Folks-please be advised, that I rarely watch the news, and had planned on doing this ranking for over 2 weeks, so there is no 'tie in' to whatever is going on with Neil Young in the news this week. Let's keep this all about the music and the albums, and leave all the other b.s. for somewhere else...not here.

He's got an interesting discography. I know it all, but in every decade from the 60s til now he's got albums which are brilliant and albums I do not care for... I obviously love his early classics and renowned stuff like Rust never sleeps, Freedom or Ragged Glory, but I particularly love his so called "ditch trilogy", Time fades away, On the beach and Tonight's the night. Zuma is also great. So many stuff! Love this guy.

Thank you so much! Great to listen to someone else's take on a truly massive library of fantastic music. I should not be surprised at all that my list would look very different from Pete's. But whatever - what's important is that his music is celebrated. On The Beach is on the shortlist of my favourite albums ever. As is Greendale. Honestly - probably both top 10 albums ever for me. The fact that those albums are separated by almost 30 years is testament to a remarkable career.

I consider myself a fan but I didn't get into his larger body of work until I was into my late 20s. The exception being "Rust Never Sleeps" and "Live Rust". For whatever reason I really liked those albums since their release (I was a teenager). One of my older brothers brought those discs back from college and I've been listening to them ever since. (Good thing Pete can't see my Phillies t-shirt that I'm wearing 😁)

Today my ten would be…. 1 Zuma - Danger Bird blew me away when I first heard it. 2 On the beach- “I need a crowd of people……” 3 American Stars and Bars 4 Live at the Fillmore East 1970 - Sparkling., come on baby let’s go downtown 5 Everybody knows this is nowhere- Cinnamon Girl is timeless rock. 6 Tonight’s the Night - melancholic and moving with the wonderful Nils Lofgren 7 After the Gold Rush - earthy Southern man 8 Greendale - Double E - unique almost lolling guitars and drums 9 Broken Arrow - Again thundering guitars of Loose Change. 10 - Rust Never Sleeps - Welfare mothers make better lovers Tomorrow of course these will change. Quite like his Americana album and about 60% of Barn!

Nice list, Pete. Always enjoy watching and listening to your casts! I've been a lifelong fan of Neil for many years and I'll submit my top 10 list: 10. Silver and Gold- A cool latter day release; love the folky and sparse feel this one has. 9. Freedom- Simply an awesome comeback from his scattered decade of the eighties. Perfect way towards reinvention! 8. Broken Arrow- Agree with you that this was a good/solid album with the Horse. Love the opening first half of jams! 7. On the Beach- Love the haunting, yet melodic and emotional starkness this "ditch" era album evokes. Classic Neil. 6. Harvest- As much as I don't listen to this all that much anymore, there's no denying the classic status this possesses. 5. Zuma- Again, with Crazy Horse and the first with Pancho on guitar, some awesome rockers and beautiful acoustic cuts. 4. Tonight's the Night- Haunting, drunken, bleary and astonishing, this record is simply stunning. Not for the faint hearted. 3. Everybody Knows This is Nowhere- The first with Crazy Horse and Danny Whitten. 'Nuff Said! 2. Rust Never Sleeps- Perfect Blend of Acoustic music with a ripping electric bend. Again with the Horse, Prime Record! 1. After the Gold Rush- This is the record that turned me on to the power and wonder of Mr. Young. All time best release!

Quite a pleasant surprise to find a Neil Young ranking to enjoy. And foolish me…I never thought about any politics, I thought it might be related to the best of ‘’72 daily shows this month and that Harvest was released that year. My off and on fondness for Neil probably changes as often as he switches musical styles but there are certain albums cherished and enjoyed. Ten of them, with no ranking, are listed. Freedom Ragged Glory Harvest Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere Tonight’s The Night After the Gold Rush On The Beach Prairie Wind Zumba Comes A Timr Many, many thanks, Pete, for this ranking show.

Good list, my friend. I'm interested to know what you think of "Silver & Gold" one of my all time favorites. (He's got so many, "Rust Never Sleeps", Comes a Time"?) You can tell I'm one of those country/folk/acoustic Neil fans. Thanks for your time and effort. Also, I discovered your work through the latest Tull album.

Been a long time Neil Young fan & I like the majority of his music & there are definitely some different styles of music he does in his own way. But here's how I would rank them. I'm going 1st to last though. The 1st two a absolutely love & never get tired of. 1. Harvest 2. After the gold rush 3. Everybody knows this is nowhere 4. Rust never sleeps ( Pete did you forget about this album, couldn't believe it didn't make your top 10) 5. On the beach 6. Zuma 7. Neil Young 8. Hitchhiker 9. Harvest moon 10. Tonight's the night

One of my favourites. 1) After The Gold Rush 2) Rust Never Sleeps..... Though recorded live they were all new songs, so I'm including it. 3) Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere 4) Ragged Glory 5) Tonight's The Night 6) On The Beach 7) Zuma 8) Havest 9) Harvest Moon 10) Time Fades Away.... Again recorded live but all unreleased prior to this.

Terrific job, Pete. I think the baroque chamber pop that Neil Young did with 'Broken Arrow' in the 1960s is amongst his finest work as an artist. Please do Joni Mitchell next. Keep up the great work.

Try out Sleeps With Angels and I think you'd like Psychedelic Pill Pete ( some very long jam tunes)- right up your alley. Also a few newer releases of some 70's albums that were planned for release but held back at the time: Hitchiker, Homegrown. Freedom, Harvest Moon, Silver and Gold, On The Beach are real good too, if you haven't heard them.

He did the tour with Crazy Horse backing him. and for an encore they did some classics;, Hurricane. and Rocking in the Free World. were a few gems. I liked his follow up album after Greenwood, Prairie Wind 2006 has some beautiful numbers on it. , After the Goldrush is my number 1 favorite. followed by Harvest

Recently went on a major rediscovery of his catalog and purchased what ever i didn't already own on CD I have just about everything at this point . I love his folky stuff as much as with Crazy Horse and his more obscure stuff like The Blue notes come on Neil with a horn section many hated it I loved it , the Deadman soundtrack even digging Trans but I have to say his newest Barn is one of his best in decades my absolute favorite is Ragged Glory so much so I've gone threw at least 3 copy's over the years .
