For me: HB - goated for me, was a revelation when I tried it. lets the WB's cook and offers solidity in center of pitch. retrain excellent passing CBs to DM to get more touches like a Josko Gvardiol. I'll shift HB asymmetrically to the side I have a WB(A) F9 - agree meh, I like how it pairs with a SS or CM (A). If I wanted to use a DLF but the player is agile/shorter. Nkunku did well for me here DW - useable, very demanding stamina wise I find. I had success with them as more aggressive WBs in a mock 5-3-2 for wingers/WBs I retrained. - alphonso davies or Destiny Udogie DLP - great IMO, offers a lot of balance to my teams CM - goated for versatility in PI Carrilero - just meh for how I tend to structure my teams, prefer controlling movement up and down pitch. I'll adjust width with stay wide/inside or inverted roles.

The Wide target man is pretty impressive, @TheManagersSeat created a tactic combining it with the volante. It was great.

I always struggle using the AF, it seems he never really gets involved in play, DLF and complete forward on attack usually give me the best results up top

Meanwhile me playing asymetric 3142 with WCB on support, BWM and DW on support - imho better than WB on attack if you have at least one WB a bit more oriented into offense. Easy to combine with mezzala on attack and WCB. I use it in my Lazio save, picked up Emanuele Valeri from Cremonese for cheap, paired him with Samardzic/Wanner and Van de Ven as WCB on support. Set two AF bit more to right side (to have central striker and right striker with more dribbling), mezzala often moves into channels, almost like a third striker, so i end up as 343 in attack. DW gives me width on left side, he often takes ball to oppsition box, from time to time he'll send decent through ball to mezzala, in general they tend to combine play with eachother. WCB secures DW in defense, but he can also make a decent pass to DW when he sees space for DW's run, he also patricipates in short play on wing. On other side i have WB on support, with AF on right, wb tends to send him longer passes from deeper positions, to let AF run into open space. BWM secures all, from behind, box to box fills space in center. Despite how it might look, i don't see much goals conceded from my left wing being to open to counter attacks

Complete Forward is the best but you also need the best player for it, i only had 1 player that could do it for sure, a newgen, scored 35-40+ goals a season, it's like 3 or 4 roles in one, it takes an insanely good player for it, i think Halaand can do it fine probably but never tried with him.

No nonsense CB is the new meta. Genuine line breaking passes from th centre backs and more assists from them too!

Also, If my FB gets injured and I only have a CB on the bench, I’ll bring the CB on and set him to No-Nonsense FB. Works great. That wing is shut down for the rest of the match

NFB is brilliant for holding shape to create a 3 back in attack

NFB can actually be useful in case you have injuries and put someone like a CB in that position. So he will just play simple and defend

I have only used one wide targetman, it was a low league save and the player was the star player on the squad I inhareted so I didnt have much choice but to use him. He did really well, when pared with my striker who would score a goal a game... if you played him as pressing forward on support. If you put him on attack he wouldnt score any goals.

hey jake, could you make a video about best defensive/counter attacking tactics? it could help players who manage a small club/lower league club when againts big club? at least if it has better performance with less conceding goal from big club. thank you

For me the ATTACKING MIDFIELDER is better than the ADVANCED PLAYMAKER 🔥

I'm a bit suprised about a couple of roles, now i'm using them by myself on a permanent basis ;-) Anchor: After I switched the DM from DM (defend) to anchor then immediately both my defence and attack became significantly improved. It's a very solid role. In defence he's focusing on filling the holes and making the defence compact. In possession it gives the freedom to the attacking players to go forward because of he's deep position. It is also a great help when you are in the final third, because of it's deep position, so it's often playable and a great help for retaining possession. So it is the biggest key role in my system and hence I think it should be among the GOAT roles ;-) Pressing forward (attack): in possession it's a very good allround role because it regularly acts as a spearhead and also regularly comes deep and to the flanks to support build up. So actually it acts largely like an aggressive complete forward. So in your world the role should be at least a great role ;-)

See this is interesting Jake and like you said it's all down to opinion but I've found that using an advanced forward with a deep lying forward has bought me alot of success in the lower leagues. Along with a ball winning midfielder 😂

Anchor n HB are the 2 roles in DM defensive positions where average ratings seem respectable

For me these roles are meta: SK, Wing backs, BPD, DM, Vol, IW, AM, SS, AF

BPD is borderline goat for my tactics. Also always use bwm and btb midfielders for balancing the team. Bwm always have low avg rating, but thats not to say its not important, just as it is in real life. Haaland will avg rate higher than Rodri, but Rodri is just as if not more important for the team

False9 is soo good just depends what u got around it and what formation u use , but what I seen in my saves , its vary vary good better then pressing forward . Pressing forward is kinda useless in fm23 , in fm21 or 22 it was probably the best stricker role but in fm23 its all about supporting strickers like DLF , CF , F9 ,TF they r much better , and also advance forward really is best forward role on this game altho I tend to play DLF or CF more often cause I like better what I can play around it

WT man works excellently paired with CM(a) or better yet SegVol(a), use look for underlap on that side and they will hold up play out wide leaving space for midfielders to come through from deep. AI absolutely cannot deal with this, it's borderline an exploit. Even better if you have a winger who will bang crosses to the far post constantly, it's two amazing weapons for the price of one. Poacher works great against 4atb setups, they will hang out and split/pin the defenders. I switched my 4321 DM/AM narrow system from AM to Poacher and my striker got 15 more goals the next season. They are mid against shit teams but when you start playing elite teams like ManCity that play high line your poacher will be in position for a through-ball much more often on account of not dropping into build-up play as much. Enganche is a great role for lower leagues where some of the best players you can get are aging attacking midfielders who have incredible mental/technical stats but their legs are gone. They basically do the post-Barca-era-Messi role.

My Libero works wonders though. Personally I love building out the back and I love to have the middle cb in a 5 at the back system to push up on his own like a more aggressive BPD and DLP role combined. I also like having my AF paired with the TREQ up top. I've yielded great results so far.

Target forward is the GOAT

I try to create a 4-2-3-1 for Ajax. Obviously the offense has loads of flair. I´m not sure about the role i use as OM. Does a shadow striker get use out of his flair enough even when it´s not highlighted as key attribute?

Wishes we could see where each roles and duty would make our players go, I try to avoid overlapping and the game does not show where the players would end up in the field. It would be better to see which are the best player roles combinations and which to avoid.

Treq might be my favourite role. Not physically demanding but can be your key man at CAM. Imagine an AP with more freedom to shoot and no defensive responsibility, who just floats around looking for space. Especially suits an Arda Guler type with good mentals and technicals but poor physicals.

I feel your very wrong about the poacher though.

My Inside Forward on Attack creates more and scores less than my Inverted Winger on Attack. Is this normal?
