It should’ve been the zenith of his career… On a fateful night backstage in Knoxville, Tennessee in the summer of ’77… Instead…it was a coup de grace that led to his exit from the supergroup he helped create. Randy Meisner of the Eagles was allegedly too sick to sing his encore spotlight classic rock hit Take it To The Limit with its legendary high note finale. He and Glenn Frey got into a shouting match backstage on the Hotel California tour that night and it got really ugly when Randy punched Glenn in the face. Police tried to break it up but Don Henley called them off. The story behind the song that was the crowning achievement for one of the most beautiful voices of the 70s, and the infamous incident that centered around one of the most recognizable songs in Classic Rock history that sealed this artist’s fate as a member of one of America’s greatest bands… and a tribute to the late country-rock pioneer who’s high harmony helped bring so much depth to Eagles classics like Take It Easy and Witchy Woman is next on Professor of Rock

So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. But for whatever reason, be it radio play, lack of marketing, label support, or just sheer stupidity, the song came up short. On previous episodes, we have covered Sara by Fleetwood, Reelin In the Year by Steely Dan, and Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty. Today it’s a band who has had their share of #1 hits but this is one that is a no-brainer and one of their most beloved songs… it comes from the amazing Eagles… again One of the most successful bands of the Rock Era, was also one of the most tumultuous.
During the group’s rise to international superstardom, the clashes between the band members were legendary, especially between the four co-founders of the group: Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner. Leadon couldn’t stomach the constant friction and hated the musical evolution of the band away from its country-rock roots.
His discontent came to a head in 75 during one of those notorious backstage blowouts when he got into a heated argument with Frey and poured a bottle of beer over Glenn’s head. Bernie thought a few months' hiatus from the Eagles would smooth things over, but the rest of the band vetoed, and Leadon was gone shortly after the dousing. Two years later, tired from non-stop touring and nonstop fighting, Randy Meisner, snapped and had his infamous altercation with Glenn Frey that led to HIS departure from the Eagles at the end of the Hotel California Tour.

@TheSjuris No Felder sued Eagles LTD because he was illegally fired. He was an officer of the corporation who couldn't be fired. Fry & Henley also cheated him from royalties he was entitled too.
@TheSjuris
@TheSjuris 10 ай бұрын
@@lylecampbell9036 everyone can be fired. Royalties were from 2 items released in the late nineties. Felder is nothing without the Eagles. He probably lost more money by suing then by touring. He also failed to understand that rock groups aren’t democracies they are usually run by one or in this case 2 members who contribute most of the songs. The Eagles were established by Henley and Frey. Felder shouldn’t have been a corporate member either. Drugs and alcohol brought the band down in the 70’s.

I worked at the Sheraton Universal while Randy Meissner did a long-term stay. He would get bored and come down to chat with front desk staff, primarily me. He was so sweet. He told me that he would have been happy in a moderately successful band. He really loved being a studio musician. Hotel California launched the Eagles into the stratosphere. He was suddenly in a very hot band and the stress made him snap. He was shy. He was private. He wasn't really built for the cameras, the constant interviews and the pressure. As the Eagles became more and more successful, the stress ended his marriage and wrecked his spirit. My favorite of his songs was "Try and Love Again." His marriage was over and he was afraid to look for someone else. I really liked him. He acted like a big brother. All of Eagles came to visit him, but he warned me not to accept a date from Don Henley. He said Don was trouble.😊

Thanks - that's a cool story. It's easy for us fans to forget how human our music heroes are. They're just like us and the people we know, for better or for worse. It sounds like he was generally the nice guy in the Eagles, but he never knew he was bipolar in those days, so he had to be unpredictable. Punching a bandmate is a possible sign of a manic episode. So is indulging all night. But it sounds like the nice guy was who he really was - his genuine self. I'm glad he eventually got his diagnosis with enough time to enjoy a few years without that hanging over him. And I'm glad you got to know him when he was his true, gentle self. What a gift! If you're interested, I've got experience with another bipolar musician (no one famous, though he deserved to be - an extraordinary songwriter and musician). He was a former bandmate. He jumped off the stage and beat the crap out of a guy at a small bar gig. He was a really gentle person and a good friend. It was shocking and incredibly out of character for him. He spent the night cooling off in jail, and over the next few days he told each of us (by phone) he had a gun and he was going to kill us, including my wife. Obviously the band was done, and I never saw him after that. He was never diagnosed, but he wrote in his songs about his pattern of getting a good thing going then messing it up. I didn't connect the dots until a few years later when I bumped into his close friend, and he told me how awful the guy felt about what he'd done, and that he'd done things like that many times before and didn't know why. Five years later he took his own life, never knowing it was (in my opinion) a simple illness with a simple treatment. I really miss him. He was a good friend and an extraordinary artist.

I talked about only his good side. A room service waiter came back from delivering food to Randy. He looked astonished. He told me Randy offered him a tip OR his choice of drug. The long dresser was covered in drugs that were neatly categorized and in their own section. A doorman told me Randy was driving his car in the parking structure - backwards. It was 2am. He went up and down every level over and over again. Doormen were freaked out because there were some extremely expensive cars in the valet parking. He never hit a car. But he was good and generous to employees there. Everyone loved him.

Nice tribute, Prof! Thanks. I knew Randy very well in HS, and played keys for several years in Randy's first band, the Drivin' Dynamics out of Scottsbluff, NE. We toured a 4-State area with a really good following, in part due to our ads on 50,000 watt KOMA out of Oklahoma City. Kids all over the Midwest with no access to R&R music on the radio, tuned in to A.M. 1520 when it got dark and the signal spread out. Randy was very funny, always joking around, and a real showman on stage. Great memories. It is true Randy was humble, a typical friendly farm kid, and very talented, indeed. So sorry to know of his passing. RIP.

I’m 65 and from Kimball and wow did you bring me back to listening to KOMA at night with my headphones on under my covers so my parents wouldn’t see how late I was up. Is there any kind of tribute to Randy in Scottsbluff? If there isn’t, there should be!!! Thanks @Steve09865 for your post, did your band play at NE county fairs? I have a memory of watching Drivin’ Dynamics at the Scottsbluff County Fair in Mitchell.

@@whocares5830 Great to hear from another Panhandle guy. Those were the days. KOMA was all we had back then, and that station was very important to the success of the Dynamics. As far as a tribute to Randy in Scottsbluff, there used to be a display on the wall of the local restaurant (Chili's), and Randy is buried in the family plot in the Gering cemetery. I visited the grave a few months ago and it appears that someone stole the metal plate embedded in the ground. As far as a real tribute, there is an amazing, very complete website called Randy Meisner, A Retrospective that you can Google. Complete history of his life, including a ton on the Dynamics. Highly recommended.

Oh my goodness, this is my favorite video you’ve ever made. I’m 45, so Eagles were almost at their end when I was born. But I have a sister 10 years older than me, another 20 years older, and my mother was 40 years older. I was lucky to have all of their music in our house all the time. Records were always playing. And my sister (the oldest, 20 years older than me) loved Eagles. Take It to the Limit was one her favorites, and it was one of those that broke my sensitive child heart. I still cry when I hear it. I’ve recently revisited Eagles and now they are one of my favorites. I love them, but I hate losing these legends, because I know we will never hear this kind of artistry in music again. My biggest wish now is to see those who remain in their farewell tour. Thank you again, Adam. You paid beautiful tribute to a wonderful artist and song in a way only you could.

Back when I was around 19 years old, I wasn't much of an Eagles fan. When Hotel California came out, I thought it was overplayed on the radio. The Eagles came to play at the college campus where I live, a friend and I got in free after the concert started and when Randy sang Take it to the Limit, I was stunned. Rest in Peace, Randy. Thanks so much for your wonderful tribute to the incomparable Randy Meisner, who was by far my favorite member of The Eagles. There was something other worldly and ethereal about his voice that brought you to a place that few others could when you heard him sing. I was fortunate enough to see him perform with The Eagles in the 70s and his voice as he sang that signature song sent you soaring. When he left The Eagles, I was sad enough to note it in my diary, and I always felt that a lot of the heart and soul left the band after he did. When I heard about Randy's troubles over the years, it was very disheartening, especially the tragic situation regarding the death of his wife. His recent passing makes me very sad, but at least he is at peace now. Although he did not seek the limelight as much as some others might, he just wanted to play good music, I hope he left this world with the knowledge that he did make a difference in this world and many of us are thankful that he did. 20:51

Hey Adam, I wanted to say Thank You to you for doing this video on Randy so soon after his passing. Doing these unfortunate 'passing of' videos are great because you put your heart and soul into them. I wish you would get more recognition for them!!! You do them with class and truly honour the artists they are about. This is the first time I've seen you do one so soon after, and hope you can continue to do them this soon after in the future. Randy Meisner was an instrumental part of the EAGLES,. A very melodic bass player with an incredible vocal range that got side lined by ego's in the Eagles because of him pounding Glenn Frye that night, and that punch was, no doubts deserved, as I've talked to different musicians, in my previous touring career in music, that have worked with Frye and Henley, and the stories of the ego's both have in recent years would have been challenging for the other members of the Eagles then. I made the following comment on the passing of Paul Ruebens, 'Pee Wee Herman', that was posted here on KZfaq that rings true with musicians as well: "At almost 52, All of the performers and musicians that have been part of my life...are leaving us. Makes me realize even more how short our time here is. All of them seemed immortal to me, and now I see daily how immortality is only an invention of our own minds so we can hold on to what our lives have been." I feel that same way with musicians of bands I grew up with, some that I was even lucky to have worked with or met, as well as actors and actresses. I have been both fortunate and lucky to have worked with what so many people call 'Stars', (which to me are just ordinary people), in my previous career as a Stage Manager, Instrument Technician, and Road Manager. I wasn't limited to working just in music and also worked in film and theatre in many different positions and roles. I'm grateful to have had the life I did, and even became friends with some of them that to this day I keep in touch with. Some you have done videos about and brought the memories rushing back for me. When you do videos on musicians I have worked with, it brings so many incredible memories back, all of which I am so grateful for having the life I have had in the Entertainment Industry. Your channel here on KZfaq, means something to many of your viewers, because it's our childhood and our past which made an indelible mark on who we are as people, in the same way your Dad left his mark on you and your love of music that you share with us. SO, THANK YOU ADAM (PROFESSOR OF ROCK) - a title you surely deserve. Your knowledge and depth of information, and love of music makes you, in my eyes, A Person with a MASTERS DEGREE in the HISTORY OF MUSIC. I live in western Nebraska and often sing karaoke in bars in Scottsbluff and in Mitchell were Randy owned a house. Unfortunately, I never met him as he did not spend a lot of time there in the last decade. Despite this, Randy's connection to his birthplace was never in doubt. Many of the iconic images of the Eagles feature Randy wearing his Frank Implement T-shirt. This yellow shirt with a green John Deere logo was from a hometown business. He certainly had the means to dress fancier, but that just wasn't Randy. A simple soul with an amazing voice.

I completely agree with every comment, there will never be a greater, more talented band than The Eagles. Incredible singers whose harmonies were pure musical chemistry, legendary guitarists and songwriters with every member having a natural gift of understanding melody. The sum of their parts was only bettered by their overall greatness. I’ll give the Beatles credit for inspiring Glenn and Don Henley as they both stated that but the Beatles don’t compare to The Eagles, in fact nobody comes even close. We were so blessed to grow up with their incredible music as a backdrop to our lives and Ill be forever grateful for seeing their perfection live thirty eight times, so good in fact that the first time I saw them live, I had to pinch myself that I wasn’t hearing the actual recording. “How can they be so good” was my original thought at the time, and I’m still amazed at their perfection and professionalism. I’m obviously biased yes, but I stand by every word.

My favorite Eagles song. I was blessed to see their '77 tour at 15 years old and I still remember when they played "Limit" and the auditorium erupted. Thank you, Randy for decades of memories and an angelic voice. Hopefully, you and Frey are jamming up in Heaven.

Well done as always. Randy was so special. Without him, there would never have been The Eagles. Their music was a major mainstay of high school life in the 70s. Desperado, Tequila Sunrise, Witchy Woman, Takin' it Easy, etc. I lamented their shift away from the countrified sound of their roots behind Linda, and I know that Randy did as well. It was one of the early conflicts within the group.

I took my mom to an Eagles show at the Forum in LA once. She got to meet Don Henley after the show and it was one of the great "nights to remember." When she passed at 90 in 2016, I found among her things the little black evening bag she had carried that night - with the ticket stub still inside. So grateful to have been gifted with the love of music by Mom and her mother. Eagles were Mom's favorite. If Dad tried to talk while she was listening and singing along with her lovely voice - boy, look out! NOTHING anyone has to say is more important than feeling the goosebumps from Take It To the Limit - one more time. RIP Randy. 🙏🏻
