Phil is one of the all time greatest guitarists. I've seen him perform 12X. The first time was at a highschool auditorium in Prince George's County Maryland in 1981. He wasn't playing his Les Paul nor his Strat. At the end of the show he acknowledged who had built the amazing guitar he was playing - it was none other than 25 yr old Paul Reed Smith who was in the audience. Phil had him stand and thanked him for loaning one of Paul's very first prototypes that night.

That is awesome. I have been a Phan of Phil Phorever! I love that PRS info. Phil is and was insanely good and tragically undersppreciated. Somehow I think it worked out as God desired, Phil dedicated himself to Christ and was a huge blessing to young street urchins like me and many more. It gave us a Christisn guitarist that was better than just about anybody. At the highest level you can’t say for sure who is the best. A lot depends on taste. I listened to all the greats bsck in those days and nobody ever impressed me more.

The Glass Harp's first album is very solid 70s jam rock. Children's Fantasy from that LP has looooong be a person favorite. Latin flavored, with a "hey I could listen to this sitting on the beach" vibe to it. And while I'm here, "Agora" from The Master and the Musician is superb. A playlist number. And for a taste of him fingerstyle find a live, LIVE version of Shades of Green. He uses a loop to build a rhythm from which he can solo. Shades will blow your mind.

Glass Harp and James Gang were from the same NE Ohio region, and played on the same concert circuits at that time. Both are very much a product of the times, that heavy funky blues rock power trio style. Phil is a legend, not only in that part of America, but among "serious" guitarists everywhere. The awesome part is that he only got better at playing guitar as he aged. His solo acoustic performances are unbelievable, and he can still put on a show playing electric.

I live in North East Ohio, and I am quite familiar with Glass Harp and the guitarist Phil Keaggy. Between the mid 1990s and early 2000s I drum teched for the drummer John Safera when they have played in my area. Make no bones about it, in spite of the "christian" tag, this band was a power trio of very athletic and formidable musicians that were part jam band, part prog and part hard rock as well as well as some folk thrown in. Phil Keaggy has been a solo artist since 1973 and has over 60 albums. All of his albums are different and completely runs the gambit of genres. He has always been a somewhat of a restless musician never content to stay in one place stylistically. Other great Glass Harp songs are Can You See Me , children's Fantasy, and Song of Hope. I still love listening their music. Their music is always uplifting and very hopeful. Big influences for Glass Harp are The Beatles,Cream and King Crimson.

This recording almost didn't get released! It was going to be their 3rd Decca album, but they decided to into ELECTRIC LADY STUDIOS and do a 3rd studio album instead. This was sitting around for many years. The final extended song CAN YOU SEE ME sat in my studio on a reel to reel from the bass players father-in-law! When it came time to release this by the band, they couldn't locate this master reel from the original producer. They had to take the reel I had, and we cleaned it up here in my hometown! Fortunately, the first four songs (including this one) were on a safety reel from the producer, Lewis Merenstein. If you get a chance, go down the rabbit hole at KZfaq and you will be amazed! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNF7YLBksdPKoKc.html Video of this song!!

It was reported in a magazine that Hendrix was asked what it felt like to be the greatest guitar player. He supposedly said "I don't know, ask Phil Keaggy". PS -Then there are the interviews with members of Chicago saying that he thought Terry Kath was great. Besides the Dick Cavett Show interview, there was also the footage of a press conference on a DVD set where he downplays comparisons in general, saying that you can't say who is better - Segovia or B.B.King, because they're both kings.

It definitely is urban legend. I have seen this comment attached to so many guitar fan bases ( Rory Gallagher being the latest) I have seen this supposed interview with Hendrix, who was visibly uncomfortable with this compliment. He retorted "how about I am the best guitarist sitting in this chair" . Phil has stated that Glass Harp were recording their first album at Electric Lady 3 weeks before Jimi died and had never met him. Glass Harp did play on one of the last shows at the Fillmore West before Bill Graham closed those amazing venues. Ironically they did play some shows opening for Alice Cooper at Winterland.
