As triggered said every rezero arc follows the same formulaic pattern Subaru is over confidnt, then subaru dies alot due to said overconfidence and ego, subaru gets sad and whines, waifu saves him and then subaru is able to one try the arc and win. This same formula has been going on for 7 arcs now. Thus your point is moot because it has been recycled and overused to the point where any genuine "development" feels hollow and void.

In each arc he has to deal with different problems reggarding a) his attitude and b) his way to face problems: 1- In season 1, his problem was his arrogance: even though he had good intentions and he really wanted to save everyone, he constantly ignored what others really wanted replacing their own needs and wishes with what he though was good for them. He also thought that he could solve problems completely by his own (something that carries al the way through season 2) and that he didn't need to plan ahead of things and carefully construct ways to deal with problems. He also had an incredibly low self steem and didn't want to share his problems with everyone (which ended up with the lap scen on season 1). All of these are the problems that are solved in the first season, with the exception of the problem about trying to deal with everything on his own, which was only partially solved once he started receiving help from Rem. 2- In season 2, this last problem appears again, and in a worse way considering that Rem isn't among him anymore. Another problem that he has to face is this incredible burden that he puts upon his own shoulders because he knows that he is the only one who can go back in time and the one responsible for dealing with these things (this would end up being proven wrong thanks to otto's help and his trial about his parents). The last problem that he has to deal with is the fact the he thinks that the only way to solve things is by spamming his RBD ability, which triggered dismissed by just saying "NUH UH". This is a very serious problem, since we have already seen in the what if stories what would happen if he kept doing so (spoiler: nothing really good). All of these are the problems that he faces in season 2 (which weren't solved by no waifu unless you think otto is a girl lol), an there is only a minimal overlap with a problem that was dragged on from season 1. I would really like to let you know that making stories is not that easy at all: authors spend a lot of time and effort thinking about how to structure their plots and stories, and it is very disrespectful to make this kind of half ass destructive-criticism full of strawmans reviews because the author put a lot more effort than the amount of effort you put into misinterpreting the story. That is why, if you consider that you would want to make a review of the series, please, try to put atleast the same amount of effort the author did onto that in your own critique. Also, video coming soon debunking these two critiques about re:0. Edit: had some issues and wasn't able to do the full review. As a bonus, I will take a more general approach and not onbly try to debunk this review of the series but also other reviews in MAL and reddit.

Personally I think the series is meh, but I can see why people would love it or hate it.

The issue of the show is the fact that the main character is written to be a complete moron and a self absorbed, emotional dumbass. Since most of the time, he never actively tries to help himself when it comes down to actually using skills or knowledge for his resets, he never develops beyond his actual basic character, and literally does nothing, but chases tail that he could barely ever get in his league. And it doesn't help the fact that time he dies it's just some boring ass trap that literally builds tension for nothing since beyond that it doesn't matter afterwards.

In season 2 Subaru got the necessary development to get more used to dying and from arc 6 (will most probably be second half of season 3) he will be dying a lot more and will be getting a ton of character development in each arc. And season 4 is gonna be peak, when arc 7 the land of wolves gets animated everyone is gonna simp for shotabaru. ✊

Rezero is about character grow, and the character goal is very clear in ss2. And it a mysterious show you can't just know everything after the 1/3 of the story.

"Its so unclear what the ultimate goal is for the characters" If you mean the ultimate quest that the hero of a story has to completed. Subaru's goal is to help Emilia take the throne and also help the people he cares about in the faction (and maybe outside too) survives. If you are talking about where the series wants to go ultimately, there's a few goals that are pretty clear once you've watched the show with enough attention to actually understand something. First, there is the unsealing of the witch of Envy, because it is said that she was sealed by the Dragon, the Sage and the Hero, and the witch cult seems to try to perform an Ordeal. Also there is the Covenant with the Dragon and the royal family of Lugunica who seems in jeopardy because of the death of all the royal family and the Royal Selection seems like a solution to this problem by having the person winning the royal selection deal with this problem. Roswaal the backer of Emilia said he wanted to kill the Dragon so maybe they will have to defeat it. Also in tandem with the first point there is the fight between the kingdom of Lugunica and witch cult, and the eradication of it ultimately.

He actually does show why he loves her. One he was a loner girl helps him despite him doing nothing in return, he's a virgin never had a girlfriend is a shut in. You telling me you never had a crush in a girl just cause she offered you kindness before you ever dated? Also you clearly didn't see emilia backstory if you think she's bad. (Spoiler( You literally calling someone who's not fully devolped less interasting when the choice she makes is because she been frozen for years.

You can't say "oh this character is developed because that backstory adds alot to her depth" when literally everything she does up to that point does not matter if she does not know anything about her past experiences which in turn should affect her future ones. Also even if you introduce a character with amnesia there are plenty other shows who have actually done it right and given some depth to the character by other means. The author is just bad at writing characters and that's it. Even the movie which was exclusively for emilia only didn't do anything except just provide some more context as to why is puck doing what hes doing. She is without a shadow of a doubt the same 2d character up to the end of the show when they actually show her memories, but hey at least she is consistent throughout the show not like someone else changing character traits every episode.

He doesn't love Emilia to death and has never stated he has, so how did you get that? His obsession at the start comes from the fact that she was the first person to truly show him kindness since he was a kid. He had already seen the assassin's tricks, so chasing her could have endangered Subaru and Emilia if he was tricked again.

Re Zero fans are the main reason i have appathy for this series, i watched both seasons and they are ok, some good moments and some mediocre moments and one special narrative element and is a kind of a cool fantasy series. But the fanboys saying that it is a masterpiece and the best fantasy series compared to LOTR or something and that if your dont agree your didnt understand are the reason i dont feel like watching it anymore, so pretentious and hypebeasts only lower the hype i had for this series yikes.
