I think something that is overlooked here coincidentally coincides with your "buyer's mentality" theory. If the argument was that KZfaqrs like PokeRev cannot influence people who wouldnt already be buying Pokemon to buy Pokemon, then I would agree with you 100%. However, the people that the hype affects the most (collectors looking to add to collection or hold to invest) are actively looking for pricing, deals, and set information. I've been collecting for 1 month and it took me less than 2 days to find PokeRev, 3 days to find LeonHart, and 1 week to find you because I was specifically looking for collecting information.

I think you are vastly underrating the fact Rudy is not a typical content creator or salesman. He is strictly an investing guru. People see him and take his advice in hopes to be as rich as him. This man singlehandedly brought nearly 2 million dollars to the Sorcery KS. And made millions on his some of his FaB and MZ kits

Yeah he is more on guru of TCG. If you watched his early videos (around 10K sub count), he did a couple of basic finance guru advice with sealed investment.

I think more people watch Rudy's Metazoo videos because they've bought Metazoo, than buy Metazoo because they've watched Rudy's videos. I don't believe the conversion rate hypothesis applies in the same way to content creators. I totally agree that you need to think critically about these subjects and generate your own perspectives and ideas. But that also doesn't mean the narratives you commonly see are wrong, and they deserve to be considered and integrated into your perspective appropriately. For example, the idea that Metazoo was a "pump and dump" might be misguided in its extremity, but it also aligns with some of the more sensitive information that has come out of the discord lately. Not to imply you were contradicting this, just adding some extra color to the concept.

As an outsider looking in here’s my 2p. Any *new* venture with the word “Meta” in it, will not be anything Meta. Metazoo was a poor man’s Pokémon ripoff visually. Game wise, who cares because it looked bad man. You have to like what you’re looking at and not just making a game “to be the next big thing”. If you target people who only want to get into the next “big thing” then you’re not going to have a loyal fan base. I think for the creator it wasn’t a pump and dump - just hubris. I think the people who bought Metazoo were exactly the people who would fall for, and buy from pump and dumps and they got dumped on (inadvertently).

I mostly agree with your opinions. However the collectible/ singles market could be heavily swayed by a few poketubers when there are only a limited amount of those singles or booster boxes left on the market. Like the tag team cards for example. To your point though these people arent swaying the tcg in a massive way. But some things tend to stick ive noticed.

Heyy bro, love hearing your thoughts. I agree, its fairly insignificant the pull of "influencers" its important to digest all information regarding the tcg market. All these Echo chambers make the world seem smaller then it is. Best thing thing is stick with something you love & find the best infomation for it. Im aware of all of them, still always just collectingDollar cost averging is the way to go. Also cuts fresh but miss the long hair 👑

I watch my Pokemon influencer for hit rates, what comes in a new box set, but i watch more then one to get a balanced view, i try and purchase my sets on line to save money, and one offs I'll purchase from my comic book store to support them even though the cost is higher

Walking through the numbers and basic logic dispels so many of these weird conspiracy theories and myths. The funny thing is most of these are being pushed by KZfaqrs hoping to push outrage clicks, and they'll keep doing it while they can get views. Once those dry up, they'll move onto the next outrage of the day. Loved Mason's video btw. If you want to develop and grow a TCG, follow the advice of the people in the business who can help you do that!

I agree with most of what you’re saying. I think people can have multiple mind sets when browsing KZfaq, or those who are extremely dedicated to staying up to date on specific KZfaq influencers. Like Rudy, for example, his whole channel is staying up to date on the cardboard market. I feel like a huge majority of those subscribers are there for the investment concept and what to dip their hands in. Is it on the scale that can tip the tides to manipulate an entire TCG market..? Hard to say, very unlikely, but we would never know unless it was surveyed to a degree. Let’s just all agree that two truths (that are opposing) can in fact exist at the same given time. That’s just how I look at it until facts are laid out.

I think poketubers have some influence. But I think the mistake is people think today they have the same level of influence they did during the pandemic when everyone was home and bored and it was the trending thing. I think they have less influence now by a long shot than they did back then.

Gary on Pawnstars 100% had effect on the market. That is the only point in Pokemon alongsaide some of Logan's stuff that rose the market to some degree. PokeRev doesn't really have any effect in a macro sense. Pawnstars might... well it did haha

@@pokene_pokemon In late 2016 a PSA 10 1st ed Zard was worth 9k. By March 2017 it was worth 20k... but checking the Pawnstars date you are probably right as it aired later that year I don't see too much inflation right after the first airing of that show, although within another year the card had tripled in price. The show was made to pump the market either way and if you ask me succeeded in a small way long term with 14m views. I got into Pokemon TCG early 2020 that was the first thing I saw.

Yeah this is the only answer. I play Pokemon but am otherwise a filthy casual/normie and I didn't even hear about Metazoo until it collapsed. Watching a Rudy unboxing made it look unappealing to me, like the art looks Chinese knockoff-y. Like that blue, red, green crayon thing looks straight gross.

A lot of nuance to this discussion, a couple of ideas/possibilities that stick out to me. The conversion rate makes sense from a flat math stance but there are other variables at work. Thinking back to Rev opening lost origin for hours and not pulling Aerodactyl V. Market seemed to move on that card once that happened. I didn’t watch the video but I heard about it from multiple people so what’s the effect on the market from word of mouth ripple effects? Even if they aren’t actually pumping something they can still move markets. To go along with this point, for some things it takes fewer people with bigger bank accounts to move (pump?) a market so a lower conversion rate could still have an effect on a market. Now, do I think this works on a scale of “an entire TCG”? It’s much less likely. I do think though some influencers/KZfaqrs do have enough reach (directly and indirectly) to affect markets.

Every set comes with five starter decks.. so there’s 30 theme decks prebuilt you could buy… not including release event decks that are also prebuilt decks, I assume you’re unaware of the tournaments that take place at local game stores for metazoo?… or the towers tournament or casters cup they gave out 100 grand ? I love when people have no fucking clue what they’re talking about ❤… your logic is far from sound. Mike was the creative genius to give Cryptid the universe. It has never been done before it’s pretty original. Have you ever done anything original?

At first yes, there were plenty of lgs events, and tournaments. It’s when Mike got a taste of fame when he stopped working with LGS all together and stopped communicating well. Then he stopped releasing product on time leaving LGS owners with a 20-50K lull in capital. Then he stopped paying tournament winners and to this day those winners are still out their money. As far as creativity on my end, I’m not sure I’m creative but I built a company using nothing but a cell phone and tiktok and as of now, it’s worth more than metazoo… so I guess if Mike Is a creative genius then I’m a entrepreneurial super computer 🤷

I don't necessarily want to come off as rude. But, it seems like you don't truly understand TCG markets. Pokemon is a completely different thing that all the other TCGs, the company who runs Pokemon doesn't care about the card game all that much, they make the majority of their share of revenue from everything else Pokemon is involved with. As you yourself said, a huge chunk of their consumers are parents buying packs for their kids, or adults buying up things they wish they could have ehen they were kids. Channels like you've mentioned are super niche and likely have way different conversion rates than the typically percentage you've said. If you do run the basics numbers, yes, a small channel doesn't have that large of an impact on things, when you're comparing it to the second largest cards game ever to be made. But something like metazoo was tiny to begin with. Most people who gravitated to it, were speculative investers thinking they could probably get in on the ground floor. It's downfall was primarily that there really wasn't an actual large pool players to begin with, the only people who seemed to play it were top players of other tcgs like magic and yugioh players who were trying to make a quick buck. (But back to Rudy, his who channel isn't about investing, he just tells you what he does, and if he ever does talk about investing advice, he typically steers people away from collectibles unless they have all their other priorities in order first, breaking down exactly what you should have checked off before ever considering buying products; he is definitely getting the short end of the stick as the fallout of all of this) For sure its downfall came from people only ever talking about it as an investment, it was for a long time hard to find people actually playing the game, or finding gameplay at all. And when people talked about its biggest tournaments, they were significantly smaller, than even a regional/minor event for the top tcg tournaments.

@@pokene_pokemon I wasn't trying to disagree with the overall point, but I felt it could come off as in a way you would think otherwise. It was a business that was mismanaged and plenty of people have been very skeptical of it as a tcg for a long while; as someone once did a super deep dive and and crazy reseach into it from a pro tcg player and very large card shop employee's perspective; he was very in the know about games/tournaments. He explained this was likely the only outcome at some point, and this was like more than a year ago. With hindsight and acceptance people can see all the signs, but people didn't want to believe it because they kept thinking about it as an investment.

I’m not quite sure why everyone throws Rudy under the bus for what happened to metazoo. Honestly the whole fiasco with metazoo could’ve been avoided if they focused primary on the player side first but they mainly focused on the collectibility side of the Tcg which let’s be honest destroys a Tcg eventually if it doesn’t have a good player base and collector base. If everyone actually watches Rudy’s channel he doesn’t want you to invest into collectibles until you have your crap together like having a house instead of an apartment and traditional investments but of course there will be Timmy’s that think Rudy is some type of guru when in reality he’s no guru he just tells you what he does. If you want to be a Timmy and invest crap loads on collectibles without having your crap together then go ahead lol.

Running interference for people in your business who are notorious for directly or indirectly hyping up speculative TCG investments is not a good look. Your claim that these large content creators have little effect on the market is definitely suspect when we just saw a few years ago how stores were being cleaned out by people in order to flip. Thank goodness that party is over.

You’re right, a literal global pandemic wasn’t the reason the economy of the collectibles market and e-commerce boomed. It was Leonhart and pokerev opening shit for their 12 year old audience

Don’t forget about Logan Paul or the myriad of other influencers who all contributed. The pandemic definitely created a captive audience that these people used to their advantage. Rev and Leon both had mystery packs, so did a lot of other hype content creators. It doesn’t get more obvious than mystery packs.
