Such a beautiful analysis of Darren Wooden. And thank you putting him as the best safety in cowboy history as he deserves. He was the anchor of a defense that dominated for five years. You don't see that type of longevity in domination anymore.

LC, you've outdone yourself. This a great logical review of the great safeties in Cowboys history. And you did it all in under (12:00) minutes. Personally, I believe Cliff Harris was so intense that in-between games they must have strapped him down like Frankenstein to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents of the DFW metroplex. I wonder if his personality would have changed with a full head of hair. Great job my LC.

@@thelogicalcowboy I know I'm late to this vid, but I'm just gonna keep posting like it was put up 10 minutes ago, lol. You aren't kidding about Cliff, LC. As much as any athlete I've followed, he seemed to have an on-off switch. Usually a great guy off the field, but, man, he became a beast bordering on being a jerk on the field. I mean, from giving Gerrela (no clue how to spell the Steelers kicker's name) a slap on the helmet for a missed kick to rolling Ahmad Rashad off him with complete disdain when he was clearly concussed, this guy was a borderline maniac. Really glad he was our maniac. If he played for another team, I'd view him like I did Tatum -- supremely talented, but somebody you just want to hate. All that said, he really is a great guy away from the field. Had the pleasure of chatting with him a couple times, and he's just a really cool and patient guy. But, oooh, don't go near that switch.

Charlie tore up his knee in the Seahawks stadium right after they had installed new artificial turf. 1979, Charlie joined Brad Sham in the booth. As a Cowboys fan since 1977, I have been lucky to have seen a lot of great players for the Cowboys in that time. Darren Woodson was a great, and very versatile safety. I will always remember him knocking out a scrambling Rodney Peete (then of the Eagles) with a big hit to keep Peete short of a first down. I certainly would not want to be hit by him or Cliff Harris in their primes lol. Awesome video!

I have so many fond memories of watching Cliff Harris and Charlie Waters. It was criminal that it took so long for Harris to make the Hall of Fame. Waters always had the knack of making the big play at the right time in the biggest games, whether he was blocking a punt, intercepting a pass, causing a fumble or recovering one, I always called him the Ram killer because he was usually the difference between the Cowboys beating the Rams, especially in the playoffs, than anyone. Woodson was truly special, and when I saw the Cowboys drafted Overshown in this year’s draft, my first thought was for him to play Strong Safety and then linebacker in the nickel package. Woodson hit as hard as anyone, and was another reason Dallas won so much during the 90’s. Great list. I even wore # 26 in high school because of Downs until Bill Bates came into the league. I then had to change it to #40, who may have deserved honorable mention on this list. But, I am sure if you do a list on Special Teams, my guess is that he’ll be on that along with “The Shark” Kenny Gant.

Michael Downs came to my high school and gave a Q&A for our journalism team (which I was not on but our PE coach let us attend). I remember he said the fine for losing your playbook was $500 which brought gasps from all us kids. The first time I heard of Charlie Waters was when he got injured during a pre season game with Seattle (I didn't start watching football until 1980). I remember his 41st and last interception. "41 for number 41" was how it was called. I remember Cliff Harris but as a youngster didn't know how good he was. Mel Renfro was before my time but I remember the controversy of him being left out of the Ring of Honor and was happy when he was finally inducted.

I liked the Michael Downs choice in yor excellent video. Downs was overlooked because he was not the big hitter (he was kind of skinny) that stuffs runs on highlight films. But he was smart and worked very well in Landry's timed blitz schemes. Also, Downs did not have great linebackers in front of him like some of the other players. That was a major disadvantage. Downs was an excellent player in a "trending down" Dallas era. I guess you could decribe him as "less bulk is more".

I wholeheartedly agree with the "trending down" comment. The luster was fading in the mid 80's. The Cowboys 20 years of consecutive winning seasons ended in 1985. There were no NFC title game appearances after 1982 after making it there 10 times between 1970 and 1982. The 1983 team got off to a 12-2 start. After the "Danny No game" against the Redskins in 83 things steadily went south. After the 1983 season I never went into a season thinking Dallas was a top choice to make the SB in the NFC. Ironically Downs and (Everson Walls) were in their prime at this time. But, since the team was trending down their greatness has been forgotten. I was a big Dallas fan back then and I needed your video to remind me how good Michael Downs was back in the day 😅

It's a travesty Woody is not in the HOF and a travesty that the great Charlie Waters isn't at least in the ring of honor and probably the HOF, hell just the fact that he was big time in the playoffs tells me everything. He' probably the greatest DB not in HOF but I'm unashamedly biased. Renfro is still the Cowboy all time leader in interceptions and Waters is number 3 after retiring over 40 years ago. You know whats funny I went through that same thought process in my head for a long time. Normally the player who had the longer career gets the nod. Especially if they were dominant in that time. And then? Cliff is 3?? WTH???? Who did I miss??? Started watching in '71, so I had no idea the immortal mel Renfro started as a safety. I only knew him as a TRUE shutdown corner (ask Paul Warfield). In fact, a lot of Charlie's problems when he played corner came from the opposing team refusing to throw to 20's side of the field even very late in his career. Anyway, long story short (if it's not already too late for that), I'd put mel at 2, as well. Of course, he was so great that I'd put him in the top 5 defensive linemen if he even lined up for 1 play with his hand in the dirt, lol. Great stuff, as always!

Although I will say I had a debate with a very knowledgeable Cowboy fan who always keeps me on my toes lol and if I could do it over again I'd probably have Harris in the 2nd spot. You can go look at that debate. Its some where in this comment section under "No Way" post. But Renfro was so underated as a safety. Of course, all of this is subjective which is part of the fun, but..... I love Michael Downs, but he was a Free Safety and not a strong safety in Landry's system; those are two different things. Free safety could be manned by a rookie, Cliff did it in '70 and Downs did it in '81. Strong safety was a much more complex position in Landry's scheme, and I don't think anyone did it better than Cornell Green. He only did it for 5 years after switching from CB at the age of 30, but he still made the Pro Bowl twice doing it. I've probably said this before, but he is the reason Charlie Waters was playing CB and not safety , Waters' more natural position. Green kept Charlie on the bench so to speak- and Charlie Waters was great at Strong safety. Also, look at the team defense sats for Dallas through the Landry year. Dallas' defense was awful for the years 1980-1988. They had a line and an MLB and not much else. My point being , that Dallas' secondary was horrible when Downs was there- that's why he made big plays on blitzes, cause Dallas' secondary, including Downs, was slow. After Dallas lost Kyle, the flood gates opened. Prior to that, from 1970-1978/9 , Dallas secondary was decent to great, and it was at its best when Green was playing SS.

The story goes that Gil Brant discovered Cliff Harris while scouting a running back from Hawaii. A skinny kid kept tackling him who ended up being Cliff. There were a few times Cliff is seen tackling Walter Peyton. It was dumb for any player tackling Walter he being one of the few players singled out as being beyond tough by Randy White. Charlie Waters was the Sean Lee of the safeties without all the injuries. Cliff gave up his head and Charlie used his. Didn't Woody and Roy Williams play together?

Cliff Harris and Charlie Waters were a dynamic duo when I was a teenager in the late 70s. They were awesome and were an important part of the DALLAS COWBOYS dynasty. Waters played the position with intelligence and finesse and Harris played like a cold-blooded assassin! That's perfect for a defensive backfield. Cliff Harris was the type of player that you will never see in the NFL again! That's why I've lost interest in the game.

💯+ Darren Woodson not being in the Hall of Fame is total 🐄💩. Woodson was better than John Lynch and LeRoy Butler who are in. It has become like Drew Pearson not being inducted in a timely manner despite being the clutch receiver of the game during the 1970s where the passing game was much harder.

You've got the right 5, but I'm sorry, Mel, Cliff, and Charlie (in whatever order you choose) are ahead of Darren. Maybe not by much, but Woodson played in an era with far more nickel and dime coverage than the '70s Cowboys did. Basically, Charlie ran the show on defense (after Jordan retired), and that defense was one of the two or three best in NFL history. Charlie is so underrated, it makes me sick.

Yeah I adressd that in the comment section already. It was a mistake on my part. I have no idea why I said it. lol As for Green, in my humble opinion he does not belong on this list. I do have him on the top 5 list as a CB. If you want to check it out here's the video... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hr6bZrV92sC1mH0.html

Went to the Broncos years later scouted and developed All Pro S Dennis Smith and Steve Atwater.
