Rantasmo, this is probably your most interesting video. I never saw the potential gay elements in the characters in the film. What grabbed me as a young gay man in the seventies was the song. I used to sing it to myself all of the time, as it perfectly captured my desire to live in a world where I could belong. When I became an adult I was more than surprised that so many gays before me and after me had latched onto this film

This video is probably the funniest of yours that I've seen. The Bears joke, the "of course people do go both ways", I love it
@theodorwilliam69438 жыл бұрын
Ooooh so that's where the joke from Little Britain comes from...I should probably explain. Little Britain is a sketch comedy show made by Matt Lucas and David Williams. One of the recurring characters is a gay man called Daveed, who acts insanely stereotypically gay, while he does his best to convince gay people that they are not gay, because he mostly wants the attention of people discriminating against him and being "the only gay in the village" as he puts it. Nobody does discriminate against him, in fact it seems like most people around him are actually either gay or bi-sexual, which he completely denies. In one of the episodes a bartender he often speaks to, who is a lesbian, introduces him to another gay man, who Daveed argues is not gay by asking him stereotypical questions, one of which is who played Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz". The punchline being everybody in the bar saying, "Judy Garland" and him saying, "Really"?

Fun fact In Wicked (not the musical, the much more adult book it was based on) The Wicked Witch of the West has a bastard son named Liir He is roughly 14 when the Witch dies. In the books sequel, Son of a Witch, we find out that Liir is bisexual. Not only does he have a male lover, who he is very much in love w, but latter on, he has a wife. He's one of my favorite characters of all time I'm one of my favorite series of all time (the Wicked series is less Disney musical more Gorge R R Martin) and the handling of his sexuality is done phenomenally. Though it is somewhat ironic considering that, in the first book, he is LITERALLY a friend of Dorothy's.

Seeing as Dorothy is gay in a certain show you know what you gotta do...
@rampant1apart8 жыл бұрын
+simone robson Was wondering if anyone was gonna bring that up. Seemed really progressive for Once Upon a Time to show that, plus Dorothy and Ruby even shared the patented curse breaking "True Love's Kiss" too!
@redactedredacted66568 жыл бұрын
I do like that the kiss was giving the same weight and screen time as the heterosexual kisses but it's far from perfect.I think it was rushed and would of made more sense for it to be between Ruby and Mulan.

Love your channel. I'm a straight guy...yet am mistaken as gay constantly. I simply love gay culture and all my male friends are gay. I'm not in the closet at all. If I was gay...I'd embrace it entirely. I just like teh girls quite a bit. Maybe I'm quote-unquote _queer_ to a certain extent? Anyway...with that self-indulgent qualifying rant out of the way, just wanted to say I randomly stumbled across your channel today and have thoroughly enjoyed your perspective. Definitely got a new fan/subscriber in me. : )
@happyquesadilla7 жыл бұрын
hey buddy if you are cis and straight ya ain't queer. don't throw that word around like a joke. i don't give a shit how fascinated you are with gay culture, you are not a part of the lgbt community and you don't get to use it.
@tintinaus7 жыл бұрын
rowena, this guy is obviously an ally. There is no reason to dump on him like this.
@happyquesadilla7 жыл бұрын
tintinaus no, he isn't. if he thinks he's allowed to call himself queer bc he has gay friends, and he's somehow revolutionary for liking rupauls or some shit.... bye. don't let the door hit you on the way out.
@happyquesadilla7 жыл бұрын
and frankly, i wasn't even "taking a dump on him." I'm not calling him names or making threats. i just said "hey, what you're doing isn't cute so knock it off." am i being super nice and polite about correcting him? no, not really, but here's the thing: if someone gets called out for being homophobic/racist/whatever, and your reaction is to leap to THEIR defense bc the person from the oppressed group calling them out was a little bit mean about it.... yikes lol.
@tintinaus7 жыл бұрын
Okay, first - He didn't state he was queer, he questioned if he could be classified as queer, and I certainly didn't read his use of the word queer as an attempt at humour. For all I know he may in fact be somewhere on the spectrum, all be it, probably close to one end. Secondly, the reason I commented is that you brought profanity and aggression into the conversation. You don't seem to think so, but look at what you wrote. Unlike when I commented to you, you failed to use his name, instead minimising his value as an individual by labelling him "hey you". Then you said you didn't "give a shit" about his opinions. You may be right and he may be mis-using the queer label, but your(in my mind) aggressive shutdown of him wasn't warranted. Thirdly, believe it or not, you can be part of a minority and still be mistaken.

Okay so I originally put this as a reply but I'm gonna put in my two sense about the 1985 film Return to Oz, to me Return to Oz can be interpreted as a gay male going under conversion therapy, Dorothy is still a minor so still has to be in Kansas, and when she gets back home and won't shut up about oz (being gay) and is taken to therapy to fix her (electro shock therapy is still used by conversion therapy today) and oz is now a surreal waste land, and the nome king having the ruby slippers could suggest many anti gay pepole are in the closet, would anyone like to add to my theory? I have more ideas I'll comment later

I think there may be another aspect to Dorothy waking up at home. She is surrounded by a loving family, including her three companions from the yellow brick road. They are in fact the farm hands, but she now has an insight into who they are in way she never knew before.

Wicked could be an allegory for much. The green skin can represent many differences people have. "Defying Gravity" could be about coming out. I for example post lyrices of the song on Twitter with the Hactag ActuallyAutistic as part of Autisim AcceptanceMonth.

In the blue ray documentary they say that the reason why the lion gets a second song was because they cut his first one short with the other characters taking over. I think they did it this way so the origin songs didnt feel so repetitive. Rule of 3. On the third song they change it up and since they didnt want one character to have less attention they added his later song for him to sing alone.

I always hated the fact that she went back home in the end. That might be because my biggest fantasy as a child was going to a whole other world to escape to. Preferably Narnia or Oz. Which is why I've started reading the books, because she goes back. And stays! I always said, "Fuck going back. If I ever landed in Oz or Narnia, I'd NEVER go back."
