I saw Phil Keaggy at a solo performance in West Palm Beach and his electric guitar performance was otherworldly.

I saw Phil perform a solo acoustic show. Blew me away. I'd love to see him play electric, too. I have lots of Phil's solo stuff, both acoustic and electric on CD.

Thanks for doing this ranking Pete. I always thought that Harp deserved more love than they got. My guitar player and I were fortunate to be able to do a lot of stage teching for them during their reunion years of the mid 90s and early 2000s. Phil,John, and Dan,are 3 of the most personable, finest classiest musicians that I have ever come into contact with.. I would suggest to you to bend You ears to some of Phil's solo albums from the 90s and early 2000s ,Find Me in these Fields, Sunday's Child, Blue, and 220 are all outstanding and many have John Sferra from Harp playing drums with him. Lee Sklar has done a couple great videos about his experience playing with Phil. Glass Harp were saddled with the Christian tag, but they were more than that. They were three very athletic young and unique musicians. Playing some of the most unique music of their time. And yes they although all of their albums have something to like for most musicians, the best way to experience them is in a live setting.

I am so glad you mentioned one of my favorite bands when I was a teenager here in Ohio. They were huge here and played live around me many times. They were one of my first concerts I ever seen. They were so great live and I won back stage passes at Akron Civic theater and got to meet the members. Phis came up and introduced himself to me. Such a wonderful kind person. Hey, he only had three fingers in his fret hand due to and accident as a child. Unbeaviabe what he could do. They still are playing too! Thanks so much Pete.

Incorrect, he lost his middle finger on his right hand, his strumming/picking hand, not his fret hand.

Familiar with Phil Keaggy only because my roommate freshman year of college (30 years ago) was into Christian music and listened to him all the time -- it has always amazed how much the music industry separates Christian music from 'mainstream', and how niche it is it. I'm not religious (at all), but have no problem listening to religious music and there seems to be so much talent within Christian music scene which rarely finds itself outside.
@wolf1977
@wolf1977 7 ай бұрын
In all honesty I'm not crazy about overly religious song lyrics (I also tend to avoid the more religious stuff by Neal Morse) but Keaggy does offer a lot of variety in his solo releases. They can't just be pigeon-holed into the "religious rock" category - same as with Neal

I've been a fan of Phil Keaggy since the Glass Harp days. HIs solo work can't quite accurately be called "mostly acoustic" because his prodigious output has spanned so many genres. Pete, I think you'd like "Crimson and Blue" because it is probably the hardest rocking of his releases. There are some great extended guitar jams on that one. "Sunday's Child" is a throwback to late 1960s rock/pop played on vintage instruments and through Vox amps.

Pete, thank you for ranking the glass Harp studio albums. I saw Glass Harp a number of years ago at The Sellersville Theatre in Sellersville, Pa. The show was actually billed as The Phil Keaggy Band, but actually was Glass Harp. They were amazing. They did a lot of Phil Keagy's solo stuff as well is Glass Harp material. Phil Keaggy has a lot of solo material that does have a lot of electric guitar work them. Check out "Love Broke Thru" because Leland Sklar plays bass on it, and Jim Gordon plays drums on it s well. That alsbum was released back in 1976/. My favorite Keaggy solo album by far.

Wow, I never thought of it like that. Pete hit the nail on the head with the similarity to Terry Kath. Phil's technicality, feel and such are pretty close. I just saw them in Cleveland at the Music Box in 2019 they still have it. John Sferra and Dan Pecchio are VERY tight rhythm section. Dan Pecchio played with Michael Stanley for awhile.

Pete, love your shows. I would love to hear you rank the albums of Spirit. I think they are very much overlooked and underrated. You could limit it to their 60's and 70's output. They put out some stuff in the 80s and 90s but nobody cared at that point. Ed Cassidy was an amazing drummer with jazz chops rarely seen in a rock band.

The first 4 are absolute stone cold classics with Sardonicus their true high water mark (for me). I have something like 25 total Spirit albums (incl best of's & live) & the 60's & 70's absolutely represents their best. I do like some later post-70's stuff like The Last Euro Tour & Son Of America. Two albums I really like a lot but are probably pretty much unknown except to hard core fans are Future Games (heavy Star Trek influences) & (The Complete) Potatoland... Time Circle, It Shall Be: The Ode & Epic Recordings 1968-1972, Chronicles 1967-1992, The Best Of Spirit & Fresh From The Time Coast (The Best Of 1968-1977) are excellent collections to get one's feet wet. Truly one of THE great rock bands ever. "I Got A LIne On You" is pretty much a perfect pop/rock song & I always thought that their song "Nature's Way" was the perfect bookend for Ten Years After's "I'd Love To Change The World"

Keaggy has one of the best guitar techniques in rock history. He was also one of the first rockers to incorporate sweep picking. Watching Keaggy play always reminds me of Australian classical guitarist John Williams who reputedly has the most perfect guitar technique ever seen.

Love Phil and have the Glass Harp albums. Phil song TIME is on KZfaq, some great guitar on that. He put a whole bunch of demos on his Bandcamp. Great guitar especially with his missing middle finger on the one hand. In a way it's similar to Kerry Livgren and Kansas with Kerry going in a different direction then leaving to go solo.

The debut is my favorite album from them. The two albums that followed are good but to me lack the energy and consistency of the debut. Of those two "It Makes Me Glad" is better. The "Live at Carnegie Hall" album was not released until decades later because the band broke up. Many good Keaggy solo albums. "Crimson and Blue" and its alternate release "Blue" are very good. "220", "Wind and the Wheat", "Master and the Musician" among many great albums.

The band has 3 other live albums. STARK RAVING JAMS, LIVE AT THE BEACHLAND BALLROOM and STRINGS ATTACHED with the Youngstown Symphony. This is a clip from that show, from unreleased multi-camera production. It's doubtful the show will get released in a professional manor, but single camera views exist. It is interesting to note that the band finished their first album the day Jimi Hendrix passed, and also that they had NO IDEA strings were going to be added to their songs! Imagine their surprise when they got the test pressings and heard that! In 2000, a Youngstown rock station that played their music consistently wanted to do a special concert, and Daniel Pecchio suggested doing a show with the Symphony. It was an amazing night, and the 2 CD release is awesome! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b7yYnNWQusXRp30.html

Not hardly, those were a remnant of left over hippies ( the Earth Shoes and granola crowd.) Those were adoring fans that new every word of all of their albums. They always somewhat steerd away from the zealots. I believe Phil said that the vest was made for him by one of his friends at that came to that local PBS show .( Lucky him).. It was simulcast on WMMS. the one black guys that was on shown on camera was Billy Bass, the program director for WMMS back in the day.

I'm usually in agreement with your rankings (in general.) However this time, my jaw hit the floor when you ranked the first Glass Harp album in second place. I'm a Glass Harp fan back from the beginning (from Cleveland, natch.) I have about 25 Glass Harp CD's, two copies of the first album on vinyl, their DVD, and have downloaded several of their albums from Bandcamp (including John Sferra's album Northbound and the post-Phil "Glass Harp 1972-1973" compilation.) However, I don't own the second or third album; I just don't like them (except for "Sailing On A River" from It Makes Me Glad.) I think every music fan should own the first album. It is the most overlooked rock album in the History of Rock Music. I appreciate all the words of praise ;) for Glass Harp and the amazing Phil Keaggy, but I think you really missed the bullseye on this one. That first Glass Harp album is Essential.

My rankings: 1. S/T (1970) 2. Hourglass 3. Synergy 4. It Makes Me Glad The triple live Stark Raving Jams (covering 30+ years) is great & so is Strings Attached. Also there's Live! At Carnegie Hall from '97 & Live At The Beachland Ballroom 11.01.08...Solo Keaggy is great too (at least the secular stuff - not really into the more religious releases - same as for Neal Morse). My faves: Blue, Acoustic Cafe, The Cover Of Love, Find Me In These Fields, Inseparable, Invention (With Wes King & Scott Dente), Love Broke Thru, Numen, Music To Paint By - Electric Blue, Play Thru Me, Premium Jams, Town To Town, Underground, Two Of Us, 220...The teamup with Tony Levin & Jerry Marotta produced the very good 2019 album The Bucket List. And the live album with Randy Stonehill called Together Live! contains some good tracks
