I'm a brutal coach and I admit that some of my ex fighters would still be fighting for me if were a bit softer, but they are also the ones who'd never go on to the level which they are physically capable of. I make them break, some quit, some continue. Once they break, they get rebuilt til it's time to break them again.

Resilience is key. My coach does the same thing. Yelling loud, critical, pointing out little flaws but sensationalising. Fighting is far more about emotional capacity and stress management than I ever thought !

A good trainer knows how to play the mind of their students. You are spot on about the emotional capacity

Hahahaha the old school way was nuts but humans were actually tough back then. Break a fighter week of their fight this week and the go AWOL and never return hahahaha

Hi Pinky. Nice vid. I'm 52 and too old to really become a fighter. But I'm after advice about what I should do. I'm just looking to improve my life and being pushed too hard too soon would likely just cause injury and make me give up. My only martial arts experience is about 18 months of karate and about 10 kickboxing classes over 30 years ago. I'm keen to do something and BJJ is the most appealing but your honesty and attitude also makes your club appealing. I'm a healthy weight and don't have health issues but have almost zero fitness. I guess I'm looking for something to replace hanging at the pub and I'm pretty much starting from scratch. What would your advice be?

Great honesty. It 52, it is still possible to fight. Obviously not to make a career but for your bucket list. Fitness comes while learning, so that's never really a big issue. If Muay Thai is what you want to do, being a fighter is a small part of it. There is alot of value in having regular bodies in the gym to help prepare the young ones. It's never too late to make Muay Thai your life. Just start, have no ego, keep an open mind and enjoy learning xx
