The best thing about Hunter x Hunter is that even if you ignore all the very prominent characters, the series is still a masterclass in character writing only with its side cast.

I'm so glad that you were able to affirm your love for Gon as he encompasses some of the most emotional beats in the series for me. I can never watch episode 131 plus a couple of others in the Chimera Ant arc without breaking down. It's amazing how Togashi manages to craft characters with such human cores that everyone can find something in all of them to latch onto and resonate with. Personally, my group of favourite characters would include Meruem, Kurapika, Gon, Shiapouf, Killua, Chrollo and Netero. Furthermore, I really do appreciate your videos as I love hearing people speak so passionately about the stories that resonate with them. I won't lie when I say that it's partly because of how much you gush over this series that finally got me around to checking out HxH. And I'm so glad I did as it's been one of the most wonderful surprises ever.

Pitou being at the bottom of the list just really shows how completely amazing the character writing is in Hunter X Hunter.

My favorite character is Netero because he perfectly incorporates the thematics of selfishness/selflessness. I think episode 111 is the best episode in the whole series.

As I was watching through the list, I kept expecting Gon to show up as the next character once I got to the top 5 or so, but honestly I really respect that he made it to number 1 on your list.

HxH has an amazing cast but I think where it really shines is it allows the so called "background characters" to shine almost as much the protagonist and sometimes more. Welfin is the perfect example of this. In another series this dude is just total fodder but in HxH he is absolutely pivotal. That's what I love about HxH. The world doesn't revolve around Gon and yet Gon is able to stand out in such a well written world because his character is just that interesting.

Love top lists, often make them myself. Glad to see Gon at number 1, really surprising! I feel people often just focus on one aspect of his character and overlook everything else. Sure he has his flaws and darkness within him, but most of the time he's selfless and cares about the well-being of others. Great list, I love your thought process on every character. For me Meruem is the best character in the series and possibly all of anime. I think Meruem is the perfect villain and the character growth he goes through in Chimera Ant is some of the best writing in fiction. Also he has one of the best designs in all of anime. The friend of mine that got me into HxH told me there was a villain that design wise was a mix between Frieza and Cell and that’s all it took to hook me.

wonderful video, for me Chrollo’s identity struggle and how it’s intervowen with the spider and his nen ability + general coolness makes him my top 1 HxH (2 all time) character, and seeing you gush over Gon really made me sit down and think more about him and realize how much I’ve enjoyed him during my current rewatch of the series

HxH is, to me, perhaps the central encapsulation of existential optimism, of all the beauty of life and human existence through the darkness we endure. The profoundity of our existence's duality and sheer potential is directly expressed, the essentially infinite dimensionality of the human condition as it pertains to life and identity - as also signified by Nen - crafting a genuine compassion and value for human life amidst the darkness of the setting. The concept of 'Detours' integrates beautifully into this thematic core, as it expresses the vitality of humanity's intrinsic yearning to truly live in an integrative manner, to rush toward every horizon, whilst maintaining the 'core' of that which one is, as both Gon and Killua learn to do. Human beings, by our very nature, yearn to soar amongst the stars, to ascertain all that defines the beauty of living, and to construct something to truly care for, be it for ourselves and/or within others (A notion Togashi additionally expressed within Yu Yu Hakusho, which I also adore). Such expressions are, to me, the core resonance of HxH. Beautiful work, as always. I must confess, the very existence of your channel makes me smile, for a veritable infinity of reasons. My favorite hunter x hunter character is kurapika From the beginning he is a fascinating mold for a character and I just love his interactions with literally every character His nen abilities are also my absolute favorite as I love how they tie perfectly into his past and his background His fight against uvogin is probably my favorite fight in the whole series And his masterful character writing in my favorite anime arc of all time is some of the best writing ever I love how he emits this tone of extreme darkness and how this further ties to his nen abilities in how certain parts of him feel chained and locked away and how his character represents this duality of external light and internal darkness Great video and I understand your reasoning for every character above kurapika in this list and a lot of your favorites are my favorites too actually

The fact that you have so much love for Pouf gives me life. I feel he's so underrated!

My two favorites currently are Kurapika and Ging. I love Ging mostly because of his attitude. He knows exactly who he is and he doesn't give a crap about what anyone else thinks. I also love the fact that he's extremely flawed. Plenty of people in the world of HxH hate his guts. He's one of the world's top Hunters yet he's kind of a douche who earns the dislike of others. In most shonen characters that serve similar roles to that of Ging are painted in very positive light but Ging is presented as just... human. And I find that quite amazing Kurapika is my #1 because I'm astounded by how well he is written and presented. He can be calm and collected but also hateful and at times impulsive. He is sweet and gentle but also cold and calculating. And it's not like all these "contradictions" are products of inconsistent writing. They make perfect sense for who he is. It's all within his character. He's a character we get to see through many different lenses (which I guess can be said for most characters in HxH 😅) and his self- destructive journey is extremely engaging. I also love how intelligent and calculating he is. Having Kurapika as the protagonist is so fun because he is constantly analysing everything and tries to find the best possible outcome. It's like he's always on a chessboard and he's a real good player. Anyway, these are my scattered thoughts on my favorite characters that I wanted to share

You have a wounderful and valid list. I couldn´t rank them all but my 2 clear favourites are Chrollo and Kurapika. Not only are they written greatly but their vibes is what I simply enjoy most when watching characters. Chrollo keeps you guessing who he at heart is. While there are just enough hints to keep you engaged in the mystery. I haven´t read the newest manga arc so I don´t know the information revealed yet. Also partly because the hiatuses would be hard to swallow for me since my two favourite characters are in the focus right now... Kurapikas case is easyer for me: I somewhat kin him (if we leave the revenge plot layer out) and can relate to him. So it simply makes me care for his story a lot. He is a soft, good-hearted person at nature, with strong morals and also the knowledgable/ studious and more strung up type. Then he has his loss and revenge that are eating away at him, going against his morals and soft nature, also scarring him mentally. I just want Leorio to punch him in old fashion anime style and talk him out of it.

On a side note, I recently heard that Togashi’s back pain is currently bad, so I feel like it'll be while for new chapters. But tbh, I'm fine with it; I'm more concern about his well-being. I hope he's getting help...

Don't let this top 15 distract you from the fact that bungee gum has both the properties of rubber and gum. My top 10: 1-Killua 2-Kurapika 3-Chrollo (after flashbacks) 4-Gon 5-Meruem 6-Hisoka 7-Leorio 8-Komugi (similar feelings as Leorio) 9-Netero 10-Pakunoda (after flashbacks, knowing she loved Chrollo. I'm crying just by the thought of it)

You should do some Yu Yu Hakusho videos. It's not as grand or enriching as Hunter X Hunter, but it has a lot of subtle character driven stories that hit home to anyone. I love Hunter X Hunter but I've always had a greater love for Yu Yu Hakusho, maybe it's because I grew up with it in the 2000s. Give it some thought.

I have to agree with Gon being the top character. Ever since picking up on some of his unique traits and attitudes it was hard to not see him as that guy. As the series goes on it’s just displayed more how greatly he was written.

I just rewatched the hunter x hunter(1999) then the chimera arc to the last episode, there are lots of amazing dialogue that I didn’t realized in the past.. This is my top 15 1. Killua- The way his mind works and his friendship with Gon made his character memorable. The change from assassin to hunter was just amazing… I agree with some of his decisions in a realistic way.. 2. Chrollo Lucilfer- This guy not only he was an amazing nen user but the complexity of his mind and the vulnerability of it was perfectly executed. The way he weighed his value but also the greediness was also fascinating. 3. Gon- Just like killua shat I love about him is his value his simpleminded personality was just entertaining. 4. Netero 5. Hisoka 6. Illumi 7. Bisuke 8. Kurapika 9. Goto 10. Leorio 11. Zeno 12. Shizuku 13. Morel 14. Ikalgo 15. Machi

Good list , the only thing missing for me is Morel. I love Morel's character , he was the backbone of the CA arc doing all the somewhat boring , but necessary preparations to ensure the mission's success. His words to Killua about how you can never know who will win in a nen fight are stuck with me to this day. It shows that he is a badass whos been through a lot , while maintaining a somewhat optimistic view even when faced with stronger opponents. He is one of the buffest guys we've seen in the show , yet he never uses brute strength when he fights, instead relying on clever tactics and experience, a masterful way to subvert expectations. His softer side shown with Colt and Gon being similar to that of his student Knuckle. For me he is the guy you can rely to follow the plan and get shit done while always making smart decisions on the spot. I'd be honored to go out and drink some beers with that guy!

Agree wholeheartedly with most placements and even the honorable mentions. Uvogin as a character weirdly just makes you want to rank him highly. Togashi gives him such a big presence with little screen time comparatively, especially in death he does a lot to give depth to the Troupe. Komugi as well, I expected a high ranking from you, cause you know she is so extremely vital to that Arc despite her strength level essentially being that of an insect to basically any other character in the series. I gotta believe a character like Mikey from Tokyo Revengers has to have some inspiration from a character like Komugi, where so much of the plot depends on them, despite them being such a weak physical force, but an intense mental force for driving the plot.

kurapika nr 1... his character is overlooked so often especially in early hunter. his inner thoughts about gon. the way he faced hisoka. his interactions with leorio and gon (how he comforts them especially gon and understanding his emotions). his interview with netero (in the simple answers he gave is soo much personality). his ability to put his hate aside for his friends in yorknew after the climax. his nen ability and everything around it perfectly fits into his narrative. there is soo much more about kurapika and his decisions often overlooked...

This is like the only manga where i cannot tell who is my favorite character. Nothing can compare with HxH when it comes to character uniqueness and depth.
