terms of quality albums - at least 9 very good ones & that's not counting at least 4 excellent live records (Live at the Iridium NYC, Live! Go for What You Know, Rockpalast 1976 & King Biscuit)

If it is on ZZ Top 6 pack collection, you have the messed up versions of the songs. You guys should know this, if you don't. Maybe research it and make a video on it.

I like Foghat but maybe not as much as some - for me Fool For The City is SO much better than anything else they did. Overall he's got the most great music of these three so his albums dominate my top rankings...So my rankings are: 1. Makin' Magic, Radio Active 2.
