RANT: Motivation Follows Action, Action Doesn't follow Motivation. Audit your time. If you have spent more time on the internet AUGURING about form, diet or programming than you have actually training....Or you keep searching for that magic exercise or pill that will secretly give you all of the results you want. You can stop looking. It doesn't exist. Maybe instead, you should just get to the gym and actually try doing some work. I explain why in this video.

I have a friend who was a 2nd tier ballerina in the world. Made Novgorod ballet (not the Moscow or Bolshoi) as a 16 y/o Mexican girl in the 60s, when that was a pretty big deal. She runs her own studio and theater in Portugal. Her whole thing is that a working artist isn't "inspired," a working artist works, whether you feel like it or not. And THAT'S what separates the successful from the washout. You don't wait for the work, you go get it.

"Paralysis by analysis" really hit the mark for me. I've only been going to the gym for 4months and early on I got stuck on a 60kg squat. Very light weight, but I just read up on so many squat variants, whether tallness affects squat, whether my bodyweight was holding me back, etc. Couldn't break past that 60kg mark. Until finally I just said 'fuck all the internet information' and just made myself squat every. single. session. Now today, a month and a half later I finally hit a 100kg squat. Felt so happy to hit those triple digits. Once I stopped trying to figure out why I was getting stuck and simply squatted more, it worker wonders. Paralysis by analysis indeed. Great video. Grats on the 15k subs, you earned it for sure man.

Hey Brian, I'm following in your footsteps. Started on machines when I was 13 and full training at 15. Took me more than 10 years to try and fail at everything until I finally learned what worked for my lifting and nutrition. I'm about 10 years younger than you, but I'm planning to compete / open my own gym. Despite getting hit by a car in August and not being able to walk, I'm already stronger than I was before being hit. It was a painful journey to get back. No excuses. I hope to collaborate with you one day. Nice job with the 305 press. Only a small audience can appreciate how much dedication that takes.

Awesome video as always Brian - such a positive, motivating message. Hands down one of the best fitness channels on youtube. Personally, I have been struggling increasing my deadlift for months and felt i'd hit a wall, but in hindsight I was probably overthinking the lift rather than just putting 100% into pulling the weight off the floor. With your advice I managed to add 10kg to my 1rm this morning so thanks for the motivating speech!! Keep up the great content - I'm sure you'll hit 20k subs in no time at all.

I'm so guilty of this myself lol! I've reached a point where I focus mainly on just setting up my training so I can train hard, while still adhering to some basic principles of getting bigger and stronger. Also enjoying training way more. I can say that just running a program the way its written, even if its not "ideal" is way better than spinning your wheels with trying to come up with the perfect program. The best thing I ever did for getting stronger thou was getting a coach. I added probably around 40 pounds to my squat, 30 pounds to my bench and 60-70 pounds to my deads after working with Pete Rubish for 3 month, doing some of the probably most simplistic training I've ever done (besides 5x5). The only difference is he made sure I actually pushed myself crazy hard every time I trained. After that I spent some time in the army and the strength is yet to return, but yeah anyways, awesome video man!

That is awesome man! and yea, I am a big advocate of coaches. Not that i don't think people can do it on their own, but having an appointment that you have to make, having someone to be accountable to and having the benefit of not making the same mistakes they did ends up paying in dividends. Totally agree with what you said man!

Nice video! I think you're on to something as far as people just don't understand the TIME it takes to reach a lot of these goals. Especially after going on youtube or instagram, taking a year to squat 315 at 200 pounds might seem terrible, but that's actually great! that's another you and a half you're lifting and it took you 52 weeks. A lot of people start at like just the bar for squats so that's 270 pounds! Something almost all successful lifters seem to say is they didn't watch other people or try to steal their techniques, they just focused on doing a little better than themselves every week and I think that's the key.

It's very refreshing to hear your approach towards fitness and work ethic, especially with the rest of the industry/community seemingly focused on just trying to sell unnecessary products or making things more complex than they need to be. I like this rant. It's very true and applies to every aspect of life. I know you're right, because I went from a thinker to being more of a doer (is that a word?) and the results followed and more motivation as well. I get more motivation and take more action all the time. For example, I got 18 consecutive chin-ups a week or so ago and I am even more motivated to get more :) I just somehow still more or less fail at this at some other aspects of life. I want to become a writer, but I think too much and so the writing is rarely there and I have no results to show, i.e. no books ready and/or published. It's also hard to balance things. Eating 'right' and lifting right and going to work and all that. I have to be more action-oriented at other stuff too. So thanks for the advice. I tend to get bogged down online watching videos about lifting and/or nutrition and politics and current events and all that. There's a place for everything, but for me some stuff tends to crowd out other stuff. Oh well, the answer is there: take action.

Getting back to 5-6 basic movements with different variations, consistency, diet, hardwork and recovery is really all it takes. Even after 20+ years it is still the same blueprint. A thing about motivation I heard from another KZfaqr is that it is for losers. Sounds harsh but what he seemed to mean is that external motivation is good once or twice but it comes down to internal motivation to actually get shit done. Looking forwards to collabs with Allan, get the feeling that the humor between u 2 is gonna be epic! Especially if Sensai Allen shows up!!

A lot of this is very true! Especially about programs and plans! And again Brian , we are all thankfull for your great vid's. But not all is true. YOU motivate us!! ! 💪👍People get motivated by seeing others working hard. Music can motivate while workout. Films motivate us.. art.. so sometimes extra motivation comes from outside. You motivate so many People because you act as a perfect guide .. you have the knowledge and we the followers know that very well! You're da man! Looking forward to the mix of Brian , Alan & Bell..

Best thing I ever did was get a trainer to write my programs. Programs are written specifically for my work requirements. Takes all the thinking out of it and all I have to do is go in and do the workout, no excuses. P.S. Would be awesome to see a collaboration between you and Tony Sentmanat from Real World Tactical. Keep up the top work. Very little strongman anything in Australia so your channel has been very helpful.

The motivation to do anything is always modified by the effort required to achieve that goal. This is why those quick fix programs sell so well. Less effort to achieve your goals is preferred over more effort to achieve those goals. This ties into your other video about goal setting. Set your goal too high relative to what you can do currently and you stop because you don't see the goal attained. Do something more than you did the day before and you will progress. Great info as always.

Alan Thrall has two programs for sale as well. And by sale I mean he practically gives them away at like 10 bucks for beginner and about the same for intermediate. These programs rock and are supported by the programs that you did online. Thank you for all that you post and do! I will get a workout from you shortly to support for all of this awesome content.

Great! I was stuck in this cycle of 'what is best method/routine...' and was jumping foreward and backward not realising that I wasn't progressing. Now I stick with something for X amount of time and see what has worked and what has not. I wish this video was uploaded at least 2 years ago and that I found it 😅 Carry on brother 💪

A very successful ballerina once told me that a working artist doesn't wait for inspiration, they WORK. They do it every day, rain or shine, no matter how they feel. That's what makes a pro. Seems simple, but damn if it ain't true. You hear the same thing from writers. "If you want to be a writer, the important thing is to write." I'm a (lousy) guitar player. Same idea.

"Big Dumb Animal" , next tshirt offering maybe?.... Awesome video. More nuggets of wisdom that can be applied to any aspect of ones life!..... I don't compete at anything except at life, but whenever I don't have a training plan to follow I always fall back onto a simple formula; Push Pull Core Leg Drive 2 supplementals I try to do two big compound movers for each action. If I do this formula for an extended period of time , I'll vary rep schemes, heavy days etc. Kind of like how you described undulating your program on Thrall's channel. I like having something like this in the quiver, because it's always a quick fall back option.... I've noticed the last two weeks that you can tell who the resolutionists are in the gym right now. I have absolutely no issue with people trying to improve and better themselves , I wish everybody did this. But I see them, you can tell that they are rigidly following some type of program from men's health or similar. When they get to a step that says now use this piece of equipment for this exercise, they can't , because somebody else is using it! I've seen people just shut down and stop! Be adaptable! If it's a pushing exercise go find something else to push! I know this is counter to strictly following a program;) but action is always better than none.

Absolutely man! I just focus on the movement patterns similar to what you laid out. Then I just do the base movements with small variations. Then i repeat. Been doing that for most of my life now...Craziness.

That first step is the most important one as you say in the video. That first step makes the second step easier then so on. You gotta crawl before you can walk. Such great motivation! Though discipline I think is what keeps you going. Motivation fails us all but the drive and discipline to keep going is what matters most. Just my opinion though. Brian keep doing what you are doing. You are helping a lot of people!

I have heard it as behavior drives attitude. If you wait until you feel like going to the gym, change your diet you never will. But when I go anyway and see some positive results a few weeks later after being consistent it motivates me to keep pushing the next time I don't feel like it

We're all looking for instant results, instant gratification. I think we're all guilty of it at some point. I just started to lift and losing weight - took me 2 months to lose 32 pounds, I still have about 70 or so to go, but 32 in 2 months is tremendous progress. But I wanted that after 3 weeks. The more I got discipline the more I understood that this is a marathon not a sprint. Weight lifting is the same, I can't wait to have results show, but for that I need to be patient, keep at it and work my butt off everytime I train. I know consistency will show results after 4-8 weeks, and then after 4 months even more etc. Especially with the newbie gains.

Thanks Brian I enjoyed this video I just recently made this realization with my working out because I broke my wrist and decided not to skip they gym so I went and did legs and core everyday for 10 weeks till my wrist healed and my front squat went up 70 lbs and my deadlift max I'm repping easily (still have to check new max in a couple weeks. ) I'm kinda understanding it's all about just getting those reps in and they can have a cumulative effect.
