always great having a Supertramp episode. Crime at #1 for sure! 🌠 Personally I really love Crisis, it's my #2. The Meaning is probably the most underrated track in their catalog. I always found Rick's songs on EITQM a bit boring, while Roger is delivering the gems.

Scott. Thanks for the ranking. One of my favorite groups while in high school going into college. Had the good fortune to see them twice. First saw them at Alpine Valley, sixth row. Saw them later at the arena in downtown Milwaukee. The concert at Alpine was probably the best, purest concert I have ever experienced. Their sound was INCREDIBLE.

One of two true childhood loves, Supertramp was what I listened to the most as I officially turned into a teenager. Dreamer remains one of my all-time favourite singles, and Crime of the Century remains ultra special. While people go on about how well Dark Side of the Moon is recorded, and I totally agree, I suggest that Crime of the Century is an even better recording. This is what you take in to a hi-fi store when shopping for equipment, especially speakers. As for calling Supertramp a progressive-pop band, this is the first time I've heard anyone label Supertramp what they truly are; A very classy and sophisticated pop band that will cross into progressive territory when it suits the song. Although my first kiss belongs to The Hollies, the true love affair that is Supertramp ended for me when Roger left the band. With Final Last Words I took the opportunity to break it off and move on. However, and despite that, no one is allowed to say a bad thing about Supertramp, or they'll have to deal with my wrath, Peter Hammill style, cape, church organ, demonic voice 'n' all!

This is the first ranking list that I absolutely agree with, there is always at least one album I thought should be higher but not with this one... I discovered Supertramp when 'Crime of the Century' dropped. I was talking to the bassist of one of the hottest local bands around, Eulogy, whose guitarist Rusty Anderson went on to play for Paul McCartney, BTW. I was also playing bass in a band, which never achieved the success of either Eulogy, who went on to open for bands like Rick Derringer and another local band who was really hot, called Van Halen (The stories I got). We had been talking about Rickenbacher basses, which we were both ardent fans of and played, when Dirk, this other bassist, suddenly jumped up excitedly yelling I had to hear this new album he had just bought. He went to his van and came back with a cassette, telling me to listen to it and to make a copy if I liked it. That's how I got 'Crime of the Century' which I agree is not only their best album but also one of the best Pop Prog albums ever made.

For me, I rank the Holy Trinity of _Crime of the Century, Crisis? What Crisis?_ and _Even in the Quietest Moments_ as the top three albums of The Tramp's discography. And they all came out back to back to back. After this they went a more commercial route, with _Breakfast in America._ Not that I begrudge them the worldwide success they achieved with this album but for me it was too poppy.

Great video! Supertramp is one of my very favorite bands, and created my favorite album of all-time, the absolutely perfect Crime of the Century! So yes, that HAS to be at #1. I actually like all of their albums, with all but the bottom one being quite good, the top 5 are great and the top 3 are all-time classics. Here is my ranking (some a bit different from yours): 11. Free as a Bird (you are right, the nadir of their career, but still a few decent songs 10. Famous Last Words (very disappointing follow-up to Breakfast, some quite good songs, some very bad songs, overly poppy, and bad production) 9. Indelibly Stamped (a bit all over the place, trying to find their sound, but actually much better than its reputation) 8. Slow Motion (Breezy laid-back jazzy grooves, fun extended jams. If you just go with the flow, it's quite good actually) 7. Supertramp (a strong debut, probably their most 'progressive' sounding, but hadn't yet quite found their own sound - seems to be inspired by Trespass) 6. Some Things Never Change (I actually really like this one, great jazz-blues feel and melodies. very under-rated) 5. Brother Where You Bound (With Roger Gone, Rick steers the band back toward a more progressive and jazzy style with great results) 4. Breakfast in America (Big commercial breakthrough, filled with great pop-rock songs, but getting away from their more progressive leanings) 3. Even in the Quietest Moments (Fantastic album, a bit warmer and gentler, filled with great melodies and proggy flourishes, a classic) 2. Cris? What Crisis? (Superb follow-up to Crime, more great blending of prog influences and pop sensibilities, magnificent from start to finish) 1. Crime of the Century (A True Masterpiece. One of the greatest albums ever recorded, sheer perfection throughout: songwriting, musicianship, performance, engineering, production, sound quality) Your comments regarding Crime are right on, but I think you seriously undervalued Crisis, as it is also a sensational album. I also like Some Things Never Change much more than you did. You can find more details and my comments on each album (and favorite songs) on my BB Chronicles blog (bbchron.blogspot). Supertramp! Crime to Breakfast is untouchable. Any one of those could be my favourite at any given time. Mind you when Breakfast came out I felt it was a bit of a sell out (which it kinda was) it took a few seconds longer to truly enjoy. The guitar solo at the end of Goodbye Stranger is one of my personal favourite solos of all time. Child of Vision! I was disappointed with …Famous Last Words… but it did have Know Who You Are and Don’t Leave Me Now, good Roger songs. Hmmm…Brother, Where You Bound. The title track oddly enough is the longest and proggiest track they ever released. I absolutely love that track and the rest of the album wasn’t too shabby either. Eye of the Storm. Ooooo…. The debut and Indelibly Stamped are pleasant enough, I consider those albums to be more of a history lesson for Supertramp fans. This is where we came from kinda thing. I am totally unfamiliar with any of the disasterpieces that Supertramp made after Brother. As far as I’m concerned that ship sailed when Roger left the band. I’ve seen Supertramp twice (Breakfast and Last Words) I have always loved the live album Paris as a reminder of that fantastic day at Jarry Park in the blistering heat. Jean Luc Ponty opened! Good times indeed!

Interestingly there is a documentary on KZfaq about that very show I was at. I remember watching those French hippies making that Supertramp logo out of beer cans. 1) Breakfast in America 2) Crime of the Century Both 1 and 2 are so close but have to give the edge to Breakfast. 3) Crisis?! What Crisis? 4) Even in the Quietest Moments 5) ...Famous Last Words... 3, 4, and 5 are all fantastic, but there's a couple songs on each that I don't resonate with. The rest, I've listened to, but I don't love enough to own them. 6) Debut 7) Free as a Bird 8) Some Things Never Change 9) Brother Where You Bound 10) Indelibly Stamped 11) Slow Motion

I have a top 4 list: 1. Crisis! What Crisis? 2. Crime of the Century 3. Even in the Quietest Moments... 4. Breakfast in America They are in a very close race to me. And I lov'em all. Like the debute album, kind of indifferent to the sophomore, "Famous Last Words" was a huge disappointment when it came out and "Brother Where You Bound" was a bit of a positive surprise. After that, I lost interest. Then there is this fascinating story of them being asked not to do the second set during their gig at Karmøy, Norway back in 1970. The audience were grown-up couples out for some dancing and the early and still very much obscure Supertramp did not fit their needs. Little did they know. But I'm sure there were some famous last words spoken that night.

I heard a similar story about The Moody Blues - playing a dinner club in LA before Days Of Futures Past dropped and people were throwing things at them. A couple months later those same folks probably became fans…

For me, not only is Breakfast in America a great sounding album, but the cover art is fantastic fodder for discussion. I mean, c’mon! A waitress mimicking the Statue of Liberty while flying over a mock up of Manhattan Island comprised of white painted breakfast cereal boxes?

Supertramp!!!! Breakfast in America is one of the defining albums of the late seventies and the clear number one Supertramp album for me. I must be weird, but I never did get the love for Crime of the Century. Hmm... I was always more of a Roger fan than a Rick fan (although my favorite Supertramp song is Goodbye Stranger) so the later stuff is not really for me. I love Quietest Moments and Crisis and Famous Last Words. Anyway, Supertramp (like all bands) is defined by it's great albums, not by it weaker ones, so count me a big fan!

@@Jay_Tee2023 Yes I also agree with you ! 🎹 it's Rick Davies on his most vulnerable. That type of voice he uses there, in that particular song, he somehow never ever before or since used again. So strange! Because he sounds just wonderful, so soothing, so vulnerable, so tender, so....well....sweet almost.. The solo by John Helliwell fits perfectly; beautiful phrasing and tone color, the chords are poppy/jazzy, the melody lingers along, and the delicate song is in its position on the LP such a well "intro" and preparation, emotionally & musically, to the banger of the album "Child Of Vision". 👍🏻🎹👍🏻
