I've used Ospho (it has several other brand names, too like Rust Cure) for years; something that video didn't cover was that once the rust is converted, it makes an unbelievable bond for paint. I've even taken sandblasted metal and allowed it to get just a hint of surface rust so the Ospho would convert it and give my primer/paint an incredible bond, far better than bare steel. He called the converted rust an inert material: it is actually a primer. Great stuff!

@@bdr5150 Well I wouldn't worry too much about it, I Ospho'd a very rusty roof on a 63 Skylark (without using water) and the paint is holding up great years later. I like to use plenty of primer. One thing is do not get Ospho on glass or even paint really but it will haze up your windows...Sand er down, Ospho, maybe a little more sanding, then primer it up.

Good rant! I thought you were going to say something against Ospho, and I wanted to know what it was! I'm into my first project car after a 40 year break, and it's a different world. My car has (had) significant rust issues, and making sure what I do doesn't rust through five years after I paint it is high on my list. Glad you have a high opinion of Ospho, have been using it for a couple of years now. As for your rant, yeah, we are all in this together and the time I spend working on my project is precious. I work two jobs, have family and other responsibilities. Having good information and developing my skills is the primary reason I come to KZfaq. I don't care about personalities. I care about content.

The ONLY acid cleaners SPI recommends is Opsho, PPG and DuPont metal preps as long as their instructions are followed to a tee. Use any other system you want, just do us a favor and use no SPI over them. There can be NO shortcuts for good results. Ospho, is a great product for automotive if used right, we give scare warnings because we want people to call so we can make sure they know how to neutralize it, so no problems will arise. Only one way to use and here it is: Use as needed and apply as many times as needed to get the spot Clean let dry and leave for months if you want, don’t matter. To neutralize the Ospho MUST be wet, so if dry, re-wet with itself and let set one or two minutes and with a clean rag and water, wipe off like washing the car and then dry. Next, then da car with 80 grit, clean with 700-1 wax and grease remover, let set an hour and coat with an epoxy. Notes of interest (maybe) If you try and sand dry film off you will lose 40-60% adhesion (per adhesion tester as some will embed itself in metal and amount depends on how long the Ospho has been on panel as we do know acid films degrade with time but due to many factors we cannot pinpoint a time frame. Just wondering why you do not neutralize the acid before DA?
@brandtgibson2291
@brandtgibson2291 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment, i really appreciate all the comments on neutralizing, it seems like a staightforward process, but yet i have found it explained so many ways------ truly out of curiousity, not a sarcastic question, not calling into question the efficacy of your process, but; Could running a DA with 80 grit remove most of the beneficial adhesion effects of the ospho? Also is there a point where, the metal is clean enough, and just a smooth DA finish is considered sufficient prep, and you just ditch the ospho?

That's a super important question that was not covered in the video! Many primer manufacturers state that if you paint over without neutralizing, even if you re-sand by DA, you can have delamination problems. You shouldn't let this dry on the metal without neutralizing. I suggest people hit the SPI forum and read the very good explanation about this from their tech people.

Ospho has to be neutralized with some epoxy primer such as SPI epoxy primer.Won't adhere to Ospho treated metal until you rewet it with Ospho and wash it off with water. That is how you neutralize Ospho. On the other hand, Kirker epoxy primer works better if metal is treated with Ospho and not neutralized. I myself treated my VW with Ospho and going to use Kirker epoxy primer with it.
